irst-graders at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore celebrated the colorful Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo from May 4th through May 6th. In preparation for the event, the students constructed and painted serapes, a Latin American shawl, out of paper bags. Rotating through four stations, the students honed their Spanish-speaking skills while playing bingo and singing various songs. A great time was had by all.

Ms. Sadowski has been a true friend of SBPLI, not only by providing pro bono legal services and financial assistance to the organization, but also by volunteering her time to support its programs. This year marks her 14th year as a judge for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC). She also insists on leading the Chairman’s Award Committee each year as she sees it as a privilege to communicate with students, many of whom ultimately decide to enter STEM-related majors in college, and have the opportunity to see how they been impacted by the Robotics program. Generous Grant Awarded Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. was recently awarded a $10,000 Veterinary Assistance Grant from Banfield Foundation®. This grant will assist owners undergoing economic hardships keep their pets healthy and offset costs in emergency medical situations so they will not be forced to surrender or euthanize

their beloved dogs and cats. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization striving to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. The all– volunteer, non-profit group cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2015, Last

Hope placed 620 cats and 245 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The Banfield Foundation® grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid; and, hopefully, prevent people from making the heartbreaking decision to give

up their pets, or worse, be forced to euthanize fourlegged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-AFeral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission, whereas assisting individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently.

“The generous Banfield Foundation® grant will enable us to expand our reach. Most of the donation money we work so hard to raise must be spent on the animals in our care. In the past we’ve been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets. Because of the Banfield Foundation®, Last Hope responded in two

The honorees had also demonstrated outstanding citizenship by promoting kindness, sensitivity and acceptance of one another. In addition, more than 300 students were honored for their outstanding achievements in music and art. As they were announced, they were applauded by family, friends, administrators, teachers and community members for their creativity, talent and diligence. Music highlights included: Eleven students were selected as AllState musicians for the New York State School Music Association Winter Conference in Rochester, New York. Twelve students were named alternates. - Twenty-five students were selected to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association festivals. - A total of 178 students performed in the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County

Festival at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. - One student was selected to perform in the National Association for Music Education AllNational Orchestra in Nashville, Tennessee, and perform in the United States Army All-American Marching Band in San Antonio, Texas. - One student was selected to perform in the American Choral Directors Association Honors Choir at the Eastern Division Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. Hundreds of elementary and secondary students were honored for their excellence in music, art and humanitarianism during the East Meadow School District’s annual Music and Art Awards ceremony. Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo opened the ceremony by highlighting the exceptional students for their many accomplishments over the course of the year and thanking the talented teachers, administrators and community members for their continued support of the district’s fine arts program. “We have a great opportunity to make this world a better place, and those of you gathered here tonight are a major example of that,” Mr. Campo said. “As long as we work together in partnership for the benefit of our children and our children continue to work hard, this is going to be a much better world.” Following his welcoming remarks, students from each of the district’s nine schools were recognized

Kindergartners at Birch School in the Merrick Union Free School District received a standing ovation for three performances, all directed by Lesley Wade with the help of musical director, Robert Normandeau. In the comedy “The King’s Lost Crown,” Mrs. Vernet and Mrs. Mastellon’s class presented the story about a forgetful king who searches through his palace to find his crown. The king, nervous and occupied because he wishes to not upset the

queen, refuses to listen to his courtiers explain that the crown has been on his head the whole time. Dressed in mice ears, whiskers and bowties, the classes of Mrs. Kvint, Mrs. D’Alessandro, Mrs. Mayo and Mrs. Elefante performed “Who Will Bell the Cat?” The tale follows a group of mice who protect themselves from a troubling cat. The mice devise a plan to tie a bell around the cat’s neck to notify them when the cat is around. The issue is, who is brave enough to bell the

cat? “Room on the Broom,” presented by Mrs. Hardecker’s class, shared the story of three helpful animals – a dog, a parrot and a frog – accompanying a kindhearted witch on her travels by broomstick after finding her hat, hair ribbon and wand. When threatened by a hungry dragon, the animals form a “Brementown Musicians” chimera to ward off the dragon. In return for their heroic duty, the witch conjures a cozier vehicle for her loyal friends.

Career Milestone The Wantagh Board of Education and central administration announced the tenure of 10 administrators and teachers during a reception with colleagues and family during a reception marking the most important milestone of their educational careers. First-graders at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore celebrated the colorful Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo on May 4th-6th. In preparation for the event, the students constructed and painted serapes, a Latin American

shawl, out of paper bags. Rotating through four stations, the students honed their Spanishspeaking skills while playing bingo and singing various songs, created Mexican flags, read about what it’s like to attend school in Mexico City and enjoyed chips and salsa.

