MacArthur High School buddies spoke in the video about how working with students on the challenger team has inspired them. constantly seek new ways to show their support. “We try to inform people about autism, what it is, some of the behaviors that go along with it and some things they might see,” said Causeman. “Hopefully that will make them feel a little more comfortable when they come in contact with someone that may be on the spectrum.” On April 11th, the MacArthur girls softball team competed in an autism awareness game against Division Avenue High School, followed by students and staff donning matching autism awareness T-shirts on April 13th. Dressed in their light blue shirts, students watched a special morning announcement that was produced by teacher Bill Farney. The video featured the school’s challenger team, a basketball league consisting of secondarylevel students from the

Throughout the month of April, students and staff at General Douglas MacArthur High School have strived to raise awareness for autism, a spectrum disorder that impacts people around the world, including the Levittown community. Under the guidance of teacher and coordinator Vincent Causeman, MacArthur High School has embraced Autism Awareness Month for the past eight years with special sporting events, colorful hallway decorations and a T-shirt drive, whose sale annually funds the Nassau Suffolk chapter of the Autism Society of America. The NSASA helps families on Long Island who have children on the spectrum by providing services and holding special events. MacArthur High School’s goal to educate others has increased throughout the years as students and staff

Being Green The excellent sewing and design skills of Woodland Middle School seventh-grade students Briana Deakoum and Mina Papadadtonakis resulted in the eco-conscious duo’s election as grand prizewinners in the middle school “It’s Not Easy Being Green” division of the Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge 2018. The East Meadow family and consumer sciences students created

a multiuse bag made out of a sweatshirt, and decorated with an LOL expression with lights. The students received a $100 prize to share. The purpose of the challenge is to engage students from Suffolk and Nassau counties in real-life situations. There were six areas of the competition: Sew to Serve, Masters of Invention, Trashy Fashion, It’s Not Easy Being Green, Snack Attack, Let Them Eat Cake and Teacher Checklist

Problem Solving / Decision Making Many articles, books and seminars have covered this subject. In addition, some local schools offer courses like this as part of their adult education series. This still leaves a large majority of folks who have never been exposed to this topic, who would benefit highly from it. If you are one them, and would like to have a simple, easy-to-use method to solve problems, please read on... In this world of fast-paced living, with all of its daily turbulence, we are faced with a dizzying array of problems and challenges that need to be addressed in a short period of time. To name a few: • A host of money problems, including how much you spend within your budget and what adjustments might need to be made. • What to buy for a really good friend, but one with very expensive taste. • Whether now is a good time to make a major purchase, such as a house or even a new car. The following is a step-by-step procedure on how to solve problems and improve your decision making process. Before proceeding, I must caution you to leave your emotions behind (not an easy

task when faced with certain decisions that are near and dear to your heart). Let’s begin with each step in the sequence: Identify the problem. We need a new roof, but are not sure how to proceed. Should we buy now or wait? List possible decision factors. How long will the current one last? What will a new roof cost? Which models are now on sale? Check warranties on each. What store should we buy it in? Check any special credit terms. Develop alternative solutions. The current roof is beginning to have small leaks developing. There are several models on sale now in a wide price range. A blackcolored roof is always the least expensive, but several other colors are very nice and cost approximately 15% more. We have checked out several appliance stores and, while prices vary slightly among them, if possible, we would like to stay with the appliance store we have dealt with previously. All of the models have a oneyear warranty on parts and labor. The store we have always dealt with has offered a special credit deal with no interest due for the first 18 months. The other store (our second choice) has already stated that, if

we buy from him, we would probably “get a better deal.” Narrow your options. Clearly, additional follow-up was needed. We went back to the first dealer, who gave us a 10% discount on the roof tiles and offered us the colored roof tiles at no additional cost. The only problem was that he could not install the roofing for another three weeks. We went back to our second choice dealer, who could install in two days but made no further concessions. A decision was clearly needed. Finding the right solution. We ended up selecting the first dealer. Although he could not install our roofing tiles for three weeks, he was going to give us an additional cash discount and a special credit deal. This, plus the fact that we had dealt with him before, closed the sale. The second dealer’s offer was tempting, especially the two-day delivery, but we did not take it. As you have seen, having an organized flow of guidelines to follow when making decisions is crucial to saving time and effort. Of Weddings & Wandering Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a

difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Excellence Award The East Meadow School District is pleased to announce that it has earned the Association of School Business Officials International Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting. It is the 14th consecutive year that the district has received this prestigious award, which recognizes excellence in the preparation and issuance of financial data. According to ASBO International, the district provided a high-quality Comprehensive Annual

