sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most
I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn
of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

On Tuesday, June 13th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 29th annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho and the Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke. However, many Americans are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult

Members of Franca Fiorentino’s Spanish 3H class at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District collaborated on a crosscurricular lesson with Michael DiGiovanni, an instructor with
the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Program. Fiorentino’s class worked on a cultural unit that included learning about famous Spanish tapas, small plates of food usually served in Spain. Students visited the culinary arts room to prepare and enjoy
challenging tapas recipes. “It was great to see the students enjoying a meal they prepared,” Fiorentino said. DiGiovanni will be visiting the Spanish class next week to discuss Spanish cuisine with the class.

AMERICANISM AWARD - Venturing Crew 577 was awarded the Americanism award from American Legion Post 1711 in Levittown. This was a surprise, since Crew 577 is chartered in North Bellmore. Thanks to Donna Marie Rich for nominating Crew 577. It is an honor to be awarded the Americanism award, which is awarded for promoting and supporting our veterans, national parks and American.
resulting in constructions that stood over seven feet tall. At another, they were challenged to make patterns, shapes and even their favorite fruits out of Legos. The concept of density was explored at a different station, where the children crafted aluminum foil boats and tested their buoyancy by seeing how many pegs were needed to sink them. Science enrichment students led their younger peers in building balancing structures at the fourth station, where the children were tasked with building the tallest structure they could out of stackable cups and deciding whether a wooden cube or a plastic cup was better suited for its base. At the last station, the students tapped into their creativity by replicating famous bridges out of PlayDoh, toothpicks and craft sticks. Building upon these basic principles, eight stations of more advanced STEAM activities were set up for those in grades 3-6. At one, students created paper rockets and hoop gliders to test their strength, distance and power. The rockets were constructed by covering PVC pipes with paper and taping on triangular shapes as wings, then shooting the aerodynamic creations out of two-liter soda bottles to hit a target. Critical thinking combined with engineering at another station, where students
built newspaper towers as high as five stories that were required to hold the weight of a basketball. Coding was reinforced at a technology station where the third- through sixth-graders used the programming language Scratch to make characters sing, dance or fly. Among other activities, the students tried their hand at origami, deciphered codes created by their peers, built a time-measuring device out of dominoes, constructed chaos towers inspired by whimsical inventor Rube Goldberg, and conducted scientific experiments to prove or bust theories in the style of the popular television show “Mythbusters.” Rounding out the day, students districtwide took part in Makerspace activities in their classrooms. Ingenuity and critical thinking were at the forefront as they engineered pinball machines, boats and insects, solved challenging puzzles using Breakout EDU software, wrote computer code, and created musical instruments such as wind pipes, tambourines, drums and rainsticks out of recyclable materials. The district would like to thank all those who helped organize this successful STEAM Day and ensure the students had an enriching experience.

Students from all three schools in the Merrick School District immersed themselves in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics during the district’s annual STEAM Day on April 21st. Throughout the day, kindergartners through sixth-graders attended STEAM-themed activity stations, where they collaborated on projects, built innovative structures and investigated an array of topics with the help of fifth- and sixth-graders in the district’s Science Enrichment program. “STEAM Day is a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to explore the subjects of [STEAM] in a fun and creative way,” said Dr. Jill Karp, the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction and educational services. “Our fifth- and sixthgrade science enrichment students operate the stations, where they teach younger students and their peers about these areas of study and encourage them to apply their critical thinking and collaboration skills.” Students in grades K-2 applied these skills at five stations, where structure building was the predominant theme. At one, they worked together to build the tallest towers possible out of recyclable materials such as toilet paper rolls and cardboard,

