The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

Breaking Down Bacteria

Top Mathematician Saajid Chowdhury, an eighth-grade student at Salk Middle School in Levittown, placed third in Nassau County in the Mathletes Competition, having scored 25 points for his team. Saajid is a talented mathematician, having

instructed and guided through the process of extracting DNA from harmless bacteria. During the in-house field trip, the students learned how the cell membrane protects cells and gives each one structure. To extract the DNA from the bacteria, the

young scientists used soap, heat and ethanol. In addition to the bacteria cell study, sixthgraders have also focused on animal and plant DNA during their exploration of genetics.

Math Scholar Program this coming fall through the summer of 2016, based on his successful completion of a yearlong course at the Institute of Creative Problem Solving at SUNY Old Westbury, where he learned advanced mathematical concepts.

Bellmore-Merrick CHSD students Lauren Camacho and Megan Grath earned first place, and schoolmate Danielle Littman won third place, at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse. All three students attend Nassau BOCES Barry Tech. Top achievers at the state conference move on to the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY this June. Lauren and Megan, both digital design students, won top honors in the promotional bulletin board category, and Danielle, a medical assisting student, earned third place in the American spirit category. Led by Katie McAuley, an instructor from the DNA Learning Center in Cold Spring Harbor, the Bellmore students were

placed in the top 5 percent of the nation as a participant in the prestigious American Mathematics Competition hosted by the Mathematical Association of America earlier this year. He has also been accepted to attend Brookhaven National Laboratory’s

as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. Classes at Barry Tech carry no ordinary criteria for completion. In addition to meeting state academic standards, Barry Tech students must meet industry certification requirements in their chosen careers. As a result, Barry Tech students earn certificates in their specific fields of study, as well as technical endorsements on their diplomas. Considerable effort goes into qualifying for the annual SkillsUSA competition. All Barry Tech students have a double workload, completing not only their Barry Tech assignments, but also satisfying full courses of study at their home schools. Add to that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how tirelessly these students

work. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. The program helps establish industry standards for jobskill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants. The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes SkillsUSA as a “successful model of an employer-driven youth development program.”

On Sunday, May 17th, Baldwin Junior Troop #2144 set out on a foggy morning to Jones Beach to make the world a cleaner place by collaborating with the environmental group Operation SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering and Save Harbors) A week earlier, Peter Suchmann, SPLASH volunteer and retired earth science teacher, visited their troop meeting and presented a touching documentary about a dolphin who almost died from eating a plastic bag. The girls learned how

small particles of waste and plastic bags can be mistaken for food and harm marine animals and wildlife. During the clean-up, scouts and their families collected five bags of trash in a mere 45 minutes. The first item spotted by Maeri, age ten, was a deflated “Happy Birthday” mylar balloon. Other garbage consisted of snack wrappers, Styrofoam bits, plastic bags, bottles and caps. Scouts witnessed firsthand that the majority of shoreline litter is the

result of storm drains emptying into the bays. The tide then brings the trash to the shore and marsh. One scout shared “Now I know where all the litter comes from...it’s sad to see all the garbage that can hurt the animals”. Another scout added “don’t litter!” Several passersby thanked the scouts for their efforts but the true highlight of their day was rescuing a baby turtle that was stuck in a tide pool and returning it to the sea.

Pumpkin Contest calculated how many seeds would fit in each square based on growth projection, and determined how deep in the ground each seed needed to be planted. They also counted how many bricks are needed to create the perimeter of each planting area. Principal Anthony Ciuffo

Flag Etiquette In celebration of Memorial Day and upcoming Flag Day on June 14th, American Legion Commissioner Andrew Booth and members of Post 1711 instructed Northside Elementary School students on American flag etiquette. The Levittown students learned about historical

facts about the flag, what the stars and stripes stand for and the proper way to hang and fold a flag. In addition to information on flag etiquette, Booth talked about the importance of Memorial Day and the Pledge of Allegiance. He encouraged the students to display respect as dignitaries and holders

of the flag march passed them in the parade. “Show respect for the flag by placing your hand over your heart,” he said. Students who were able to answer questions about flag history demonstrated how to properly fold the American flag with the assistance of American legion members.

A recent survey suggests that 70 percent of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim. In honor of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, June 1st7th, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association encourages everyone to learn Hands-Only CPR by watching a short video by visiting www.heart.org/ HandsOnlyCPR. Cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Each year, over 326,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the

U.S. and only 10 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims survive. According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute.

To easily keep this rate, push the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” By empowering bystanders to perform Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association works to strengthen the chain of survival – a five-step process that can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
