SUPER PARTY TIME

n order to make sure everyone feels included at recess, Mandalay Elementary School in Wantagh has dedicated a Buddy Bench on the playground. Spearheaded by the student council and Principal Marie Pisicchio, the program encourages students who feel isolated or left out of the fun during recess to sit on the Buddy Bench. A volunteer “bench scooper” will then approach the student and help them to engage in playground activities.

W.T. Clarke High School students showcased their various talents during the school’s annual Multicultural Show on April 29th. The event, attended by parents, faculty, administrators and

community residents, featured a number of performances, including various cultural dances, Italian, Spanish and French songs and a Japanese martial arts demonstration. The school’s

Multicultural Club hosts the annual show in an effort to promote tolerance and acceptance of diverse cultures. The tradition allows students to celebrate their own cultural heritages as well as those of their peers.

Awarded For Leadership Five MacArthur High School students received Youth Leadership Awards from New York State Sen. Kemp Hannon’s committee. The Youth Leadership Awards honor sophomores and juniors who reside in the Sixth Senatorial District and who have

Buddy Bench approach the student and help them to engage in playground activities. “We want to help everyone feel included on the playground,” Pisicchio told the students. PTA co-president Dorine Stein and her son, Hayden Stein, made the colorful sign on the bright blue bench to make it feel inviting. The bench scoopers, one boy and one girl from each classroom, wear signs that

identify them as caring and compassionate peers that are willing to help others. Bench scooper Michael Matteo said he wanted to volunteer to help others in the school feel more included. Jennifer Dendels, also a bench scooper, wanted to help peers that are lonely. “I hope we don’t have to use the bench often,” she said. “I don’t want anyone to feel lonely.”

Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors

Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of

Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

CREW WINS BIG - Venturing Crew 130 came in 1st Place overall at the 2015 “Scout vs. Wild” Pequott Camporee. The Venturers did everything from a shelter building LET’S PLAY BALL - Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray recently conducted a contest to eating alligator. There was a little Scout vs. Wild trivia and some geocaching meet and greet with the Blue Rocks girls softball team and their coaches at the 2015 too! The crew advisor even had to eat a cricket as part of the Bear Grylls inspired Wantagh Little League Opening Day Parade, held at Beech Street School, located at competition. The teams of students used rubber lily pads to forge their way to the island at the other end of a pond and made their way through moving jump ropes without disrupting the flow of the rope. Using tarps, they worked in two teams to throw a plastic chicken from one tarp to the other. In the Knot, Or Not a Knot game they also had to collectively decide whether a pile of

rope would be knotted if both ends were pulled taut, using their persuasive skills to convince others if the rope was knotted or not. Fifth-grade teacher Lynn Collins explained that with each game the students had to set goals and work as a team. “The students learned some very valuable tools which will assist them throughout their lives,” she said.

Nassau University Medical Center interns visited first- and secondgrade students at Barnum Woods Elementary School on April 29th to host interactive workshops on health, safety and nutrition. The interns, who are studying to become pediatricians, discussed important safety tips

with students on how to protect their bodies. Such tips included wearing a helmet when riding a bike and wearing a seatbelt when in a car. They also spoke about healthy eating habits; emphasizing students should eat more fruits and vegetables and avoid unhealthy foods and beverages such as soda and candy.

To stay healthy, the interns spoke with students about the importance of exercise, whether jogging, running or participating in sports activities with friends. Students enjoyed the interactive workshops and learned a wealth of knowledge about proper health and wellness.

The East Meadow High School Theatre Guild and Music Department recently captivated audiences with performances of the musical production “Beauty and the Beast,” directed by band teacher Christopher Hale. “Beauty and the Beast” tells the tale of a young prince who was cast under a spell, changing him into a hideous beast. Loving

another and earning their love in return is the only way to break this curse. Belle is a beautiful and headstrong young woman who takes the place of her imprisoned father in the Beast’s enchanted castle. During her time with the Beast, she teaches him to be gentle and kind. The two fall in love, breaking the spell and transforming the Beast back into a

prince. The student cast impressed the audience with their exceptional performances, and the student orchestra, conducted by Joel Levy, provided harmonious musical accompaniment. The production was met with rave reviews from students, parents and community members.

Scholarship Winners

More than $14,000 in scholarships and prizes was awarded to 11 MacArthur High School students who attended the sixth annual Long Island Youth Summit at Dowling College on April 17th. In addition, several of the students will receive a paid summer internship at North Shore LIJ. The summit brought together more than 300 students for a day of interactive workshops with experts in the fields of medicine, environment, business and the economy and leadership. In addition to Dowling College, the summit is a partnership of organizations including North Shore LIJ Health System, Vision Long Island and Citizens Campaign for the Environment. Disney Youth Grant Wantagh High School senior Emily Fenter was one of 125 students nationwide who was awarded a Disney Friends for Change Youth Grant through Youth Service America. The grant was awarded to young people to lead projects that make a positive and long-lasting change in the world. Emily said she will use the grant money totaling $350 to host a

blanket-making day to benefit teens undergoing scoliosis surgery at New York University Hospital for Special Surgery.
