Tackling Teamwork

Exceptional Artists graders Manar Mustajab and Madison-Lynn Hum. The event was held at Farmingdale State College. More than 1,200 unique and diverse works of art were showcased at the exhibit from students in kindergarten through twelfth-grade. Pazmino expressed herself through the visual medium of two dimensional art in

the style of artist Jasper Johns, while Mustajab and Hum’s artwork were two dimensional monochromatic zentangles. The students’ creative talents were developed under the guidance of Kessler in their art class at Northside to an exceptional level worthy of public exhibit.

As the activity continued, students had to move through the jump rope with more of their peers, putting their trust and communication to the test. They also played a game similar to Simon Says which challenged their listening skills and

teamwork abilities. The goal of the program was to get students to work together and learn how to trust each other in different and fun scenarios. Through the cooperative games, students had the opportunity to get to know each other better and problem solve through physical tasks.

Piece of the Puzzle In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, Bowling Green Elementary School students, in the East Meadow School District, collectively participated in the creation of two autism awareness walls at each of the schools’ entrances. Under the direction of school psychologist Robert Mueller and speech

pathologist Kimberly Mayo, the students learned about autism and its effects on others. Each student decorated a puzzle piece – the designated international autism awareness symbol – and parent volunteers decorated the walls with hearts, which they filled in with more than 800 puzzle pieces.

Patrice Dobies, director of special education and pupil personnel services, cited the importance of recognizing Autism Awareness Month in school. “One out of 68 students [nationally] is diagnosed with autism each year,” she said. “Everyone knows someone or loves someone with autism.”

Hard Work Pays First-graders became experts on different animals, types of weather and other topics of interest as they completed their “All About” books at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. As part of Writer’s Workshop, youngsters in Michelle Mittler and Tracy Kelly’s class learned what it is like to become a published author. During

their nonfiction writing unit, students selected topics and did research using books and online resources. Each child’s completed piece had to include a cover page and illustration, table of contents, introduction, conclusion, glossary and photos. The class hosted a writing celebration on April 18th. Children shared their books with their

classmates and family members. The listeners were encouraged to share compliments. “The children worked so hard in researching, organizing, writing, editing and revising their pieces,” Ms. Mittler said. “It’s important to celebrate and make them feel special. They developed such a love of writing.”

Three Little Pigs During a study of folktales and fairytales, third-grade students in Karen Reilly’s and Lauren Bianco’s class at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore collaborated on scripts, which adapted the popular tale of the “Three Little Pigs” to incorporate

leadership principles and core values. The students were split into small groups to write their own version of the tale and to create new characters, settings, tag lines, lessons learned and emphasis on a main core value or

leadership principle. The students utilized their Chromebooks to write the scripts and memorized their lines over a twomonth period. Each student was then recorded by technology teacher Lauren Pedone.

Moving Forward By way of background, the study and application of Zen is perhaps the most challenging to write about. Although numerous books and articles abound, there are many folks out there who know nothing about the subject. It is this group who is my main focus in exploring the power of Zen. Further, this article adds on to my second column (written a few weeks ago), The Art and Pleasure of Meditation. Let’s begin with a definition of Zen. Simply put, it is a different way of looking at life. It is not a religion, nor any type of cult. However, through the study of Zen over the years, many people have found that it brings a deeper sense of fulfillment, a greater understanding of yourself and others, and could be a turning point in your life. It’s important to note that I am not a Zen Master – merely someone who started my training while I was serving with the military in the Far East, and my studies have continued to this day. By delving deeper into Zen through reading, and continuing practical usage, the real meaning and application will come to you...but one must be patient.

