Magnificent Moms In honor of Mother’s Day, Jill Hecker’s secondgrade class at Bowling Green Elementary School held a tea to celebrate their magnificent moms. Teary eyes filled the room as each student took center
stage to share an acrostic poem they had written for their mother. Each letter in “mother” expressed one of the reasons why their parents mean the world to them. After reciting their poems, they presented

their mothers with a hug, a kiss and a rose. Following, the students and their mothers enjoyed cookies, cupcakes and iced tea as they captured the event’s memories on their phones.
Wantagh Middle School eighth-grade students Cristian Barberio and Riley McCann were winners in the Nassau Reading Council’s annual Young Author’s Contest. The purpose of the annual competition is to encourage writing in the classroom, with this year’s entry focusing on the writing of a personal narrative. Entries were
judged on originality, content, authenticity, voice, focus, organization and mechanics. Winning entries will be honored at an awards ceremony, being held at Molloy College on June 5th. In addition, winners’ entries will be published in the NRC Young Author Contest Book. In his narrative writing, Cristian depicted a moment
in time when he knew something was wrong with his grandmother, who had just learned she had cancer. Riley wrote about memories evoked in finding postcards from her grandfather while cleaning the attic with her brother. The Wantagh School District congratulates both students on this outstanding accomplishment.

Fifth- and sixth-graders from all three schools in the Merrick School District participated in a Scrabble tournament sponsored by the Merrick Kiwanis at the Merrick Public Library on May 15th. Scrabble Club members from Birch, Chatterton and Levy Lakeside schools prepared for the competition by practicing strategies against one another during their lunch and recess periods
throughout the school year. During the tournament, teams of two from each of the Merrick schools competed against students from the Progressive School of Long Island and Camp Avenue School in the North Merrick School District. All of the participants enjoyed a day of friendly competition and had a rewarding experience demonstrating what they
had learned in their clubs. The district would like to thank school librarians Vanessa Schroeder (Birch), Ellen Widawsky (Chatterton) and Melissa Levine (Levy Lakeside) for their support and guidance in managing their schools’ Scrabble Clubs throughout the year. Becoming Pieces of the Game building exercises that focused on sportsmanship, character education and collaboration skills. The students separated into red, blue and green teams, which corresponded to the color-coded sides of the life-sized game board mats. They took turns rolling the dice and performing the activity based on where their roll landed them on the board. Games included “What a Puzzle,” where groups raced against each other to
assemble a puzzle; “That’s a Wrap,” which tested how fast a Chatterton staff member could wrap toilet paper around three students; and “The Hustle,” which determined the team that could hulahoop the longest. The school extends a special thank-you to the PTA and the program’s DJ Cashmon for hosting a day of friendly competition, laughter and teamwork.
Division Avenue High School students Sonia Inderjit, Dawn Kim, Jennifer Luong, Michael Mulqueen and Annie Tao recently placed second in the Long Island Regional Envirothon at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The competition is an annual environmental studies contest, which engages the
next generation of environmental stewards in activities that promote the protection, preservation and restoration of natural resources. Students competed in the areas of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and agricultural preservation by rotating between the subject stations and answering questions as a team. Each subject area test was
made up of 25 multiplechoice questions, many of which were hands-on and involved the use of equipment, maps and/or audio-visual devices. The district congratulates the team on this outstanding accomplishment.
Elise Shallbetter, a junior at East Meadow High School, had the privilege of learning about local government firsthand when she participated in the Town of Hempstead’s 18th annual Students in Government Day on May 15th. She was one of 13 students throughout the township to take part in this educational
opportunity. To achieve this, Elise submitted a 250-word essay about local government, describing how it works and discussing issues she felt should be addressed. She also indicated which department she was most interested in exploring. Along with lessons on local government, Elise’s day at Town Hall included
exploring the parks and recreation department, attending meetings and participating in a mock emergency weather drill. The day concluded with all students engaging in a Q&A session with Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and Council Members.

