Fourth graders from Gardiners Avenue and Northside elementary schools in the Levittown Public Schools recently participated in the financial literacy program, Money and Me. The program is run by students from Hofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business and the School of Education. Partnering with Capital One Bank, the college students educate elementary students on how to be financially responsible individuals. Assistant Principal Dyanne Case from Gardiners Avenue and Northside elementary schools, brought the program to both buildings due to its interactive curriculum which incorporates mathematics and English Language Arts concepts, as well as practical applications, in every

lesson. Fifth graders from both buildings attend a trip to Commerce Plaza so it was important to have the fourth graders be exposed to money management as well. The Hofstra University students visited each school for several weeks to facilitate about 12 lessons with the fourth grade classes. The students were educated on important topics such as wants vs. needs, savings accounts, sources of income and expenses, budgets, checking accounts, credit and debit cards, inflation and investments. Each class was also a given virtual savings account and earned play money throughout the program for participating and asking questions during lessons. Classes could withdraw the virtual money from their savings account to purchase program rewards. On the last day of the program, the students took a quiz to see how much they learned and each student received a drawstring backpack for their participation. “It was fun,” said Gardiners Avenue fourth grader Angel Marroquin. “I learned what it means to be financially literate and the difference between a debit and a credit card.”

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present.
One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Division Avenue High School students also attended the ceremony with teacher Mark Engels and Assistant Principal Jaclyn Guidice. The students proudly earned the Poster Rookie Award and $1,000 for their poster on the role of an Assistant General Counsel. The students used their Photoshop skills to bring their creation to life. The Spark! Challenge is designed each year to ignite student
interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics healthcare careers. Earlier in the year, both teams participated in different on-site experiences to observe a Northwell Health career. Students were then asked to create a career advertisement for one of the careers that they observed during their visit to Northwell Health. They connected their career advertisement to Northwell Health’s Culture of C.A.R.E. (Connectedness, Awareness, Respect, and Empathy) patient promises and each team conducted a two-minute presentation for Northwell’s senior executives during the ceremony which related to their project.

Third Straight Conference Title Bellmore-Merrick Central School District’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School girls track team not only won their third straight conference title on April 29, but they now have the longest winning streak in Nassau County at 51 in a row. Every week throughout the season, the girls would face a different task from running against some of the best sprinters in the state or having to compete with the perennial county champions Manhasset Indians in the first league meet of the year. As each week came and gone, however, the girls would always wind up on top, with only Manhasset coming within 25 points of them. April 29 was the girls last league meet and one they have been looking forward to all year. They would take their 11-0 record with them as they traveled to MacArthur High School to compete against the generals and cross town rival Mepham Pirates. If the players lost to even one of these teams, it could jeopardize their entire season. “The girls had a focus about them that entire day in school. You could tell hours before the meet began that it was going to be a good night,” said coach Joseph Migliano. Calhoun got out to a fast start, taking first and second in the 400-meter hurdles, and following that up with first, third and fourth in the 1,500-meter race.
“Our distance crew has really stepped up all season,” Migliano. “They are young, strong and motivated to be special.