Foreign language teacher Lisa Goldberg organized the annual event and explained that the Cinco de Mayo fiesta was not only a way to strengthen the students’ knowledge of the Spanish language, but to also celebrate this vibrant culture.

Active & Engaged One of the only Boy Scout Councils in the country to host a S.T.E.M. Center, The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Theodore Roosevelt Council recently held a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Camp over school spring break, ushering in a new era of scouting at its recently opened S.T.E.M. Center in Massapequa that kept scouts’ minds productive, engaged and active while school was out on spring recess. “On the national level, the S.T.E.M. program has become a priority of the Boy Scouts,” says Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council S.T.E.M. Center & Workshop Director Dakota Oher. “As a result,

at the local Council level, we’ve fully embraced the program and are already seeing exceptional results and advancement opportunities, community relations and career development.” “During spring break it is important for youth to keep their minds active and engaged,” adds Theodore Roosevelt Council Executive Jay Garee. “Our S.T.E.M. Camp programs and activities offer scouts a fun and unique way to interact with one another while learning important fundamentals about science, technology, engineering and math in everyday applications during spring recess.” As part of the camp’s S.T.E.M. related programs and activities, the scouts

built their own interactive robots before bringing them to life, giving their robots the ability to pick up and launch balls, trail paths and follow instructions. Scouts also conducted various experiments and learned about science through numerous displays that not only included robotics, but also chemistry, aviation and flying machines as well as catapult constructions and theme park engineering. The Theodore Roosevelt Council’s S.T.E.M. Camp is a follow up to the grand opening of the Council’s S.T.E.M. Center that was celebrated earlier this year with hundreds of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and others along with Congressman Peter King.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District teacher Sarah Norton has been selected as the recipient of the Promising New Professional Award from the Long Island Family and Consumer Science Educators. This award is given to a teacher with less than eight years of experience, recognizing excellence in the classroom. Norton teaches family and consumer science at Merrick Avenue Middle School and Kennedy High School, focusing on child and human development, food and nutrition, and gourmet foods. In addition, she works with the students in the schoolbased BOCES program

teaching life skills. During the May 4th Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District board meeting, Norton was recognized for her achievement. “Norton is passionate and enthusiastic about her subject area,” said Board Vice President Janet Goller. “She is constantly developing creative lessons and activities that have real life application.” This includes bringing her students to the Charles A. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.

Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now

showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Smart Buddies Congratulations to team Smart Buddy from W. T. Clarke High School, which won the school-level round of the Junior Achievement Business Plan Competition. Following their triumph over three other Clarke finalists, Smart Buddy will now advance to the regional finals at Baruch College in New York City on May 20th. Three business executives from FedEx Express, Chase Bank and National Grid adjudicated the school competition, in which student teams were assigned the task of writing a business plan, then pitching their idea

to the three judges. Smart Buddy won for their idea of a child-friendly iPad case. The team is comprised of students Jamie Gaeta, Matthew Gutierrez, Caterina Lamberti and Marissa LoVerde. In qualifying for the Baruch competition, Smart Buddy will have the opportunity to advance to the Junior Achievement Business Plan Finals, to be hosted by the major private equity group Kohlberg Kravis and Roberts & Co. in Manhattan on May 26th. The winning team receives prizes, including a cash award of $12,000. In the last eight years,

Clarke High School teams have won the overall competition five times and have placed in the top three seven times during that span. “I really feel that wherever these students place, this experience will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” said Clarke business teacher and competition adviser Joe Pavia. “I have had former students from nine years ago come back to tell me how much this has helped shape their careers. Win, lose or draw, this is one of those projects that will have a long-lasting effect on them as individuals.”

Division Students Honored During its annual awards presentation on May 8th, the Jewish War Veterans East Meadow-Levittown Post 709 recognized Division Avenue High School seniors Jean Mahn and Michael Mahoney with two prestigious awards. Senior Jean Mahn was honored with the Bernard and Lillian Hein Brotherhood Award for her academic and artistic achievements, in particular her award-winning sculpture, “Wave of Peace.” The sculpture was inspired by a young Japanese girl

who suffered through the bombing of Hiroshima and has won three awards at the 2015 Heckscher Museum’s Long Island’s Best Artists Exhibit. It’s accompanying essay garnered a firstplace prize at the Stony Brook Japanese Center’s annual cultural contest. Jean has also been invited to lunch with the Japanese ambassador to the United States for her thoughtful and compassionate response to the story of Sadako Sasaki. Senior Michael Mahoney received the Bernard and

Lillian Hein Award for Outstanding Effort and Contributions to Music. He is a percussionist in the symphonic and jazz bands and has been a New York State School Music Association drum and vocal soloist all four years of high school. Michael is the drum major of the school’s marching band, which placed second in this year’s New York State competition. He is also a polished vocalist who sings at school functions and with the St. Bernard’s Youth Choir.
