Community Golf Outing In an effort to support students at Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools, the Lee Road PTA will host its fundraising event, the Roadrunner Open on Monday, June 25th at Pine Ridge Golf Club in Coram, New York. Registration begins at 11 a.m., the tournament starts at 12
p.m. and dinner is served at 5 p.m. The event is open to all golfers and non-golfers, Lee Road families and all families throughout the community. The goal of the golf outing is to raise money to provide students with cultural arts programs, focusing on art, science, technology, history,

literature, health, safety and anti-bullying. Golfing will consist of a scramble format, an informal way to play that recognizes the best shot, with driving range and carts included. In addition, the event will feature course contests and raffles, and a silent sports memorabilia auction, sponsored by Triple Crown.

The Levittown Public Schools was recently recognized as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. This is the fifth consecutive year that the district earned this prestigious honor. The district is among 583 school districts nationwide to receive the distinction

benches, and the entire area was heavily landscaped with bushes and trees. My favorite routine (after a day at the office) was to have dinner, then quickly retreat into this garden. It took only a few moments before one relaxed and felt very much at ease. The Episode: Several weeks prior to this visit, I had become fascinated with the idea of engaging in the “thunder of one hand clapping,” and constantly thought of it during meditation. Nothing much happened until my first night in the hotel garden, which I believed was the perfect setting to attempt it. Try as I might, for the third night in a row, but nothing happened. On the fourth day, I felt strangely different and could not wait to enter my “private garden” that night. I once again began the process and, after a while, felt a strange tingling in my left arm. I continued meditating; my whole body began to feel very warm. I’m not sure of the exact sequence, but I remember raising my right arm and placing it in front of my chest. The next thing that happened is
difficult to explain, except I heard a very loud rumbling sound in the garden, followed by complete silence. I looked up to see that the sky was completely clear. How could that be? I felt exhausted, but soon noticed that I was drenched in sweat; both palms of my hands were hot, and a deep red color. Truly, I had to remain seated on the bench for a moment before I had the strength to get up. After that, I went directly to my room and had one of the best night’s sleep I had ever experienced. Aftermath: I can’t explain what happened that night. Was it my subconscious turning thoughts into action? Was it all my imagination? If so, why the tingling and strange feelings beforehand, and the deep red color of both palms afterward? {By the way, I have never tried this again.} A final thought... Before forming an opinion, just think of all the mysteries in this world that we know exist, yet cannot explain. Could this be one of them? You be the judge. Peace.

The Thunder of One Hand Clapping This column completes a trilogy, the first being The Art and Pleasure of Meditation, followed by The Power of Zen. What you are about to read is a rare glimpse into a segment of advanced Zen dynamics. For many years, I’ve heard from Zen Masters on this subject; many Zen followers try to obtain it, with varying degrees of success. I am certain that, after digesting this story, some readers may be dubious and doubt the validity of the episode. I don’t blame them. How can you possibly hear any sort of noise (much less thunder) using only one hand? One thing is certain. The story you are about to read is true. How do I know? Because I was the one it happened to. Background: I was in London on an extended two-week business trip. As a frequent visitor to the city, I always preferred to stay in a small English hotel, charming and secluded, with a warm, laid-back atmosphere. Of particular interest to me was their private garden in the rear of the hotel. Immediately upon entering, you felt very comfortable. It had two small

