Levittown Council’s Earth Day Event On a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon, more than 135 individuals gathered to welcome Spring and celebrate Earth Day at the Levittown Community Council’s Earth Day Community Cleanup Event. Some of the people represented
participating community groups; dozens of others, including some family groups, joined in on their own to clean up various locations throughout the town including the Bluegrass Lane Pool area; Veterans Memorial Park; East Village Green; the area
around the sump on Hempstead Turnpike across from Home Depot; the area adjacent to the VFW Post on Hickory Lane and the park area on Wantagh Avenue between Entry and Lynn lanes. Event co-chairs Louise Cassano, 1st Vice President and Tom
Kohlman, 2nd Vice President of the Council, worked in cooperation with Joann Medina, social worker with the Levittown School District and Levittown Community Action Coalition to engage students’ involvement and with the Town of Hempstead which
supplied rakes, picks, trash bags, safety vests, gloves and the town’s sanitation department pickup of the dozens of bags containing the trash and debris collected. Organizations represented at the event included Boy Scouts Levittown Troop 316;
Division Avenue Key Club, Kiwanis Club of Levittown, Levittown Soccer Club Girls U13 Dragons; St. Bernard’s Church; Levittown Community Action Coalition Youth Group; VFW Post #9591; and, Wisdom Lane Builders Club.

Hope House Ministries www.hhm.org
Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonprofit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM
acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Sometimes the best outcomes come after the biggest storms. If you would like to inquire about receiving help from HHM, please call 631.928.2377. Additionally, if you would like to make a donation of any kind, please do so whenever you’d like at www.hhm.org/donate.
If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellestanuch@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

The students removed the cylinders, sorted the cables and spark plugs, cleaned the parts, disassembled, and reassembled the engine,
repaired, painted, and got the engine ready for display purposes. The American Airpower Museum holds a collection of nearly 30 historically significant aircraft. The two interns are working on repairing a Curtis-Wright Cyclone R3350 engine, which was developed to power Boeing’s WWII era bomber plane, the B-29 Superfortress.

Go Green When Spending Time Outdoors This Summer
The great outdoors beckons people year-round, but nature is especially enticing in summer, when warm weather compels people to leave their couches and soak up some sun. Spending time outdoors is rewarding, and it can be even more so when men and women take steps to make their outdoor recreation as eco-friendly as possible. Whether it’s choosing certain activities or taking other measures, there are various ways to go green when spending time outdoors this summer and beyond.
• Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.
POWERING THROUGH IN COPIAGUE
PSEG Long Island is proud to safely support local businesses like Reyes Deli with our energy efficiency programs. LED lighting rebates are just one of the ways we are helping thousands of businesses save energy and money every year. Just as the Copiague community counts on Reyes Deli, Long Island businesses can always rely on us. Together, we’re powering through.

• Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that
automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment. • Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for
beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach. • Volunteer with a local park service. The National Park Service offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to individuals who are enamored with the great outdoors and are interested in protecting their local and national parks. Such opportunities can be explored by visiting www. nps.gov/getinvolved/ volunteer.htm. Parks Canada (www.pc.gc.ca) offers similar opportunities to outdoor enthusiasts. Outdoor enthusiasts can make their summers more rewarding by taking steps to be as eco-friendly as possible when spending time outdoors.

the most horrendous of life’s tragedies,” Mr. Ciuffo said. “We hope to see this field bring joy, laughter, memories and many life lessons to the children of Wantagh. This field is about our hero James Lodato. May his spirit live on and guide those who are lucky enough to play on it.” Former Wantagh Little League President Ray Whitaker worked with Mr. Ciuffo to make the James Lodato Field of Dreams project come to fruition. He explained that he never had the privilege of meeting James but knows they would have been good friends since they were both Mets fans. “I would like to thank James Lodato for the friends I have made along the way [during the project] and for bringing us all together.” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder was also on hand and announced that there are plans to build a scoreboard. He reminded the students to be respectful when playing on the field. ”It is important that you remember James
and what he stood for,” Commissioner Ryder said. “To remember James is to remember what he brought to the community.” Nassau County Legislator Steven Rhoads noted that the field is a “great reminder of what the Wantagh community is, neighbor knowing neighbor.” He added, “It’s a special and hallowed place and a [baseball field] generations will be able to enjoy.” Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara congratulated Mr. Ciuffo for his passion for the project and his knowledge of what it would mean for the healing process. “This is a special day for the community,” Mr. McNamara said. “We will learn terrific life lessons [on the field] and honor James Lodato as we do.” Parents Christine and Jimmy Lodato then threw a first pitch to Wantagh Little League players Justin Pabon and Lincoln Kelly, respectively, to officially celebrate the opening of the James Lodato Field of Dreams. After three years of planning and fundraising, the Wantagh School District and community congregated on April 17 at the newly dedicated James Lodato Field of Dreams, located at Forest Lake Elementary School, to honor former student James Lodato (2010-2018), whose life was cut short but whose legacy will always be remembered. The dedication attracted students, Wantagh Little League players, school district administrators, PTA members and community residents who not only worked diligently to see a dream come true but who watched as a young student demonstrated hope, courage and strength during his illness. Former Forest Lake Elementary School Principal Anthony Ciuffo, whose idea to honor James resulted in the baseball field, explained that the new and much anticipated venue is more than a baseball field. “This field will serve as a reminder of how fragile life is and how something so beautiful can come from

School spirit was in the air outside of General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public Schools on April 17. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the school hosted its annual homecoming football game and celebrated its seniors on the football field with safety measures in place such as mask wearing. Prior to the anticipated game against the Carey Seahawks, a senior ceremony was held for members of the cheerleading, football and kickline teams, along with members of the marching
band and color guard. The seniors were invited onto the football field with their loved ones and were announced one by one. The limited crowd of spectators, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, along with Athletic Director Keith Snyder, MacArthur Principal Joseph Sheehan and assistant principals Anthony Allison and Anne Rao, cheered on the soonto-be graduates. “It has been an honor and a privilege to witness these student-athletes for the past four years,” said Mr. Sheehan. “They have conducted themselves
with class, dignity and respect that exemplified the backbone of General Nation.” Junior Shannon Dugan performed the National Anthem to kick off the game. The Generals played their hearts out on the field as the cheerleaders rooted them on from the sidelines. During halftime, the cheerleaders and kickline team entertained the crowd by performing spirited routines. Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of
Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and
neglect. Alleykatz has a strict adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home
visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait
if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). If you are interested in learning
