Stamping Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank is teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 13th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous homeowners. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy. Simply leave nonperishable food items, such as canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no glass items), next to your mailbox before your regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13th. Your USPS letter carrier will do the rest. All food donated will help replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. “Every donation, no matter how small, will help us serve those of our neighbors who are struggling to put food on their tables,” said Randi

We’re happy to help give back to the community, and provide much-needed food support for the thousands of Long Island families affected by hunger.” Since its inception twenty-five years ago, Stamp Out Hunger has collected approximately 1.5 billion pounds of food nationally to help address the issue of hunger in

America. Last year, Stamp Out Hunger netted 80.1 million pounds of food in 10,000 cities and towns, and in all 50 states. In 2016, Long Islanders donated 471,553 pounds of food, which supplemented 392,963 meals, to Stamp Out Hunger. That generosity made Long Island one of the top-ten food collection regions.

Morning Mindset “Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.” ~ Lemony Snicket We all have our routines. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column

schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

100 Years of Scouting Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Louis B. Imbroto, Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson and Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. proudly joined with the Boy Scouts of American Theodore Roosevelt Council as it honored President Theodore Roosevelt and the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in Nassau County.

President Roosevelt, our nation’s 26th President, was very instrumental in starting Scouting in Nassau County and served as the Council’s first commissioner. The organization embarked upon a special pilgrimage that included stops at Young’s Cemetery, where President Roosevelt is interred and here, his former home, Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay.

This event also acknowledged the century of commitment by the Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council, an organization responsible for the positive development of this nation’s young men, as well as those people who have given of themselves to advance scouting in their communities

WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders. Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend. It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto.

A medical helicopter took the boy to the hospital where he later died. The Gonzalez family set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/our-beloved-jonathon-gonzalez) to help with the funeral expenses. Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse. Mourners marched to the canal where the crash happened.

Safety on the Field During the April 20th meeting of the Levittown Board of Education, Division Avenue High School senior Meagan Schulman was recognized for her Gold Award project for the Girl Scouts of America. Meaghan has created an organization called “Project Keep Playing,” which encourages female

athletes to wear facemasks on the field to prevent injury. Meaghan claims that many injuries can be preventable for the one in four athletes who have received or witnessed a face injury due to the lack of a facemask. “As a softball player myself, I have witnessed numerous injuries sustained to players that

Don’t Pollute First-graders at Birch School in the Merrick School District celebrated Earth Day by fashioning baby owls and nests out of natural resources and recycled materials. Students in Kelley Merkle and Allysa Meirowitch’s class read

“All About Owls” by Jim Arnosky and learned about the life cycle of an owl, how they are beneficial to the environment, and the importance of respecting and protecting their habitats. With the help of teaching assistant Judy

Artwork Unveiled O’Neil, the first-graders created baby owls using pinecones, recycled paper and cotton balls. They also constructed nests for their hooting friends by using shredded paper and recycled brown paper bags to replicate twigs and branches.

The exemplary artwork of K-6 students was unveiled during the opening of the 2017 Bellmore Star Arts Gallery, held at the district office on April 20th. More than 40 pieces of artwork were exhibited in matching gold frames, donated by alumnus James Perna. Under the guidance of teachers Michelle

Block and Stephen Gorey, the students expressed themselves through a variety of media and skills sets including mask making, watercolor, pencil and more. A welcome addition to this year’s art venue was a performance by student-musicians, under the direction of Kathleen

Rostholder. Block said one of the purposes of the art show is “to infuse a love of the arts while showcasing students’ best works.” In addition, Gorey said, “The Bellmore Star Arts Gallery is a nice way to reward student leadership in the arts.”