Examples of Zen are everywhere: in flower arranging, creating a Zen garden; meditating; achieving a goal that you worked hard for; watching a glorious sunset...any activity where your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. To reinforce the Zen concept, I would suggest that you find a basic book on the practice of Zen. There, you will find a series of guiding principles that will aid you on your journey to enlightenment. At this point, some personal examples of Zen might be helpful... Weather permitting, late in the afternoon, I watch the sunset from my deck following a short meditation period. Studying the wooded landscape, I notice the wonders of nature abound; thirsty birds drinking from my bird bath, several squirrels skillfully jumping from tree to tree, sounds of birds calling to one another and the beauty of observing new buds forming on many plants in my Zen garden. After a while, I begin to feel an inward sense of peace. A while ago, I needed to put down slates in my lawn on the side of my house, from the front to the back, a distance of

The Power of Zen approximately 30 feet. Once I purchased the slates, I began to think how they should be placed. After a while, I remembered a Zen principle on life - that the journey through life is never smooth, with many twists and turns. Following that principle, I placed each slate in an uneven pattern, which gave me a nice sense of satisfaction. To help you get started, I would suggest finding a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. If possible, start with a short meditation {refer back to my second column on the subject}, then ponder the following questions: Who am I? Am I living my life to the fullest? What are my important goals in life, and how many have I achieved? How can I become a better person? What gives me the most satisfaction? While my work life pays the bills, how much time have I spent with family and friends? Do I still have time to “smell the roses”? The next step would be to self-examine those factors which might get in the way of achieving the goals listed in the above paragraph. For example, let’s take the first one listed above – Who am I? This takes into

account a broad spectrum, which can spill over to many of the others listed above. My personal example is as follows: Once a year (usually around late September), I drive out to the eastern end of Long Island where the beaches have already been vacated by the summer tourists. I jog for about one mile (on the hard sand), then rest on a sand dune. At that point, I ponder three questions: (1) Where am I now - in my life, my personal goals, my marriage, my job and my comfort zone? (2) Where do I want to be in three, six and 12 months from now? (3) What is my plan to get there? Space limitations in this column prevent me from going into further detail, but it should give you enough “food for thought” to start your journey. The practice of Zen and its road to self-fulfillment takes much practice and dedication. It is a process of discovering your inner self and, in doing so, achieving a more meaningful life. Like the journey through life, expect twists and turns, achievements and disapointments, but always stay on the path. Why not start moving forward now? Peace

Helen Zhang, a senior at General Douglas MacArthur High School was recently selected as a National Merit Scholarship winner in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. Zhang is among approximately 7,500 winners from across

the country and will be presented with a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship award. The program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships which approximately 1.6 million high school students

enter each year by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Winners are selected from the finalist group after a review of their abilities, skills and accomplishments. This includes evaluating each finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, a written recommendation from the high school, information about the student’s activities and leadership and the finalist’s own essay. “I’m surprised and also very thankful to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for giving me this opportunity,” said Zhang.

According to Singh, it feels incredible to have his work published. “I feel so accomplished,” he said. “When you write a book you feel immortalized. Anyone can just pick it up, read it and learn something from it. Abbey Lane Elementary School students in the Levittown Public Schools have sharpened their broadcasting skills with their involvement in the Abbey Action News Team, established in 2015. The news club of over 40 members gain valuable experiences, not only in their school studio but with outside professionals such as Leonardo Gomez II, a 1995 Abbey Lane graduate and camera operator for the Showtime series “Billions.” Gomez visited the students on April 18th during filming to see the club in action and offer camera tips. Gomez, who has served as a camera operator on a number of television productions, watched with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald and Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Todd Winch as the students were hands-on with the camera, teleprompter and reporting.

“This is incredible for kids to have exposure at this stage of the game,” said Gomez. “Interacting and creating a television show like this empowers students at an early age that you can create anything.” The club meets every Thursday to brainstorm ideas and write for the filming on the following Wednesday. Under the guidance of teachers Melissa Boos, Siobhan Schneider and Christine Yodice, members can sign up to be anchors, writers, producers and reporters for the studentdriven broadcast which is compiled each week in post-production by Principal Dr. George Maurer. Every Friday, Abbey Lane students watch their peers shine as the broadcast is posted on the Levittown Public Schools website, levittownschools. com. With the club being so large, students rotate

their duties each week as they write and report on sports, weather and school news. They also tackle various segments such as a cooking show, “This Day in History,” and Get-A-Voice stories, which highlights Abbey’s character education program. Being involved in the Abbey Action News Team allows the students to grow their self-confidence on camera, along with off camera, as they interview staff members and students. “I like interviewing teachers because I don’t know too much about them,” said fifth-grader Gianna Prisco. “After I interview them, I learn so much more.” Over the years, the students have visited news outlets such as News 12 Long Island and the A&E Network to gain further experience. They will tour NBC Studios at the end of the month to see a professional studio and all that is involved.

