SUPER PARTY TIME

eddy bears and stuffed animals accompanied Forest Lake Elementary School kindergarten students in Wantagh, who attended a Teddy Bear Clinic hosted by Stony Brook Children’s Hospital to prevent trauma and promote safety. After the educational portion of the program, the students paired up with students from Farmingdale State College’s School of Nursing to dress like doctors and nurses, to bandage their teddy bears and administer “vaccines.”

LICADD delivers prevention programs aimed at bolstering children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Too Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. Three Months & Still Swimming Strong

anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I

don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so

much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

On May 2nd, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws hosted their firstever Inlet Ride Bike-AThon in Westhampton Beach. Over 100 bicyclists participated in this event, with funds raised going to benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck. MacArthur High School student-musician Brianne Giuliano was awarded The Howard Lee Koch/ Dora Clark Memorial Award bestowed by the Long Island String Festival Association, an association of Nassau and Suffolk counties string musicians. She was

one of four students who received this prestigious award in association with her performance at the Nassau County Senior High School LISFA String Orchestra Festival earlier this year. Walt Whitman Winner Wantagh Middle School student Grace Anne McKenna is the eighthgrade, level C winner in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s 29th Annual Poetry Contest.

Grace’s winning poem, “An Innocent Flame,” was considered outstanding by the association’s distinguished poetry judges. There were more than 3,000 entries for

students in grades 3-12. Grace Anne will be awarded at a celebration that will take place at the Walt Whitman Birthplace in Huntington on May 31st.

Learning Fiesta First-graders at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center celebrated the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo in a multitude of ways on May 5th and 6th. Rotating through four stations, the students worked on their Spanish

language skills by playing BINGO, created Mexican flags, read a short story about the life of a Mexican boy named Pedro and compared his life to their lives in Bellmore, and enjoyed a snack, which consisted of chips, salsa and water.

In preparation for the event, the students constructed homemade serapes using paper bags and colorful paint in their art classes. The annual event was organized by Reinhard Spanish teacher Lisa Goldberg coordinated the event.

Bottle Cap Art

Instead of allowing bottle caps to hit the landfill, Wantagh Middle School seventh-grade art students are utilizing them in their artwork. Under the direction of teacher Jaclyn Gentilesco, the students are painting and gluing the recyclable materials in the form of a mural, a rendering of Vincent Van Gogh’s iconic

“Starry Night” painting. “We chose ‘Starry Night’ since it is a painting that is familiar with everyone,” Gentilesco explained. “The students have done such an excellent job reinventing it with the use of bottle caps. The project also gives these bottle caps a new purpose, beautifying our school.” The students first created a mock up of the

painting on paper. They sorted the bottle caps, deciding which ones would look best in each portion of the painting, redrawn on a cardboard cutout. After the bottle caps are glued, the cardboard-backed painting sections will be put together, much like a puzzle, and hung in the school.

Levittown’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School has been recognized as a New York State School of Character by the Academy for Character Education at the Esteves School of Education of the Sage Colleges in Troy, New York. This year’s Honorable Mention Award is a step up from last year’s Emerging School of Character Award that recognized the school’s outstanding character traits exhibited and leadership initiatives provided through the R.I.S.E. Program. Principal John Zampaglione said he is extremely proud of the students who have incorporated so many of the R.I.S.E. principals in

their everyday behavior. “The school strives daily to demonstrated good behavior, tone, traits and characteristics we teach in all of the activities associated with our character education program,” he stated. The R.I.S.E. Program – which stands for respect, integrity, safety and staying healthy and empathy – was implemented six years ago and was created in-house, making the program more meaningful and real. The program focuses on the tenet of respect. During the 20142015 school year, the program has expanded to include the infusion of additional classroom

character education activities. The school is currently developing a survey regarding school climate and areas that need improvement. The new Connections Club identifies students that demonstrate R.I.S.E. characteristics and honor them on a bulletin board, which helps to increase selfesteem, and random acts of kindness are continually recognized. There are also plans to utilize the Parent Portal to infuse character education principals. During the middle school moving up ceremony, the administration will also present a boy and a girl with the new R.I.S.E. Character Education Award.

Autism Awareness Throughout the month of April, students and staff in the Bellmore School District celebrated Autism Awareness. At Winthrop Avenue, Kerri-Ann Sanpietro’s class kicked off the month by wearing blue and

selling Autism Awareness bracelets. To culminate the month of awareness, Mrs. Sanpietro’s class traveled to Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center where they worked together with students in Katy O’Bier’s class to make blue puzzle

Submitted by Denise M. Poveromo... My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

Prestigious Award A number of exceptional students were honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. Each of the honorees was celebrated for a variety of remarkable traits including talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. The young scholars received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. “These students exemplify the very best of Nassau BOCES,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Robert J. Hanna said of the young award winners. “They are a wonderful testament to the success of the instructional programs we offer. Each of them has shown the true spirit of George Farber and their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.” Outstanding students have been earning this prestigious award since 2007. Boogie To The Beat A part of the social studies curriculum and their current study on how different countries portray the art of dance, third-graders at Winthrop Avenue School are participating in a special ongoing dance program.

To kick-off the learning, students worked with Theresa Diaz-DiLallo, from Circle of Dance, for two days on dance styles from the United States of America. Working with Ms. DiLallo, the students created a complete dance routine

to Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy.” An instructor will return several more times throughout the remaining portion of the school year to highlight other dance cultures from around the world.