Levittown elementary school students and their parents were invited to attend District Music Night, held at Division Avenue High School, as a first step in exploring this popular Grammy School award-winning program. “You have chosen wisely to have your students study instrumental music,” District Curriculum Associate for Music Vincent D’Ulisse said to the parents. “This is not just the study of music, but the coming together as an ensemble.”
After performances by the band and orchestra, under the batons of Michael Bastone and Mark Martufi, participants were invited to join the performers in the gymnasium to take an up-close look at the instruments offered. It was also an excellent way for the students and parents to speak to the musicians and the music program staff. Parents were encouraged to register their child for an instrument for the 2017-2018 school year. Elementary school
students in grades 3-5 are eligible to participate in the instrumental program where they receive lessons each week and participate in performance ensembles. Sanford H. Calhoun High School students and faculty jumped at the chance to create, perform and listen to poetry throughout the month of April. The English Department and the library staff created a number of engaging events to help celebrate students’ love of literature and to support creative writers. The month kicked off with published poet, Billy Lamont, visiting with Ms. Boland’s Creative Writing class for a series of writing workshops and then working with various classes in the library. Calhoun librarian Kathryn Elefterion created poetry stations in which students could create different types of visual poetry in blocks of time. A few options included blackout poetry, in which students blacked out words in the pages of old books with Sharpies,
leaving behind a few words in a brand-new poem; newspaper poems, in which students cut out letters and shapes from magazines and glued them together; and paint chip poems, in which students used the names of the colors to create themed poems. Students surprised themselves with how much fun they had creating poetry in new, different ways. Students who wished to read and perform their own original works competed in The Voice: Slam Poetry Style on April 21st, a competition in the style of the popular TV show “The Voice.” Thirteen students wrote two original poems, one based on the theme “The Letter Never Delivered,” and performed them without prompts for four teacher coaches, who then selected students for their teams. Several underclassmen took to the Calhoun stage for the
first time and dazzled the audience. The event, set up in the Little Theatre, was well-attended by numerous English classes, who ultimately voted Ms. Brill’s team the victor. Students who wanted to read poetry in a relaxed, less competitive environment had the chance to shine at the Java Room on April 26. Students were encouraged to get up and read their original poems or poetry from published authors before a few classes in an open-mic style setting. Many English and special education teachers also created poetry mini-units or lessons to celebrate National Poetry Month. “National Poetry Month is always a tremendous time at Calhoun,” English chairperson Kim Serpe. “Students and teachers maximize the opportunity to celebrate the written and spoken word.”

Take Heart With Tea The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Raising Funds Jonas E. Salk Middle School student Anthony Vaughn planned and implemented an autism awareness fundraiser to benefit the Nassau-Suffolk Autism Society of America.
With the assistance of classmate Jamie Church, Anthony sold commitment cards for a donation price of $1 during lunch periods, raising a total of $160 for NSASA.

Top Ranking In a listing of the state and nation’s best high schools, U. S. News and World Report has ranked MacArthur High School as one of New York State’s top 100 high schools. The Levittown high school received a Silver Medal
award and a ranking of 87th in the state, as well as a national ranking of 896. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald said she is proud of the General Douglas MacArthur High School faculty and students. “It
is such an honor to have received the recognition of a world class publication like U.S. News and World report,” she remarked. To receive a top ranking, U.S. News and World report determined whether students at a particular
school performed higher than statistically expected in that state, factoring in percentages of economically disadvantaged students. The survey also assessed whether disadvantaged students performed at or
better than average for the least-advantaged students. Graduation rates higher than 75 percent and a college-readiness factor were also considered. “This recognition is a true testament to the pride and passion for success that
is already embedded in the fabric of this exceptional school,” Principal Joseph Sheehan said. “This is another example of why I am so proud of every member of the MacArthur family.”
Wantagh High School student-journalist Sean Smith, senior editor-inchief of “The Warrior,” has won an honorable mention Quill Award in the Most Outstanding Reporter category during Adelphi University’s annual Press Day. This is the fourth consecutive year that a Wantagh journalist has garnered a Quill Award in this prestigious category.
“Sean takes on challenging topics that are difficult to write about and does a terrific job,” said Pete Kravitz, high school newspaper adviser. In addition, junior Grace Tague received a thirdplace Quill Award in the Feature Article category. During a former Adelphi Press Day competition, Grace previously won first place in the Best

