Two-hundred girls and families from 34 states, Canada and England will be in attendance as Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support hold their second biannual Convention on June 29thJuly 1st on Long Island. Founded in 2006 by then13 year-old Smithtown, resident Leah Stoltz, Curvy Girls has successfully engaged hundreds of young girls and families in mutual support and advocacy activities through the experience of scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral bending and twisting of the spine that, when progressed, causes body deformities and compromises internal organs. It affects seven million people in the U.S. with a diagnosis most commonly occurring in pre-adolescence. The disease shows progression ten times more frequently in girls than boys. Curvy Girls groups provide peer-to-peer and familyto-family support and
information. Now 21 and graduating from American University with a degree in business and marketing, Leah helped her group to go global after she was featured on the first TeenNick HALO Awards – Helping And Leading Others – in 2009. Hosted by entertainer Nick Cannon, the show engages celebrities to honor teens who give back to their community while overcoming hardship. Leah was honored by singer/ actor Justin Timberlake. With the help of this exposure, Curvy Girls has connected nearly three thousand affected girls through group meetings and social media, including 62 operating self-help groups - run by teens that also operate in Brazil, Spain, and Australia. Curvy Girls is appreciative to their major Sponsor EOS Imaging for making it possible for girls from around the world to be able to attend. Additional

Fixing The System By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you
guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.
It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

When it comes to both children and automobiles, driving home the message of safety is of utmost importance. Supervisor Kate Murray and the Hempstead Town Board are doing just that, announcing the start of the town’s 2014 Child Car Seat Safety Inspection Program, which will be visiting communities across the Town of Hempstead to help residents inspect the installation of their car seats, free of charge. “With warmer weather on the horizon, parents will be driving their young children to and from many exciting activities,” stated Murray. “Now is the perfect time for Town of Hempstead residents to ensure that their children are properly secured in safety seats, and we are proud to offer the lifesaving Child Car Seat Safety Program at no cost.” This program is led by the town’s certified child passenger safety technicians, who have been trained by Safe Kids Worldwide, a global organization that seeks to prevent accidents and injuries to young children. Residents can have their child safety seat inspected and, if necessary, technicians will make adjustments. The following is a listing of car seat safety inspection dates (all held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) by location. You must make an appointment

Fire Island Dance Festival Continued From 8 AIDS, continue to receive the lifesaving assistance they need.” Through their generous support, Fire Island Dance Festival attendees have helped ensure that the most vulnerable among us receive lifesaving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. The 20th anniversary celebration kicks off with the Friday night Leadership Event, an intimate evening reserved for Leadership Supporters. The excitement continues throughout the weekend with three Fire Island Dance Festival performances: the opening performance on Saturday, July 19th at 5 p.m. (open bar starting at 4 p.m.); sunset performance on Saturday,
July 19th at 7 p.m. (open bar following); and closing performance on Sunday, July 20th at 5 p.m. (open bar following). Each performance features acclaimed and emerging dancers and dance companies. Leadership Supporters enjoy an elevated festival experience including the Leadership Event with cocktails on Friday, highly coveted tickets to the sunset performance on Saturday or priority seating at either 5 p.m. performance and prominent recognition in the harbor and throughout the Pines. Beginning May 24th, tickets also will be available in person on weekends in the Fire Island Pines Harbor. Leadership tickets start at $325. Individual tickets for the 5 p.m. performances are $125. A Return To Summer On The Shore
With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed! As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy. It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach. My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer. Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by
Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy. Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful. As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed. Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do
not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole. As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years. Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious. Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife. This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

Selected For Display The artwork of Wantagh High School studentartist Nicole Hunter has been selected for display in the window of Marshs Department Store on Main Street in Huntington. To illustrate the close ties between art and fashion, the store chooses artwork from the Long Island’s Best Exhibit at the Heckscher
Museum, pairing it with a fashion piece. Nicole’s photograph, “Fleeting Moment,” was selected for the juried Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition at the Heckscher Museum, March 20th to April 27th. Hers was one of 80 submissions selected out of 350 submissions from 51
public and private schools in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Nicole’s photo will hang in the department store window throughout the month of May. This is the second consecutive year that a Wantagh student’s artwork has been selected for the Marshs display.

Hamptons Greek Fest The sights, sounds, aromas and flavors of Greece are coming again to Hamptonites and visitors to the East End. The Hamptons Greek Festival will take place again this year, July 10th13th, on the grounds of the newly built Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons. Continuing a 29 year tradition, the Festival will highlight authentic Greek dishes and pastries,
Hellenic youth dance performances, and live Greek Music nightly. Thousands have indulged in the rich flavors and hearty portions of the Festival’s menu. Passing down the culinary traditions of their parents and grandparents, the organizers of the 2014 Hamptons Greek Festival offer Greek style chicken, pastitsio, spanakopita, souvlaki, gyro and much

Complementing the main fare are Greek pastries that were praised by Newsday who wrote that its “favorite source in Astoria doesn’t hold a candle, frankly, to the kourabiedes (butter cookies) made by the Church ladies. Once the application is completed on-line there will be a seven day period to submit payment to TOH Lacrosse Academy, 200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead, New York 11550. Nearly 1,500 youngsters graduated with honors from last summer’s Town of Hempstead Lacrosse Academy and a championship caliber staff of renowned coaches and outstanding players are ready to impart expert instruction on lacrosse fundamentals and strategies. Again this summer, the Lacrosse Academy will host two-hour morning instruction for 5 and 6 year-olds in partnership with the traditional threehour clinics for youngsters 7 to 15 years of age. The
clinics for 5 and 6 yearolds run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The sessions for ages 7 to 15 are set from 9 a.m. to noon. Evening sessions from 6 to 9 p.m. will be open to youngsters from 6 to 15 years of age. Weekly clinics, running from Monday to Thursday, will begin on Monday, June 23. If openings remain there will be walk-up registrations before the first clinic of each week. Check with the lacrosse office (516.783.3208) or the town web site (toh. li) to determine clinic availability. Discounts are available for any family that registers more than one child for the same week. Two-hour clinics for ages 5 & 6 are priced at $60 per child, the three-hour clinics and the position clinics are priced at $70 per youngster.