Financial Report for the fiscal year that met or exceeded the organization’s Certificate of Excellence standards, pertaining to the fiscal year ending June 2017. The Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was designed by ASBO International to encourage school districts to achieve a high standard of financial reporting. The award, the highest recognition for school district financial operations offered by

ASBO International, is only conferred to school systems that have met or exceeded the standards of the program. “We are deeply honored to have received this prestigious honor, which is a testament to our business office’s hard work and our district’s commitment to providing full disclosure and transparency in the area of finances,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Card.

Good Deeds Sydney Inger, a senior at East Meadow High School, is a recipient of the 2018 Good Deed Awards for Long Island Teenagers demonstrating significant achievement, excellence, effectiveness and creativity, and serving as a positive and inspiring role model to her peers and the community. The National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education of Nassau County sponsors the award, and Sydney will be honored on May 10 during an awards ceremony at Congregation Beth Sholom Chabad in Mineola. Sydney is in the top 5 percent of her class with a weighted grade point average of 103. In addition to taking honors, Advanced Placement and college-level courses, she is a member of seven honor societies. She also contributed to the varsity softball team’s clinching of the New York

State championship this past year. As president of Students Against Destructive Decisions, she has contributed to the growth of the club through a comprehensive peer-topeer education program, focusing on helping teenagers make positive decisions. Sydney is also a Peer Mentor, offering advice and support and serving as a role model for younger students, as well as one of the school’s 35 Peer Leaders. She also serves as Yearbook Committee photographer, and as a junior, was recognized as an East Meadow Champion; a student recognition program designed to highlight students who consistently make positive contributions to the school community. In her spare time, Sydney participates in the Plainedge Challenger Program, which assists physically disabled

students in playing sports. She also volunteers with the Long Island Harvest Food Pantry, an organization close to her heart. “Most people don’t know that there are residents in the community who go to bed hungry every day,” she said. Sydney will attend James Madison University in Virginia this fall and plans on studying graphic design. Guidance counselor Joanna Silberman described Sydney as a student who has confidence and self-assurance, and is mature beyond her years. “Sydney is someone you can trust and rely on,” she said. “She strives for perfection in everything she does, but with humility and confidence.” The East Meadow School District congratulates Sydney on this outstanding accomplishment.

Cheer Team Honored

The cheer competition season may be over, but accolades continued for members of the Wantagh High School cheerleading team, who received citations from the Town of Hempstead during the April 12th meeting of the board of education. During the meeting

Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Jennifer Keane announced the names of each cheerleader who contributed to the team’s third win of the Nassau County championship. The team also placed second in the New York State Cheerleading

Championship, held in Syracuse this past March. Most impressive, however, was the team’s ranking as 11th in the nation during the Universal Cheerleaders Association competition, held at Disney World in Florida this past February.

Nights of Honor More than 200 high school students throughout the Levittown Public Schools gathered with administrators, staff and family members for Division Avenue High School and MacArthur High School’s annual Night of Honor. Division Avenue held its ceremony on April 11th, while MacArthur held its ceremony on April 12th. Students were inducted into various honor societies, with some being sworn into more than one organization. Under the leadership of honor society advisers and student representatives on the stage, students were sworn into their designated honor society. Division Avenue High School inducted six students into the International Thespian Society, nine into the Math Honor Society, 23 into the

Tri-M Music Honor Society, 24 into the Business Honor Society, 32 into the Art Honor Society and 37 into the World Language Honor Society. Principal John Coscia commended the new inductees for their hard work and commitment. “I want to thank you for the dedication that makes you the leaders at Division Avenue High School,” said Coscia. “You provide us with a culture of the fine arts, the spirit of competition and the incredible academic achievement of a high quality high school here in New York State.” At MacArthur High School, 25 students were inducted into the Math Honor Society, 29 were inducted into the Art Honor Society, 31 were inducted into the Business

Honor Society and 56 were inducted into the World Language Honor Society. “This is a tremendous achievement, being able to have such high academia in four different subject areas,” said Assistant Principal Anne Rao. “We have 112 students inducted this evening but it’s really quite more than that because you saw the kids popping up more than once for being inducted into more than one honor society. That shows that their effort, determination and work ethic is recognized and valued.” At the conclusion of both ceremonies, the new inductees and their families were welcomed to a reception where refreshments were served.