PCLI Special Honorees press club is induction to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees are Harvey Aronson, Brian Donovan and Carol Pack. Aronson was a writer, editor and writing coach at Newsday for more than 40 years. Today he is a lecturer at Stony Brook University. Donovan was a longtime investigative reporter at Newsday who has won numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Pack is being inducted into the PCLI Contributor’s Wing of the Hall for her work with PCLI and the Society of Professional Journalists. She is a former PCLI president. The PCLI board chose Newsday for the largemarket Robert W. Greene Public Service Award for an unprecedented database investigation led by reporter Matt Clark, who analyzed more than
60 million rows of data, including 2.5 million tax bills, to reveal deep and discriminatory flaws in the dramatic overhaul of Nassau County’s tax assessment system. This year marks the debut of a small-market Robert W. Greene Public Service Award. The Long Beach Herald was selected for its multi-part series chronicling the city five years after Superstorm Sandy. The Independent/East Hampton Media Group was named best community weekly newspaper by the PCLI board, while Port Washington Magazine was selected as best magazine. In celebration of Earth Day, Wantagh fourthgrade students from Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary schools joined the Town of Hempstead Department of Conservation and Waterways and the Community Oyster Reef Restoration Effort to build an oyster reef. The local waterways and the Great South Bay are experiencing elevated nitrogen levels due to runoff, making the water harmful to local marine life. Being natural filter
feeders, one oyster can filter 50 gallons of water each day, removing harmful materials and providing a healthy habitat for various marine organisms. Conservation biologist and Town of Hempstead Shellfish Program Director Stephen Naham was on hand at Mandalay Elementary School, which is positioned parallel to a tidal creek, to assist the students in shoveling old clamshells into mesh bags that form the base of the reef. CORE will help oysters reproduce and
grow on top of the bagged layer of shells, and fifthgraders will monitor the oyster reef and report data to the town during the 2018-2019 school year. During the event, the students also learned to test the salinity, pH balance and turbidity of the creek water. They also measured oysters, learned about how to recycle, cleaned up trash that accumulated during the winter on the edge of the creek and observed several other marine organisms.

Post Established Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and the Town Board are lauding the Town of Hempstead Civil Service Commission for their unanimous creation of the position of Town Compliance Officer. Councilwoman King Sweeney proposed the legislation for an oversight position as part of the Town’s ethics reform initiative last year and the legislation was passed by the Town Board in December, 2017. “I commend the Commission for taking these positive, goodgovernment steps to ensure ethics reform and transparency in the Town of Hempstead,” said King Sweeney. “This initiative is a step in the right direction toward ensuring
transparency, openness and a strong vetting process for the review of town contracts and agreements.” The new Compliance Officer will review all town contracts, and procurements for the purpose of identifying and preventing conflicts of interest, work and/or corruption involving contracts and procurements. This position will provide greater oversight over compliance with procurement guidelines and legal requirements. “I look forward to the Commission beginning the process of screening qualified candidates for this important position,” stated Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby. Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. On April 30th, the Meadowbrook Alternative Program’s School and Community Leadership class in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District delivered their cyberbullying presentation to the fifthand sixth-grade classes of the Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. “This partnership was forged earlier in the school year when the students at Newbridge Road and the leadership class at MAP both read the children’s
novel “Wonder” and went to see the film back in November,” said Zachary Gosse, a special education teacher. “The main character in the book experiences bullying in his new school, which inspired the leadership students to identify tools to help combat cyberbullying in school buildings.” MAP students identified a free software app (ReThink) that is easily downloaded to any phone, tablet or device, which effectively stops cyberbullying before the damage is done. “The presentation
provided a venue for the leadership students to discuss the negative impact cyberbullying has on learning environments and how ReThink helps give users an opportunity to pause and re-evaluate a hurtful message or post before it is sent,” Gosse added. The leadership class also displayed their student made infomercial highlighting ReThink and how it can benefit adolescents who use their cellphones on a regular basis.

Anyone for Dessert? I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged
and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate
aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

was an opportune time for students to strengthen their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. During the festivities, the students painted and constructed serapes, a Latin American shawl, out of paper bags. Rotating
through stations, the students sang Spanish songs, played Bingo in Spanish, created Mexican flags and read about a boy’s typical day in a Mexican school. The celebration commenced with a snack of chips and salsa.