It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

in the Masters of Invention competition’s entrepreneurship category and will be presented with an award at the Long Island Family & Consumer Science Professionals conference on April 20th. Her product was chosen out of nearly 50 submissions. Her process involved finding a target audience, profit margins, as well as researching materials and adhesives. “I decided on felt and used a hot glue gun to adhere the embellishments,” she explained. “It then attaches via a clip or Bobbie pin to the dog’s harness.” Norton has been working with fellow educators to facilitate the district’s enrichments opportunities in Technology and Family

and Consumer Science at the middle school level, which includes Creative Coding and Introduction to entrepreneurship classes. During the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course, students can begin to explore career possibilities in a variety of business and professional settings. “Allison is a bright young woman and is just the kind of student we need in our entrepreneurship classes,” Norton added. “Her creativity and out-of-the box way of thinking will be essential in problemsolving and developing our class business plan.” Photo courtesy of: Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District

As with most theatrical productions, the annual Shakespeare Festival at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District takes months to prepare. “Especially now that we do most of it pre-taped, it involves many hands and a lot of volunteering,” explained English teacher and organizer Laura Sheridan. It also requires the generosity of people throughout the district.” The creation of a green screen wall will enable students to film larger, more active scenes from the works of William Shakespeare, she explained. However, it can and will

be put to good use for future MAP projects. “The supplies needed to create the wall and to purchase audio/visual equipment were provided through a grant from the Community Parent Center,” added Sheridan. “We will be using it to create projects such as PSAs for health class, newscasts for social studies, study aides for AP courses, etc. The possibilities across the curriculum are endless.” Since a mid-March trip to see “Julius Caesar” performed at Classic Stage Company, Sheridan’s Shakespeare class has been working on scripts for plays they will be using in this year’s festival, including “As You Like It,” “Julius Caesar,” “The

Merchant of Venice,” “The Winter’s Tale,” “Antony & Cleopatra,” “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Romeo & Juliet.” “The students have been helping me edit scripts and create stage directions and prop requirements,” Sheridan added. “They have also been working as my stage crew, creating props from scratch as well as from older props. They have also been updating and reworking costumes.” They have also been using MAP’s new Maker Space equipment, which was funded by the Bellmore Lions Club to create the three boxes (lead, silver, and gold) required for their upcoming scene from “The Merchant of Venice.” Students painted and upholstered an old donated chair to create a golden throne for King Leontes in “The Winter’s Tale” and they are currently repainting it to make something different for Cleopatra’s throne. “The students have also put together an intricate model of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, and they themselves will be creating a script and video about the history and workings of Elizabethan theater.” Photo courtesy of: Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District

When Family & Consumer Science teacher Sarah Norton challenged her students to become innovators, Grand Avenue Middle School student Allison Alvarez jumped at the opportunity. The seventh-grader created her own company, Bow Wow Bowties – clipon harness/collar wear for canines – along with an accompanying video presentation. “I thought this would be a good product because a lot of people enjoy putting clothes on their dogs,” Alvarez explained. “However, my pug, Rocky, does not like wearing clothes. Physics Olympics The Wellington C. Mepham High School Physics Team in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently competed against 18 Long Island schools in the Physics Olympics held at SUNY Farmingdale. The team, consisting of John Berry, Anil Bradley, Ailish Egan, Srikar

Indrakanti and Michael Osorio and their coach William Leacock, won awards in two events. “They received the third-place trophy in the Slow Roller event, where the team had to take measurements of two rolling objects that accelerated down an incline at different rates,

and determine where they had to be initially placed so they would arrive together at a set point on the incline,” explained Leacock. They also won the first-place trophy in the Physics Bowl, a game show style event where teams compete based upon their physics knowledge.

In honor of Earth Day, students at Bowling Green Elementary School in the East Meadow School District created a special rock garden at each of the school’s main entrances.

