Clarke athletic program. The event welcomed participants of all ages and featured a 1-Mile “Fun Run” as well as a 5K street race. Pictured are the students taking off at the starting line. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that its 27th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating Hope Springs Eternal, held on Monday, May 12th, at the Garden City Hotel, raised over $250,000 to support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention and intervention programs for children and families. More than 275
New York students who currently benefit from the programming will be denied access to the services moving forward. With this fact in mind, the Harvey and Gloria Kaylie Foundation has issued a challenge grant: If the center can raise $30,000 by June 15, the foundation will match it. Assistant Principal Named Matthew Zegers has been appointed to assistant principal of the Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh. Zegers started his career at Nassau BOCES in 2011 as a program coordinator at the Regional Special Education Technical Assistance Support Center. In that position, he focused on specially designed instruction,
literacy and behavior. He also provided professional development to school districts and technical assistance to help improve outcomes for students with disabilities. “I am very enthusiastic to work with the students, and to see them grow and become functional members of society,” said Zegers. I strive to provide the most assistance that I can for the wonderful
teachers here at Rosemary Kennedy so that they can uphold the integrity of Nassau BOCES.” In his new role, Zegers will be responsible for both the high school program and district programs. Zegers previously worked as a special education teacher in the Baldwin UFSD for eight years and at Camp Anchor for 10 years. He knows some of his current students from

Counting Down The Days To The End
As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close. These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here. St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall. Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a
graduating student, I feel torn between emotions. It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers. It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have influenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can
give back a medal to a school that has given me so much. If I could start over as a freshman, I would do it all the same. There is nothing about St. John’s that I would have changed. If you are on the fence about sending your son or daughter to St. John’s, do it. It is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. St. John’s is an environment that breeds leaders. Coming from a senior, SJB is a place where a family is formed. I would not trade my years here for anything. They say high school is the best time of your life, and so far, this rings true.

Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy
working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult
responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.
Most of these students would not have access to these programs because funding has already been cut in so many of the schools throughout the region. The reason the Gold Coast Arts Center is able to provide these programs to the schools is because they have sought out grants from sources that support this kind of work. Unfortunately, many of those granting bodies have also cut their funding and they are now facing the prospect of cutting these programs by the year 2015 if they don’t raise sufficient funds to pay for the teachers and materials. “We are very grateful to the Kaylies for their encouragement and investment in our work and ask the larger community to help us

event, which is part of the Regatta, to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders. An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band. This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100. This year, The
Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m. For those who wish to participate but do not own a sailboat, paddleboard or kayak, rentals are available. (ADRC) will host its Second Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay. Levittown’s Salk Middle School students Andrew Jacobs, Shreyas Sagi and Jared Schwartz have qualified for the National History Bee’s 2014 National Finals Competition in Atlanta, Georgia in June. Sponsored by the History Channel, the history bee challenges students in grades six through eight on their knowledge of presidential facts, world and American history, and cultural literacy. Jacobs, Sagi and Schwartz were top
finishers in the regional finals in Orange, N.J., on April 17th. History teacher Samantha McKevitt said she is excited that three Salk Middle School students qualified for the national contest. When asked how he prepares for the competitions, Jacobs said he studies from the official guide provided by the competition. “I am also grateful for the knowledge I have received at school,” Jacobs said. “It really helped me get through the
regional competition and prepare for the nationals.” “I do a lot of reading,” Schwartz said of his preparation. Sagi agrees that reading is a great preparation tool. “I also prepare with the guides on the History Channel website, watch movies and study history facts,” he said. The Levittown School District administration and staff wish the students much success in Atlanta this June.

Twenty-eight minutes and thirty seven seconds after the starting horn sounded, 12 year-old Luke Anderson crossed the finish line on a beautiful Saturday morning elated with his accomplishment. A leukemia survivor, Luke joined his family and other participants at the WalkRun for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon’s 5K race. This 8th annual event began in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Luke’s mother, Evelyn Anderson, a former South Setauket,
resident, who wanted to celebrate her son’s life by running a race in his honor. In 2013, Luke ran with his older brother, Patrick, and their mom, and this year the sports-enthusiastic family, including younger sisters, Ciara and Shannon and dad Todd, drove from their New Milford CT. home the night before to rest up in a local hotel and get to the start line with 609 other participants – onequarter of them supporters of Friends of Karen. “It was amazing to see the support of all these people, running, walking and
raising funds for Friends of Karen,” said Evelyn. “And heartwarming for our family that we have an opportunity to give back to this organization in this fun way.” Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,900 children in the New York tri-state region.