The Levittown Board of Education and administration wish to extend their appreciation to all residents who voted. The budget, which was approved 1,511 to 627 will enable the district to continue to provide quality instructional and co-curricular programs for students. “On behalf of the Levittown Board of Education, administration, staff and students, I wish to express my gratitude for the continued support of our community through their approval of the 2015-2016 budget,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald stated. “It is through a supportive school-community
partnership that we have been able to create an environment where our students are nurtured, challenged and encouraged to achieve to their fullest potential. “ Additionally, Proposition 2 for the establishment of a 2017 Capital Reserve and Proposition 3 for expenditure of remaining monies from the 2013 Capital Reserve were also passed. Thinking Thursdays have sixth-graders engaged in collaborative, problemsolving activities at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Once a week, the students team up and participate in STEAM challenges to practice their abilities in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Recently, students in Nicole Giusto’s and Kathy Panchyn’s classes completed the gumdrop house challenge. Each group received 10 gumdrops and 20 toothpicks and had to build a structure that could withstand the weight of a textbook. They tested different shapes including triangles, squares and diamonds, and recorded their results.

Gumdrop House Challenge Past activities have included constructing a house of cards, a catapult that could fire a small ball into a basket, and a straw boat. The challenges build upon each other so children can take lessons learned one week and apply them to other STEAM activities. For example, they discovered that a strong base is needed whenever the challenge involves building a structure. The teachers explained that these projects foster cooperative learning and critical thinking in a hands-on setting. Students may experience frustration when one idea doesn’t work, but also show great patience and determination in trying to solve each challenge.

Division II Championship The young women of Wellington C. Mepham’s softball team capped off a 13-2 season record by clinching the division II championships. Senior catcher Samantha Arcese was awarded All-County Honorable Mention. “She did an amazing job calling the games,” said coach Jen Greco. “She has true talent for and understanding of the sport. She is arguably one of the best catchers in the conference. She had at least one pick off each game, with multiple pick offs in several games.” Junior third baseman Kara Castaldo was also awarded All-County – for the second year in a row. “Kara has been playing on the varsity level for three years now. She had
her first homerun this season, and didn’t stop there,” added Greco. “She ended the season with a batting average of .462 and two homeruns and 22 RBIs.” Junior shortstop and All-County honoree Kelsey Vandewater batting average .467, 10 doubles, 13 RBIs and 23 runs scored. Senior Stephanie Burns, who pitches and plays centerfield, was named All-Conference. She saw 31 strikeouts with 27.1 innings played. Freshman right fielder Brianna Morse earned All-County Honorable Mention. In her second year playing for Mepham, she hit her first homerun this year and led the team with a .587 batting average, 26 RBIs, 7 doubles and four triples.
“She is a player that can be put anywhere in the field and she will always make the play,” Greco said. Greco considers junior second baseman Kerri Donlon the most improved player this year. “Her bat came alive this season,” she added. “She had a .524 batting average, with nine RBIs and 11 runs scored. I’m looking forward to see what she can produce next year.” Greco touts the team’s supportive nature, work ethic and team spirit as their key to success. “They were always there to cheer the other on and lift them up when needed,” she added. “I truly believe this is what helped the girls to be so successful this year, on top of the natural talent that they all possess.”

Volunteering in D.R. Division Avenue High School student Ryan Dwyer took his passion for volunteering to the Bateyes region of the Dominican Republic. During spring break, Ryan volunteered with the nonprofit group Tuesday’s Children Helping Heals where he was sent to the impoverished village of Monte Coca. During his visit, Ryan assisted with
construction projects, including the building of a house and latrine, laying cement on a dirt floor and roofing. Ryan noted that his Spanish skills learned in Levittown assisted with communication and newly made friendships with the villagers. He was also able to experience Easter celebrations during Dominican Republic’s
Holy Week when the villagers brought the volunteers a traditional dessert and played games, Bachata dance music and basketball. “In the end, the connections I made with the people of Monte Coca and with my peers in my group left a lasting effect on the way I perceive the world,” Ryan said.

The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Judith A. Hynes, a veteran educator who has been with Nassau BOCES for nearly ten years, has been named Executive Manager of District Programs for the Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs (RSIP). The position is a brand new post created to expand the department’s capabilities, and Ms. Hynes was first choice to fill this important office. The role of Executive Manager is a natural extension of the critical work Ms. Hynes has been doing as Principal for RSIP. During her tenure at Nassau BOCES, Ms. Hynes has made a substantial impact on the agency’s Alternative Education programs. Under her leadership, enrollment in Regional Summer School has grown to more than 25,000 students in 28 districts across Nassau County, with significant increases in the passing rates on the New York State Common Core exams. The Twilight Alternative High School program has also experienced considerable growth, expanding from two to nine schools. In considering Ms. Hynes for the Executive Management position, Nassau BOCES Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lydia M. Begley and RSIP Executive Director Gene Silverman agreed that Ms. Hynes must not be