Shining a Light To celebrate National Library Week and School Library Month, students at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District celebrated reading with some fun and unique activities.

History Comes Alive Students in East Meadow High School’s Civil War class, as well as members of the school’s Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and Model Congress, received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a three-day American History Tour, in March, that included visits to New York City, Philadelphia and Gettysburg. During the tour, the 24 students

visited Lower Manhattan’s Freedom Tower and National September 11 Memorial & Museum, as well as Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. They also went on a ghost tour and battlefield tours in Gettysburg. Sheena Rachel Jacobs, social studies chairperson at the high school, said the purpose of the trip was to bring history alive for

students and help them better understand the nation’s founding fathers. “[The students] came to understand the founding fathers’ trials and tribulations, their willingness to learn and persevere, and how they held steadfast to civic duty,” Jacobs explained. “They now realize how America became the successful democratic nation it is, due to our founding fathers.”

The season kicked off with the middle school productions, March 15th16th: “The Addams Family Musical” at Grand Avenue Middle School and “Bye, Bye Birdie” at Merrick Avenue Middle School. The following week, the high school students took to the stage on March 23rd-24th, featuring productions of the timeless classic, “Fiddler on the Roof” at John F. Kennedy High

School; Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Sanford H. Calhoun High School; and “In the Heights” at Wellington C. Mepham High School, marking one of the first high schools on Long Island to produce this show. No matter the school or production, being a part of the drama program is a life altering experience. “When working on a musical, time tends to move differently, as if the show exists in a type of vacuum,” said Mepham High School Director Edward Grosskreuz. “For example, when rehearsing and coordinating all of the various elements (construction, prop creation, costumes, lighting, sound, publicity, tickets, etc.), it seems like a never-ending process. Yet

when the actual week of the production, tech week, arrives, the entire company finds itself moving at light-speed as it prepares to present its performance. When the production wraps, it seems as if time had passed so quickly, and the feeling of that long stretch leading up to show time seems like it never existed. It’s a surreal experience. From a director’s standpoint, it is so rewarding to see the company bonding through their positive interactions as well as their enthusiasm for the piece being developed for performance. When the company is in harmony with the work, magic happens. With this in place, the company’s energy radiates from the stage and electrifies the audience.”

It was an evening of applause and admiration as more than 30 Wantagh Middle School students and faculty read original works and favorite literary pieces to peers and parents during the English Language Arts Department’s third

annual Word on the Street Literacy Celebration. Director of ELA & Reading Nicole Waldbauer described the evening as an opportunity to celebrate literacy and the spoken and written word. Some of the works read

Practicing Mindfulness As part of the PTA’s Arts in Education initiative, East Meadow students at Parkway Elementary School received the opportunity to stretch out on mats and focus on mindfulness and relaxation techniques during a yoga session with instructor Donna Coogan. During the activity, the students learned introductory

poses and deep breathing techniques that will assist them in keeping calm and centered throughout their lives. Ms. Coogan reminded the students that what mattered was their focus on the task at hand and their ability to breathe correctly. “Yoga gives the mind something to focus on and helps us stay

present,” she said. The students embraced the yoga techniques, including the cobra, cat, downward facing dog and extended side angle poses. Many of the participants had never practiced yoga before, but were enthusiastic about incorporating the exercise into their current health regimes.

Mauro is involved in Science Olympiad, student council and the Boy Scouts of America where he recently earned every available merit badge, a total of 138, from the Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council of Nassau County. At MacArthur High School, Zhang has had a successful year. Among

her many academic accomplishments, she was a semifinalist in the 2017 Siemens Competition, was recognized as a 2018 Presidential Scholar candidate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program from the United States Department of Education and was recently selected as a National Merit Scholarship winner in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Zhang and Liu are highly involved in their school and community, both serving as valuable members of class office and MacArthur’s orchestra, science research, Science Olympiad, and Quiz Bowl team.
