Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Funds support affordable supportive housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk County. “Everyone needs safe, stable housing,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options’ CEO. “Some conditions make it difficult for people to maintain a stable home without help. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly
makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Building on the incredible popularity and success of similar programs last summer and this past winter, Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board are announcing the much-anticipated sequel: “The Return of Free Drive-In Movies!” Beginning on June 3rd, Town Park Point Lookout will screen a dozen movies on a giant LED screen, and residents can watch from the comfort of their own vehicles. Supervisor Clavin made the announcement in partnership with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll. The town’s media sponsor is KJOY 98.3. “When many local municipalities were postponing or cancelling programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Hempstead
was creating innovative options for our residents to enjoy recreational or entertainment options,” Supervisor Clavin said. “The Drive-In Movies series was one of the town’s most popular programs in 2020 and early 2021 and we are happy to bring back it back for another run for the enjoyment of the residents of America’s largest township.” The fun movie marathon will commence at Town Park Point Lookout (1300 Lido Boulevard Point Lookout) on Thursday, June 3rd, opening strong with Maleficent: The Mistress of Evil and will finish with the classic, Selena, on Sunday, June 20th. church’s social outreach/ food pantry. She has also served as a catechist, lector and teacher assistant at the church and was responsible for creating and distributing flyers for the 2018 Vacation Bible School to educate parents and campers on how to eat healthy when attending parties. Neri will officially be honored by District Attorney Signas, along with the other 2021 SHIELD award recipients, during a virtual awards presentation on June 24. The Levittown Public Schools congratulates her on this outstanding recognition.

She’s a pleasure to be around and leads by example in her work ethic.” Tesser is slated to travel to Israel mid-June to obtain her dual citizenship, also known as Aliyah, followed by training with the team. She will also participate in the Triple Crown International Challenge in Denver, Colorado at the end of June. Tesser will attend Bryant University in the fall on a softball scholarship.

Erica Neri, a junior from General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public Schools, was recently recognized with the Nassau County SHIELD Award from District Attorney Madeline Singas. The SHIELD Award, which stands for service, honesty, integrity, excellence, leadership and duty, honors high school juniors who demonstrate outstanding character, commitment to self-growth and the spirit and initiative to bring about a positive change in their community. Morgan Tesser, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, will play for the Israeli Women’s U18 National Softball Team this summer at the European Championship in Prague. Tesser is one of eight American women selected to represent Israel and has also been playing for the Cougars softball squad MORGAN TESSER since eighth grade. Mepham LEO Club Cleans Local Shores The Mepham LEO Club volunteered alongside the organization Operation SPLASH on May 15 to clean up 150 pounds of trash along Jones Beach Field 10’s shores.

Schools were recognized by Town of Hempstead officials outside of the school on April 27 for their athletic achievements. The students were surrounded by proud principal John Coscia, assistant principals Jaclyn Guidice and Sam McElroy, physical education department chairman Sean Smith and soccer and bowling coach Madeline Pagano. Two of the student bowlers, Kayla DeJesus and Kaitlyn O’Toole, graduated last year but returned for the special day. Other team members included Erica DeJesus and Brillian Soedarmasto and Katherine Oswald, a 2020 graduate who is
away at college. Clavin and Dunne unveiled a large congratulations sign from the Town of Hempstead for the team, and each bowler, along with coach Pagano, received a certificate of recognition. The Levittown Public Schools congratulates all of these student-athletes on their achievements.