As part of the schoolwide initiative, every class read “Only One You” by Linda Kranz and then created their own colorful fish designs on rocks for use in the garden. Many students

incorporated themes from the book, such as uniqueness and the colors of the world into their designs.

imagining a dialogue between Earth and the world’s children. Students then assisted head custodian Robbie Lynch in planting a tree in the courtyard. Pre-K students planted flowers with Coordinator for Student Services Elise Cahill, went on a nature walk to look for signs of spring and made dirt cups using pudding, graham crackers, Oreos and gummy worms. As a special treat, the students received a gift of popsicles from Nassau County Legislator Steven Rhoads, who was on hand for the festivities.

Students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District had a unique opportunity to become informed and inspired about future college and career choices in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related fields at a fair hosted by John F. Kennedy High School’s science department on April 19th. The evening kicked off with a 32-team medical Scrabble tournament. “Students played a special timed Scrabble tournament in which bonus points were awarded

for STEM words,” explained Robert Soel, science and STEM chairperson. Hundreds of students and family members explored the displays and demonstrations of more than 50 STEM professionals and organizations. “Students from all over the district spoke with a wide range of professionals in fields such as electrical and mechanical engineering, marine biology, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, computer coding, cyber security, genetic counseling, environmental protection, solar energy,

robotics and more,” he added. Major highlights of the event included presentations by the Civil Air Patrol and the U.S. Air Force, as well as a remarkable coding demonstration by some of the district’s seventh-grade coding class students. “As our STEM programs in Bellmore-Merrick grow, it has become our mission to expand education past the walls of our classrooms and find every opportunity to connect kids with professionals, experts and mentors,” Soel added.

Nurturing the planet was a collective effort as Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center students and faculty in the Bellmore School District participated in the annual Earth Day celebration on April 20th. Throughout the day, the students were constantly reminded that they are stewards of the planet. Kindergarten students kicked off the activities with a hat parade. They recited an Earth Day pledge during a gathering in the auditorium where they sang “This Land is Your Land,” “Sing a Song of Flowers,” and “We’ve Got the Whole World in

Education Leaders The North Bellmore School District welcomed New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, Regent Roger Tilles and State Sen. John Brooks on April 19th to discuss school funding. They met with Board of Education President Peter Mayo, Vice President Melissa Cmar-Grote, Superintendent of Schools Marie Testa and other members of central administration. Ms. Testa provided a comprehensive

presentation highlighting the fact that portions of the state aid formula calculations for North Bellmore are not keeping pace with the actual expenditures. In addition to reviewing relevant data and demographic information, Ms. Testa indicated that the North Bellmore residential community bears approximately 93.4 percent of the tax burden needed to fund the district’s annual budget. Additionally, she spoke with the

education leaders about programs, and highlighted accomplishments and future goals for North Bellmore schools. “We are very grateful that Commissioner Elia, Regent Tilles and Senator Brooks took time out of their busy schedules to visit North Bellmore, and we look forward to continued meaningful and productive conversation with our state educational leaders,” stated Ms. Testa.

Winter Athletes Honored The Levittown School District’s top varsity winter sport athletes from Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools were honored during the board of education meeting on April 18th. District Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Keith Snyder not only congratulated the students on their excellent season, but thanked the parents for their dedication and support to athletics. “We would not have these kids if it weren’t for you,” Snyder said. “Your support has turned these

students into superior athletes.” During the presentation of certificates, the MacArthur High School girls basketball team and Division Avenue High School girls basketball and cheerleading teams were recognized for being scholar-athlete teams. Four students were also recognized as scholarathletes. It was also noted that the MacArthur High School girls basketball team was recognized as a New York State Coaches Association Academic All-

State Team. Individual deignations were also announced. Overall, Levittown’s varsity athletes received 16 All-Conference, three All-County Honorable Mention, 19 All-County, four Academic All-State, 34 All-League and two All-Division designations in basketball, bowling, cheerleading, swimming, winter track and wrestling. Fundraising for Literacy Four industrious sixthgraders at Birch School in Merrick recently created their own fundraising campaign, Bookmark$ 4 Charity, to help others with their language skills. Four sudents teamed to create and sell bookmarks in school to raise money for the nonprofit organization Literacy Nassau. Students Ava, Claire, Kate and Paula developed the concept and managed

all aspects of their fundraiser. They created order forms that were distributed to the entire school and offered a choice of several themed bookmarks, including sports, emojis and even made to order concepts. Karen Micciche, executive director of Literacy Nassau, recently visited Birch School to accept a check for $150 from the team for the money they

raised. Literacy Nassau is a Long Island nonprofit organization that trains literacy volunteers to help adult learners (18 and over) with reading, writing or speaking English. Volunteers are recruited from all over Nassau County and they are trained and supported by Literacy Nassau throughout the year.

