n celebration of Earth Day, kindergarten students at East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown learned how to make the earth a better place by recycling. Celebration Of Achievement MacArthur High School in Levittown held its second annual Night of Honor, inducting 160 students into the art, business, math and world language honor societies during a special celebration in the school’s auditorium. After a pre-ceremony performance by the MacArthur chamber ensemble, Assistant
Principal Anne Rao welcomed the students, parents and staff to the event that has become a cherished high school tradition. “This celebration shows that all of your work and dedication is truly recognized at MacArthur,” Ms. Rao said. “Congratulations on achieving this esteemed
honor.” After a brief history of each society and qualifications for membership, officers from each of the societies called the name of the inductees, who then recited a pledge to signify their membership. Upon completion of the ceremony, the students, parents and staff were invited to a reception.

The Space Between By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to
see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of
me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.
Holy Trinity’s principal, Mr. Gene Fennell recently announced Kiara Powell of Westbury as Valedictorian and Nicole Kaplinsky of East Meadow as Salutatorian of the Class of 2015. Kiara Powell came to Holy Trinity from Hicksville Middle School. During her years at Holy Trinity she has been very involved in different aspects of student life. She is involved in Athletics as a member of the tennis and track teams. Ms.
Powell is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Science and Foreign Language Honor Societies. Ms. Powell will be attending Hofstra University in the fall to pursue a degree in Biology. Salutatorian Nicole Kaplinsky attended Woodland Middle School in East Meadow prior to coming to Holy Trinity. During most of her senior year, she has been busy as the Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook, but she also finds time to be on the Varsity Badminton team and to be involved in Mu Alpha Theta and Math Fax. Ms. Kaplinsky is a member of National Honor Society, as well as the Math Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. Ms. Kaplinsky will be attending Hunter College to pursue a degree in Chemistry.

New Start Time For Air Show For the first time, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of New York State’s largest public events, will take place starting at 12 noon and run until 5 p.m. – a new time for the show, which traditionally ran from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the best parking opportunities. The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, which will be headlining this year’s show, will be the final act and make their appearance in the sky above Jones Beach at approximately 4:00 p.m. This will be the legendary demonstration squadron’s fourth appearance at the show, having last headlined the show in 2009. Their performance
will include approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines. The show will also feature veteran Bethpage Air Show performers including the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, , Sean D. Tucker – Team Oracle, Lt. Col. John Klatt – Air National Guard, the John Klatt Airshows – Screamin’ Sasquatch Jet Waco Aerobatic Team, GEICO Skytypers, Miss GEICO Speedboat, American Airpower Warbirds, and David Windmiller. New to the show this year is the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team performing on jets. With its fast and powerful aircraft piloted by “flying aces,” this unique aerobatics team performs a meticulously coordinated ballet, sometimes flying
within 3 meters of each other at speeds of over 435 miles per hour. The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach is free of charge, but a standard $10 vehicle use fee will be collected. Bethpage Air Show announcers and Air Boss Wayne Boggs will lead air show activities from the Jones Beach State Park Central Mall Boardwalk area where food, beverages and ground activities will be available for fans. The golden sun shining on my face, the breeze gently blowing across my face like a tornado. I take a sip of sweet ice tea. Dogs barking, birds chirping all day. Children running faster than cheetahs. Bikes on roads, children playing basketball on the street. Kid yelling, “Whoooooh, no more cold!”
WINNING POSTER - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad congratulated 5th Grader Krista Fisher of East Broadway Elementary School in Seaford (Levittown School District) on her winning recycling poster. The winning posters will be prominently displayed on the sides of town’s fleet of recycling and garbage trucks during their daily pickups. This is the second year that the town has held the contest, which was open to all elementary schools in the Town of Hempstead.

Night Of Honor It was a night of achievement as more than 100 Levittown students received accolades and induction into the art, business, math, Tri-M and world language honor societies during Division Avenue High School’s second annual Night of Honor. Musical performances by the chamber orchestra, under the direction of Mark Martufi, and performance of the Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, under the
direction of Paige Hardison, punctuated an evening of academic achievement and recognition. In her address to the inductees, Principal Joan Lorelli talked about the inspiring individuals who were not inducted into honor societies but should have. Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes also said the key to success is separating yourself from everyone else. The advisers and officers of each of the honor
societies then called the names of the inductees, who then repeated a pledge, signifying their membership. In addition, Art Honor Society President Danielle Porrazzo announced Faith Ginther as the recipient of the Art Show Poster Presentation Award. Upon completion of the ceremony, the students, parents and staff were invited to a reception displaying student artwork.

