WOOD BAT TOURNAMENT - Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito attended the LSW AA 2nd annual Police Officer Anthony Dwyer Wood Bat Tournament held

at Alken Field in Seaford. Dwyer was a NYPD officer from Elmont who was killed in the line of duty in 1989 by a burglar. Money raised at the event goes to the Police Officer Anthony Dwyer Memorial Foundation which provides scholarships. A New Dimension F i f t h - g r a d e r s throughout the North Bellmore School District received an introduction to 3D printing, which is part of the technology department’s initiative to expose students to state-ofthe-art tools and resources. Technology integration specialist Michael Bevilacqua and technology teaching assistant Kerry MacTiernan recently visited Danielle Leone’s class at Newbridge Road

Elementary School to teach students about 3D printing. The youngsters were tasked with designing objects that could serve as earbud holders. Part of the challenge for each student was that their object had to include holes or notches to hold a wire. Using iPads, the young engineers created twodimensional designs in Pixie, then imported their drawings into Morphi, which converted them to

three-dimensional images. The objects could be no more than two inches. After completing their designs and saving them with unique filenames, the earbud holders were printed at the district technology office, which has two 3D printers. Linda Hill has been the owner of this pre-school learning center for the past two and a half years. She is a well-trusted leader who truly cares about the children and families she serves. Sharing is Caring I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

Fourth-graders at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School explored their creativity during their figure drawing unit in their art class on May 15th. Facilitated by art teacher Kristen Taylor, the students were challenged to use a wooden art mannequin figure as a model to help them create movement in their figure drawings. The class was encouraged to create a figure drawing that showcased their personalities and passions. Students illustrated figure drawings of themselves doing various activities and placed themselves in different careers. After they completed their drawings, each student added color with colored pencils to form a background and bring their figure to life.

Soldier Creation As a culminating activity to their study of ancient China, sixth-grade students in Carolyn Acevedo’s class at Shore Road School in Bellmore created a life-size Tibetan soldier. During the casting process, select students were wrapped in plastic bags and tape. Plaster strips were then applied to create a cast for the soldier’s body and head and then painted in designs indicative of the period. “The Tibetan soldier was a perfect way to bring history to life,” Acevedo said. Prior to making the

Tibetan soldier, the students participated in a videoconference with the Cleveland Museum of Art called “Tomb Culture of Ancient China.” They created Chinese lanterns to coincide with Lantern Day, a festival during the Chinese New Year. The students studied the five basic features of ancient China’s civilization, which included government and dynasties; art, architecture and public works; job specialization and social classes; religion and writing. They also focused their studies on the Qin Dynasty and how the

emperor had terracotta soldiers in his tomb to protect him in the afterlife. Acevedo explained that there was a research and writing component to the study. The students had to research and give presentations with an accompanying activity about one of the five features of China’s civilization. Additionally, they performed researchbased inquiries through a social studies toolkit provided through Engage New York, the state’s new social studies framework for grades K-12.

Honor Society Inductions The Wantagh Middle School Honor Society inducted 118 new members who have displayed excellence in the areas of character, leadership, community service and scholarship. During the ceremony held in the high school auditorium on May 16th, each of the inductees was also recognized as a recipient of the President’s Award for outstanding academic excellence. Principal Dawn Matrochano congratulated the students on the choices and decisions they have

made during their school tenure. “What you did to get to this point is the real honor,” she said. “Each characteristic is the sum of many decisions. Continue to be the best ‘you’ you can be.” In addition to jazz band musical interludes, under the baton of Nathan Brinkman, Julianna Rose and Aidan Schroh addressed their peers about the last three years at the middle school, as well as what to expect moving on to high school. Julianna said the students will

“continue to write their own stories,” while Aidan noted that his peers have the ability to shape their own futures. Wantagh High School National Honor Society CoPresidents Michael Hennig and Kyleigh Watson defined what the pillars of character, leadership, community service and scholarship mean to them. East Meadow High School senior Kristen Kavanagh is on her way to pursuing a career in education. This talented student recently received two scholarships to fund her studies this fall at SUNY Plattsburgh as a childhood education major. Kristen is the recipient of the New York State PTA Scholarship. This

prestigious award totaling $3,000 is presented to just five winners from among applicants from each of Nassau County’s high schools. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist outstanding students in their preparation for the teaching profession. Additionally, Kristen is the recipient of a Nassau Counselors’ Association

Joseph Bruzzese High School Scholarship. The award recognizes seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to helping others in the school community and who have shown concern for others through leadership. The East Meadow School District congratulates Kristen on this outstanding academic accomplishment.

Language through Art Daniel Jacob, a seventhgrade student from Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District, won second place in the Long Island Language Teachers’ annual poster contest. Daniel competed against more than 90 students from

19 schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The annual contest provides a creative outlet for students to express an appreciation of worldwide languages and cultures through art. This year’s theme was “Languages: Windows to the World.”

The contest coincided with National Foreign Language Week, held March 5th11th. The district congratulates Daniel on this outstanding accomplishment.

