The Sanford H. Calhoun High School boys volleyball team captured their first Nassau County championship April 27, sweeping Bethpage High School in a three-game set. The championship matches were played at Brookside School, where the Colts prevailed 25-14, 25-20 and 25-16. Senior Owen Rose, who

is slated to play volleyball at Penn State in the fall, led the team with 27 kills. Pat Sanchez had 31 assists and 12 kills while Matt Kalfas made 10 kills. Rob Baguio led the back row with 10 digs, and Chris Zaveckas posted five blocks. “The kids worked extra hard this year and gave it their all. They worked well as a team and were

determined to bring home a county championship,” explained coach Ryan Pastuch, who is also a special education teacher. “We did have a few players that had to quarantine during the season, but we overcame the challenge and other players really stepped up to help us succeed.”

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. A vibrant spring afternoon and community pride was the backdrop for Wantagh High School’s annual homecoming game and senior day, held on April 10 against the West Hempstead Rams. Fun filled activities started with decorated high school hallways and a Friday afternoon virtual pep rally, during which the district’s sports teams, musicians, club members WANTAGH HIGH SCHOOL WARRIORS - The Wantagh High School Warriors and community supporters beat the West Hempstead Rams 37-6 during the homecoming game, held on April 10. were celebrated. musician, dance team member and cheerleader. In order to accommodate the number of seniors who requested to attend their final homecoming, many parents gave up their tickets to make this special day happen, Superintendent of Schools John McNamara said. Seniors, therefore, were provided seating at the two goal post sections on either side of the field to watch the game and cheer on their team. During the halftime show, the varsity cheerleaders motivated the already upbeat fans

and the marching band and dance team gave a flawless performance of tune favorites like Eddie Van Halen’s “Jump” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Seniors Robert Spiteri and Helen Ibrahim were then crowned king and queen to the delight of spectators, with Makenna Boutin and Christopher Murale as first runnersup and Noah Gabe and Kassidy Samaroo as second runners-up. The Warriors lived up to their reputation and name, claiming a 37-6 victory against the Rams.