Gold Exam Winners Several middle school students in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District earned gold medal status on the recent national world language exams. At Merrick Avenue Middle School, Michelle Serban earned Oro (gold) on the National Spanish Exam. Serban, who is in Ms. Erin Yaltzindeg’s class, will receive a monetary award at the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese ceremony in June.
“This year, each teacher in the World Language Department selected students to participate in the national contests for French, Italian and Spanish,” said World Languages Chairperson Rosa Kaplan. Grand Avenue also had several gold medal winners including Ms. Melissa Steinhaus’ Italian contest gold winner, Jake Arlia, who was the lone winner for his category. He earned a monetary prize and a free two-week language course
in Italy. Mr. Richard Zawislak’s French gold winner was Gina Millheiser-Benson. Mr. Sean Doherty and Ms. Marie McDonnell are also proud of their gold medal winners Phillip Barbera, Julia Collins, Eimaan Kahn and Stamatia Papzis. “To earn the prestigious gold medal recognition, students must place in the 95th or higher percentile on the exam,” added World Languages Chairperson Renee Fallon.

Calhoun Writing Contest Sanford H. Calhoun High School sophomore, Faith Maldonado, was selected as the second-place winner of the Kenneth F. Gambone Writing Contest. Maldonado was nominated by her English teacher, Dawn Boland, to participate in the contest back in March. She submitted an entry about
the theme “We are more alike than different” and was selected by the English department as one of four Calhoun representatives. After submitting a second entry about a topic of her choice, Maldonado was selected by the Long Island Language Arts Council as the secondplace winner out of all
of the 10th-grade entries from Nassau and Suffolk counties. She has been invited by LILAC to be honored for her efforts at their spring luncheon, during which she will read her submission, “Internalized Hatred and Other Handbag Accessories of a Teenage Girl.”

Breakout EDU Kits In an effort to promote the four C’s — critical thinking, creativity communication and collaboration — students in the North Bellmore School District have been trying their luck with Breakout EDU kits. The kits mimic the escape room concept, as students have to find and decipher clues to open locked boxes. Teacher Gayle Angert has already done several breakout scenarios with third- through sixthgraders in the district’s
Alpha gifted and talented program. Students split into teams of five or six students, search the classrooms for clues and work together to figure out the codes that open various locks. Typically, they get 45 minutes to “break out.” There are hundreds of scenarios to choose from. Ms. Angert said that she has done a Dr. Seussthemed breakout with third- and fourth-graders, and recently students in fifth and sixth grade had to find the codes to avoid
being stuck in an infinite loop and repeating the same day over and over again. Items that give clues include playing cards, code sheets and black lights that can help students find messages written in invisible ink. The children can also use Chromebooks. “This is all about higherlevel thinking,” Ms. Angert said. “It’s about the teacher stepping back and letting them solve the problem.”

Benjamin Araya, from the Animals of Farm Sanctuary in upstate New York, recently presented a lesson on humane education during a skills class at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, giving students the opportunity to visit the sanctuary right from their classroom seats. The focus of the pilot study was titled “Meet the Animals: A Virtual Tour of
Farm Sanctuary.” “We take students on a virtual tour of the sanctuary through photos and video and introduce them to the animals who call Farm Sanctuary home,” said Araya. “For 60-minute presentations, we even provide the chance for students to experience Virtual Reality technology using VR headsets to watch a Farm
Sanctuary production that transports viewers right into the pastures of our farm and brings them face to face with the animals” As part of telling the animals’ histories, Araya shares background on the conditions these animals came from and the realities of the modern food system in an age-appropriate way.
Annual Fitness Walk Bellmore students and families slipped on their sneakers and athletic wear to join in on the fun during Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center’s annual Fitness Walk. For the past several weeks, students have been working to better
their levels during recess, and the Fitness Walk is a culmination of these physical education activities and initiatives. Principal Patricia Castine also noted that the Fitness Walk not only encourages students to exercise more, but is a great activity for