A Career Milestone The Wantagh Board of Education and central administration announced the tenure of five teachers during a May 3 reception with colleagues and family, marking the most important milestone of their educational careers. Scientists Selected Two students from Grand Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District were selected to participate in the New York State Science Congress competition. Tyler Bissoondial and Timothy Langone will travel to SUNY Buffalo on June 2nd to present their
research. Bissoondial’s project is “MicroRNA-156 regulates gametophyte to sporophyte development and sensitivity to salinity in Ceratopteris richardii.” Langone’s project is “Can seed germination release inhibitory signals prevent the development of seeds
in close proximity?” Both projects were completed under the guidance of their research teacher, Tami Cruz. In order to be selected to compete at the state competition, students must be within the top 1 percent of their category at the regional Long Island Science Congress.

Eagle Scout Honored During the May 2nd public meeting of the Levittown Board of Education, the district’s trustees recognized Division Avenue High School senior Jonathan Swift, who recently acquired the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 330. To receive this status, Jonathan renovated the cafeteria at St. Bernard’s
Center for Religious Education in Levittown by collecting donations from local establishments, retailers and private donors. He also enlisted the assistance of his troop, friends and family to clean the kitchen, spackle and paint the walls and clean the stainless steel appliances. Following the renovation, Jonathan and Troop 330 prepared a meal
for St. Raymond’s Church and staff members. In reflecting upon his Eagle Scout project, Jonathan said, “I understand the importance of giving back to the community and always helping others in need, all thanks to lessons taught to me while striving to become an Eagle Scout.”
Getting in Tune
Hundreds of students and their family members gathered at General Douglas MacArthur High School as the Levittown Public Schools hosted their annual “District Instrumental Music Night” on April 30th. Students in grades 2-4 and their family members listened to performances from the high school orchestra, led by Iris Winter, and the band, led by Joseph Romano. Curriculum Associate for Music Vincent D’Ulisse, introduced and discussed the district’s music program while answering any questions
that attendees had. Students and family members had the opportunity to walk around the gymnasium where they received a closer look at the instruments offered in the Levittown Schools music program. Music faculty including Winter, Jill Castillo, Janet Giordano and Matthew Nobile discussed, facilitated and demonstrated instruments with the high school students. Elementary school students in grades 3-5 are eligible to participate in the district’s instrumental music program for
band and orchestra. The students receive one lesson per week in school and, when proficient enough, may participate in a performance ensemble. That evening, many family members registered their children for the 2018-2019 instrumental program. Registration will continue at all the elementary schools through the month of May. Teachers will distribute the forms. The Levittown Public Schools are proud to offer this highly rewarding opportunity to study a musical instrument.