Teddy Bear Clinic Teddy bears and stuffed animals accompanied Forest Lake Elementary School kindergarten students in Wantagh, who attended a Teddy Bear Clinic hosted by Stony Brook Children’s Hospital to prevent trauma and promote safety. According to SBCH, trauma (or injury) is the leading cause of death among children under 17 years of age and can be preventable in most cases. SBU Trauma Center

Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator Kristi Ladowski said the program’s goal is to provide the tools for students to keep themselves safe in the car and on bicycles. “We want to make students aware that it is up to them to keep their own bodies safe,” Ladowski stated. During the program, the students listened to safety tips, including wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle and wearing a

seatbelt in the car. They also learned that the back seat is safest for children. After the educational portion of the program, the students paired up with students from Farmingdale State College’s School of Nursing to dress like doctors and nurses, to bandage up their teddy bears and administer “vaccines” to their stuffed animals. Because school mascot, Forester, is a bear, he paid a visit to the classroom.

LACROSSE DAY - Annual Lacrosse Day festivities were hosted by the Levittown Tomahawks at MacArthur High School. The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that Division Avenue High School band teacher Michael Bastone is one of 213 GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy Music Educator Award national quarterfinalists. In total, more than 4,500 nominations were submitted to the Foundation for consideration. The Music Educator Award recognizes kindergarten through college educators who have made a significant contribution to the field of music

and receive a $10,000 honorarium. The nine finalists will also receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10 finalists will receive matching grants. Bastone came to the district in 1998, where he first taught band at Salk Middle School. He has been a band instructor at Division Avenue High School for five years and conducts the band and jazz ensemble. He also started the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. Bastone believes the main ingredients of a successful music program lie in support from the administration and the ability to have a good rapport with students. “I want to assist the students in making their best music,” he stated. Fourth-graders at Winthrop Avenue School took a virtual tour through the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York on May 4th. Led by the director of multimedia Bruce Brodersen, Bellmore students learned how

baseball has evolved and saw exhibits on Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson and Lou Gehrig, who they’ve been studying in class. Gehrig, also known as “The Iron Horse,” is being spotlighted as part the fourth-grade unit on character education. As part of the character unit

of study, the students also performed a mini play, which honored his life. Through the live videoconference, students participated in a question and answer dialogue with Brodersen during their virtual trip through the past.

Recognizing Excellence stage in Levittown Memorial Education Center to be congratulated by members of the Board of Education and administration. It has been a year of accomplishments for the Levittown School District science program. On the middle school level, Salk

Middle School students competed in the FIRST Lego League Robotics Qualifying Competition. For the 12th consecutive year, Wisdom Lane Middle School’s Science Olympiad team qualified for competition on the state level, having earned 26 medals during the

regional competition. High School students acquired various medals and honors including Best Presentation in the North Shore LIJ Feinstein Institute Medical Marvels Competition by MacArthur High School students and Division Avenue High School placed in the top

eight percent of teams statewide. Sabrina Chasen, a MacArthur High School student, was named a Rensselaer Medalist and Division Avenue High School student Joey Nepravishta won first place in the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Model Bridge Contest and

Bellmore-Merrick Student Honored Matthew Giandalia was honored recently with the George Farber Outstanding Student Award. He earned the award for his talent, commitment, honesty, diligence, compassion and high moral standards. Matthew received the award during a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Matthew Giandalia, a BellmoreMerrick CHSD student at Nassau BOCES Willet Avenue Middle School, has worked hard to express his feelings, to cope more effectively with anxiety, and to think through how best to manage situations and resolve problems. He has become more expressive and assertive, and seeks help when he needs it. As a result, he is currently at the highest level in the school-wide behavior management program, earning “Golden Eagle” status. Matthew is the author of the e-book, A Kid’s Guide to Expanding Thoughts and Experiences, which has earned a five-star rating on Amazon. One reviewer stated, “The author really stands out as being more mature and

insightful than the average teenager.” Matthew also has numerous responsibilities in his job in the school café, where he fills food orders, makes deliveries, manages money, takes inventory and assists with daily cleanup.

“Matthew is hard-working and always tries his best,” wrote award nominators, School Counselor Pam Power and Teacher Kim Randazzo. “He demonstrates maturity in the way he works through difficulties. Matthew has a

strong sense of right and wrong, and is reflective about how his behavior affects others. He is sensitive to others needs, encouraging and thoughtful, and is a wonderful role model for his peers.” Outstanding students have been earning this prestigious award since 2007. It currently stands as a memorial to former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students at Nassau BOCES was only surpassed by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009. “The students we honor today were chosen by their teachers, mentors and administrators for their remarkable achievements,” Susan Bergtraum, Vice President of the Nassau BOCES Board, said at the awards ceremony. “They have demonstrated passion, drive, outstanding talents, exemplary character, and a commitment to community and school improvement.”

Now in its eighth year, the Business Plan Competition, JANY’s flagship, youth, entrepreneurship education program, provides New York City and Long Island students the opportunity to pitch ideas for new business ventures in an exciting competition format. Prominent members of the New York City and Long Island business communities serve as judges. This year, students will conceive, research, develop and competitively pitch ideas for products or services which can transform the travel and tourism industry.