Annual Spring Concert chamber orchestra, fifthand sixth-grade chorales, chorus, select band and band. Under the batons of orchestra director Kathy Rostholder, vocal director Laura Laude and band
director Zach St. John, the student-musicians performed a variety of classical and popular tunes to the delight of peers and family.
Several students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District excelled on their World Language National Examinations this year, earning the highest Gold honor status. “Our winners competed against students from across the country and they scored in the 95th percentile or higher in the country on the National French Contest, the National Italian Exam and/ or the National Spanish Examination,” explained Renee Fallon, world languages chairperson at John F. Kennedy High School and Grand Avenue
Middle School. These competitive exams are administered annually across the country to over hundreds of thousands of students. At John F. Kennedy High School, first-place winners of the National French and Spanish Exams included Jonathan Ivers (Spanish), Madeline Jutsen (Spanish), Mikayla Gorelin (Spanish), Sal Bernardini (Spanish) and Katherine St. George (French). Wellington C. Mepham High School’s Spanish 4H student Monica Melgar and 2H students Caitlyn Cannon and Eriene Corr each earned Oro (Gold)
on the National Spanish Exams. These students will receive a monetary award at a ceremony. Their teachers are Ms. Lo Monaco and Ms. Morales. Additionally, Ms. Hayes’ French student Matthew Waters earned Gold on this year’s level two National Exam. More than nineteen-thousand students competed on this level. At Sanford H. Calhoun High School, students who earned Gold scores on the exams included Victoria Eisenberg (French), Senya Huda, Lauren Jones, Michael Piacquadio and Jessica Zhang (Spanish).

Kind Words for Mom First-graders at the John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District had to share their desks on May 12th, but they didn’t mind making the space for these guests. The school hosted its annual Mother’s Day Tea so the students could honor these special
people. The occasion gave students in Jennifer Kafka’s and Lori Chandler’s classes an opportunity to develop their literacy skills. Each child wrote a story titled “My Mom,” which were shared when everyone gathered for the Mother’s Day celebration.
Students also made paper teapots, drew portraits of their moms, read the poem “Thank You Mommy” and created top ten lists of reasons they love their mothers. Together, the children and their special guests shared cake and iced tea.
Full STEAM Ahead Hands-on exploration delighted children who attended STEAM Night at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District on May 10th. The event, hosted by the Shared Decision Making Team, focused on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Students in kindergarten through second grade attended a demonstration by Mepham High School physics teacher Bill Leacock, who lay on a bed of nails and had a student use a sledgehammer to break a brick on his chest. The children then rotated through centers in the cafeteria where activities included art lines, math games, excavation of rocks and minerals, worm
exploration, sunflower planting, a buoyancy challenge, gravity races and more. There were numerous workshops for thirdthrough sixth-graders including coding with Ozobots and circuitry with Makey Makey and Little Bits. Mepham High School students led activities in chemistry, physics and water Olympics. Martin Avenue family members shared their talents as an engineer hosted a catapult challenge and a neuroscientist led a microscope workshop. “STEAM Night was really fun because it wasn’t just sitting and watching,” said third-grader Eamon Andrews. “We actually got to do things and try out all of the experiments in
chemistry.” The program ended with a parent member of the Shared Decision Making Team, Dr. Mario Medina, using heat to get an egg into a glass bottle. “STEAM Night was another wonderful example of what we can achieve as a Shared Decision Making Team when parents, administration, and teachers work together on behalf of our students,” said Principal Leyna Malone. “It was incredibly rewarding to see the joyful, mindson learning taking place throughout the night. Our students were engaged in authentic learning activities, experiencing STEAM in a very real, yet very fun way.”

Students and families gathered at Forest Lake Elementary School in Wantagh for the second annual STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) night on May 10th. During the well-attended evening, students explored their skills at 15 different stations, including Build a Boat to Float a Sailor, egg
drop, Spaghetti Strength and marshmallow shooters. Principal Anthony Ciuffo explained that the evening was an opportunity to expand the district’s STEAM initiative and to explore all of the STEAM concepts. “The evening also encourages students to get out and explore and find their interests,” he
said. Students used foam and spaghetti noodles to balance objects, built parachutes and constructed bridges out of straws. held at the North Shore Equestrian Center/LIU Post recently. The Horse Science and Management course at Barry Tech teaches students the skills and knowledge necessary to care for horses. Students learn how to properly feed, handle, and manage different breeds of horses using all

Community Helpers about the various roles of workers in the community and how they assist in making the community a better place to live. During the unit, they read and wrote poetry and literature about various jobs, graphed who they felt
was the most important community helper and created a class PowerPoint presentation about various community helpers in Levittown. The students then paraded around the school dressed as their favorite community helper.
There were squeals of delight as Gardiners Avenue third-grade students in Levittown attended an assembly with Nature Nick and his amazing animals. Nature Nick introduced the students to an albino kangaroo, eagle owl,
monkey, armadillo, flamingo, African pigmy hedgehog, snake and turtle. The assembly reinforced and introduced new facts about animal habitats in the grasslands, desert, rain forests, ocean and ecosystems currently being studied in the classroom.

