Honors, Accolades & Praise The East Meadow Board of Education recognized the accomplishments of students, community and board members, as well as other achievements during their April 21st communication meeting. Woodland Middle School Principal James Lethbridge and W. T. Clarke Middle School Principal Stacy Breslin acknowledged the March and April “Terrific Kids.” The Terrific Kids program is sponsored by the

East Meadow Kiwanis Club to recognize sixth-, seventhand eighth-grade students who constantly improve as individuals, students and members of the community. Initiated by trustee Jeffrey Rosenking, the board established a new tradition to recognize the contributions of community veterans who served our country. During the meeting, the board and central administration honored Michael C. Ambrosio with

the Distinguished Service Award for his service in World War II. Mr. Ambrosio, an East Meadow resident for more than 60 years, served as an Army Air Corps Regimen on B-17 Flight Fortress in the 447th bomb group and was a member of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. Following this prestigious award, Vice President Marcee Rubinstein and trustee Brian O’Flaherty were recognized for their

additional training as board members. The board presented Ms. Rubinstein and Mr. O’Flaherty with the Board of Excellence Award for participation in the New York State School Board Association’s Recognition Program. The East Meadow Supervisory and Administrative Association applauded the board for their continued efforts in service to the district throughout the school

strengthen the partnership with the entire staff to benefit the community. In addition, the East Meadow Custodial and Maintenance Unit thanked the board of education for praising the work of the custodial and maintenance staff. The unit commended the board and acknowledged their dedication and sincere appreciation for the work the custodial and maintenance staff provide.

Undefeated Again Salk Middle School’s wrestling team in Levittown completed their third consecutive undefeated season due to the hard work and dedication of 55 student athletes. This season’s highlight was a showdown between the Salk Seahawks and East Meadow School

District’s Woodland Middle School Jets. A pin by Salk Middle School’s Michael Randazzo, followed with Salk victories by Thomas Szilagyi, Joe Apuzzo, Jason Dinh, Shane Lazina, Jimmy Mahoney and Ryan Bray put Levittown in the lead. Remarkably, Salk also

won every overall matchup against their opponents. In addition, the dominant heavyweights were Dan Calderon, Louis Calone, Jason Razzo, Dylan Young and Joe Esposito. The district congratulates the team on this outstanding season.

Arrive Alive Wellington C. Mepham High School students were driving recklessly in the back parking lot of the school, swerving, almost crashing into parked cars and just missing pedestrians. The simulations were all part of the Arrive Alive Tour to promote awareness about the impacts of impaired and distracted driving. Arrive Alive, a drunk and distracted driving education program and simulator demonstration sponsored by the Community Parent Center, Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and Mepham, is hosted in partnership with State

Farm Insurance and the Allyson Rosenblatt Memorial Fund. Using a high-tech simulator and special goggles, the Arrive Alive program allowed 200 Mepham students to experience first-hand, the dangers of drinking and driving and texting while driving without the deadly consequences in a safe, controlled environment. In addition to the simulator, the New York State Police brought the Seat Belt Convincer to Mepham to demonstrate the importance of always wearing a seat belt. The Seat Belt Convincer is an educational tool that

simulates a low impact vehicle crash. It allowed the students to experience forces, of up to five times their body weight, similar to that of a 5 to 7 mph crash. “When it comes to car safety, wearing a seat belt could be the difference between life or death in a car crash,” said Wendy Tepfer, Executive Director of the Community Parent Center. “Driving impaired or distracted can be deadly. Our goal is to keep our teen drivers safe. If we saved one life as a result of these activities, then we have done our job.”

HIT THE JACKPOT?

On April 21st, all three schools in the Merrick School District participated in a full day of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math experiments. The district’s STEM Day provided students with an opportunity to explore 12 STEM-themed stations where they collaborated, built and investigated with the help of Science Enrichment Program fifth- and sixthgrade students. Students in kindergarten through second grade visited five stations including Structures, Ramp Racing, Mystery Box, Color Paddles and Bridge Design. The “Structures” station challenged students to build the tallest building using recyclable materials. At the “Ramp Race” station, children conducted trials to see which ramp made their racecar travel the farthest. The group used their sense of touch to determine what items were inside each box at the “Mystery Box” station. While at the “Color Paddles” station, students wore “world of one color” glasses to sort through various colors to see how one color filters out the other colors. Lastly, the younger students examined the durability of bridges by testing out various construction paper bridges using the weight of pennies. Third- through sixthgraders explored seven advanced STEM stations including Rocketry, MythBusters, Structures, Forensics/CSI, Hidden Messages, Rube Goldberg and Engineering. At the “Rocketry” station, upperclassmen created paper airplanes and hoop gliders to test the strength, distance and power of their

Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION

The Mandalay Elementary School PTA in Wantagh held its annual Special Events Day on April 22nd. Because this annual event fell on Earth Day, the activities were mostly geared toward celebrating the Earth. In addition to wearing green and blue clothing, the students colored and designed footprints for a school mural and reflected

about how their footprint will leave a mark on Earth. There were also assemblies, including the opportunity for students in grades K-2 to create Earth Day crafts from 100 percent recycled materials. Students in grades 3-5 watched “Our Endangered Earth” and learned solutions to problems for making the Earth a better place to live for the future.

