Two teams from Bellmore-Merrick Central High School’s John F. Kennedy High School presented in the Northwell Health SPARK Challenge competition, netting a $3,000 award. “The competition actually began last fall, when two groups of Kennedy students from science and engineering classes shadowed professionals in different departments of the Northwell Health System,” said science and STEM chair Robert Soel. The students completed the competition when teams from across Long Island came together to give presentations about

the various professions and departments at Northwell Health on April 12th. Kennedy’s ASR/biology team won second place for their oral presentation and third place for their career advertisement poster representing the Emergency Department from North Shore-LIJ. Their combined prize includes a $3,000 award to be used for a field trip chosen by the 14-member student team and their teacher. Olivia Mark, Nicole Khouryawad, Chloe Rome, Lucas Rosen, Jake Levine, Peter Giannaris, Jonathan Mashal, Nina Weissbach, Amanda Schleider, Hunter Moran, Whitney

Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

ROV Launch As swimmers took to the lanes of the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow’s Eisenhower Park, Wantagh Horizons Program students from Mandalay Elementary School launched remotely operated vehicles in the water upon completion of an engineering unit. Under the direction of Horizons teacher Renee MacDermott and marine scientist Brett Curlew, the teams of

students submerged their ROVs with the intention of collecting various objects during an allotted amount of time. “We have increased our rigor this year by having the teams design ROVs that can collect objects underwater,” MacDermott said. “The aquatic center is the perfect setting for this activity.” Prior to the launch, the gifted and talented

students learned about density and buoyancy and then designed, sketched and built their ROVs, using PVC pipe, bilge pipe motors, a central box battery and cameras. History Bee Qualifiers The East Meadow School District is pleased to announce that Nicholas Espinosa and James Griesing, eighth-grade students from W.T. Clarke Middle School, have qualified to compete in the National History Bee, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 1st-2nd. The annual competition is designed to motivate and reward students for studying history. Social Studies Chairperson Lisa Scully explained that the road to

the national competition started with a schoolwide class test. Winners of that test went on to take an online exam to qualify for the regional competition, which was held in Yonkers on April 16th. After attending the regional competition, Nicholas and James qualified for the national contest. Both students said they have techniques for excelling in history. James, whose favorite historical period is World War I, said, “If you pay attention

in social studies class, you can learn a lot of the information.” Nicholas added that his success stems from his enjoyment in visiting museums and watching documentaries. His favorite historical period, he revealed, is World War II. The district congratulates both students on this academic accomplishment and wished them success in the national competition.

Once Upon a Time Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center second-graders in the Bellmore School District dressed as fairy princesses, princes, farmers, kings and queens as they performed short plays based on the fairytales “The 12 Dancing Princesses,“ “Many Moons” and “One Gift Deserves Another” (“The Turnip”) for parents and peers. The plays were a culmination of workshops led by artist-in-

residence Lorraine ZellerAgostino. For the past several weeks, Ms. Zeller-Agostino worked with students on their nonverbal improvisational acting techniques through the study of fairytales. In addition to reading and studying fairytales, the students learned to depict expression, emotion and choral techniques. The goals of the program were

to provide students with the opportunity to explore their creativity, learn cooperation skills, feel successful and explore the art of drama. Ms. Zeller-Agostino explained, “We are bringing these stories to life and have learned that there are many versions to a story by the way we transport ourselves into the characters.”

Learning the Dangers Deanna Buzzetta, a freshman at Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, fumbled with a child’s shape-sorting toy in the school parking lot on April 30th. Normally, she wouldn’t have a problem but this time she was wearing goggles designed to simulate visual impairment. “My peripheral vision was impaired,” she noted. “It took me longer to get the pieces in the correct hole.” During this exercise, which is part of the Arrive Alive Tour, students are educated about the dangers

of impaired driving, as well as distracted driving. A driving simulator video game allows students to experience the potential consequences of drunk and distracted driving in a controlled environment. “The simulator allows students to experience the potential consequences of drunk and distracted driving in a controlled environment,” said Wendy Tepfer, director of the Community Parent Center, which was responsible for bringing this interactive program to the school. They were also offered simple stacking and sorting games to complete. “The students always

come up and say right away, ‘oh this will be easy,’” said Tepfer. “After completing a sorting or stacking task, they are stunned by how difficult such a seemingly simple toy becomes nearly impossible to navigate while simulating intoxication or impairment.” The Seatbelt Convincer, operated by New York State Troopers, is an educational tool that allows riders to experience force, up to five times their body weight, similar to that of a 5-7mph crash. “It was scary to see the impact even though we were going so slow,” said freshman Kayla Menendez.

Lesson in Privacy During a riveting assembly, “I Am Someone,” with speaker and retired Kentucky police officer Scott Harvey, students at East Meadow’s Woodland Middle School learned how the internet and popular apps work, as well as the sobering fact that online privacy does not exist. “The problem with social media and the internet is that we don’t have a firm understanding of how technology works,” Harvey told the students. “What you say online is

like a microphone that reaches the world,” he noted. “Social media gives you great power, and with great power comes responsibility.” Harvey explained the pros and cons of popular apps Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram and explained that posts go to the cloud where a copy has been made. He also noted that because posts never truly disappear after being deleted, students should assume they are always being recorded.