Classroom Chicks As Wantagh kindergarten students participated in their lessons at Forest Lake Elementary School, they could hear the soft peeping noises that resonated from the incubator holding bright yellow chicks. This spring, students have been studying the life cycle of chickens and other
oviparous animals. For their study, farmers from Makinajian Poultry Farm in Huntington, New York delivered fertilized eggs, an incubator and supplies, so that the kindergartners could observe firsthand the hatching and growth of the chicks. In Robin Conte’s class,
the students placed blocks on the floor of the classroom and allowed the chicks to roam free as they observed the fluffy yellow visitors. Ms. Conte even allowed the students, with assistance, to hold the chicks as they marveled how downy their feathers felt in their hands.

Earthworm Habitats During their monthlong study of earthworms, kindergarten students in Christine Wilkinson’s class at Lee Road School in Levittown not only learned how to care for nature’s greatest decomposers, they created an earthworm habitat by preparing a
compost bin. The students each shredded two pages of newspaper into strips and then placed the paper in a plastic bag. Students then added and mixed eight cups of water and two cups of soil. The mixture was placed in a compost
bin where one cup of vegetables was added as food. They learned that as the worms eat, they turn the compost bin substance to mostly soil.
A Morning of Music A school year of learning and practice culminated in Winthrop Avenue School’s annual fourth-grade spring concert, held in the school auditorium, for family and peers. Under the direction of Kathleen Rostholder and Zachary St. John,
the orchestra and cadet band performed a mixture of classical and modern pieces, while the chorus, led by Erica Davis, performed more popular music by Justin Timberlake and Bob Marley. Dance choreography by teacher Mallory Cogen and
piano accompaniment by student Valentino DeLuna rounded out the program. In addition, the Recorder Club, advised by Erica Davis, performed one piece, Don Muro’s “A Touch of Spain.”

Honors for Tennis Team The MacArthur High School girls tennis team was named Long Island High School Team of the Year during the 27th annual United States Tennis Association Long Island Region awards dinner, held at Chateau Briand Caterers in Carle Place on May 3rd. The Lady Generals were recognized for the team’s Aces for
Autism clinic on the tennis courts at MacArthur High School on April 18th. More than a dozen students enrolled in the school’s Applied Behavior Analysis program attended the tennis clinic. Additionally, through the sale of T-shirts and baked goods, the team raised $450 for autism awareness charities. One of the most exciting
parts of the evening was the opportunity to meet Gigi Fernandez, who has won 17 Grand Slam titles and two Olympic Gold medals. The district congratulates the student-athletes on this outstanding accomplishment and philanthropic endeavor.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th Annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd, raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their
families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing, there has been tremendous
opportunity and strides forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini of the Suffolk County Police Department was honored as LICADD Community Champion.
Conference IV Championship
LICADD applauded Commissioner Sini’s approach to addressing the opioid epidemic. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. With Commissioner Sini’s support, LICADD and Suffolk County have partnered to operate a 24-hour substance abuse hotline. This successful program is entering its second year. The evening’s Keynote address was offered by filmmaker and advocate, Greg Williams. His ground-breaking films, The Anonymous People and Generation Found
have changed the way addiction and recovery are viewed, discussed and supported and has started a movement. LICADD was honored to have Mr. Williams share his powerful story. It takes a village and we appreciate your interest, support and participation. For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and

With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and participates in public policy advocacy.
Audubon Honoree Annie McIntyre, Regional Environmental Manager of Long Island for New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and Bill Brown, Park Manager, Hempstead Lake State Park will be honored by the South
Shore Audubon Society. At the organization’s annual dinner, on Tuesday, June 13th, they will each receive the Elliott Kutner Conservation Award. The awards are presented for dedicated commitment to environmental conservation on Long

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 32nd annual Golf Classic this year will honor the hospital’s senior leadership – President Kenneth Roberts, Senior Vice President for Administration Kevin Murray, and Vice President for Administration Wayne Shattes. The trio will receive the John T. Mather Founder’s Award for their combined 103 years of
leadership, dedication and service to Mather Hospital and the communities it serves. The event, which benefits Nursing Education Programs at Mather, takes place Monday, June 5th, at the Port Jefferson Country Club. Shotgun starts are at 8 a.m. and 1:30 pm. Cocktails, buffet dinner, program, dessert and raffles are 6:30 to 8 pm.