Earthly Celebration Wantagh first graders are more in tune on how to preserve the planet’s important resources after a daylong Earth Day celebration. The Wantagh Elementary School students discussed the slogan “reduce, reuse, recycle” and the ways in
which humans can reduce waste. Students in each of the classes were instructed to create a t-shirt to match their classrooms’ themes, which they proudly modeled. The students wrote about how they can improve the environment and placed their writings
on a classroom poster. The culminating activity was a get together in the cafeteria, where the students sang songs about recycling and Earth Day and ate healthy green foods and dirt pudding.

The birds could almost be heard chirping “Home Sweet Home” in Lido Beach today, as Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and the New York Audubon Society saluted 14 local elementary school students for their efforts to protect the oceanfront bird sanctuaries that inhabit the township’s beaches that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy only two and half years ago. By protecting their endangered friends, these students from Drexel Avenue Elementary School in Westbury are helping Hempstead Town continue ongoing work to rebuild the Sandy-battered shoreline by protecting their endangered feathered friends. The students are winners of the New York Audubon Society’s “Be a Good Egg” poster contest,
where the youngsters crafted creative signs to bring awareness to visitors to share the beach with migratory and beachnesting bird species. “Preserving the nesting areas for our beachdwelling birds is crucial for their species to survive and thrive,” Murray said. “Thank you to these wonderful students and the people at Audubon New York for helping us protect our feathered friends, and help them find their way to ‘Home Sweet Home’ here at our beautiful beaches.” “New York’s beaches provide enjoyment for millions of people and offer critical breeding habitat for shorebirds,” said Erin Crotty, Executive Director of Audubon New York. “There is no better place to make a difference for the many endangered and threatened birds that rely on our shores during nesting season

The Washington Post named both Division Avenue High School, ranked No. 86, and MacArthur High School, ranked No. 89, as two of New York State’s most challenging high schools. The annual high school ranking was calculated by dividing the number of college-level tests given at the schools in the 2013-2014 school year divided by the number of graduates that same
year. Also noted in the ranking are the number of students who come from families qualifying for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence. The Washington Post’s state ranking once again supports the district’s testimony that both high schools exceed national

In celebration of Earth Day, kindergarten students at East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown learned how to make the earth a better place by recycling. Long Island Center for Arts and Science representative Diane Arthur visited each of the classrooms and spoke with the students about ways to reduce their footprints
on the planet with the slogan “reduce, reuse and recycle.” The students learned the importance of turning lights off when not in use, recycling plastics, cans and paper and conserving water. “Doing this once is not enough,” Ms. Arthur said. “You must continue to recycle and reduce.” The students also planted seeds in recycled

newspaper pots and played a recycle game. Upon identifying photos on cards, the students learned in which bucket the item would belong, including a metal, paper, or plastic recycle bucket. Teacher Donna DeLorenzo explained that the Long Island Center for Arts and Science class on recycling was acquired through a grant from NEFCU.

MacArthur High School English teacher Michele Witte and ten students with exceptional writing skills attended Adelphi University’s 2015 Poetry Day. These aspiring poets included Tatiana Clover, Victoria DiMartino, Adora Erdakos, Isabella Katz, Sarah Luebke, Jennifer
Marquesano, Skye Mollica, Teresa Neri, Vincent Occhiogrosso and Alexis Winter. The students attended two workshops, followed by a keynote address from accomplished poet, National Book Award Finalist and Princeton Professor James Richardson. The
students learned about the latest trends in poetry and creative writing and practiced these techniques under the guidance of Adelphi University’s published faculty. In addition, sophomore Isabella Katz received an Award of Excellence for one of her poems.

Senior Counseling Workshops While enjoying their “golden years,” senior citizens may also face stressful challenges often related to isolation, medical problems, and/ or losing a spouse or loved one. Lending a hand to mature residents, Hempstead Town, in conjunction with the Long Island Crisis Center, is hosting free workshops entitled, “Putting Together the Pieces for a Happy Life.” The workshops will focus on these unique challenges and provide seniors with important information on how they can receive help.
