The Seton Hill team from Greensburg, PA. recently lost pregnant coach Kristina Quigly, who died in a bus accident on the way to a game against Millersville University. During this dedication game, the teams wore their bright school colors in respect to the college team’s loss.

Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the
BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse
than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

while Daniel Russo and Ryan Thompson received third-place medals in Mystery Architecture. Prior to the state competition, the Science Olympiad team earned 11 medals in eight out of 20 events during the regional competition, and the two teams finished sixth and seventh overall. The seventh-grade team took home second-place medals in the Endangered Species and Mystery Architecture events, third place in Mission Impossible and Mousetrap Vehicle, fourth place in Experimental Design and sixth place in Rotor Egg Drop. In addition, the eighth-grade team secured a first-place medal in Mousetrap Vehicle. The eighth graders also won second place in Helicopters, Sound of Music and Mission Impossible and sixth place in Forestry. The district congratulates all of the team members on their excellent performance and accomplishments during the regional and state competitions.

and, in Bellmore, the St. Marks Avenue School opened its doors. To commemorate its 50-year birthday, the school held a celebration of education in the auditorium. As the students were led into the auditorium, they were able to view a table of artifacts from the 1960s as well
as photos of the original building and its students. “Fifty years ago from today was the first time this building became a school,” said Principal Clifford Molinelli, who served as master of ceremonies. “Originally, the students were supposed to move into the building in the
game show was played, with student participants guessing the prices of items such as a stamp (five cents), a magazine (35 cents), milk (25 cents) and a brand-new car ($3,000). As a special treat for the current Reinhard students, a memory book was created featuring student favorites, games that were played, fan-favorite sports teams and popular clothing and hairstyles. PENGUIN CELEBRATION - First-grade students at East Broadway Elementary School in the Levittown School District wrapped up their study about penguins by celebrating Black-and-White Day. Teachers and students alike waddled through the hallways to acknowledge the importance of these eccentric creatures. The celebration concluded with the sharing of penguin research reports and the eating of black-andwhite treats.
LISTENING EARS - Susan Pokalsky’s kindergarten class at East Broadway School in the Levittown School District put on their proverbial “listening ears” to learn about the five senses. Using their sense of hearing, the students took a “listening walk” around the school. They discovered that being a good listener and using one’s five senses can help one learn more about the world around them.

This summer, Long Island’s #1 arts school – Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) – invites students to learn from the masters. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 next fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills in a variety of disciplines. Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex that boasts professional dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fullyequipped professional theatre. Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Students can also choose from master classes in clowning and stage combat. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows. The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline. This four-week program begins Monday, July 1st, at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement. Mingling Of Generations Members of the Parkway Elementary School Service Club hosted a gathering with residents of East Meadow’s The Bristal Assisted Living facility. The students and seniors bridged the generation gap while playing games that utilized SMART Board technology.
W.T. Clarke High School students showcased their talents during the school’s annual Multicultural Show for fellow students and members of the community. An interpretation of a popular tune that utilized American Sign Language was included
in the thirteen featured acts. In addition, the show highlighted Latin, Indian and Irish dancing; martial arts; and Latin songs. The Multicultural Club, which hosts the annual show, was established approximately eight years ago in an effort to promote tolerance and acceptance
