Winning Essayists The Jerusalem Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the First Place winners of the 2016-2017 American History and Christopher Columbus Essay Contests at a recent luncheon. Their parents, teachers, members of the Wantagh School District and DAR members attended. In the American History Essay Contest Jenna Rackley won First Place in 7th grade in Wantagh and First Place in New York State. Melanie Volz won First Place in 8th grade and Third Place in New York State. Their topic was “Celebrating a Century: America’s National Parks.” “Technology’s Impact of the Voyage of Christopher Columbus” was the high school topic. Eleventh grader Keriann Steingruebner won First Place in Wantagh, First Place in New York State, and First Place in the Northeast Region.

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in
the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Board of Education Meeting
FOR MOM - On May 12th, in observance of Mother’s Day, Jodi Scavelli’s secondgrade students at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District decorated candle jars as gifts for their mothers on the special day. The young students glued colorful tissue paper to the outside of the candle jars, creating beautiful designs, and inscribed personalized cards with the many reasons why they love and are grateful for their mothers. A Field of Honor Levittown students from Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools, as well as Gardiners Avenue Elementary School fourthgraders, collaborated in the planting of American flags to prepare the district’s second annual Field of Honor. The Field of Honor ceremony, which recognized veterans for their service and sacrifice in defense of the country, took place at Gardiners
Avenue Elementary School on May 20th. For the past several months, members of the community purchased flags on the district’s website from the Colonial Flag Company based in Utah. The proceeds from the flag purchases were then donated to the Hope for the Warriors organization. The students worked for several hours securing
the flags to poles and then driving the flags into the ground. Social studies director and event organizer Steve Costello said the students worked hard to provide this service to the community. “It was wonderful to see students who were willing to take the time out of their day for such an important event,” Mr. Costello said.
Honors and recognitions abounded at the May 16th Merrick Board of Education meeting, where Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma, central administrators and board members acknowledged the artistic creativity and philanthropic accomplishments of the district’s students. Three students from each school received a certificate of recognition from their art teachers for their participation in the 13th annual Nassau AllCounty Art Exhibition at Farmingdale State College on March 12th. More than 1,200 K-12 students were honored for demonstrating excellence in a wide variety of 2-D visual art forms, including drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design and
photography. Continuing the artistic achievements, students from Birch and Levy Lakeside schools were acknowledged for their advancement to the state level of the National PTA Reflections program. The respective schools’ principals and art teachers presented each artist with a Merrick Stars T-shirt. The Reflections program encourages all students to explore and be involved in the arts by reflecting on a common theme. Entrants are asked to enter an original submission in one of six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Concluding the celebratory evening, Chatterton School fourthgrader Carter Tenenbaum was acknowledged as the May Merrick Star for organizing the school’s Homes for Our Troops assembly. Inspired by this nonprofit organization, Carter proposed to the student council that Chatterton host a schoolwide fundraiser to contribute to the construction of a home for U.S. Navy Veteran Tim Birckhead. The combined efforts of Carter and the entire school raised $1,260 for Birckhead to live in a mortgage-free, specially adapted home. The district commends the artistic talents and selfless spirit of these wonderful students.

Stuff the Bus Staff members, faculty and the entire student body of Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District joined together on May 16th to fill a fullsized school bus with basic household necessities for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. The fundraiser, known as Stuff-the-Bus, was spearheaded by the school’s Social Emotional Learning Committee, which decided at the beginning of the school year to focus the school’s collective efforts on benefiting one charity. Woodland’s service clubs and organizations
responded by donating within a specific category of need, such as cleaning supplies, disposable products or pantry items. The clubs held individual fundraisers to collect the necessities or to raise funds to purchase the products themselves. Parents, faculty and community members also contributed by dropping off donations in the school lobby’s collection bin throughout the year. On a bright and sunny Tuesday morning, the middle school’s students, faculty and administrators gathered in front of the
building to load the bus, working in assembly line fashion to fill the seats and aisle with paper goods, cleaning supplies, bedding and nonperishable food items, among other sundry products. Once it had been filled, 30 students from the service clubs followed the packed-out bus to the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park, where they unloaded the massive donation. The district extends a special thank you to all donors and to the Guardian Bus Company for graciously providing their services.

Let’s Get Healthy to teach students how to make healthy lifestyle choices. Throughout the day, students rotated through various fitness stations led by volunteers from the community. The youngsters learned ways to exercise at home through activities like tai chi, yoga, dance, karate, crossfit training and ballet. Medical professionals shared health tips

Kristen Stritzl, an English teacher at Division Avenue High School in Levittown, attended the launch meeting of the National Writing Project’s College Ready Writers Program for HighNeeds Schools, held in Washington, D.C. She was also a co-facilitator of an
advanced institute as part of a 2017-2018 CRWP SEED High-Need Schools grant. Stritzl has been involved with the Long Island Writing Project’s College Ready Writers Program and has spent 30 hours this year collaborating with Long Island teachers
to discover and implement new ways of teaching argumentative writing in the classroom. Heidi Atlas, co-director of the Long Island Writing Project, described Stritzl as a “gifted, insightful, and intelligent educator.”

Memorial Walk The intense afternoon heat only fueled the memory of Division Avenue High School career development student Christina Constant as members of the Peer Pals program hosted a memorial walk to celebrate the memory of this special student, who passed away in 2014.
Adviser Maryann Crawford explained that the money raised during the walk will be placed toward senior scholarships for those students who worked as Peer Pals for the Levittown School District’s career development students. Special education teacher Scott Martino