She was accompanied by Kiki and standout eighthgrader Alyssa Crews as the girls finished the race taking first, third and fourth places. Lisa made up the stagger on her competitors within the first 50 meters and didn’t look back. “Special would be an understatement, Lisa is one of the quickest athletes I have ever coached,” he said. “She has a stride and turnover that many girls can only dream to have. I can’t wait to see how far track and field will
take her.” The 800m was a key race for the Colts and they knew that this could make or break the meet. Julianna Razza and Katie Corona took the race out at a fast pace setting them up in a great position for the last 200m. The girls both ran personal bests and took second and third place gaining massive points on Manhasset. “Julianna is only an eighth-grader and she was asked to perform as an upperclassman,” Migliano said. “She has gotten faster every time we run and truly is starting to love the sport of track and field. She has stepped up in big spots all year and today was no different.” Katelyn Goodman knew she would have to step up in the absence of her best friend and jumping partner, Paige
Sfiroudis; and step up she did. Katie won the pole vault and took second in Long and Triple Jump. “Katie is one of the hardest workers on the team gives all she has day in and out,” he said. “She is a real leader and many of our young athletes look up to her.” The throwing events sometimes get overshadowed by the track events, but Calhoun knows its importance. Madison Padro and Jamie Campanelli would lead the shot putters to a 1, 2, 3 finish picking up 13 big points. Victoria Unz would upset three girls to win the discus with a personal best throw of 92 feet. “These girls are crucial to the team’s success,” Migliano said. “They never get enough credit, but meet in and out we can always count of them to do their job and they have all year long.” Entering the relays at the end of the meet Calhoun knew they needed a solid showing to hold off Manhasset. Alyssa Crews led off the 4x400m race running a personal best of 63.5. She handed off to freshman Nicole Devlin who ran a personal best as well. The girls took second place and made sure Manhasset didn’t pick up too many points. “Alyssa is an eighth-grader and Nicole a freshman,” Migliano said. “They are tough, fast and competitors. Never backing down from older girls who are in their race. When these girls get a full year on training under their belt, Nassau watch out.” Tuzzolo would come back with Corona, Razza and Samantha Latorre to win the 4x800m relay. This was the girls’ second and third race of the day. Feeling tired, run down and weak the girls all stepped up and took first place, ensuring the overall win for the Colts. “We are young, driven and talented. Over 80 percent of our roster is made up of underclassman, and this group girls really work,” Migliano said. “They want to get better every time they step on the track; whether it be practice or a meet. They only know how to work hard and always strive for excellence. As a coach, that’s all you can ever ask for. The girls track and field team from Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District would have a large task on their hands this season; as defending champs they would get every teams best shot each week in and out. Despite graduating an All-State athlete and having their leader and captain Paige Sfiroudis sidelined with an injury the young colts would rise to the occasion and capture their second consecutive conference title. Elizabeth Tuzzolo and Maura Walters got the meet going as they took second and third place in the 400m hurdles, with Maura running a three-second personal record. “Maura has been a real find this season. She is a hard worker and willing to try anything we throw at her,” explained coach Joseph Migliano. Kristina Losquadro and Lisa Jose kept the points going in the 100m dash, as they placed in first and second. Losquadro broke the school record in the 100m running 12.5. “Kiki, as the team calls her, is really something else, Migliano said. “She was on the team as an eighth-grader and now is really starting to stand out as a freshman. Kiki gets faster every time we put her on the track and with her work ethic there’s no telling how far she will go.” Tuzzolo ran a personal best in the 400m dash running a 61.2 and won second place. “Liz has been a true competitor and leader all season,” Migliano said. “We ask so much of her every week and she never disappoints. Only a sophomore, she’s one of the fastest 400m girls in all of Nassau. She was the MVP of the meet for us, leading the way for our middle distance races.” Faith Dwyer would run the 3000m race where she won third place and upset many girls who came into the meet seeded above her. Faith is only a freshman and she has taken over one minute off her 3K time running a 11:32. “Faith is part of a youth movement we have going on over here at Calhoun,” Migliano said. “The girls all over the team are young and overly dedicated; I find myself

Embracing History Four students from Wisdom Lane Middle School’s National History Day Club recently participated in Long Island History Day at Hofstra University, an academic contest for students in grades 6-12 to present their research on a historical topic. Wisdom Lane seventh-graders Adriana Barkey, Nabiha Khan, Avisa Tonekaboni and eighthgrader Jack Thearle were interviewed about their projects during the event which corresponded with the 2018 contest theme “Conflict and Compromise
in History.” With the guidance of teacher Alexander Eichhorn, Barkey and Khan created a documentary titled “My Constitutional Right: The Story of Claudette Colvin,” which focused on civil rights activist Claudette Colvin who refused to give up her seat on a bus nine months before Rosa Parks. Tonekaboni wrote a research paper titled “You Have the Right to Remain Silent: The Journey of Ernesto Miranda” about the Miranda v. Arizona Supreme Court decision,
while Thearle wrote a research paper titled “A Glimpse of Hope for Peace” about the Christmas Day Truce of 1914 during World War I between British, French, and German soldiers. Although the students did not advance to the next level of competition, the district is extremely proud of all the participants for their hard work. The students will continue to share their research as they plan on submitting their projects to the New York State Archives Student Research Award Contest.