Showcasing Talent Woodland Middle School eighth-graders in the East Meadow School District impressed friends, family and faculty with their wide range of musical talent
during the school’s eighthgrade spring concert on May 7th. The program featured a number of musical performances by the jazz
ensemble, eighth-grade orchestra, eighth-grade chorus and eighth-grade concert band.
On May 7th, the Levittown School District Board of Education, by a majority vote, appointed Dr. Tonie McDonald as the district’s next superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2014 through June 30th, 2017. “The Board of Education has taken the responsibility of selecting a new superintendent very seriously,” said Board President Kevin Regan. “After input from all of the district’s stakeholders, and as a result of working with a professional national search firm, we are extremely confident that Dr. McDonald possesses the professionalism, experience, character, communication skills and vision to lead our school district to even greater levels of success.” The district utilized the services of a national leadership search firm, which conducted an online
survey to determine the leadership qualifications most important to the community. The response to this survey played a major role in defining the final criteria for the selection of the most viable candidates. From a pool of more than 25 highly qualified applicants, the search firm selected and presented five candidates for board consideration. “Dr. McDonald is an outstanding choice,” said Regan. “Her professional qualifications, combined with her prior experience working in our school district, made her the majority choice of the board.” “I would like to thank the Board of Education for the confidence they have shown in me,” said Dr. McDonald. “I am looking forward to working with the Board of Education, administrators, staff, parents, students
and community residents to move our students and school district to the next level of success.” Prior to serving in her current position as assistant superintendent for business and administration in the Plainedge Union Free School District, Dr. McDonald served as an adjunct professor at both Hofstra University and Dowling College, as well as in several positions in the Levittown School District, including assistant superintendent for business and finance, director of pupil services, social studies chairperson and district testing data coordinator. Dr. McDonald possesses a Doctor of Education from Hofstra University, along with a Master of Arts in secondary education and a Bachelor of Arts in social sciences from Adelphi University.

Unlocking Creativity Students at Mandalay Elementary School in the Wantagh School District unlocked their creativity during the annual Special Events Day, sponsored by the PTA. artist from Mobile Ed Productions introduced the students to the “art of silence.” The students were taught the differences between writing for the stage and writing for the page, and spent time in the classroom writing stories for the performer to act out. In addition, art educators from the Heckscher Museum of Art conducted a visual arts workshop.
On large squares, the educators wrote in the margin: “I unlocked my imagination; I started with… and imagined a …” Using construction paper shapes, the students were instructed to create a picture that reminds them of the shape. The teachers collected the artwork and connected each of the squares to make a quilt.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has designated MacArthur High School juniors Eduardo Sandoval and Grace Shin as high scorers on the 2013 PSAT exam administered in October
2013. This achievement places them in the top 3 percent of the 1.5 million students who took the test, and qualifies them for consideration as either semifinalists or

As part of the curriculum in Christine Compagnino’s accounting class at Wantagh High School, students studied how to understand W-2 forms and prepare federal income tax forms. As a culminating activity, the students participated in Tax Day, preparing simulated federal income tax returns for adult volunteers, including administrators and staff. Ms. Compagnino explained that learning how to prepare taxes is an important life skill.
“So many people don’t understand taxes,” she said. “Even if they don’t prepare their own, they should be adept at understanding the tax preparation process.” Prior to working with the students, volunteers received a packet of fake information, including their employment, salary, names of children, marital status, etc. The packet also contained the volunteer’s W-2 form. After volunteers handed the students their W-2 form, the students were expected to ask them pertinent information to

complete the tax return. Accounting student Megan McLoone, who is looking to study business in college, found the exercise advantageous. “I was able to interact with adults and see what it was like to work in the real world,” she said. Ryan Quinn, also an accounting student, explained that preparing for Tax Day made him feel as if he had acquired important skills. “I am really confident that I can now prepare my family’s taxes,” he said.

