Rainforest Lesson

irst-graders in Ms. Waters’ class at Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District recently participated in a workshop about tropical rainforests hosted by the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences. The workshop, led by instructor Christina Godfrey, included a slideshow presentation, which focused on different animals and plants in rainforests. Town Preservation Continued From 2 Gilbert Jackson and Morris Jackson). At the time, African Americans comprised just 10 percent of the entire Union Army. Remains were interred at the cemetery between 1862 and 1943. The town also landmarked the former site of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s childhood

home, located at the corner of Salisbury Park Drive and Valentines Road in Westbury. A young Roosevelt lived at the home from 1888 to 1892 (it has since been demolished). In addition to serving as the First Lady from 1933 to 1945, Roosevelt was active with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and

the National Council of Negro Women. She was also appointed to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, where she helped write The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Landmark status grants protection under town law to the former site of Eleanor Roosevelt’s childhood home and to

the St. Matthias Church Cemetery. Regardless of ownership, any plans involving town landmarks must first be submitted to the town’s Landmarks Preservation Commission for review. The Town of Hempstead has granted landmark status to dozens of historic

Celebrating Earth For the last 15 years, students at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center have beautified their school grounds by planting flowers and trees as part of an annual Earth Day Celebration. Prior to planting the flowers and the blossoming plum tree, the kindergarten, first and second-grade students sang songs, recited poetry and took the Earth Day

pledge in special assembly programs for friends and family. Additionally, the kindergartners took part in a parade of hats, which showcased their creativity and featured hats made from recycled materials. It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

as the influx of visitors exponentially bolsters Fire Island’s economy. As I enjoyed my first few moments back on Fire Island, I noticed one characteristic that I had longed for the most. The geniality of the people who call this island home is a trait that I have never experienced elsewhere. Living as an “islander” grants you access into an exclusive club reserved only for those who treasure the island the most. Like myself, those same islanders have built the barrier beach up even after devastation. Following Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island was in pretty

bad shape. Thankfully, essentially all facets of the infrastructure have been repaired, and the island is better than ever. As one walks down the beach, “TrapBags” can be seen. Filled with sand, these large canvas sacks were purchased in order to create a dune. It seems as though this plan is thoroughly succeeding, possibly saving countless homes previously marked for demolition, like my own. After months of rebuilding, Fire Island is back in fighting shape. It seems as though this little slice of heaven is ready to welcome the masses as we quickly slide into summer.

I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted

nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

I took a trip to Fire Island this past weekend. For the first time since last summer, I was back home. When I hopped on the ferry, I did not even think about the changes that may have influenced my little island. Upon arrival, it became clear that the summer rush had not yet spoiled the little barrier beach which, for me, symbolizes paradise. After many months of labor, the island is starting to get ready for the busy season. Starting Memorial Day weekend, the concrete sidewalks which seemed so isolated will be crawling with tourists. This is not a bad thing, however,

Expression Through Art Throughout the month, students, faculty and administrators at W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District were able to brighten their days by visiting the school’s vibrant Garden Party art exhibit. The exhibit, which ran until April 25th, featured artwork by students in art teacher

Shari Zimmerman’s class who are affiliated with the W.T. Clarke High School REACH program for students with autism. The exhibit contained approximately 30 pieces of artwork, including oil pastels, papier-mache and watercolor designs. In addition, the students established their own business, Sweet Art Cards,

in which they created artwork for greeting cards and sold the cards to the school community throughout the month. The exhibit provided students with a rewarding outlet to express themselves through art and allowed them to strengthen their motor and social skills in a positive environment.