Eric the Reptile Guy also shared his reptiles from around the world, including Fluffy the 10foot snake and Wally the alligator. Each student brought home a Hexbug, a robotics creature, and multiple take-home science experiments to work on over spring break.

Honoring Mother Earth Wantagh Elementary School first-graders, dressed in uniquely decorated Earth Day themed T-shirts, commemorated Earth Day through song, art and writing on April 22nd. Under the direction

of music teacher Beth Marinis, the students sang about protecting the environment and the importance of recycling. Family members were then invited to the classrooms where classes showcased poetry readings, Earth Day

posters and class murals, student reflections and art projects, indicating that the theme “Earth Day Every Day.” They also enjoyed special snacks of fruits, as well as a chocolate pudding “dirt treat” with gummy worms.

Recently, Wantagh’s Troop 96 ventured off to Boston and camped at Camp Sayre, also know as New England Base Camp. They started off with a visit to the Boston Museum of Science. While there, they saw an IMAX movie called National Parks Adventure and saw the various exhibits in the museum. Those exhibits included the Hall of

Human Life, The Theater of Electricity, Frogs: A Chorus of Colors and many others. The next day, they hit the Freedom Trail. They hiked from Boston Commons all the way to the USS Constitution “Old Ironsides.” Along the way, they saw various burial grounds, the site of the Boston Massacre, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere’s

Calhoun High School senior Irene Kowalski traveled to the DECA International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee and took home the secondplace award. Kowalski, who is currently the president of New York State DECA, selected the Start-Up Business Plan Event. The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for the participant to develop and present a proposal to form a business. versed and extremely knowledgeable on her business model and her entrepreneurship skills truly shined,” added Peter Palazzo, a business teacher at Calhoun. Irene is a member of the National Honor Society and enrolled in various advanced placement and college level classes. She has been a member of DECA since freshman year and plans to attend Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan this fall. DECA is unlike any other club offered in high school. It is a nationally recognized business organization that brings the work world into the classroom.

Winning Notes Earning high awards was music to the Sanford H. Calhoun High School Music Department’s ears as they traveled to the Music in the Parks national competition in Williamsburg, Virginia on April 14th. The Calhoun Wind Ensemble placed first with a Superior rating, “garnering the highest score they ever received at the competition,” said

Ed Tumminelli, director of bands. In the show choir category, Crescendo, placed first with an Excellent rating. The Concert Choir placed second with an Excellent rating. Tenor Michael DeVito won the Outstanding Vocal Soloist medal. “All three groups were awarded the coveted Esprit de Corps trophy for the

most professional group at the festival,” said Sanford Sardo, director of choral activities. Before returning to Calhoun, the music department stopped in Washington, D.C., where they toured the city, following which the Concert and Show Choirs gave a 30-minute concert at the United States Navy Memorial Plaza.

Cinco de Mayo Recognized At John F. Kennedy High School, the World Languages department is recognizing Cinco de Mayo in a variety of ways. Melissa Schickler’s Spanish classes collected nonrecyclable wrappers from tortillas, chips and other food products typically consumed for Cinco de Mayo; this

One Voice, One Message Ambassadors from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s “One Voice, One Message,” a districtwide, student-led think tank, stood before the board of education on May 4th, touting the program’s success and accomplishments. “We made a lot of progress in a short time,” said John F. Kennedy High School senior Alex Dobosh. “You had kids going back to their schools and talking about events and initiatives in the hallways to get others excited.” One such event was a districtwide Day of Service, organized in conjunction with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. “This act was an effective way to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Marco Hanna, an eighthgrader at Merrick Avenue Middle School.

Items were collected, sorted, packed and delivered to families in need, a collaborative effort between the district’s staff and 5,600 students. “This process has made me a better leader, listener and helper,” said Liam Orr, a student at Grand Avenue Middle School. Sara Samir, a student from Sandford H. Calhoun High School, praised the success of the recent OVOM 5K Run/Walk, which raised money for an organization that aides in bringing clean drinking water to people in developing countries. “The success truly shows what BMCHSD is capable of achieving,” Samir added. Created in March of 2014, student ambassadors from the district’s four high schools and two middle schools join together throughout the school year to address issues impacting the student body and

surrounding community. “When the middle schools were included, it made us feel like our feelings and voices were being heard,” said Jillian Mayer, a Grand Avenue Middle School student. They work closely with teachers and administrators to achieve ONE VOICE, ONE MESSAGE - Members of the “One Voice, One Message” district goals, thus Committee along with student ambassadors at the May 4th board of education meeting. fostering the “One Voice, Photo courtesy of: Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District One Message” initiative. “We hope this has lasting impacts on these students,” said Superintendent John DeTommaso. “When you have a program like this that is self-generating, it works.” It would seem so, as Tim Tracy of Wellington C.
