Rainforest Study

Levy Lakeside School in Merrick visited the Planting Fields Arboretum, where they learned about the climate, geography, wildlife and importance of rainforests. Students completed a scavenger hunt in the arboretum greenhouse, discovering different foliage found in rainforests and identifying products obtained from these regions, such as fruits, sugar and syrup.

Music and art were the forefront of a spring showcase at Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue middle schools on May 12th. Grand Avenue Middle School Principal Carlo Conte said art teachers have been working hard all year with the students to organize this colorful display. “This event transforms our hallways and classrooms into an amazing gallery of art,” he added. Pre-concert duets and

trio’s were performed at the entrance to the auditorium as guests marveled at the artwork. “The work that was showcased included a variety of material: cut paper collage, oil pastel, colored pencil, graphite, acrylic, watercolor and tempera paint,” said Danielle Steiding, a Merrick Avenue art teacher. “I am extremely proud of the students and the work that comes out of them at such a young age.” Afterward, band and choir members performed

various numbers, treating the audience to an evening of vocal and instrumental music, with “styles varied from Beethoven to ragtime to Lady Gaga,” according to the districtwide middle school Orchestrea Director Michael D’Addio. “All of the performances were of high-quality and were well received,” added Music Director Richard Gilley. “At the end of the concert the band and chorus performed ‘God Bless the U.S.A.’ together for the finale.”

In the Merrick School District, Birch School Students Against Destructive Decisions club visited the assisted living home, The Bristal, in Westbury. The organization’s first visit was for Valentine’s Day where 30 fifth- and

sixth-graders performed friendship and love songs, created crafts and interviewed Bristal residents to learn more about their lives and enjoy memorable conversations. In addition Bristal resident Walter Flaertty taught the students “God Bless

America.” In April, SADD club members returned to share reports about their Bristal friends and perform more songs, including “God Bless America,” in tribute of Mr. Flaertty who had since passed away.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

various teams from the district and community raised nearly $90,000. Calhoun’s A Cup for a Cure was the top fundraising team, raking in $15,000. Kennedy’s Student Government team came in second, raising more than $12,000. As for individual fundraisers, Calhoun’s Nicole Imhof, a senior All-County softball pitcher, topped the charts with more than $8,000. The overnight event included a festive opening ceremony, dancing, walking, sports, replay races, food, movies and camping. A middle-of-

the-night break from the wet weather prompted some outdoor activities, including a somber luminaria service served as a reminder of why 450 participants came together that evening. “There were people from Kennedy, Mepham and from every part of our community - people who came to this event wanting to remember someone special in their lives who survived or were lost, and wanting to join together to eradicate this disease,” Hollings said.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay. Addiction Paradigm to Examine How Dietary Restriction and Level of TOR Signaling Modulate the Effects of Drugs, found that dietary changes protected adult fruit flies from the negative effects of caffeine. “While caffeine is not considered an addictive

drug, her project found that male fruit flies are more vulnerable to some of the negative effects of caffeine during development and in adulthood than are the female flies,” according to the ISEF website. ISEF is considered the world’s largest science competition for high school students. The awards are coordinated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health, and Friends of NIDA, a coalition that supports NIDA’s mission. The Intel ISEF Addiction Science Awards were presented at a ceremony on May 13th in Phoenix, Arizona.

Bus Service Begins

NICE Bus begins its Jones Beach State Park service, the n88 out of the Freeport LIRR station, starting Saturday, May 28th. Non-stop service from Freeport will run 8:30 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday on Memorial Day weekend and the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. Beach service will operate on weekends through June 25th when daily service begins and continues through Labor Day. The bus runs every 30 minutes and stops at the beach’s two bathhouses and the Central Mall. The one way fare is $2.75. NICE accepts its GoMobile payment app, MTA MetroCard and coins (no dollar bills) for payment. Jones Beach features a host of family attractions including two swimming pools, a miniature golf coarse, and expansive beaches with a two-mile boardwalk. The park features 6.5 miles of ocean beaches for surf bathing, and a half-mile bay beach for still water bathing. Jones Beach is also home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, which offers educational tours and programs for all ages. Student Qualifiers Three teams comprised of eight W.T. Clarke Middle School eighth-graders have qualified to compete in the state competition of the Long Island Science Congress, Junior Division, to be held in Buffalo, New York, on June 4th. Sponsored by the Science Teachers Association of New York State, the Long Island Science Congress exhibits the science projects of middle, junior high and senior high school students in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Projects encompass the fields of behavioral science, biology, chemistry, earth,

energy, space, ecology and physics. To qualify for states, the East Meadow teams conducted original research in chemistry and ecology, along with a threemonth experiment. They presented their research at the Long Island Science Congress, Junior Division, held at St. Anthony’s High School on April 12th. Sherin Davis and Deeti Patel placed first in chemistry with their experiment, “What is the