The purpose of the Wantagh High School cast Greater Long Island Running Club is to promote and foster running and fitness all and crew drew a full house on the opening night of over Long Island. Romeo and Juliet, based on William Shakespeare’s tale of the course of true love. Under the direction of Heather Romano, the cast did not follow a strict interpretation of the tragedy. Audience members did not witness a play set Verona, but instead a setting placed in 1920s New Orleans during Mardi RUN RECOGNIZED - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Gras. The scenes were Gary Hudes presented an official Town of Hempstead Citation to the Greater Long represented with large Island Running Club in fitting recognition of its 5K Run, to be held on June 14th. The boxes, painted in Mardi run is dedicated to the memory of the late James F. Rice, who was a history teacher at Gras colors with large Jonas E. Salk Middle School in Levittown. Math Fair Held For the 17th year straight, Holy Trinity students brought home medals from the annual LI Math Fair held at Hofstra University. Freshman Emily Khozouri of Hicksville took home a gold medal and sophomore Taylor Martin of Uniondale won a silver medal. Ms. Khozouri’s project was on Pascal’s Triangle
and Ms. Martin did her project on Math in Archery. Math teacher, Mary Clare Pellett, coaches the team and was very proud, “Our students work very hard and they always reap the rewards.” Holy Trinity High School is a private, co-educational Catholic high school founded in 1966 drawing students from Nassau,
vibrantly colored masks to assist in the actors’ exploration of character and setting. “The play is a bit existential,” said Ms. Romano. “My thought was that the characters of Romeo and Juliet, played by Robert Kawecki and Carly Censi, would represent children who believe they are in love. I wanted the scenes to incorporate building blocks that would create a playground.” Choreographers included Tylar Benedetto, Brianna Russo and Samantha Sanpietro. The dramaturge was Lynde Rosaro and the production’s business
manager was Courtney Prestianni. Stage manager Lyric DeMaio, production manager Brendan Egan and assistant director Sanpietro were also integral to the production’s success. The talented cast included Christopher Borger (Mercutio), Patrick Constant (Montague), Taylor Costello (Tybalt), Tyler Dema (Friar Lawrence) Brendan Egan (Benvolio), Kayla Knight (Lady Capulet), Nikoleta Mountanos (Lady Montague), Kevin Pugh (Escalus), Jordan Rabinowitz (Capulet), Rick Roberts (Paris) and Judy Streib (Nurse).

Undefeated Season The MacArthur Junior Varsity A baseball team recently completed an undefeated season with 18 wins. In addition to an undefeated season, the team also won all of its scrimmages. They scored more than 10 runs per game, and the dominant pitching staff allowed less than one run per game. The pitching staff was comprised of Justin Norcini (6-0, 0.74 ERA), Joe Ryan (5-0, 0.45 ERA), Max Ziegler (5-0, 1.17 ERA), Mike Sivilli (1-0, 0.39 ERA) and Christian Burke (1.17
ERA), with Bobby Lewis as a valuable contributor (10, 0.00 ERA). Offensively, Justin Norcini, Brandon Fitzgerald and Mike Sivilli batted over .400. Jared Wolfe and Matt Deblaiso led the team by each batting an even .500. Deblaiso also led the team by hitting four home runs, while Wolfe hit for the cycle against Baldwin High School. There were numerous highlights throughout the season, including turning a triple play,

back-to-back no hitters thrown by Norcini and Ryan, and several multihome run games. Making outstanding defensive plays also became routine for the Generals due to the skills of Matt Imbrogno, Marc Arboleda, Phil Razza and Nick Pernice. It was truly a true team effort with each and every player contributing to make this a season to remember. Coach Dasch and Coach Nappi are proud of the team for their hard work and dedication.
School Of Character “We are excited to have received this award,” Zampaglione said. “The school is being recognized for its overall good student behavior, tone, traits and characteristics we strive for in the R.I.S.E. program.” Zampaglione said the R.I.S.E. program – which stands for respect and responsibility, integrity, safety and staying healthy, and empathy – was implemented approximately five years ago. He explained that the administration could have purchased a packaged character education program, but that the development of R.I.S.E has been more meaningful and real. “If you walk through the
halls and a student drops a pencil, you can surely see another student bending over to help his peer pick it up,” Zampaglione said. “Respect is a tenet that we teach our students through the character education program, and they adhere to its guidelines.” On May 21st, a representative from the Academy for Character Education will analyze the R.I.S.E. program more closely and will determine whether Salk Middle School should be chosen as a turnkey school, or an example to schools throughout the nation that are struggling with behavior issues.

The W.T. Clarke High School and Middle School athletic community held its sixth annual Run with the Rams fundraiser on May 10th, with the proceeds benefiting a local family in need and the W.T. Clarke athletic program. The event welcomed participants of all ages
SkillsUSA Club members enrolled at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Education Center in Levittown acquired eight medals at the New York State competition for career and technical schools. In addition, firstplace winners Bridget Glennon, Julie Skeggs and Julia Vargas qualified to compete in the National SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Missouri, in June. The Levittown students not only received an opportunity to test their skills against other career and technical education students throughout the state, they were also able to meet and network with professionals and representatives from their related industries and test their leadership potential through the job demonstration and job interview contests. “The students have been preparing for this competition for months and have displayed a true passion and commitment for their career and technical field of study,” G.C. Tech director Gerri Fox-Wilson said.
During the May 7th public meeting of the Board of Education, each of the students was honored for having acquired medals in the regional and state competitions. “Nothing is more relevant than what we are doing at G.C. Tech to prepare students for the workforce,” Principal Joan Lorelli said.
