Students awarded in Spark! Challenge Team of students from Levittown’s MacArthur High School and Division Avenue High School recently participated in the 2019 Northwell Health Spark! Challenge, where both schools were honored for their outstanding posters highlighting one of the many careers an individual can have in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related healthcare fields. MacArthur’s science research and graphic design students, under the guidance of teachers Dr. David Friedman, Deja Gomes-Vance and Matthew Zausin, partnered for the challenge. The group was recognized as the second place poster

winner in the competition, out of approximately 50 schools, for their poster on cyber security engineering. The students were presented with $1,500 during 5th annual Spark! Challenge Awards Ceremony. Division Avenue High School students also attended the ceremony with teacher Mark Engels and Assistant Principal Jaclyn Guidice. The students proudly earned the Poster Rookie Award and $1,000 for their poster on the role of an Assistant General Counsel. The students used their Photoshop skills to bring their creation to life. The Spark! Challenge is designed each year to ignite student

interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics healthcare careers. Earlier in the year, both teams participated in different on-site experiences to observe a Northwell Health career. Students were then asked to create a career advertisement for one of the careers that they observed during their visit to Northwell Health. They connected their career advertisement to Northwell Health’s Culture of C.A.R.E. (Connectedness, Awareness, Respect, and Empathy) patient promises and each team conducted a two-minute presentation for Northwell’s senior executives during the ceremony which related to their project.

Students Learn Money Management Fourth graders from Gardiners Avenue and Northside elementary schools in the Levittown Public Schools recently participated in the financial literacy program, Money and Me. The program is run by students from Hofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business and the School of Education. Partnering with Capital One Bank, the college students educate elementary students on how to be financially responsible individuals. Assistant Principal Dyanne Case from Gardiners Avenue and Northside elementary schools, brought the program to both buildings due to its interactive curriculum

which incorporates mathematics and English Language Arts concepts, as well as practical applications, in every lesson. Fifth graders from both buildings attend a trip to Commerce Plaza so it was important to have the fourth graders be exposed to money management as well. The Hofstra University students visited each school for several weeks to facilitate about 12 lessons with the fourth grade classes. The students were educated on important topics such as wants vs. needs, savings accounts, sources of income and expenses, budgets, checking accounts, credit and debit cards, inflation and investments. Each

class was also a given virtual savings account and earned play money throughout the program for participating and asking questions during lessons. Classes could withdraw the virtual money from their savings account to purchase program rewards. On the last day of the program, the students took a quiz to see how much they learned and each student received a drawstring backpack for their participation. “It was fun,” said Gardiners Avenue fourth grader Angel Marroquin. “I learned what it means to be financially literate and the difference between a debit and a credit card.”

Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time. How do they manage? It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer.

Long-distance caregivers provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and out-of-pocket expenses. The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month

arranging care services and half said they spend another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medications-for an average of 22 hours per month. Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed, they often

have to make significant adjustments to their work schedules to allow for their caregiving responsibilities. Twenty-five percent of the surveyed long-distance caregivers had shortened their workday while they were caregiving and 36 percent reported missing full days of work. Twelve percent had taken a leave of absence. The forces that have created today’s longdistance caregiver realities, including an aging population, families separated by distance,

more women entering the workforce, and global competitiveness among companies, are unlikely to reverse themselves in the near future. Rather, the challenges and workbalance issues are likely to accelerate. Clearly, longdistance caregiving already impacts retention and productivity. What can an employer do? Certainly, sensitizing line managers to the issue is a reasonable starting point. Adjusting policies to allow job sharing and short-time relief, as well

And, since long-distance caregivers have financial burdens as well as time conflicts, programs that offer help with these are beneficial. Bellmore Students Celebrate Mexican Culture The hallways at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center resonated with the sounds of Mexican music as students celebrated Cinco de Mayo with various activities. Foreign language teacher Lisa Goldberg explained that this festive annual celebration is an opportunity for students

to strengthen their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. Out of paper bags, the students painted and constructed serapes, a Latin American shawl. Rotating through sections, the students sang Spanish songs, played Bingo in Spanish, created Mexican flags and read about a boy’s

typical day in a Mexican school and village. One English language arts activity included the making of a Venn diagram in which the students compared the boy’s school day to a day of school in Bellmore. The celebration was complete with a delicious snack of chips and salsa for all to enjoy. CELEBRATE MEXICAN CULTURE - Charles A.
