Moving Forward Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment. By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise. If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you? Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive? Situation: Someone is driving and trying to cut into your lane with good reason. Some people (whatever their motive) will pull up closer to the car in front of them and not allow this. Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains. with Clark Lambert

The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. A Sweet Victory The Division Avenue High School music department recently traveled to Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania where they shared their musical talents at the Music in the Parks Festival. The school’s symphonic band, string orchestra, mixed choir and chamber choir represented Division Avenue and Levittown with a high standard of music performance. The school competed against eight school districts and more than 1000 student participants. The chamber choir, under the direction of

Alison Sellars, received first place with a rating of Superior, while the mixed choir earned second place with a rating of Excellent. The string orchestra, under the baton of Mark Martufi, scored second place with a rating of Excellent, and the symphonic band, under the direction of Michael Bastone, received first place with a rating of Superior. In addition, the symphonic band took home the prestigious award of Best Overall Concert Band. “It was a proud moment to hear that my band performed so well, but what

I am most proud of is the culmination of all of our performing groups coming together to represent the Division Avenue music department and Levittown Schools in the most positive way through music,” said Bastone. “The music department’s success is due to the hard work and dedication not only of the students, but also the teachers and my colleagues, Mrs. Alison Sellars and Mr. Mark Martufi. I am lucky to work with such passionate and talented educators and musicians.”

Students Celebrate Mom It was a festive afternoon as Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center kindergarten students in Christine Wuchte’s and Kerri Sanpietro’s classroom hosted an afternoon tea on May 11th in celebration of Mother’s Day.

In addition to dressing their best, the Bellmore kindergartners sang songs, recited lines from the poem “I love my mom” and presented their mothers with a hand-crafted pin to show their appreciation for her love and dedication. Even Ms. Wuchte’s and

Ms. Sanpietro’s mothers, Maryanne Meyer and Rose Dowd, respectively attended the gathering, where guests received handmade cards and sweet treats to commemorate the special occasion.

The students used apps such as Apple Clips, ChatterPix, Do Ink, iMovie and Pic Kids

to record and edit their videos using iPads. They hosted a viewing party for their classmates, teachers and administrators, and after each commercial students gave their peers compliments. Each group also had to create a brochure for their museum. Ms. Graber said students used a variety of online resources to do their research. The sixth-grade social studies curriculum focuses on ancient civilizations.

Author Visit Bowling Green Elementary School students, in the East Meadow School District, learned that if they want to become good writers, they must become prolific readers. Such was the advice of Joe Shandrowski, author/ illustrator of “Huga Tuga in the Dinosaur Adventure,” who explained that reading assists in the understanding of sentence

structure, expansion of vocabulary and fueling of the imagination. He also explained that many of the books he has read assisted in his storylines and fueled his imagination on most writing projects. “The foundation of writing is reading,” Shandrowski said. “Reading helps to make an original idea creative, interesting and effective.” During his theatrical

He also recommended that students jot down their ideas and allow their ideas to grow through reading. “A book can change the way you look at things, so keep reading,” he advised.

It was an evening of accolades and celebration as 289 East Meadow School District students were honored at East Meadow High School, on May 8th, for their talents and accomplishments in the areas of music, art and humanitarianism. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth A. Card, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. David Casamento and Director of Music and Art Dr. Christopher Hale opened the ceremony by highlighting the exceptional students for their accomplishments over the course of the school year and thanking the teachers, administrators and parents for their continued support of the district’s fine arts program. “We are extremely proud of the significant accomplishments of our

students who are being honored tonight, and we are grateful to you, their families, their building leaders and their teachers, for the role you have played in their success,” Dr. Card said. Following his welcoming remarks, four students from each of the district’s nine schools were recognized with humanitarian awards for leading by example, promoting sensitivity and respect for diversity in school, and fostering tolerance through service to the school community. Music highlights included the district’s eight-time recognition by the NAMM Foundation as one of the Best Communities for Music Education, as well being the only New York State school to receive the prestigious New York State School Music Association Presidential recognition twice. One student was

selected for a National Association for Music Education All-National Honor Ensemble, eight for NYSSMA All-State Honor Ensembles, six as All-State alternates, 144 for All-County music ensembles and 23 as Long Island String Festival participants. In the area of art, 66 students were recognized as All-County artists. Twelve participated in the Long Island Art Teachers Association Art in HeART Exhibit, while 12 students’ artwork was selected for the 2018-2019 budget book. Additionally, 32 students exhibited their work at the Tilles Center/ LIU Post Patrons’ Lounge. As each student accepted their award, family members, central administrators, faculty and members of the board of education applauded their creativity, diligence and compassion.

Scholar Athlete

Division Avenue High School senior Dylan Chase was recently recognized as a News 12 Long Island Scholar Athlete, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Chase was awarded a $1,000 college scholarship for academic and athletic excellence. The four-star athlete played baseball, football, lacrosse and wrestling throughout his high school career and was nominated for the Scholar Athlete distinction by his football

coach, Jeff Schiereck. Among his many athletic achievements, Chase was the recipient of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Award and was All-League honors for wrestling. He will be attending the University of Chicago in the fall. “He is a young man of fine character who is well liked by all who come in contact with him,” said Schiereck. “As a football

New York State Sen. Kemp Hannon has announced five East Meadow High School students as winners in the seventh annual Youth Leadership Award contest. Seniors Valerie Garcia,

Sydney Inger and Kristen Kavanagh were recognized for community service, while juniors Sabera Hossain and Christopher Forrler were recognized for academics and athletics, respectively.

The Youth Leadership Award contest honors promising young adults in the 6th Senate District who have demonstrated leadership in the areas of academics, art, athletics and community service.

Drama Students on Stage Wantagh faculty, students and residents who admire the work of William Shakespeare were in for a treat with three performances of Wantagh High School’s drama production “Cry Havoc,” held on May 10th-12th. An adaptation of “Julius Caesar” by director Heather Naughton, the play was performed in-the-round on the high school stage

with minimal effects and with a modern storyline. The same characters from Shakespeare’s version, were performed by Samantha Walsh (Julius Caesar), Emma Vines (Calphurnia), Emily Stacy (Brutus), Melissa LoPiccolo (Portia), Lindsay Whiteman (Caius Cassius), John Sileo (Mark Antony), Billy DeVito (Casca), Gabby Scibelli (Caius Ligarius),