Effect of Varied Acidic Fertilizers on the Metal Intake of the Filter?” Placing second in the same section were Mark McMahon, Ankit Sayed and June Yeup Seong with their project, “What is the Effect of Temperature on the Efficiency of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell?” Arianna Fracchioni, Ana Pinto and Fardeena Yousuf placed first in ecology with their research project, “What is the Effect of Filter Type on the Hardness and Clarity of Contaminated Water?” The district wishes all three teams the best of luck as they compete in the state competition.

Third-graders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District recently participated in a mystery Skype call. The students in Lindsay Struss’ class, with the assistance of technology teacher Allison Bloom, played a geography game

that challenged them to solve the mystery of where the Skype call was coming from within the United States. The mystery call turned out to be from the class of a former Chatterton student who now lives in South Carolina. The Merrick students

correctly guessed the location based on conversations about the landscape, climate and historical monuments. They gained valuable knowledge about geography while enjoying a fun activity.

Three teams comprised of 13 seventh- and eighthgraders from W.T. Clarke Middle School competed in the Lego School Robotics Competition at Adelphi University on May 7th. During the competition, more than 30 teams from Long Island and New York City delivered PowerPoint presentations to a panel of judges that outlined the challenges they had faced, lessons they had learned and obstacles they had overcome in building and programming their robots. Guided by their technology coaches, the students had applied

their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to build Lego robots that could solve real-life problems. Teams then battled in four rounds of competition, where their robots were required to complete a challenge – collecting balls and staying within the contest area – to acquire the most points during an allotted time period. Elliott Oppenheim’s and William Burke’s seventh- and eighth-grade technology classes fielded three teams: Team Robo RIK, consisting of Isabella Petz, Kristina Romano

and Raheem Sheikh; BOT Squad, comprised of Nyla Jane Batista, Hadi Javed, Alexandra Karavias, Victoria Lorusso, Isabella Michaelis and Ryan Walsh; and Team LAJE, made up of Anjali Aggarwal, Emma Brown, Lilli Greene and Jeena Trinh. W.T. Clarke Middle School placed first in the presentation segment of the competition. The district is tremendously proud of these students for the diligence, collaboration and engineering skills they demonstrated during the competition.

Junior Recognized

Every year at Holy Trinity High School, during the Junior Academic Awards event, ten scholarships are awarded to students towards their senior year tuition. One of these scholarships was given to Erin McMahon of Rockville Centre, who received the Claire O’Neill Imbornoni Award for Scholarship in the Sciences. The Claire O’Neill Imbornoni Award for Scholarship in the Sciences was established in

memory of Claire O’Neill Imbornoni who graduated in 1973. In her years at Holy Trinity, Claire was a true leader. As class officer on the Student Council, on the field with the softball team, on the court for volleyball, or as captain of the winning team at Sports’ Night, she loved to involve herself with her classmates. After earning a degree in psychology, Claire returned to school to achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a registered

nurse. Although the award is about excellence and extraordinary effort in the field of science, which Claire loved, her family notes that it’s as much about the unique experience and lifelong bonds that come from being part of Holy Trinity. Miss McMahon has a 100 average in Honor Physics and her teacher says ,“her perfect grade reflects a commitment to mastery and understanding.”

Smiling from Year to Year Students at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District raised more than $3,000 through the sixth-grade “Acts of Kindness” fundraiser to provide Reagan, an elementary student in Kenya, with another year of schooling through the nonprofit organization Reason2Smile. The Class of 2015 embarked on this journey last year, providing Reagan with a full year of schooling, supplies and the opportunity to learn in a classroom. According to its website, Reason2Smile’s mission is to financially assist impoverished orphans and at-risk children living in developing countries with a safe living environment, proper nutrition and a good-quality education. With a fundraising goal of $300 — the cost of sending an elementary child to

school for an entire year — sixth-graders held a twoweek “Acts of Kindness” fundraiser in which students found sponsors to support their kind acts. Students recorded their acts of kindness, and sponsors contributed a flat rate for their participation or assigned any dollar amount of their choosing for each act performed. To supplement the effort, sixth-graders of Deborah Cain’s and Victoria Ryan’s classes sold Kenyan crafted and Reason2Smile bracelets over the two weeks. The bracelets symbolized community, with an emphasis that all people are connected in some way. On the final day of the fundraiser, Donna Rosenblum, CEO of Reason2Smile and a former Chatterton parent, paid a special visit to the school. She spoke

to students about Keela Dates, the founder of Reason2Smile, discussed her own involvement in the organization and encouraged students to get involved with an organization they feel passionate about. Following her presentation, the Class of 2016 presented Mrs. Rosenblum with a donation check for $2,884.85 from their Acts of Kindness fundraiser, Kenyan crafted bracelet and Reason2Smile bracelet sales. After presenting Mrs. Rosenblum with the check, the sixth-graders raised an additional $350 from their bracelet drive. The district commends these students for their benevolent acts and extends its gratitude to all of the Chatterton School faculty, administrators and sixth-grade teachers who made this event successful.

