Town of Hempstead officials recently honored W.T. Clarke High School Rams wrestlers Jordan Soriano, Justin Soriano and Jack Forte with citations for their performance at the 2022 NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships. Jordan Soriano became the school’s first New York State wrestling champion,

while Justin Soriano and Forte earned thirdplace honors at the state tournament on Feb. 26. Town Councilman Thomas Muscarella, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Town Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll also commended the Rams’ wrestling team for placing fifth overall in the tournament, which

marks the highest finish in the school’s history. “Life is about accomplishments, and I’m really amazed by what you guys achieved,” Muscarella said to the Rams’ wrestling team. “It’s very important that you continue to pursue excellence and to keep the passion going.”

East Meadow High School Celebrates ‘Champions’

Twenty-one East Meadow High School students were honored for demonstrating exemplary character and conduct during the school’s annual Breakfast of Champions ceremony on March 23. Honorees were recognized by their parents, teachers and administrators for displaying admirable character traits and positive qualities both in, and outside of the school community. An East Meadow Champion is one who thinks of others

and makes consistent positive contributions to his or her surroundings. Students in Brad Seidman’s Leadership II classes at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have collected a variety of prom dresses, to be distributed to

local high school students in need. The drive yielded 150 items and now the students are working with the local chapter of Becca’s Closet to get these dressed into the hands of deserving fellow

students. For All Town Of Hempstead Pools, Beaches And Bays Town beaches don’t open for another two months, but it’s never too early to start assembling our lifeguard team! We always have the best lifeguards on Long Island, and we’re excited to bring back many of our longtime team members and welcome some new faces as well. Being a Town of Hempstead lifeguard is no “day at the beach.” In addition to keeping swimmers safe, our lifeguards took on additional responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also were tasked with keeping an eye out for sharks, which came dangerously close to our shores on multiple occasions. Lifequards start at $18 an

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-proﬁt organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker. The goal is adoption for 28 percent. On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identiﬁcation and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certiﬁcations in parenting skills. Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reuniﬁcation for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families. The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest. Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulﬁlling lives. used ready-to-wear suits, jackets, dresses, skirts and blouses which will be donated to Dress for Success Brookhaven. This organization was created to empower women throughout Long Island to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support,

professional attire and the necessary development tools to enable women to thrive at work and in life. Since its inception in 1999, Dress for Success Brookhaven has assisted more than 5,000 women returning to the work force by providing appropriate business clothing.

Levittown Girls Get Dressed For The Occasion At Prom Boutique

More than 180 girls throughout the Levittown Public School District chose a perfect dress for their upcoming proms and dances thanks to the Prom Boutique that offers dresses and other essentials for all. Organized by Levittown social workers, all dresses, shoes, jewelry and more

are donated and set up for visitors to browse. The boutique, which is housed annually at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, also features makeshift changing rooms. Guests and volunteers included students and social workers from General Douglas MacArthur and Division

Avenue high schools and Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools. Donations of dresses and more are thanks to Bridesmaids Dresses, Jovani, Debra Cattani from the L.I. Volunteer Center and from individuals throughout the community.

Wisdom Lane Middle School Science Olympiad Team Wins First Place The Science Olympiad team at Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown Public School District nabbed first place for the first time in team history at the New York State Regional Tournament. The Science Olympiad team has qualified for the state competition for the

past 18 years, but this is their first first-place win at the regional level. Before the competition, students prepared in class, before school and during their lunch periods. They answered questions in science-related categories, such as Rocks and Minerals, Electric Wright Stuff and Dynamic Planet.

The team is comprised of all eighth graders, including Ashley Agatep, Agampreet Baidwan, Jefferson Biener, Riley Cunningham, Joseph Gallo, Nish Keer, Robert Martinez III, Haley Pedrick, Keira Quigley, Taranpreet Rathor, Mackenzie Restivo, Helen Salib, Shruthika Veeravalli and Lillian Velez.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
