n April 16th, W. T. Clarke high school and middle school athletic department held its 8th annual “Run with the Rams” fundraiser to benefit a local family in need and the W. T. Clarke athletic program. Organized by Josh Friedman, W. T. Clarke high school and middle school athletic chairperson, both races began and ended in the athletic complex, circling through the neighborhood with water stops managed by student volunteers.

The American Heart Association’s 7th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 15th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. More than 700 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. As I often do when beset with burdens, I took to the wharf down by the bay To view the choppy waters have their way. Five minutes passed, and my concerns began to fade; Nature had spun its magic, majestic and unafraid. Soon I noticed people in cars surround me, Sharing this comfort the scene implored. It’s nice to know there are others Eager to find a moment like this And take the time to explore. Refreshed and encouraged, I began to take my leave, And in the rearview mirror the scene began to fade; But the choice to come was a choice well made.

They were bold, beautiful and bodacious; and the over 75 unique pieces of “bra art” were auctioned off for a good cause on the evening of Thursday, April 14th, at the “Bodacious Bras for a Cure” event. Caregivers, patients, survivors, healthcare workers and artists from local high schools, the North Shore Art Guild, Brookhaven Arts Council and LI Craft Guild were among some of the designers who crafted these empowering pieces of art for the event. Others were crafted or inspired by celebrity contestants like actor Ralph Macchio, NY Mets pitcher Steven Matz, former NY Jets Marty Lyons and Erik Coleman, Victoria’s Secret Angel Lindsay Ellingson, Radio personality Fingers from WBAB, the NY Yankees, the NY Islanders, and the NY Rangers. The night kicked off at

the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, where these creative bras were all on display and guests were able to put in their bid during the silent auction. The reception started with former New York Jets great Marty Lyons giving the keynote address, sharing his personal experiences with loved-ones who battled cancer and thoughts on why fundraising efforts and events like “Bodacious Bras” are important in finding a cure. In the Merrick School District, all Chatterton School students strive to become exceptional writers by celebrating the publishing of their writing with their peers, teachers and family. All second-graders are excited to share their book reviews and encourage fellow classmates to read their book. Melissa O’Donnell and Daniela Vernice’s second-

grade class included a summary, their favorite part of the book and a recommendation to the class to purchase their own copy in their review. The book reviews included “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Kid Athletes,” “Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!” and “Mustache Baby.” Under the guidance of their teachers Deborah Cain and Victoria Ryan,

all sixth-graders created their own writing projects on topics of their choosing. Among the projects, students created magazines, cookbooks, autobiographies and picture books. Following their presentations, the students’ work was displayed for family, friends and classmates to observe and provide feedback.

Through Their Lens Across the East Meadow School District, East Meadow and W. T. Clarke High School students placed in two prestigious photography competitions. Congratulations to East Meadow High School senior Megan Floody, junior Michael Hartcorn, junior Jackson Himonidis and W. T. Clarke High School sophomore Natalia Reyes, who placed in the Photographic Federation of Long Island Youth Showcase. The federation is a nonprofit organization of camera clubs across Nassau and Suffolk counties and the five boroughs of New

York City dedicated to the enjoyment and innovation of photography. In addition, the district extends its congratulations to those students who earned honors in Senator Kemp Hannon’s “Best in Town” Photography Contest. Sen. Hannon invited all high school students within the sixth Senate District to celebrate their town and its unique qualities to capture “The Best in Town” among four categories including people, places, pets and nature. Inspired by the Sea In the East Meadow School District, Woodland Middle School’s art club created a mural for the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County in honor of their Life Options Adult Day Program. Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County is a nonprofit health agency serving children and adults with cerebral palsy, developmental and other disabilities. Among the programs and services offered, the Life Options Adult Day Program

provides adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to develop life skills and participate in activities of their interest. It is inspired by the “The Starfish Story” about a man who throws a starfish back into the ocean saying he made a difference for that starfish. Inspired by their mission, the art club painted a mural with portraits of program members surrounded by the ocean highlighting their interests in art, music

and community outreach. During the unveiling, Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County Community Outreach Manager Patricia Quinn, Life Options Adult Day Program teacher Maura Wachsberger and Life Options Adult Day student Nancy Pedersen presented the art club and Woodland Middle School with a plaque for their creativity, generosity and support of the organization.

