Free Senior Activities

At the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore, the Rising Star Leaders are learning about continuous improvement in physical education. The students recently participated in the Healthy Plate Supermarket Challenge, where they learned that a balanced diet is important to overall health. After each physical education class reviewed the five food groups, students worked in groups to plan a healthy plate of food. However, the students had to run laps to earn

funds to purchase the food at the supermarket. The students synergized and using teamwork decided what foods to select for their healthy plate and how much “Reinhard money” they needed and the number of laps needed to run. Students also learned to breathe and stretch through the yoga club program, under the direction of instructor Dawn Billeci. During the four-week program, interested students participated during recess, building stamina and

learning relax and focus. Instructor Kristen Fonte also led the students in a fun-filled Zumba workout. Zumba is an exercise program created by Columbian dancer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, which involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic music. Ms. Fonte said the purpose of the class was to show the students that exercise can be fun, and many of the students took on leadership roles as they assisted in teaching Zumba dance moves.

Robbie Levine Foundation The Shore Road School’s student council raised $901 for the Robbie Levine Foundation during a Valentine’s Day sale. The goal of the Robbie Levine Foundation is to increase awareness of the importance and need for automated external defibrillators at schools

and during youth sporting events. The foundation was created to honor the memory of Robbie Levine, who died of cardiac arrest during little league practice. An AED could have saved Robbie’s life, if available at the time of his death in 2005. On March 11, Jill Levine

visited the student council members and collected the money raised for the foundation. Ms. Levine explained the foundation’s goals and thanked the students for their generous donation, which will buy an AED for a North Shore sports team.

Coding By Color Abbey Lane Elementary School third graders in Lynn Dionisio’s class from the Levittown Public Schools were introduced to the basics of coding with Ozobots on April 10. Facilitated by Corie Cosgrove, district technology specialist, the students worked in small groups with the pocketsized robots which have the ability to change color, follow student-made paths and change direction and speed based on color coding. Cosgrove walked students through how the Ozobot operates and then asked them to create their

own black coding paths on paper using Ozobot markers. Students had to pay close attention to detail to make their paths the correct size. The third graders then watched their tiny robot follow the marker lines. Afterwards, Cosgrove instructed the students to get creative and add their own color codes based on different coding examples. The students watched in amazement as their bots changed direction and speed with the color variations they made in the path. Many students also collaborated with their fellow peers and put their

paths together to see what the Ozobot would do. The interactive science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics lesson helped students build their 21st century learning skills through creative thinking, problem solving and more. With coding gaining in popularity, Cosgrove has been visiting elementary students throughout the Levittown Public Schools to showcase the Ozobots. “I think it was cool and I would definitely want to do it again,” said Abbey Lane third grader Rylee Barbe.

An Evening of Excellence It was an evening of recognition by the Levittown Public Schools’ Board of Education and administration at its March 13 board meeting. The festivities began with a preview of three songs from Division Avenue High School’s annual musical production. The Division Avenue Show People will be presenting “Thoroughly Modern Millie” on April 4, 5 and 6 and had the opportunity to showcase their talents for the audience with a special sneak peek. Fifth-graders from Northside Elementary School, along with their teachers and Principal Frank Mortillaro, then gave

an interactive presentation on departmentalization and flexible seating. A pilot program this year at the elementary level, students shared how much they loved the new whiteboard desks, as well as the advantages to being able to move your desks and chairs so easily. Teachers echoed the sentiments saying that it really changed the way they were able to structure a lesson. Recognitions for the evening included MacArthur High School Principal Joseph Sheehan and District Athletic Director Keith Snyder honoring this year’s MacArthur varsity cheerleading team for

placing third in the nation and first in Nassau County. The board of education and administration also recognized this year’s PTA Leaders, including those who served on the Budget Committee, the Food Services Committee and as council board and presidents. Let's Make Dirty Rice Dirty Rice is a fun and variant rice dish, with plenty of room for improvisation. Even better, you can make a vegan version or incorporate sausage into the dish. What You Will Need

1 cup White Rice 1 generous dash of turmeric 1 dash of black pepper 1 dash of sea salt Finely chopped half red pepper Finely chopped half green pepper Finely chopped portabello mushrooms 1/4 cup lentils 1/4 cup black eyed peas 1/2 cup green peas Finely chopped sausage (whatever kind you prefer) to taste (optional)

Preparation Soak lentils and black eyed peas together in a medium stovetop pot of tepid water for 30 minutes to soften them. Then rinse them and place them in fresh water, letting them simmer on medium heat for approx. 45 minutes or until they are soft, but still intact. Set aside and cover to retain heat. Boil and then simmer rice, according

to box instructions. Rice typically boils vigorously for 1 minute and then simmers on low heat with a closed lid for approx. 25 minutes. Chop up all veggies and steam on the stove top until they are all tender, yet firm. Add and mix turmeric, black pepper and salt into rice as it is cooking. Rice should turn yellow. Microwave frozen, steam-able green peas for speed. Add all vegetables, along with lentils and black eyed peas, into the rice and stir. If desired, cut up your sausage into round disked slices and then cut those slices into fourths. If pre-cooked, add into rice mixture. If not, cook first and then add. Let entire rice mixture continue to heat on low heat with lid, on the stove top for 20 more minutes, and enjoy! Even When You Think You Can’t “It is your decisions, and not your conditions, that determine your destiny.” - Tony Robbins This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee. When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again. I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps

(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?” I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.” I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made. I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly

come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles. I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly. We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great. At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

Students Present “Peter Pan” Winthrop Avenue School students in Bellmore demonstrated their leadership in fine arts with the presentation of “Peter Pan,” under the direction of teachers Stacey Reiner and Annie Craine. The combined cast of third-grade students delivered a flawless and entertaining production of the beloved story of a spirited and mischievous boy who never wants to grow up and the mythical island of Neverland, populated by mermaids, fairies, pirates

and natives. Ms. Reiner explained that the students started working on the play in November, focusing on the leadership principles and core values to develop life skills needed to be best versions of themselves. Many of the core values and leadership principles were incorporated into the dialogue of the script. The students were proactive in memorizing their lines and practicing their body movements, volume and intonation.

The entire process taught them to synergize by working as a team, become more empathetic and how to continually improve themselves and their performances. “The students started off as two classes taking on their individual roles, and soon became fast friends who encouraged and looked out for each other,” Ms. Reiner said. “We are so proud of their efforts and everything they accomplished.”

Although BACA Members have witnessed how well their process works for many years, no one needs to take their word for it any longer because a four year independent study by professionals in the field, recently revealed that BACA children achieve “statistically significant improvements” in all behavioral and emotional categories. This greatly contributes to expediting the overall healing of the child on many levels, so their fear is quickly replaced with confidence. This conclusive study was published in the International Journal of “Evaluation and Program Planning” and can be found in its entirety on the BACA website. To date, their success with abused children has enabled BACA to spread to 17 countries, 47 states and thousands of members. If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a Cleared Supporter, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance. The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant than money. Their payment is seeing first hand how their involvement empowers children and contributes to their