Powered by STEAM Mandalay Elementary School third-grade students in Wantagh looked to the sky as their handmade Stomp Rockets propelled towards the sun during a workshop with STEAM Powered Learning. Instructors Joan Soldano and Janice Katz discussed the parts of a rocket and instructed

the students to render their artistic versions on paper, incorporating a cone, fuselage and fins. After designing a rocket out of paper and tape, they launched their space vehicles in the schoolyard using PVC pipe and a plastic water bottle. The Stomp Rocket workshop was one of

several designed to induce creative thinking in a collaborative environment, while utilizing the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. Other workshops included Make it Rain, Balloon Brainstorming, Lunar Landers, Defying Gravity and Pasta Rovers.

History Bee Qualifier W.T. Clarke Middle School eighth-grader Ankit Sayed won the National History Bee New York Regional Finals, qualifying him for the national finals in Chicago, June 9th-June 12th. students first complete an online qualifying exam. The top scorers on that exam then compete in the regional finals, and the top finishers in the regional competition advance to the national finals, vying for the title of National History Bee Champion. Along with competing in the national finals, Ankit will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of side events, including the Great History Hunt,

National Citizenship Bee, Pop Culture Challenge, Family Quiz Night and ACE History World. The East Meadow eighthgrader also qualified for the U.S. Geography Olympiad’s National Championship through the qualifying test administered at the National History Bee New York Regional Finals. The district wishes Ankit the best of luck as he advances in the competition.

Rainforest Explorers

Coinciding with their study of Brazil and the rainforest, third-graders at Norman J. Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District visited the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, where they learned about the climate, geography, wildlife and importance of rainforests. Students completed a scavenger hunt in the arboretum greenhouse, discovering different foliage found in rainforests

and identifying products obtained from these regions such as fruits, sugar and syrup. Following their expedition, the thirdgraders discussed the four layers of the rainforest emergent, canopy, understory and forest floor - and classified which animals would be found in each layer. The tour guide educated the students about the different types of

rainforests and the current situation of these regions, in addition to emphasizing how important the rainforest is to our survival. The trip concluded with a guided tour of the Coe Hall mansion, which sits on a 410-acre estate donated to New York State by William Robertson Coe and his family to preserve the historic structures and HISTORY BEE QUALIFIER - Lisa Scully, social studies department chairperson at landscape. Abuzz with Bugs Abbey Lane Elementary School students in Levittown were entomologists as they studied the parts of insects during a workshop with the Long Island Children’s Museum. During a discussion

about creepy, crawly bugs, presenter Rebecca Figueras explained insect habitat and survival and demonstrated where the head, thorax and abdomen were located on most insects. Figueras even shared her walking

stick, a common bug that resembles a stick. After the lesson, the students worked with clay and other decorations to design and create their own bug, composed of the three insect parts.

Computer Careers Senior computer animation students Robert McCoy and Darren Pitts, enrolled in Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Education Center, were first-place winners for 3-D computer animation and visualization in the Long Island Media Arts Film Festival held at Five Towns College on April 1. Teacher Christopher Fedorczak explained that the eight seniors and juniors who entered the festival presented 2D and 3-D videos that took three months to produce. According to Mr. Fedorczak, the goal of GC Tech’s two-year computer animation program is to “introduce students to the field of visual arts and graphics, presenting them with the knowledge of true opportunities that exist in the field.” In the first year of the program, students focus on traditional art skills and learn about the professional art industry, applying that knowledge to a variety of projects using 2D animation and utilizing industrystandard programs. Projects

include looping animation (repeating an animation over and over), walk cycle (walking across a screen), write-ons (someone appears to write on screen) morphing, stop motion claymation and more. The students progress to 3-D animation skills, which encompasses video game design and character animation, resulting in the students’ creation of short animated films or digital movies. Students are expected in the second year of the program to take the information formerly learned and to apply it to more complex pieces of work. Students study advanced 3-D animation, character animation, gaming development and product design. In addition to learning how to edit their animations, they also create an interactive, DVD digital portfolio. The most complex project in the second year, however, is the senior project, which requires them to create an animated film. Mr. Fedorczak also noted that during their

A Stitch in Time During a visit by the Long Island Children’s Museum, Gardiners Avenue Elementary School fifth-grade students in Levittown became acquainted with the patterns imbedded in quilts, often referred to

as freedom quilts, which helped to guide slaves to safe passage on the Underground Railroad. Presenter Jessica Egan explained the hidden messages inside the quilt patterns, including the log cabin (possible safe house),

flying geese (north when warm), bear’s paw (follow bear tracks in mountains) and more. Students then recreated either the North Star or flying geese patterns using fabric squares.

