Days To Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won’t Although we’ll want to Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic. As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,
I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I
still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

John Broderick, a work experience coordinator at the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Reading Adventure Project
With summer around the corner, Huntington Learning Centers are kicking off its annual Reading Adventure program for children ages kindergarten through eighth grade. To participate, students first choose books from Huntington’s pre-selected book lists, which include a wide range of high-interest book choices for all grade levels and reading abilities.
Reading Adventure underscores the excitement that a good book can bring into a child’s life. Each participating reader receives a reading “passport” in which he or she record the books he or she reads and writes a journal entry about each. The entire program encourages students to think of reading as a way to explore new ideas, interests, places and
people. “We believe that summer is an ideal time to nurture the reading habit because children have more time to read for pleasure than they do during the school year,” says Dr. Raymond Huntington, founder and chairman of Huntington Learning Center. “Our Reading Adventure program is designed with fun in mind. Our experts have identified a variety
of books for children of all ages and reading abilities - stories that engage children and get them excited about books. Experience has proven to us time and time again that the more children read, the better readers they become and the more they enjoy it - and choose it as an activity they want to do.” Huntington’s Reading Adventure program runs
from May through August. At the culmination of the program, Huntington Learning Center locations will honor participants’ reading achievements. During the celebration each child is recognized for his/her achievement and receives a special award. “Reading Adventure is one of our favorite programs at Huntington because it gets children excited about reading,” says

Day of event registration is $25 for participants 16 years and older; and $5 for children ages 5 to 15; children younger than 5 are free. All pre-registered participants receive a T-shirt. Awards are given to the individual and team that raise the most money. The Wantagh Park walk helps build awareness and raise funds for contending with this devastating disease. The walk is part of a larger national drive to spread the word about scleroderma throughout the month of June. Four Woodland Middle School students have been working to educate the public about overfishing in Long Island waters. Dylan Amblo, Dominique Basso, Kayla Cartier and Rachel Rose are all sixth-graders who are enrolled in the school’s science research program. They received the prestigious honor of recently being named New York State’s firstplace winners as well as one of eight top national
middle school research teams in the Siemen’s,“We Can Change The World Challenge. For their project, titled “Fishful Thinking,” the team researched Long Island’s aquaculture, particularly the overfishing of many species of fish. To prepare for the annual competition, the studentscientists were instructed to choose an environmental issue, research the issue and provide a solution. Through their research
on overfishing, the team learned that with current fishing methods, fishing on Long Island will be nonexistent by 2048. This grim prospect prompted the students to raise $141 for the Cold Spring Harbor research program by selling fish fortune tellers, much like a fortune cookie, with a fish fact inside. They also plan to educate fellow students and adults about this issue, which will affect all Long Island residents.

Greeted by their families, supporters and a shining display of 6,000 pinwheels, Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient and advocate, and other ALS patients, rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus for the annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, marking the halfway point of the ride from Southold to Manhattan, which concluded May 18th. The pinwheels represented the American lives lost each year to ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. During the ceremony, Pendergast presented a check on behalf of the Ride for Life for $150,000 to Stony Brook University to support ALS research at Stony Brook Medicine and the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island. Started in 1998 by Pendergast, the Ride for Life organization raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Ride has raised more than $4.5 million for ALS research since its inception. Each year Stony Brook receives a portion of the Ride’s proceeds to fund research. Senior leadership from Stony Brook Medicine gave Pendergast a gift – a genuine Louisville Slugger baseball bat engraved with the words: “SBU and the Ride for Life ‘Strike out ALS’.” The gift symbolizes Pendergast’s advocacy, courage, endurance and vision in the cause to find a cure for ALS.

National Honor Society Inductions The National Honor Society of MacArthur High School in Levittown added 48 new members to its roster in a ceremony studded with words of wisdom, ceremonial milestones, musical interludes and the honoring of teachers. “We are pleased to honor the academic achievements that have brought you to this induction,” said Principal Kathleen Valentino in her
opening remarks. “Keep studying and expanding your horizons. Be a lifelong learner.” The candlelighting ceremony that explained the qualities required for membership was a precursor to the induction of the newest members. There was a separate acknowledgement of those students who have achieved two- and threeyear membership status in this elite group.
Before the ceremony concluded, school drug and alcohol counselor Jackie Levine received a community service advocate award, and math teacher Kevin Cambria was honored as Teacher of the Year. Both honorees were given a testimonial plaque. After the ceremony was over, everyone was invited to attend a small reception in the school cafeteria.

