he MacArthur High School string orchestra and concert choir attended the annual Music in the Parks competition at Six Flags New England held in Agawam, Massachusetts from May 13th through May 14th. Under the baton of Lisa Levenberg and Iris Winter, respectively, the concert choir placed fourth with an Excellent Rating, and the string orchestra placed first with an Excellent Rating, as well as the Best Overall Orchestra Award.

with Buddy the Betta

The Saga of Squeegee Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Lookout. Set along the beautiful shoreline at Town Park Point Lookout, the Triathlon begins with a hearty three-quarter mile ocean swim. After emerging from the surf, competitors peddle off on a ten-mile bike through the streets of Point Lookout and Lido Beach. The final leg of the Triathlon is a five-mile run to the finish line at Town Park. “The Triathlon is a premier event on the town’s athletic calendar, attracting competitors from across Long Island and throughout the Metropolitan area,” commented Supervisor Anthony J. When the Town of Hempstead Triathlon raced onto the scene over 30 years ago, it was a one-ofa-kind event, a competitive trendsetter that helped inspire the current popularity of Long Island Triathlons. A compelling test of skill and endurance, the town Triathlon is contested along the beautiful ocean beachfront and through quaint seaside communities. Swimmers Sign On The Wantagh High School athletic department is pleased to announce that two of the district’s top swimmers have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their sport on the college level this fall. Jeremy Eletto, who swims the breast stroke, will attend Monmouth University. Jeremy is the high school’s team

record holder for the 200yard medley relay and has received All-County, All-Conference and AllDivision designations for his accomplishments for individual and relay competitions. He is also Nassau County’s second fastest swimmer in the breast stroke relay event. Chase Kravetz will attend Bucknell University.

He is the Nassau County Champion for the 50-yard freestyle and a two-time state qualifier in the 50yard, 100-yard and 200yard freestyle, as well as the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay. In addition, Chase is a junior national qualifier with the Long Island Express swim team.

students then worked collaboratively to measure the distance that each shoebox glider travelled, much like National Transportation Safety Board agents, and assessed the repairs needed for a second attempt at flight. The NASA Shoebox Glider Challenge was the culminating activity for a lesson about the four forces of flight including lift, drag, weight/gravity and thrust. The students

first brainstormed ideas, researched designs, analyzed wingspan, reviewed the principles of aerodynamics and studied design and width to ultimately promote the lift of their gliders. Based on their glider’s ability to fly, they then went back to the drawing board to improve their aeronautic vehicles and to update their oral presentations outlining the design process.

The Merrick Board of Education recognized students for their creativity and artistic accomplishments during its May 10th communication meeting. Three students from each school received a certificate of honor from their art teachers for their participation in the 12th annual Nassau All-County Art Exhibition. More than 1,200 students in grades K-12 were recognized for their exceptional work in 2-D visual arts media. In addition, students from Birch and Chatterton schools were acknowledged for their advancement

to the state level of the National PTA Reflections program. The respective schools’ principals and assistant principals presented each artist with a certificate of recognition. The Reflections program encourages all students to explore and be involved in the arts by reflecting on a common theme, which this year was “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Entrants are asked to create an original work of art in one of six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.

All students recognized during the meeting were also honored as Merrick Stars for the month of May, earning them a red “Merrick Star” T-shirt. Merrick Stars is an award program that recognizes staff and students who go above and beyond to help the school community. The district congratulates all of the students honored at the meeting. Carousel of Achievement Students at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District welcomed parents, families and community members to participate in the “Carousel of Achievement” on May 17th. Each grade prepared a special activity reflecting

their work over the course of the year. Students in grades K-2 welcomed guests to watch dance performances, compete in quiz games such as “Jeopardy!” and create mathematical graphs using candy. Parkway students in grades 3-5 had guests listen to debates about the

During its annual awards presentation on May 8, the Jewish War Veterans East Meadow-Levittown Post 709 recognized MacArthur High School senior Danielle Ducey and junior Jenna Stillman with two prestigious awards. Danielle received the Bernard and Lillian Hein Brotherhood Award for excellence in music. Danielle is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and a member of the school’s chorus and

a cappella group. She is also president of the school’s chapter of the Theater Honor Society and a member of the National Honor Society. This winter, Danielle played the role of Elle in the school’s hit production of “Legally Blonde.” This coming fall, she will attend Fordham University, where she plans on pursuing a career in communications. Jenna received the Bernard and Lillian Hein Brotherhood Award for

leadership and academics. Jenna is the Class of 2017 recording secretary, a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and a member of both the soccer team and winter and spring track teams. Several hundred works featuring Levittown’s MacArthur High School’s most dedicated and talented artists were on display during the school’s annual Art Show on May 18th, which not only took a closer look at the works of the best and the brightest artists, but also encouraged peers to explore their creative side. Curriculum Associate for Art Frank Creter noted the show is a culmination of a year’s worth of work and collaboration between talented students and

their teachers. It is also the first year the school is showcasing the art of advanced middle school studio arts students. “Beyond applying a medium to a surface, or simply satisfying an art assignment, students inevitably learned that art communicates, evokes emotions and can serve as an outlet for otherwise ineffable ideas,” Mr. Creter said. Many of the photographs, sculptures, drawings and paintings were selected for exhibitions

and scholarships across the region, including the All-County exhibit, Long Island’s Best, PTSA Reflections, Advanced Visions 11: High School Artists of Excellence and New York State Sen. Kemp Hannon’s Best in Town exhibits. Principal Joseph Sheehan said he is extremely proud of the students’ artwork. “It is truly remarkable what the students can do with a piece of clay, camera, pen and paper to create such masterpieces,” he said.

Levittown Lesson Northside Elementary School fifth-grade students in Levittown learned what it entails to pass a bill into law during a visit with New York State Assemblyman Tom McKevitt.

Mr. McKevitt explained that a bill is an idea that someone wants to make into a law and that there are approximately 11,000 pending in Albany today. He also described the

process by which a bill is passed into law, including sponsorship, debate and voting. “When I vote for a bill, I vote for you,” Mr. McKevitt told the students.

Author Appearance Wantagh Middle School students received a firsthand account of the writing process during a visit with fantasy author Nicoline Evans. “Writing at first was daunting and scary, but the best thing you can do as a writer is not give up,” she told the aspiring middle school writers. how she lives a little bit in each of the characters she develops in her stories. To the students’ delight, Ms. Evans also read her children’s book titled “Blue Spots.” “My writing stemmed from a love of reading,” Ms. Evans said, “and I am happy my books have found a home.”

Autism Support autism awareness T-shirts, designed by student Thomas O’Mara, for the school’s Day of Awareness. The Key Club also donated $500 through ticket sales for a skate-a-thon this past April. NSASA President Suzanne Reck said the money is earmarked for Long Island events that afford families the chance to participate in activities

that would otherwise be difficult without the support of the Autism Society of America. “MacArthur High School has raised more money than any other school on Long Island,” she noted. “This supportive school community has helped a lot of people. The simple things you can do, these students and families cannot do.”
