She also showed photographs and maps of historic sites from across Long Island which once housed slaves who had escaped to freedom. The fourth graders excitedly made connections with a handful of the locations that were presented. Health & Safety In addition to academics, health and safety are paramount to a student’s education. During the week of May 6-10, Shore Road students in the Bellmore School District explored various options for remaining healthy and safe through attendance during several assemblies and guest speaker visits. The assemblies were also in line with the district’s leadership principle of continuous improvement, “mind, body, heart.” The week commenced with a visit from eighth

grade positive student leaders from Grand Avenue Middle School who spoke to the sixth grade students at Shore Road about being proactive by doing well in middle school, keeping healthy and becoming involved. Shore Road School’s fifth grade peer buddies also visited Winthrop Avenue School students with advice on doing well in school and in their personal lives. This activity followed with a visit from AAA representatives who gave tips on bicycle

safety. Nassau County police officer Yolanda Turner also presented tips for keeping safe in the community and online, while Christine Arnouse from the Long Island Crisis Center met with sixth graders to talk about anger management and handling strong emotions. The week concluded with a performance by Patricia Shih, Big ideas in Health and Safety, who engaged the school in ideas about healthy eating, getting enough sleep and exercising every day.

During their May meeting, the Merrick Board of Education and administration honored the district’s nine students who were selected for this year’s Nassau County AllCounty Art Exhibit held at Farmingdale State College in March. All-County

artists were nominated by their respective art teachers, who, along with their principal, awarded them certificates of recognition for demonstrating exemplary creativity in their artwork. T h i s year, more than 400 art

educators from more than 200 schools in 50 Nassau County school districts submitted student artwork for this prestigious exhibit. Division Avenue Honors Its Captains Division Avenue High School in the Levittown Public Schools recently hosted its spring captain’s breakfast. Captains of the school’s spring varsity teams were invited to arrive to the school early in the morning where they

were greeted by building administrators and treated to a delicious breakfast. Principal John Coscia welcomed the students and thanked them for their leadership both on and off of the field. Students received certificates for their

commitment and service to Division Avenue High School. The students were recognized for not only being exceptional athletes, but also embodying the character that is expected of ambassadors of Division Avenue High School.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Administrators, faculty, students and families gathered in the auditorium of Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center on May 8 to honor more than 25 seniors seeking to continue their technical education or pursue a career in residential wiring, HVAC, or construction related trades. Known as SkillsUSA and Klein Tools’ first National Signing Day, GC Tech was one of 300 schools from throughout the country to mark the occasion as thousands of U.S. seniors shared their postgraduation career plans. The event, similar to National Signing Day for high school studentathletes, was created to help close the skills gap and raise awareness of career options in the skilled trades. GC Tech, in the Levittown Public Schools, is a unique school program dedicated to teaching comprehensive

career and technical skills. With a dedicated staff, the program offers a hands-on learning experience in a variety of skilled trades such as automotive technology, computer animation, cosmetology, culinary arts, electrical technology and more. With the help of Klein Tools representatives, the school was one of only five schools throughout the country to have their ceremony streamed live on Klein Tools’ Facebook page. GC Tech’s SkillsUSA advisers Kristina Cuomo and Jennifer Pernick helped facilitate the special event. “All of you are so important to the future workforce,” said Ms. Cuomo. “Currently, many companies are finding such a shortage of skilled workers, also known as the skills gap that exists in our nation right now. All of you who are choosing to learn a skill are making advances to decrease that skills gap and making our communities

stronger.” Seniors from GC Tech’s automotive technology, electrical technology and construction management programs were introduced one by one onto the stage as they shared their plans to continue to hone their skills and pursue different trades. Each student announced their future intentions for employment, furthering their education or applying for an apprenticeship program and signed letters indicating their commitment to their futures. The students all received a Klein Tools T-shirt, hat, bag and pliers. Klein Tools representative John Bucci, GC Tech Assistant Director Sally Maya and each student’s GC Tech teacher congratulated them on the stage after they proudly signed. The district congratulates all the students who participated in the National Signing Day and thanks SkillsUSA and Klein Tools for putting together a wonderful event.

Shining A Light Fourth-graders saw light like they never have before during a special science presentation at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Brian Wallrapp,

commonly known as “The Science Guy,” visited the school on May 8 for a special presentation on the three states of matter. Wallrapp showed students the true color

of matter. They watched in amazement as he help up different substances to a small ﬂame, such as graphite, zinc and different kinds of salt, and watched the ﬂame turn different

colors. Students learned about foods and household objects that contain these substances. The young scientists tried on diffraction grading glasses and looked at

the ceiling lights. What normally appears to them as white light was broken down into the different colors of the spectrum with the glasses. Mr. Wallrapp said

that the purpose of his presentation was to expose students to the wonders of science and emphasize the fact that proof is the basis for all scientific knowledge.