Most adults remember the popular Chia Pets with their growing grass hair advertised on television in the 1980s. For Mother’s Day, students in Valerie Kovel’s class at East Broadway Elementary School in the Levittown School District decided to make a simplified version of
this creation with grass planters decorated with a face on the front of a cup. The students have been studying the life cycle of plants and the elements that make plants grow. The Mother’s Day project allowed the students to plant seeds, water them and watch them grow. In addition to the Chia
Pet planters, the class also made acrostic poems to describe what the word “mother” means to them. These individual poems were decorated and accompanied by a tissue paper flower, a project that allowed the students to work on their fine motor skills.
Angela’s House Golf Outing Angela’s House plans to hold its Annual Golf Outing at Indian Hills Country Club, located at 21 Breeze Hill Road in Northport, on June 10th to benefit the medically fragile children and families of Angela’s House. They will celebrate the construction of Angela’s House III being complete in Stony Brook.
There will be a full day of golf beginning at 11 a.m., and at 4 p.m. there will be a cocktail hour and dinner. This summer, the Lacrosse Academy will host a Specialty Position Clinic for children ages 8 to 15, featuring intensive instruction for experienced players ONLY. Players 8 and 9 years old must have two years of lacrosse experience, players from 10 to 15 must have 3 years experience. Fastpaced, highly specialized instruction will challenge each player to realize his or her potential. The clinic will focus on individual lacrosse positions (including goalie), with specific and strategic drills to further develop skills and instincts. “We’ve had a number of youngsters grow up in our lacrosse program, gain valuable experience and reach a talent level that warrants more specialized instruction,” continued Supervisor Murray. “Our position clinics were introduced to attract the highly skilled player who wants the best possible instruction in anticipation of playing with a travel or school team.” Two-hour clinics for ages 5 & 6 are priced at $60 per child, the three-hour clinics and the position clinics are priced at $70 per youngster. There is a reduced rate of $50 for additional family members at both the three-hour and two-hour clinics. Lacrosse Academy programs are offered to Town of Hempstead residents ONLY. All payments must be made in the form of check or money order payable to the Town of Hempstead. The Lacrosse Academy will also conduct oneon-one instruction, for youngsters from ages 5 to 15. An hour in length, the one-on-one training will be geared to the specific participant and his or her respective skill level. The one-on-one training will benefit the novice
player, as well as the highly skilled youngster. Training can also be detailed to cover a specific position (including goalie) and the position’s necessary skill sets. Rates for the one-on-one training are set at $35 per hour with a special $90 rate for a set of three lessons. There is a special $25 per hour rate for youngsters who register with a group of three or more. Sessions can be scheduled from Monday to Friday at a town park of the player’s choosing. The hours are flexible and appointments are required in advance by calling the academy office at 516.783.3208. For the weekly and specialty position clinics, completed registration applications, with appropriate payment, are accepted by mail or inperson. The Town of Hempstead Lacrosse Academy, one of Long Island’s top instructional programs, will travel the township this summer, offering weekly clinics, one-on-one and small group lessons and specialty position sessions for experienced players. Supervisor Kate Murray highlighted the diversity of the academy’s training sessions as an effort to reach and teach more players. Nearly 1,500 youngsters graduated with honors from last summer’s Town of Hempstead Lacrosse Academy and a championship caliber staff of renowned coaches and outstanding players are game ready to impart expert instruction on lacrosse fundamentals and strategies. “Since its creation in 2005, the lacrosse academy has stressed fundamentals and fun while working with boys and girls of all skill levels,” commented Supervisor Kate Murray. “The popularity of the program has sky-rocketed through the years, and accountability and affordability have been our goals from day one. We look to keep prices low and enthusiasm high as we prepare for our ninth season.” Again this summer, the Lacrosse Academy will host two-hour morning instruction for 5 and 6 year-olds in partnership with the traditional threehour clinics for youngsters 7 to 15 years of age. The clinics for 5 and 6 yearolds run from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The sessions for ages 7 to 15 are set from 9 a.m. to noon. Evening sessions from 6 to 9 p.m. will be open to youngsters from 6 to 15 years of age. All clinics are open to both girls and boys. Weekly clinics begin on Monday, June 17th and sessions run from Monday to Thursday, except at Oceanside Park (July 1st to 5th), where the program

Art Honor Society Inductions
The W.T. Clarke High School chapter of the National Art Honor Society welcomed nine new members during a candlelighting ceremony in the school’s auditorium. Art Honor Society coadviser Jane Pawlowski explained that in addition to excelling in the visual arts, these creativelyminded students are able to bring their individual talents to this prestigious organization. The society’s newest members are Monica Kwon, Kenneth Lau, Michelle Lau, Kathleen Phomsakha,
Tricia Puchalski, Izzy Rodriguez, Ashleigh Simeon, Suzanne Tillwitz and Hayley Zirkel. Students who were honored at this National Art Honor Society induction celebration are currently enrolled in an art class and have maintained a 90 percent cumulative average in art as well as an 85 percent overall grade point average. The Olympics of the Visual Arts, founded by
the New York State Art Teachers Association, views the visual arts as a discipline that challenges and stimulates youth. The organization also believes that ingenuity and creative problem-solving in the visual arts is vital to a full and enriched life in our technological and scientific society. Under the direction of art teachers Joanna Greenberg and Shari Zimmerman, the entrants were required to exhibit a portfolio with long-term solutions, provide evidence of historical references, provide examples of problem-solving and include sketches and reflections.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin and Councilman Gary Hudes joined the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the organization’s new office on Pettit Avenue. “This is a great day for one of the most active organizations in the Bellmore community,” said Supervisor Murray. “The Chamber of Commerce not only promotes business in the area, it also sponsors family and communitycentered events throughout the year.” The new office, which is adjacent to the Bellmore Train Station is a result of the expansion of the Nassau County Police booth, which is located on Town property. Hempstead Town enthusiastically provided the additional land for
the building’s expansion. The structure will house both the Chamber and the auxiliary police, providing two important services for the neighborhood. “I am so happy that we were able to assist the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores,” said Councilwoman Angie Cullin. Councilman Gary Hudes added, “As past-president, I know how long having a permanent home has been a dream for the Chamber. I could not be happier that Hempstead Town had a role in helping that dream become a reality.” The purpose of the Chamber is to promote the education, success and prosperity of its members, to address the problems and concerns with running a business, to create a voice loud enough to be heard in the world of government decision-making, to foster
business interests and community responsibility and to support each other. In the new office, the Chamber plans to have wall racks to display flyers, menus and business cards for its members. The organization also envisions new residents utilizing the office as a place where they can stop by and learn about what the community has to offer. “The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores is happy to be moving into its new, permanent home and we thank Kate Murray and the Town of Hempstead for all its cooperation,” said Chamber President Debby Izzo. “This office will not only be a benefit to the Chamber and its members, it will be a great resource for the entire community,” concluded Murray.

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress that comes with waiting for
your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter
grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.