Scoring Second Place Science Research students at Division Avenue High School recently earned second place in Nassau County at the annual Long Island Regional Envirothon competition at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The high school competition was coordinated by the Nassau and Suffolk County Soil & Water
Conservation Districts, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture - Natural Resources Conservation Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. With the help of adviser Gerard Marzigliano, the students worked as a team to answer questions on environmental issues
regarding forestry, aquatics, soils, wildlife and current issues. In addition, students created a presentation on environmental concerns regarding the Western Rangeland Management. “I loved working with a team to complete tasks in the environment that we don’t get a chance to do in a classroom setting,” said sophomore Leah Draluck.

Math Students Excel Five students in MacArthur High School’s math fair club recently participated in the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair where three were awarded top spots for their outstanding projects in the final round at Hofstra University. Junior Saajid Chowdhury received a gold medal for his project “Evenly Spreading n Points Within a Unit Square,” followed by sophomore Jin
Guo “Raymond” Yuan Li who was awarded a silver medal for his project “The Evolution and Versatility of Pi” and sophomore Jing Yang “Hailey” Yuan Li who earned a bronze medal for her project “The Fibonacci Sequence: Connections Within the Mathematics and Natures.” The student’s voluntary entered the Math Fair by selecting and researching a topic and then establishing
their presentation materials on their own under the guidance of teachers Marie Fischer and Jessica Horan. Other participants included MacArthur High School students Colin Wu and Nicholas Portello. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of all of the Math Fair participants and especially proud of our three medal winners,” said Fischer.

The National Association for Music Education designated the month of March as Music in Our Schools Month, a time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. The celebration continues to grow each year, reaching more and more students, teachers, musicians and music supporters. Schools and communities throughout the country and overseas celebrate the month with concerts and other activities in their school districts. As part of this celebration, music students at W.T. Clarke Middle School took part in the Music in Our Schools Month PracticeA-Thon. Students who participated in the event documented their daily practice throughout the month. students practiced, and all proceeds were donated to a local charity. “The Practice-A-Thon is a wonderful way to strengthen students’ practice habits while encouraging empathy and charity,” said W.T. Clarke Chairperson of Music Kelly Gelfer. “And it’s a wonderful opportunity for them to make a personal contribution that makes a difference in their community. As Helen Keller said, ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.’” In addition to daily practice, W.T. Clarke music students have also been sharing their music throughout the hallways and the school with weekly performances, tutoring sessions and rehearsals. The results: W.T. Clarke Middle School ensembles raised $815.75 through the

Bird Sleuths Dr. Gargan’s students made two trips to nearby Cammanns Pond to analyze bird habitats, search for bird evidence and to identify birds based on their shape, color, size and patterns. While on the pond they used their tablets to photograph birds in their natural habitat and recorded information on the fly. Kennedy Kids Clinic followup research, students recorded their findings using the SeeSaw app and sent their data to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at Cornell University. Under the direction of the Citizen Science Association, the Citizen Science program engages members of communities to collaborate with professional scientists to conduct investigations, engage in monitoring activities, collect data, interpret results and produce new knowledge used for basic research.
On May 5th, the John F. Kennedy High School baseball teams in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District hosted a clinic for second- through fifthgrade students at the high school’s baseball field. “This was the first time a youth clinic was run by
the baseball team, and the youngsters were taken through all aspects of the game, including hitting, throwing, fielding and base running,” said coach James Bailin. With the help of several varsity and junior varsity players, every student who attended received personal
attention and skill practice. “We hope to team up with the community in the future to further enhance the skills of the youth ballplayers in the BellmoreMerrick schools,” said Eric Caballero, director of physical education, athletics, driver education and health.

to students at various schools, as well as residents of nursing homes and weary travelers at airports. Before allowing students to interact with the dogs, each owner discussed the rules for safely engaging the dogs. Students then all had an opportunity to read some of their favorite books and stories to the dogs. Many students tried to make these friendly canines feel right at home by choosing nonfiction books about dogs, or fiction books that have dogs as a main character! Students also enjoyed having a chance to pet and take photos with both dogs. Various studies show that
children who read to dogs make tremendous strides in their reading comprehension and communication skills once they begin the practice. There are also emotional benefits, including freedom from judgment should a child err in their reading and an overall comforting feeling in the presence of dogs.