Candidates Forum The Merrick School District will host the annual Budget Information Hearing on Tuesday, May 7th at Birch School, beginning at 7 p.m. Following the budget hearing, at 8 p.m., the Merrick PTA will host a Board of Education Candidates Forum, also at Birch School. All residents are invited to attend both meetings. Merrick school officials will be on hand to present the proposed 20182019 school year budget and residents will have

an opportunity to ask questions. Information regarding the proposed budget can be found on the district website at www. merrick.k12.ny.us. At 8 p.m. the PTA Candidates Forum will provide candidates running for the Merrick Board of Education with an opportunity to introduce themselves to the community. All candidates running for the Board of Education have been invited to attend this forum. This year, five candidates are running for

three seats on the Merrick Board of Education. Terms are three years, beginning July 1st, 2018 through June 30th, 2021. Candidates run at large; the three candidates who receive the most votes will be elected to serve on the Board. anywhere else in the world.” Nassau BOCES created the awards program to honor those who share the agency’s commitment to providing the best possible education – and Dr. Bollettieri certainly spends her days fulfilling this mission. In March 2014, Dr. Bollettieri helped to create a districtwide student-led think tank. Student ambassadors from the district’s four high schools and two middle schools now join together throughout the school year to address issues

impacting the student body and surrounding community. They also collaborate to host an annual Day of Service and fundraising run. In 2016, she also oversaw the creation of a food pantry, the Community Cupboard, which serves more than 40 local families on a bi-weekly basis. group’s arrival in Nice began with a stop at the Florian candy factory, where they viewed a candymaking demonstration and tasted many of the factory’s famous treats. “Strolling up and down the magnificent Promenade des Anglais, which stretches along the Mediterranean Sea, had to be one of the highlights of Nice,” said Toni McIntosh, the district’s business department chairperson. While in France, students learned how French perfumes are made at Fragonard’s factory and dined on tasty French cuisine. In addition, all students learned to play boules lyonnaises, a very popular French sport game. While in the south of France, students were also treated to a visit to Monaco’s Grimaldi Palace (also known as the Prince’s Palace of Monaco), where they saw the changing of the guard before heading to Monte Carlo. “The students enjoyed walking on the same streets where the Grand Prix is held every year while enjoying the opulent landscape,” McIntosh

said. “The views on the French Riviera were truly breathtaking.” Following Monaco, the group traveled to Milan, Italy, one of the fashion capitals of the world and a spectacular and bustling financial city center. They toured the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the world’s oldest shopping malls. They were also able to view Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” On the final day of the trip, students enjoyed a boat ride excursion on Lake Como to the lakeside town of Lugano, Switzerland. They had time to explore the Piazza della Riforma and experience Swiss culture with an Italian twist. “Students conversed in different languages throughout our trip while dining on magnificent foods from the countries we visited,” McIntosh said. “To say this trip was a oncein-a-lifetime experience is an understatement. We know it has created a desire in our students to further study abroad and expand their horizons.”

In an amazing trip over spring break, students of East Meadow High School visited five countries in 10 days, learning about and embracing many new cultures. The trip began with a bike tour of Barcelona, Spain, where they viewed the famous seaside locales that were home to the 1992 Olympics. Students also toured La Rambla, a tree-lined pedestrian mall that connects Placa de Catalunya with the Christopher Columbus Monument at Port Vell. There, they used their language skills to converse with the locals. The group then visited Parc Guell, culminating with a specialized tour of the Basilica Sagrada Familia, created by famous architect Antoni Gaudi. This proved to be a highlight of the group’s stay in Barcelona. Next, the students crossed the Pyrenees into France and explored the Medieval city of Carcassonne. Traveling to the south of France, they strolled through the Pont du Gard, a well-preserved Roman aqueduct. The
