Competitors from 13 Nassau and Suffolk high schools gathered at Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead on May 6th to compete for $5,000 in Suffolk County Community College culinary scholarships in the SYSCO Long Island High School Culinary Arts Competition. The student’s displayed their culinary skills in the dishes that were prepared from a mystery basket of ingredients including a bone-in chicken, sweet potatoes, green squash and sundried tomatoes. Competitors were given one-and-a-half hours to complete two identical plates. Danny Insogna from HB Ward High School in Riverhead took first place and the $4,000 SYSCO sponsored scholarship to Suffolk County Community

The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided through generous donors and great programs like A

Night Of Honor Division Avenue High School in Levittown held its first Night of Honor in which 100 students were inducted into the art, business, math and world language honor societies. In her opening remarks, Assistant Principal Linda Dolecek welcomed students and their parents during this special celebration that recognizes the hard work and dedication, as well as the unending determination, displayed by each of the inductees in their respective disciplines.

“At this Night of Honor, it is our honor to honor you,” Principal Joan Lorelli said. Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes presented the inductees with a citation for their accomplishments. He cautioned the students that there would be speed bumps in life, but that they can rely on their parents for help. The advisers and presidents of each of the societies then called the names of the inductees, who then repeated a

pledge, signifying their membership. In addition, Art Honor Society adviser Tim Ryan announced Olivia Kavanaugh as the recipient of the first Art Show Poster Presentation Award. Alfred Esposito and Lyndsey Petrofsky also recited poetry in their chosen foreign languages. Upon completion of the ceremony, the students, parents and staff were invited to attend a reception displaying student artwork.

From a pool of more than 25 highly qualified applicants, the search firm selected and presented five candidates for board consideration. “Dr. McDonald is an outstanding choice,” said Regan. “Her professional qualifications, combined with her prior experience working in our school district, made her the unanimous choice of the board.” “I would like to thank the Board of Education for the confidence they have shown in me,” said Dr. McDonald. “I am looking forward to working with the Board of Education, administrators, staff, parents, students and

On May 7th, the Levittown School District Board of Education unanimously appointed Dr. Tonie McDonald as the district’s next superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2014 through June 30th, 2017. “The Board of Education has taken the responsibility of selecting a new superintendent very seriously,” said Board President Kevin Regan. “After input from all of the district’s stakeholders, and as a result of working with a professional national search firm, we are extremely confident that Dr. McDonald possesses the professionalism, experience, character, communication skills and vision to lead our school district to even greater levels of success.” The district utilized the services of a national leadership search firm, which conducted an online

The event, now in its 12th year, helps cover the cost of medical supplies, equipment and services for children with special health needs. The outing is one of a series of events held annually to support the

agency, which was founded 20 years ago by Bob and Angie Policastro, whose daughter Angela suffered severe brain damage during birth. The outing features putting tee and driving range activities beginning at 9:45 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start and 18 holes of golf on one of Long Island’s most challenging and breathtaking private courses. Golfers are also

treated to breakfast and lunch, with play followed by a cocktail hour and awards dinner. Foursomes are $1,350, while sponsorships start as low as $100. One Of Those Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

Future Adelphi Alum

Last week, Assemblyman Dave McDonough welcomed David Collins, recipient of the New York State Senate Liberty Medal, to the Assembly Chamber. On June 29th, 2013, David, who was then 12, was at a graduation party at a friend’s house swimming in the pool when he noticed another boy lying motionless at the bottom of the deep end. While other children in the pool thought the boy was playing, David immediately swam to the deep end, dove down ten feet to the pool bottom and pulled the boy up to the surface, at which point he was lifeless. Adults

performed CPR on the boy, who was taken to the hospital and released the next day. As a result of his actions, then- Sen. Charles Fuschillo and McDonough presented the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to David. “It was an honor and privilege to welcome David to the Assembly. For the second consecutive year, West Babylon High School junior Alexa Lucchesse was selected to perform with Camp Broadway Kids at Carnegie Hall. As part of the cast, Alexa was one of 60 students featured

at the New York Pops 31st Birthday Gala on April 28th, and had the opportunity to perform alongside Broadway star Andrea Martin to celebrate the hit-making careers of composer, lyricist and arranger Marc Shaiman and director, lyricist and writer Scott Wittman. As a member of the cast, Alexa performed Trey Parker’s and Shaiman’s “Blame Canada,” from the film “South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut,” which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song in 1999.