Honor Society Inductions The National Honor Society of Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools in Levittown collectively inducted 157 students during traditional candlelighting ceremonies celebrating the organization’s tenets of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. At Division Avenue High School, Principal John Coscia described the inductees as school leaders. “They set a high standard for themselves and accept nothing less. In
doing so, they inspire me and their peers to be the best they can be because that’s what leaders do,” he said. “They inspire and lift up everyone around them.” In keeping with tradition, the Division Avenue High School chapter awarded art teacher Tim Ryan as Teacher of the Year for his contributions to the school community and influence on students. Math teacher Brittany Ruczaj from MacArthur High School also received this prestigious honor and encouraged
the students to choose a profession they love and are passionate about. In his address to the inductees and their parents, MacArthur High School Principal Joseph Sheehan said, “As educators, we hope to instill in students the desire to act with character, not because they believe it is expected, but because they believe it is right. I am confident that this clearly defines each and every one of these inductees.”
Personal Approach Students had to think small in order to think big at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Sixth-graders in Ann Marie Gilroy’s class split into teams and completed the “Mini Me” STEAM challenge. Children had to make miniature versions of themselves using pipe cleaners. The small figures
had to be to a one-ninth scale, requiring the use of math. Each team then had to create a mini-structure to safely house the people with four-inch dowels and rubber bands. The students followed the engineering process: ask, imagine, plan, create and improve. The activity taught children problem-solving skills while encouraging
communication and collaboration. This was the third STEAM activity students in Ms. Gilroy’s class have participated in this year, with the challenges getting progressively harder. Later this month, they will built life-size versions of their structures and try to fit inside themselves.

Registration Underway Join the ACLD Foundation and help support the 3,000 people Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), headquartered in Bethpage, serves each year by taking part in the second annual Journey to an Enviable Life 5K Walk/ Run on Saturday, May 20th at Heckscher State Park in East Islip. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. Registration is now underway and will continue through day of the event. In addition to the 5K Walk/Run, there will also be a 1K Fun Run. Both are non-competitive, untimed events that take place on flat, paved courses to give adults and children of all ages an opportunity to take part. For those who want to support the ACLD mission but are unable to attend, there is an option to participate by registering as a “Virtual Walker.” The 5K or 1K registration fee is $20 per person, and registration for the 1K Fun Run for children ages 3 to 12 is $10 per child. All participants will receive a T-shirt and refreshments. Free parking will be made available to registered walkers. Media sponsor Cox Media will be on-site

Conference Champs Sanford H. Calhoun High School’s girls track and field have never captured the conference title before. That was until May 1st, when they clinched a perfect 13-0 season, earning the school its first such title. The day started off strong for the ladies as junior captain Paige Sfiroudis captured second place in the 400m hurdles along with the 100m hurdles. She also won the long jump and is currently ranked No. 2 on Long Island and No. 7 in New York State. “In true leader form, senior captain Cristin Rodriquez would take three first-place finishes on the day; the 100m hurdles, 100m dash and triple jump,” said coach Joseph Migliano. This was Rodriguez’s last chance to compete for a conference title. “I just wanted to help the team where I could, and earn something special that our school has never achieved,” said Rodriguez who is currently ranked No. 2 in New York State for the 100m hurdles. The throwers for Calhoun would take first,
second and fourth in discus and first, second and fourth in shotput adding some serious points for the team. Those ladies include, Julianne Losquadro, Julissa McCloud, Jamie Campanelli, Madison Padro, Victoria Unz and Jamie Campanelli. “Not to be outdone by the upperclassmen the freshmen would have a stand out day as well,” added Migliano. Lisa Jose would drop over a full second to run a 12.9 and take third on the 100m dash along with a 27.7 in the 200m dash to take third. “She is a very special athlete, the sky is truly the limit with her and I know she’s going to have a very bright future in track & field,” he added. “She is without question one of the fastest freshmen in all of Nassau County.” Jose would also anchor the 4x100m relay to victory. Along with Jose, Calhoun had a freshmen middle distance runner that gets faster each time she steps on the track; Elizabeth Tuzzolo ran another personal best in the 400m dash in a time of
63.6 seconds grabbing her team a well-needed finish in that event. Elizabeth has dropped over five seconds on her time since the beginning of the season and is one of the fastest 400m freshmen in Nassau County. The Calhoun sprinters wouldn’t stop there, the 4x100m team of Mia Advocate, Dana Brown, eighth-grader Kristina Losquadro and Lisa Jose would dominate the relay and put the meet well out of reach for any other team. This victory was a team effort for Calhoun; the distance team of Katie Corona, Christina Garbarino, Nadya Resnick and Samantha LaTorre made sure that the other teams didn’t pick up too many points in the distance races, Migliano explained. “They were a compliment to the sprinters, throwers, jumpers and the meet couldn’t have been won without them,” Migliano added. “This was a very special day for Calhoun; the ladies set a goal at the beginning of the season and they went out each week to meet it.”