Students Medal at States which provides educational programs, events and competitions to support career and technical education. Ashley was a first-place winner in the arrest tactics demonstration. She was also recently named GC Tech Student of the Month for her skills in police science. Also Student of the

Month in police science, Ryan placed third in the Employment Application Process category on the state level, and placed first in this category during the regional competition held in March. The district congratulates both students on these outstanding academic accomplishments.

Division Avenue High School junior Sabrina Manos was recently presented with the Rensselaer Medal Award for academic excellence in math and science. The award, provided by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, grants Manos with a $25,000 per year college scholarship, guaranteed for four years

if she chooses to enroll at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. It can also be extended into a fifth year for graduate school. After graduation, Manos plans to major in math, setting her sights on a PhD. Her passion for math is already evident in her involvement at the high school where she is the treasurer of mathletes

and a Math Honor Society member. In addition, Manos participates in Music Honor Society, chamber orchestra, and is president of Division’s robotics club. “It feels so great that all of my work has paid off and that I can go to the school of my dreams,” she said.

Healthy Living Studies show that children with healthier lifestyles are better learners, and that is why John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District held Wellness Week from May 14th-18th. Wellness Week was organized by the school’s Shared Decision Making Team. The centerpiece was the inaugural Wellness Night on May 16. Students and their families were invited to participate in activities that focused on nutrition, fitness, personal safety and mindfulness. They learned how to relax through yoga and incorporate movement into their daily routines through dance. In the nutrition room, jars filled with Crisco represented the amount

of fat in different foods including potato chips, ice cream and salad dressing. The Rethink Your Drink station showed how much sugar is in popular children’s drinks such as juice, iced tea and soda. Nearby, healthy snacks and water were available. Students were able to learn water safety from a professional swimming instructor and explore different objects in a sensory room. At the gratefulness station, youngster wrote what they are grateful for on rocks that will become part of a garden. Throughout the week, students were encouraged to wear a different color each day and bring in a fruit or vegetable of that color. Other activities included Walk to School Day, the

sharing of healthy recipes for a school cookbooks and the creation of displays featuring students’ favorite healthy foods, drinks and activities. “This was a positive way to develop the children, parent and faculty’s awareness of living a healthy lifestyle using physical, emotional and nutritional skills,” said Principal Faith Skelos. “We are determined to raise well-rounded human beings who will ultimately be able to contribute to society in a positive manner. I am sincerely grateful to the parents, teachers and outside businesses who presented at our Wellness Night, for bringing their expertise and passion.”

ROTC Scholarship Senior Paul Englander from Division Avenue High School was recently presented with a four-year Army ROTC Scholarship from the Department of the Army for his academic studies, extracurricular and athletic activities and his desire to serve as an officer in the United States Army.

Englander is a valued member of Division’s athletic department where he played on the football, lacrosse, baseball and wrestling teams. He is also a member of the Best Buddies club. Englander plans to attend Purdue University in the fall where he will major in aerospace engineering.

“It’s great to take that huge burden off my parents with all the tuition costs and housing costs that it’s going to help out with,” he said. “It’s also huge for my future. It’s going to build a lot on my major and what my future is going to look like – where I’m going to go professionally from here.”

A Paw toward Protection

Lee Road Elementary School students and staff gathered in the school’s gymnasium on May 16th to explore the careers of canine officers Washa Bachturidze, Anthony Moreno and Thomas Salvati. The officers serve in the U.S. Canine Border Patrol unit out of John F. Kennedy airport with trained dogs that help detect dangerous travelers, contraband and agricultural irregularities. Bernie is a beagle mix breed that helps find agricultural irregularities that individuals try to bring into the country. The students watched as Bernie used his senses to find packaged food hidden in one of the boxes. Officer Bachturidze then spoke about how Bernie gets rewarded with treats. Officer Salvati taught students about the schooling involved for officers interested in joining the Canine Border Patrol for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He also discussed the training process for both the dogs and their officer. Using officer Moreno’s dog Alex,

a German shepherd mix, the students watched as the two ran up and down the line of bags while Alex used his senses to search for placebo narcotics. Once he successfully found the correct bag, officer Salvati rewarded him with a toy and the students cheered. Throughout the assembly, the officers encouraged the students to ask questions and spoke about the different dog breeds that work within the U.S. Homeland Security Department. The students also learned why certain dog breeds are beneficial for their roles in safety.

DNA Lab Anderson was Franziska Schanzkowska, a Polish factory worker with mental illness. “The goal here today is to use DNA for analysis to understand how to identify an individual in any criminal or civil investigation,” explained Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center teacher Pauline McGlone. The students utilized the process of DNA sequencing patterns, the family tree, and the study of mitochondrial DNA to determine the truth behind Anna Anderson’s claim. Using computer programming and the process of elimination, the students determined who was missing at the tsar’s burial ground through the study of key bone characteristics, including whether wisdom teeth were missing, if the rings on vertebrae were present and if the pelvis was that of a male or female.

Shore Road sixthgraders in the Bellmore School District joined thousands of forensic scientists in their quest to determine whether Anna Anderson’s claim that she was Anastasia Romanov, the daughter of the last Russian Tsar, was valid. Through a workshop with Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center, the students studied various physical and DNA analysis to determine the truth of her statement made in 1922. Anna Anderson was best known as one of several imposters who said to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia and the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II.
