Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may ﬁnd that the beneﬁts of growing older outweigh the negatives.

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the ﬁrst time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

• Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

Officer Turner’s resounding message was that once an email, text or social media post has been transmitted, it is permanent. “Think about what you are writing before you send the message,” Officer Turner said. “Your digital footprint stays with you forever, even when a post has been deleted.” The students also learned about the dangers of chat rooms, cyberbullying issues and how to use privacy setting to better protect them online. Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are also needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

“Peter Pan” Food Drive Each class at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore was encouraged this year to find ways to help the community. In conjunction with their recent presentation of “Peter Pan,” Stacey Reiner’s and Annie Craine’s third-grade combined

classes decided to sponsor a food drive in conjunction with family performances of the play in March. Instead of collecting an admission ticket, the students asked the audience to donate a canned good for the price of admission. Through

teamwork and synergy, the class collected 100 cans of food to be donated to the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard, which serves more than 40 community families who depend on its services to keep food on the table.

Third-grade students at the East Meadow School District’s Meadowbrook Elementary School brought biography projects to life by hosting a Wax Museum presentation on March 28. The museum was created in the school’s all-purpose room following nearly two months of work. Starting on Feb. 4, students studied and explored biographies before writing a specific U.S. president’s biography. After becoming accustomed to the biography writing process, the next phase was to research and investigate a famous and/or historical figure for their research project. Upon selecting

the subjects of their biographies, students were able to begin writing and creating poster boards during the two weeks leading up to the museum. The writing included wellcrafted TDEC paragraphs. An acronym representing four different steps, TDEC is a guide for writing a structured paragraph. It stands for “topic” to restate the question, “detail” to answer the question, “example” of pulling specific evidence from the text and “conclusion” to tie the response together. The presentations came to life at the Wax Museum, during which students dressed as their famous person and shared information with families, friends and district officials who toured the displays. Subjects included Emma Watson, Tom Brady, Steve Jobs, John Cena, Lou Gehrig, Neil Armstrong and many others. “The biography project and Wax Museum was a great way to show how we celebrate writing in East Meadow,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. David Casamento.

Under the direction of Heather Naughton, choreographer Kim Davis and vocal director Jennifer Alessi, Wantagh High School’s talented cast and crew drew packed audiences for Dean Pitchford’s and Walter Bobbie’s “Footloose,” held in the auditorium on March 20-23. The school production kept intact the popular story about Chicago teen Ren McCormack (John Sileo and Joey Labo) who moved to a small town in Utah where he learns from Willard Hewitt

(Brandon Schroh) that rock music and dancing have been banned by local minister Rev. Shaw Moore (Carlo Tobia). Ren falls for rebellious teen Ariel Moore (Bella Ninivaggi), who is being abused by boyfriend Chuck Cranston (James Degnan). Ren develops a plan to upturn the antidancing ordinance, so that the class can hold the senior prom. The play’s success is also due to the efforts of pit orchestra director Dan Aviles, stage crew director Sean Naughton, lighting designer Maria Belvilacqua,

choreographer Kim Davis, business manager Courtney Prestianni and set designer and construction director Holly Romero. Prior to the opening, the National Honor Society hosted an intergenerational dinner for senior citizens in the school cafeteria, under the direction of adviser Kali Psihos. The students served a delicious meal of BBQ and entertained the guests with a raffle, prior to opening night of “Footloose.”
