The event supported the New York State social studies curriculum and brought to life an historical event currently being studied in fifth-grade. Students were encouraged to picture themselves in 1862, having just joined the U.S. Army and poised to fight.

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it

took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

Nassau BOCES School Library System (NBSLS) is honored to announce the winners of its two awards for its School Library Month celebration. The winners were selected from 10 applicants in each category by an NBSLS Advisory Council committee. The Administrator of the Year Award goes to Mr. Anthony DeRiso, Principal, Plainedge Middle School, Plainedge UFSD. This award was established in 1986. The Run For Fun To promote physical fitness and staying active, approximately 100 students from the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, along with their friends and families, took part in the fourth annual family fun walk/run on the school’s

Division Avenue High School Junior Arnav Sharma was named a Rensselaer medalist for excellence in mathematics and science. Arnav will receive a $15,000 per year merit scholarship if he decides to enroll at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Arnav is president of

the Mathematics Honor Society and is a member of the Mathletes team. He is also a member of the National Honor Society. Arnav participates in community service activities by tutoring student in math through the national Honor Society and through his preparation on becoming

Summer Portfolio Program The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Portfolio Program, now in its 20th year, is back with a new lead instructor and a fresh new approach. Under the direction of Artist/Instructor Nikki Girgenti, teens ages 1417 will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios as they strive to set themselves apart as artists. The Summer Portfolio Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences,

such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27th-August 14th. Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school

art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with a strong record of success to the Summer Portfolio Program. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Due to the challenge of engaging veterans, LICADD will work to increase awareness of the M-FIT program to reach more veterans and their family members, expand partnerships and work towards removing the stigma associated with mental health needs in the military. Of the more than 700,000 veterans nationally, Long Island is the home to approximately 175,000. M-FIT is designed to build resiliency among returning service members and their families and to help veterans cope with the stress and trauma of their service to our country for reintegration into their community and family life. “We are so grateful to the Long Island Community Foundation for supporting this important program. LICADD will continue to work with partner

agencies to bring about increased support for our veterans mental health needs.” says Executive Director Steve Chassman. Division Avenue Senior and Class of 2015 Salutatorian Christopher Thompson received the Nassau County State Senate and Assembly Delegations’ Students Building Bridges Award

Long Island honored Christopher and other high school recipients, who are working to create a more civil society by volunteering, building ties across different communities and working on intergenerational projects. For his Eagle Scout project, Christopher built a sun shelter for the Levittown Senior Center. He is the Captain of the Division Avenue track team and an award-winning Science Olympian. Christopher will attend SUNY Binghamton this in commemoration of fall, where he plans to Holocaust Remembrance study engineering. Day (Yom HaShoah). Predator Or Prey Gardiners Avenue Elementary School fifthgrade students learned about the tools and behaviors that enable animals to survive in the wild during a lesson by Sweetbriar Nature Center Educator Eric Young. Through the study of skulls and the observation of live animals from the

center, the Levittown students learned about the adaptations and protection techniques of predators and prey. The students first determined whether an animal’s skull revealed it’s being an omnivore, carnivore or herbivore and presented their findings based on the sharpness of teeth. With Young’s

presentation of live animals, including a red tailed hawk, ball python, alligator snapping turtle and rabbit, the students observed and discussed adaptations, including eye positioning and sensory perception, that make each animal a predator or potential prey.

Top Artists Exhibit The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that studentartists from both Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools were selected for exhibition in The Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition. This annual juried exhibition for high school students provides opportunities to exhibit artwork in the museum galleries and to connect with other students throughout the Long

Island community. The exhibit is also part of an arts-in education program that integrates experiences in The Heckscher Museum and the art classroom, culminating with the presentation of original artwork. This year 54 private and public schools submitted work. Of the 311 entries, only 80 works were chosen for exhibition. At Division Avenue High School Elissa Bardhi, Sisam Bhandari and Jean Mahn were selected to exhibit their work. The

artwork of Clis Sabado and Arianna Wynn from MacArthur High School was also selected. In addition to the prestigious honor of being selected, Jean Mahn received an honorable mention for her sculpture “Wave of Peace,” as well as the Donald G. Horn Jr. Scholarship Award and the Joseph Mack Achievement Award. Her sculpture was also shipped to Marshs’ Department Store in Huntington to be viewed by the public.

The feet of the Lee Road Army Brigade marched to the orders of Lieutenant John Portonova, a Civil War re-enactor, who visited the Levittown Elementary School to discuss the American Civil War. The event supported the New York State social studies curriculum and brought to life an historical event currently being studied in fifth-grade. Students were encouraged to picture themselves in 1862, having just joined

the U. S. Army and poised to fight in the nation’s deadliest war. Portonova was dressed in an authentic period uniform. “As privates, you now belong to the U.S. government,” Portonova told the students. After a march around the playground the students settled under a tree as Portonova discussed who served during the war, the death toll, the method of moving armies, and important historical

figures and events. He explained the tools utilized by a soldier by dressing up select students in Civil War gear. After explaining the history behind the holiday known as Memorial Day, Portonova encouraged the students to take the time to honor veterans by going to parades or visiting national parks. “Spend 10 minutes to think about veterans, he said. “That is what Memorial Day is all about.”