Winning Big In the East Meadow School District, W. T. Clarke Middle School eighth-graders of Megan Denecke’s research class participated in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair in Woodbury. LISEF is a nonprofit organization that recognizes students in Nassau and Suffolk counties who want to become outstanding natural physical and behavioral scientists, engineers or mathematicians. During the fair, more than 200 middle school students who had

conducted research and in-depth experiments presented their work in biology, behavioral science, physics, earth science and mathematics to local universities, scientific institutions and professionals in their related field. Within the competition, two groups from Clarke Middle School placed first. Group one consisted of Sanjana Ahmed, Aryanna Adalin and Shivani Shastri who conducted an experiment about the “Effect of Wind Speed on the Amount of Piezoelectric Energy

Created by Rain.” The second group, comprised of students Abishek Ravindran, Min Chun and Arjun Panickssery, conducted an experiment about the “Effect of Different Man-made Barriers on the Amount of Coastal Erosion Caused by a Tsunami.” Among the students who attended, 18 of them placed in the competition. The district congratulates all the students for their diligence, research and hard work in the LISEF competition.

On April 16th, W. T. Clarke high school and middle school athletic department held its eighth annual “Run with the Rams” fundraiser to benefit a local family in need and the W. T. Clarke athletic program. Bright and early, participants of all ages

pinned their timing bibs on as they gathered in the gymnasium to checkin and register for the 5K street race or 1-mile “fun run.” Organized by Josh Friedman, W. T. Clarke high school and middle school athletic chairperson, both races began and ended

in the athletic complex, circling through the neighborhood with water stops managed by student volunteers. Training for the 5K race was offered to W. T. Clarke high school and middle school faculty and students.

Biography Day

Mandalay Elementary School second-graders in Wantagh celebrated the accomplishments of important individuals during Biography Day. After choosing a person of interest, the students researched information

written in books, articles and on the Internet, focusing on the subject’s accomplishments. They also wrote about how this person has influenced them, as well as the life lessons others can learn from studying this

individual. On Biography Day, students came to school dressed as their subject and gave oral reports to classmates. Some students even created Google slides to accompany their presentations.

One Voice, One Message In continuing its mission of unity and service, the “One Voice, One Message” committee within the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District held its second annual 5K Run/ Walk on April 16th. With a superheroes theme in place, participants were encouraged to dress accordingly. Race organizers Dr. Joseph Netto, school psychologist at Meadowbrook Alternative Program, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Dr. Mara Bollettieri, and District

Social Studies Chairperson Robyn Einbinder carefully planned and executed the event, along with student ambassadors. Proceeds will benefit Plan International, which aides in bringing clean drinking water to people in developing countries. “The money we raised today will truly go far in building wells for children in Africa,” said Sara Samir, a Calhoun junior and student ambassador. “Because the lack of water and sanitation is such a grave issue throughout the world, it

really is extraordinary that Bellmore-Merrick is taking an initiative in helping to resolve this world issue.” Dr. Netto also praised Dr. Bollettieri’s efforts before the race kicked off. “Her passion and dedication to the district have helped this wonderful event become a reality,” Dr. Netto said. Overall winners were Elisa D’Sa, an eighthgrader at Grand Avenue Middle School (20:58) and Alex Rogers, a 10th-grader at Sanford H. Calhoun High School (17:32).

In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino and the Gersh Academy are teaming up to host a special student art exhibit at Hempstead Town Hall. Today, Santino congratulated and thanked Gersh Academy’s student artists, along with their parents and teachers, during a special ceremony at Town Hall.