Teacher Granted Tenure

During the April 20 Bellmore Board of Education meeting, teacher Michelle Block was granted tenure, one of the most important accomplishments of a teacher’s career, effective September 1st, 2017. Mrs. Block has taught art at both the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood

Center and Winthrop Avenue School since 2014. She has also accrued more than 400 hours of additional professional development and has been influential in preparing and selecting studentartwork for the annual Bellmore Star Arts Gallery. Bellmore Administrators Association representative

two young ladies; the entire district is extremely proud.” The intense threeday rehearsal period culminated with a live performance at the Adrian Phillips Ballroom in the historic Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, April 8th. Long Island University’s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences was recently admitted to the elite community of iSchools, an international consortium of prominent information schools with robust research traditions and well-established Ph.D. programs. The organization promotes high-level research and higher education in the information disciplines. Being part of this prestigious consortium is an honor shared with leading information schools around the world, including University of California, Berkley, Penn State and Carnegie Mellon. “LIU’s Palmer School is honored to be a part of the prestigious iSchools consortium,” said Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, President of LIU. “As a member of iSchools our Palmer School students and alumni will have access to expanded opportunities in the global information industry, where they have already proven to be leaders in the field.” One of the primary benefits is the close participation with other leading programs around the globe and the possibility of research and study collaborations that would benefit students, faculty and the greater LIU community. Model Congress Members of East Meadow High School’s National Social Studies Honor Society and Model Congress traveled to Washington, D.C., from April 5th-7th for an authentic learning experience. Over the three days, the 38 juniors and seniors, who are enrolled in Advanced Placement social studies courses, received a guided tour of historical monuments, including

the Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln and Vietnam Veterans memorials. During their travels the group visited the White House, Arlington National Cemetery, the National Museum of American History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Students also received a special visit from Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, who spoke

to the group about her work in D.C., outside the U.S. Capitol. In addition, the group stopped by the Newseum, an interactive museum that promotes, explains and defends free expression and the five freedoms of the First Amendment. Through this opportunity, the students enhanced their knowledge of U.S. history while experiencing the nation’s capital.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Every day is Earth Day at Wantagh Elementary School as kindergarten students in Sarah Danziger’s class reused various plastic containers to create planters for flowers and vegetables. Under the direction of STEAM (science, technology, engineering,

the arts and mathematics) teacher Kaitlin Dayton, the students learned that taking something old and making it into something new is the perfect way to recycle. “You need to do your part to take care of the environment,” Dayton told the class.

There were margarine containers, cupcake liner holders, deli containers and water bottles for the students to choose from and decorate prior to planting peppers, sunflowers, tomatoes, basil and thyme.

Advancing to Finals

Two W.T. Clarke Middle School students in the East Meadow School District have advanced to the National History Bee Finals, which will be held June 1st-4th in Atlanta, Georgia. Seventh-grader James Griesing and eighthgrader Nick Spano are moving on to nationals after competing in the New

York Regional Finals of the National History Bee. They will participate in the competitions for their respective age divisions, answering 25 questions in each of four preliminary buzzer rounds and taking a written exam consisting of 40 multiple choice questions about U.S. and global history. The 64 highest ranked

students in each division will advance to the championship buzzer round on the last day of the competition, where one student in each division will earn the title of National History Bee Grand Champion. The district wishes James and Nick much success as they compete at finals.

The annual Art in HeART Exhibit provides an opportunity for Nassau County residents to view the artwork of Long Island’s most talented emerging artists in grades k-12. Sofia submitted an oil painting of a doughnut and cupcake in shade and paralleled by the sun. Using watercolor paint, Katelyn painted a cat standing in the sun. Karen exhibited a joker using line art computer graphics, while Kaitlyn used scratch art to create the face of a tiger. Melissa O’Donnell’s second-graders at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District engaged in the art of debate during the class’ annual Writing Celebration on April 7th. The assignment began weeks prior with the reading of “The Stories Julian Tells,” a book series by Ann Cameron that presents a range of characters with unique personalities. Afterward, the students wrote reports that compared and contrasted the characteristics of Julian,

his brother Huey, his friend Gloria and his parents. Employing their critical thinking skills and diligent research, they defended the traits of one character of their choosing during brief debates delivered in pairs. Weeks of preparation and practice led up to debate day. Those with differing opinions were partnered up to defend their argument with evidence from the book, demonstrate respect for their partner’s viewpoint by not speaking over them, and perfect their delivery

technique by maintaining good eye contact. As the students debated, family members, teachers and administrators rotated among the groups to hear how they were validating their claims. Following the debates, the students enjoyed a spring party with a lighthearted craft activity. Assisted by PTA parents, they created bird feeders by dipping ice cream cones in jelly, covering them with birdseed and stringing them with yarn so they could be hung outdoors.

Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students in Bellmore enjoyed ways to nurture the planet during the school’s annual Earth Day celebration. Kindergarten students kicked off the celebration with a recycled hat parade. They recited the Earth Day pledge during a gathering in the auditorium, where they sang, under the direction of music teacher Randi Andersen, the “Reinhard Song,” “Spring is Here,” “Spring has Sprung” and “This Land is

Your Land.” Nassau County Legislator Steven Rhoads was also in attendance and told the students they are responsible for the planet. “Earth Day teaches us that you have the power to make a difference in the world around you,” he said. Andraya Givargis, a sixth-grader at W.T. Clarke Middle School in the East Meadow School District, accepted the title of school principal on April 21st as part of the school’s “Principal for a Day” fundraiser. Organized by the school’s Change 4 Change

club, sixththrough eighth-grade students entered the contest for the chance to serve as school principal by purchasing $1 raffle tickets. The Principal for a Day program raised more than $200. With Principal Stacy Breslin at her side, Andraya spent the day

conducting the morning announcements, attending meetings with faculty, visiting classrooms to observe student learning and promoting educational excellence throughout the building. Change 4 Change is a student-driven service club in which members develop creative fundraising projects and competitions throughout the year. During a culminating assembly at the end of May, the members distribute funds raised from the year to causes of their choosing. Best Artists The artwork of Division Avenue High School students Lobna Bayoumy and Salia Soeun-Thol and MacArthur High School student Kamilla Tlemissova were three of 84 pieces selected for exhibition in the annual Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum exhibit. The annual arts-ineducation initiative is a juried exhibition that offers students the opportunity to exhibit their art in a museum setting. Students in grades

9-12 are invited to create a work of art in various media based on artwork shown in the Heckscher Museum of Art during the current school year. This year, students from 56 high schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties submitted 387 works of art for competition. Lobna entered her artwork titled “An American Eclipse,” inspired by Americans’ fears regarding the election and their future under president Trump. Salia’s artwork, titled “King and

Queen,” was inspired by friends who are part of the LGBT community. In addition, Kamilla’s oil painting titled “Competitive World” received the Achievement Award in Painting and the Joseph Mack Achievement Award. Joseph Mack was founder of Huntington Fine Arts, and the award includes six free classes and a gift card for art supplies. Artifacts Unveiled Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Education Center Key Club Vice President José Heras and adviser Lillian Creedon unveiled a 9/11 sculpture for the Levittown community during the April 19th board of education meeting. The sculpture is displayed at the Levittown Memorial Education Center alongside the Gerald R. Claps Career

and Technical Education Center’s quilt, which commemorates the 15th anniversary of September 11th. Both the quilt and the sculpture will be donated to the Levittown Public Library for display this coming summer. The metal artifact from the 9/11 site was donated by the New York Fire Department Fireman’s Training Center located

on Randall’s Island and was a request by Key Club member José Heras, who felt the need to further educate the community about this horrific event. After José acquired the piece, he and his father, Felipe Heras, constructed a podium. The community is encouraged to reflect upon this historical event upon touching the metal.

Among a sea of community members, faculty and students, the East Meadow Board of Education recognized the March and April “Terrific Kids” of Woodland and W.T. Frogs Make Friends The “Frog Man” came to Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District to teach students about the amphibious creatures. Along with some of his friends, science consultant Brian Wallrapp met with second-grade classes on April 25th. After reading

a book about frogs, he brought the lesson to life for the children by introducing them to Freddie the fire-bellied frog, Tammy the tree frog, and a pair of toads named Bert and Ernie. He discussed the life cycles of frogs and toads, the differences between the

two species, and their habitats. Students also saw a frog skeleton. Principal Eileen Speidel said that this program made a great connection to Writer’s Workshop, as many students have chosen to write about animals and other living creatures for their nonfiction pieces.