STEAM Night space mission patches and took the Rube Goldberg Challenge by creating a simple system for moving a car. In the Lunar Rover workshop, students calculated the distance and speed of their vehicles, while stomp rocket participants propelled their rockets into the air. Students also worked in teams to create marble mazes and tested whether their egg would crack in the Egg Drop Challenge. They designed created clay boats and loaded them with paper clips to test buoyancy during the workshop called What Floats Your Boat? Like the Lunar Rover workshop, students created and then tested the distance their

puff mobiles would travel by simply blowing on their vehicles. One of the highlights, however, was the chance to Skype with former astronaut Don Thomas, who traveled on Columbia and Discovery during four separate missions. Director of Science Kevin McDermott noted that the students enjoyed the challenges presented to them in the individual workshops. “The evening was also an opportunity for parents and their children to collaborate on an educational activity and to acquire a closer look at the district’s STEAM initiative,” he said.

Wantagh Middle School eighth-grade student Lara Dunphy received a perfect score for her art portfolio submitted at the New York State Art Teachers Association’s Portfolio Project and Adjudication. The Portfolio Project provides evidence of student understanding and learning in the visual arts,

and feedback is available for the student and teacher during the annual spring event. Participation in the middle school level of the Portfolio Project requires the student to include an artist statement, selfportrait and an art piece based on research of an artist, artistic style,

big idea or nonwestern culture with a reflection about the exploration. The student must also submit an art piece based on an observation that best reflects his or her choices on how to present a subject. Two choice artworks that best represent the student as an artist is also included in the portfolio.

Making a Splash Shore Road School student council members involved with the Operation Splash organization visited students in Stacy Reiner’s third-grade class at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore to demonstrate ways to protect Long Island’s environment. The sixthgrade environmentalists have been working with the grassroots environmental organization by clearing storm drains around their community streets and

writing to the town about environmental problems and issues. The Shore Road School Operation Splash volunteers, under the direction of advisers Carolyn Acevedo and Kelly Popielaski, led the younger students in a variety of games, lessons and activities to drive home the value of being savvy environmentalists. The Winthrop Avenue students learned which everyday items should be recycled

or placed in the trash, made a bottle cap fish bowl craft, read Dr. Michael J. Kruger’s book titled “Footsie and Lunko Meet Captain Al,” and played hopscotch out of recycled paper and bottle caps. The goal of the program was to further educate the third-graders about the importance to recycling and to promote the Shore Road School’s involvement with Operation Splash.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s English departments are proud to announce that several classes won the Achieve3000’s National Read to Succeed 2 contest. From February 22nd

through March 18th, every time a student in a class completed a multiplechoice activity, the class earned a point. For every score of 75 percent, the class earned two points, and for every score of 88 percent or higher, the class

Division Champs Named The Sanford H. Calhoun High School girls track and field entered the Nassau County Division 2A Championships on May 17th as an underdog but left as champions. Knowing they needed to get out to a fast start Cristin Rodriguez and Juliann Vizoso took the track for the first event of the day, the 400 intermediate hurdles. Neither have ever ran this race in the past, but both knew they had to reach past their abilities for the team; and that they did. Rodriguez led the way running a personal best and taking first, not far behind was Vizoso who took three seconds off her previous best to finish second. Next up would be the 1,500-meter race. “Calhoun has always been known for their distance program, but today the girls solidified themselves as one of the best in the county,” said coach Joseph Migliano. Senior Captain Grace Moore would win the 1,500-meter in stellar form and right behind her were fellow teammates: Emma Joseph and Christina Garbarino. The girls placed first, second and fourth in this race; but this was just the beginning of their long day ahead. Shortly after winning the 400 intermediate hurdles, Rodriguez would get back on the track for the 100-meter hurdles, beating the rest of the field by more than

one second and setting her personal best time with a 15.3-second run. The 800-meter race was set up to be a very fast and competitive race, but that didn’t bother Moore or Vizoso. Moore took first again to claim her second division title and Vizoso was right behind her for another second-