On April 19th, seniors from Wellington C. Mepham High School’s College Spanish courses attended the musical “On Your Feet” in Manhattan with their teachers, Cecilia Larrea and Danielle McNeil. “Students had recently completed a unit of study on immigration. The musical, which highlights Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s journey as Cuban immigrants in search of the American dream, was a wonderful culmination to the unit,” explained World Languages Chairperson
Rosa Kaplan. After the show, students learned more about how the Estefans have impacted the music industry. They then wrote a cultural comparison to compare the Estefans to another immigrant who has contributed to American society. In Italian classes, students researched family members that entered the United States through Ellis Island. They were able to view ship manifests that included personal information on their family members; many of whom

they did not know. As a culminating activity to the unit, 12th-grade students from Kristen Montuori’s and Andrew Franklin’s Italian classes visited Ellis Island on April 21. “Students were guided by an Italian audio tour as they explored the exhibits of the museum and learned about the immigrant experience,” Franklin said. “After the museum, students experienced Italian food and culture at Eataly NYC Downtown, an Italian restaurant and marketplace.”
Two months after nine students were chosen by their peers to represent Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the first leg of a school swap trip to Pascagoula, Mississippi, their southern counterparts traveled north. Eleven students, along with their teacher and assistant principal, enjoyed a four-day trip that included a welcome party, class shadowing and trip into Manhattan. On Friday, April 28th, both classes met to discuss the differences and similarities between school lives. According to Pascagoula students there is no cell phone usage permitted at school, there are lines directing one-
way traffic in the halls and all adults are addressed as “ma’am” or “sir.” “Culture drives behavior,” stated Assistant Principal Ken Zisel who helped orchestrate this program after several personal trips to the region. “Most of the population is generations of families that grew up in the town of Pascagoula and remained, so folks are well aware of the rules and what is expected.” Calhoun students spoke highly of the high levels of courtesy and respect they saw in Pascagoula. While their southern friends were surprised to learn of the freedoms Calhoun students are allowed on and off campus,

stating this shows a real sign of trust from the staff. Their curriculum is taught in 90-minute blocks, instead of 40-minute periods like at Calhoun. “They stick to the schedule and everyone settles down immensely to learn,” said one student from Pascagoula. The visitors thoroughly enjoyed acclaimed New York fare including pizza and bagels. Both schools cited a strong sense of community support and commitment to students. And in the end, as Zisel said, “kids are kids no matter where you go.”

East Meadow High School juniors received a special visit from members of the Vietnam War Veterans Association of Long Island who spoke about their experiences during the war. The veterans discussed hardships of the war, including serving overseas
in extreme weather conditions, delay of information regarding life in the United States and surviving guerilla warfare. Providing a firsthand look at the war, the veterans circulated authentic materials used by soldiers such as helmets, vests, books, photo albums and
enemy equipment. Following the presentation, the students participated in a Q&A session with the veterans and expressed their gratitude to them for serving and devoting their lives to protecting the country’s freedoms.