All hands were on deck at Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District on April 22nd when 100 volunteers, including One Voice, One Message ambassadors, packaged 20,000 meals in coordination with Rise Against Hunger. Teachers and chairpersons were hauling 50-pound bags of vegetables and grains. Students worked in an assembly line, funneling dehydrated meals and vitamins into bags. Principals acted as couriers from the assembly tables to packaging locations. Administrators

were taping up boxes full of meals and stacking them for transport. The superintendent manned a push broom, cleaning up any food spillover. “They [the ambassadors] are the most incredible human beings with the largest hearts that serve as outstanding role models,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mara Bollettieri, who is also the co-One Voice, One Message adviser. Money raised at the March One Voice, One Message Superhero 5K Run paid for the meals. Rise Against Hunger is

an international hunger relief organization that distributes food to the world’s most vulnerable areas of the world. “By sending the meals to schools abroad, the children will not only have a hot meal, but will receive an education as well,” added co-One Voice, One Message adviser and social studies chairperson Robyn Einbinder. “Students and staff alike were moved by the impact these meals will have, and thoroughly enjoyed working together throughout the morning.”

New Superintendent Appointed At its communications meeting on April 20th, 2017, the East Meadow Board of Education appointed Dr. Kenneth Card, Jr. as the district’s new superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2017. Dr. Card joins the district with more than 14 years of experience as a district and schoolbased leader, most recently serving as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Huntington School District for the past seven years. His past experience also includes serving as principal at Woodhull Intermediate School in Huntington, and an assistant principal and social studies teacher in the Harborfields Central School District. Dr. Card also currently serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the School of Education at LIU Post and as an adjunct

instructor at the School of Education at SUNY Old Westbury. He is a visionary leader in a K-12 setting and has extensive experience in strategic planning and resource development, a deep dedication to academic excellence and a passion for preparing students for productive and successful lives. “Dr. Card is highly regarded and respected in the educational community and described by his peers as a creative thinker, a problem solver, a strong long-range planner and an effective leader,” said Board of Education President Marcee Rubinstein. “The Board believes that Dr. Card will be effective at connecting and communicating with faculty, staff, students, parents and the community at large. As students and faculty entered the halls of MacArthur High School during April, they were constantly reminded of the importance of coming together to bring awareness to autism, a disorder that affects many students and adults in the Levittown community. Art students created lanterns decorated with puzzle pieces, the iconic symbol of autism awareness, that hung on the ceilings in the main hallway. There was also a showcase of artwork created by the district’s Applied Behavior Analysis students. In addition, students and staff donned autism awareness T-shirts,

whose sale annually funds the Autism Society of America. Autism Awareness Month Chairman Vince Causeman said, “The more awareness there is, the more likely students with autism will be treated with acceptance, understanding and compassion.” On April 3rd, students and staff wore their T-shirts and took time to learn about autism and how it affects individuals. These activities were followed by the annual LAX for Autism games on April 15 and the second annual Strike Out Autism Baseball Game on April 22 against Plainview-Old Bethpage School District. Student-

athletes also coordinated workshops to teach the district’s ABA students to play various sports throughout the month. Dr. Tonie McDonald, the Levittown School District superintendent, said that the autism awareness campaign is dear to the community’s heart. “Children on the autism spectrum have a different world view and require different teaching techniques in order to reach their full potential,” she said. “I am so grateful for the relationships we have fostered with our teachers, parents and students to provide the best quality education for our students.”

City. This year’s entrants, open to students from Nassau County in grades 9-12, were instructed to write a poem that conforms to the syllabic and rhyme scheme of the Gaelic quatrain, a complex four-line verse using ancient Gaelic structure.

Judges considered the conformity to the structure of the quatrain, elegance of language and skillfulness of the rhymes in each entry. The Levittown School District congratulates the students on this outstanding accomplishment.