“If you wouldn’t say it in person, why say it online?” Harvey asked the students. Harvey’s overall message was punctuated with videos of worst-case scenarios of misuse of the internet and common apps, business officials losing their jobs over comments made online and a student being cyberbullied. Most importantly, he urged students to search for help if they are having a problem related to internet postings.

Following an extensive study of children’s author Gail Gibbons, secondgraders in Nancy Del Rosario’s class at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District worked on their own writing. Students had to complete nonfiction pieces, with many choosing animals and places as topics. Each child then had to do research using books and online resources before

writing a first draft. After an editing process in which students got feedback from their classmates and their teacher, they published their final pieces. The students used Gail Gibbons’s books as mentor texts to serve as examples of good writing. Each completed story included a cover page with illustration, introduction and conclusion, table of contents and dedication page. Ms. Del Rosario

explained that students were encouraged to incorporate text features such as fun facts, a glossary and pictures or diagrams. The children celebrated their completed works during a publishing party on April 25th. Invited guests were encouraged to visit with the young experts and to leave “glows and grows” — compliments and constructive comments.

Out of This World Three students from Wisdom Lane Middle School were recently recognized as Long Island Section winners in the 2018 Space Systems American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Essay Contest. First place seventh-grader Angelina Pilataxy, second place seventh-grader Erin Alvarez and third place eighth-grader Gary Nepravishta, won for their respective grades. They received cash prizes courtesy of the Long Island Section and invitations to an AIAA dinner with distinguished lecturer and aerospace historian Dick Hallion on June 13th. Pilataxy and Nepravishta will move on to the national level as both their essays were sent to the AIAA Space Systems Technical Committee for being the best regional seventh-grade essay

and eighth-grade essay, respectively. Nepravishta was selected as the local first place winner last year as a seventh-grader. With the help of science teachers Leslie Maynard and Vanessa Kowalczyk, Wisdom Lane Middle School students have been victorious each year, participating in the contest since 2015. “Vanessa Kowalczyk and I both agree that the motivation for our students doing well is the fact that we have done well in the past,” said Maynard. “They are inspired by the past winners and want to represent Wisdom Lane well. We both think they all have the ‘right stuff’ to go all the way.” All the students in Maynard’s seventh-grade classes wrote essays and she selected the best ones to enter into the contest. Members of Wisdom

Lane’s Earth and Space Club, facilitated by both Kowalczyk and Maynard, all wrote essays as well to submit. Their challenge was to fit the essay contest theme in 1,000 words or less. Students were asked to describe the role of astronauts and their impact on NASA, their impact on the future of the United States and their role on international partnerships. Both Alvarez and Pilataxy wrote about the roles that astronauts play, while Nepravishta focused his writing on Michael Collins, an American astronaut. Pilataxy and Nepravishta will be notified in May if their essay’s won at the national level. If so, they will receive a certificate of recognition, have their essay published by AIAA, be awarded a cash prize and receive a one-year free membership with AIAA.

The King and I Drama club members in grades 3-5 at East Broadway Elementary School recently showcased their singing and acting abilities for family and friends during their evening production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I.” The students also performed two in-school performances for their peers. Director Sue Pokalsky, musical director Christine Conte and assistant directors Debra Kirby and Stephanie Zervakos guided the students through rehearsals, practicing lines and perfecting the musical numbers for the performances. Technical crew members Bobby Bottone, Jennifer Mazza

and Alexandra Mercaldo also assisted in making the production a success, along with chorographers Anna Bowman, Toni Carbone, Michaela Moore and student helper Caitlin Barry. Students journeyed audience members back to 1862. British teacher Anna Leonowens played by Delaney Renart and Maya Ramos, arrives in Bangkok, Siam with her son Louis Leonowens, played by Ronnie Rossi and Jack Sullivan, to teach the King of Siam’s royal children. The King, played by Michael Scioscia and Riley Schmutzler, holds traditions that Anna does not agree with and the two struggle to find a common

ground. Their relationship takes a positive turn when the King asks for Anna’s help to change his barbarian ruler image. The two soon form an understanding, respect and love for each other. With the guidance of advisers Erin Cox and Amanda McCabe, the East Broadway stage was set to transform audience members to Siam with the help of the school’s set design club members. The cast, dressed in colorful attire, performed classic songs such as “Getting to Know You” and “Shall We Dance” to the delight of the East Broadway staff, students and their families.

The district implemented the VEI program during the 2016-2017 school year and allows students to develop a virtual business from concept to implementation. The class is a real work environment in which the students assume business responsibilities based on their backgrounds and interests and the classroom simulates the atmosphere of a company. As employees of a virtual

business, students are held accountable for the company’s performance. They conduct market research, develop a business plan, design an e-commerce website, pay wages and taxes, maintain 401(K) plans and draft an annual report. In addition, students have the opportunity to interact with 5,000 other VE firms from school districts locally, nationally and internationally. The District congratulates the students on this academic accomplishment and continues success in upcoming competitions.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. During the event, the students also learned to test the salinity, pH balance and turbidity of the creek water.
