Fields A and B are both fitted with lighting and bleacher and bench seating and fields A, B and C have netting to prevent balls from leaving the fields. Speakers at the ceremony included Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook University, John Flanagan, New York State Senator (2nd Senate District), Kathryn Michaud, SBU’s Women’s Club Soccer Team and Vice President of Sports Club Council and Matthew Graham, ‘11 B.Eng, past President of the Undergraduate Student Government and former member of the

Men’s Rugby Club. “It is important that the university provide recreational facilities indoor and outdoor for our student clubs to practice and compete,” said Dr. Stanley. “Stony Brook is committed to the total well-being of our students and by providing access to quality, contemporary and modern facilities, we are able to achieve these goals. On behalf of our students, I want to thank Senator Flanagan who was able to identify and secure more than $100,000 in funding to make these field upgrades possible.” Student Clubs that will use the fields include but are not limited to men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse and rugby and co-ed sports including ultimate Frisbee, Quiddich as well as archery and cricket. Field use scheduling requests for the intramural

competition-quality fields are available on the Stony Brook University Campus Recreation website. “These new recreational facilities will significantly enhance the quality of life for Stony Brook students while also helping to attract prospective students to the Stony Brook campus,” stated Sen. Flanagan. “I congratulate everyone who was involved in bringing this dream to reality and hope that all students who call SBU home enjoy these new fields.” “What made this effective was not the individual sports clubs, student government or student body working on this project independently but by joining together with the University’s administration,” said Matthew Graham. “Both parties made it possible and successful.”

She presented a workshop on college planning issues and services for students with disabilities. Parents learned about services that help students prepare for and obtain a job. One parent stated that when they attend any type of parent support event they feel that they know as much or more than the presenters, but that was not the case with this Expo. It offered a lot of new information. Parents also commented that the seminar was comprehensive. There were representatives and speakers not usually at such seminars. Many attendees asked for it to be longer so that they could participate in all workshops.

The Walk/Run For Friends of Karen at The Long Island Marathon is an opportunity to help children diagnosed with cancer or another lifethreatening illness. The 5K Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, May 3rd at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. The 10K, Half & Full Marathon on Sunday, May 4th at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Avid photographer and Wantagh native, Erica Glatt, has appreciated photography her entire life. Although educated using traditional film, she quickly adapted her skills to the digital domain and now takes captivating photographs with her iPhone. Last year, Erica’s images of Wantagh garnered four wins in the Wantagh Photo Contest and earlier this month, she achieved her fifth triumph. To mark the occasion, Erica was awarded $100 in Wantagh Chamber Gift Certificates, a one year subscription to the Wantagh Herald Citizen, a Commemorative Trophy and a Nassau County Citation. In both high school and college, Erica captured

images using film and developed them herself in dark rooms. Inspired by Professor Mally in high school and famous photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt and Annie Leibovitz, Erica took “every photography course” she could while in college. Erica enjoys traveling to far-away places like the Caribbean, Holland and England, and with camera (or iPhone) in tow, she’s constancy shooting pictures. Still-life, silhouette and landscape are some of Erica’s favorite genres, but this aquaticlover especially enjoys shooting closer to home at Mill Pond and Jones Beach. “I love looking for hidden areas that are less known” Erica exclaims, “it’s remarkable what you can

find when you explore.” Since September 2002, the Wantagh website has sponsored this free photography competition providing all with an opportunity to submit their photos taken in Wantagh. Winning photographers receive an official signed certificate and a Wantagh gift which gets better with each win. Outstanding Reporter

Wantagh senior Dan Parker, co-editor in chief of the Wantagh High School newspaper, won Most Outstanding Reporter at Adelphi University’s Press Day. Dan won the gold

award in this category for a portfolio of his work over the past year that included an article about Wantagh’s first Westinghouse Science semifinalist Jaclyn Onufrey, Wantagh’s first female wrestler Nyatasha Jackowicz and the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon. Dan received his award in front of nearly 300 of the best and brightest student journalists from 30 Long Island and New York City high schools. “Dan is a very talented writer,” Warrior adviser Peter Kravitz said. Kravitz

has been accompanying his journalism students to the daylong Adelphi seminar and contest since 2001. “He writes well about anything: sports, politics, school news and breaking news.” Last year, Dan won honorable mention for Best Sports Story. He is the 12th Wantagh journalist to receive an award at Adelphi University’s Press Day since 2009 and the fourth to be recognized in the Most Outstanding Reporter category. He is the second gold winner in this category.

Into The Woods

The Division Avenue High School music department presented Into The Woods, a magical adventure with a moral and political point of view by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, for three stellar performances. Director Ryan Nolin and vocal director Lisa Levenberg directed the two-act play, and the orchestra, under the direction of conductor Michael Bastone, provided music accompaniment. Narrator Matthew Brzezinski led the

audience through a journey of the dark side of popular fairytales including “Cinderella” (Dimitra Tzanis), “Little Red Riding Hood” (Brianna Chua), “Jack and the Bean Stalk” (Brendan Skillman), “Rapunzel” (Heather Robertson), “Snow White” (Lani Volino) and “Sleeping Beauty” (Trish Mollo) with a 35-member cast and crew that explored communal responsibility, growing pains and moral responsibility. The musical’s plot was tied

together by an original tale that involves a childless baker (John Genzale) and his wife’s (Kara Burke) wishes to have a child, a witch (Victoria Baquet) who places a curse on them and the interaction of the fairytale characters. Principal Joan Lorelli even lent her artistic talents in her role as the giant. The district would like to congratulate the students on this outstanding performance.

St. Joseph Hospital’s newly renovated Sleep Center was unveiled at an open house and ribbon cutting attended by public officials, hospital staff and members of the public. The facility was recently updated to offer patients a more comfortable setting. Official proclamations were presented at the reopening by Oyster Bay Town Clerk James Altadonna, Jr., and Nassau County Legislators Michael Venditto, Laura

Schaefer and Rose Marie Walker. St. Joseph’s Sleep Center provides state-of-the-art services for members of the community who are experiencing sleep-related health issues. As part of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities from AHRC Nassau’s Vocational Training Center in Freeport spent a morning reading to kindergarten students at Summit Lane Elementary School in Levittown. Mary ENTREPRENEURIAL CHALLENGE - Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos Cifarelli, Pat Kelly, Susan recently hosted the 2nd Annual Comptroller’s Entrepreneurial Challenge. 200 Oborski, Chris Orlando, Ed Nassau high school students participated in the event, competing for over $33,000 in Richardson and Jeanmarie scholarship and cash prizes from various sponsors. This year, student teams presented Rogers chose to read their business plans for the Plaza of the new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and were favorite children’s books evaluated by expert panels composed of local business leaders and business professors. and even took suggestions from the excited students. AHRC Nassau provides services for more

than 2,200 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The vocational and training center in Freeport provides community-based programs and services, as well as guidance and support for families. Principal Keith Squillacioti said the students enjoyed the stories read by their guests. He also explained that the acceptance of others with disabilities is one of the tenets of the district’s character educationprogram. AHRC Nassau community resources

assistant director Aimee Keegan said the AHRC reading program has an impact on both the readers and the students. The readers feel good about giving back to their community, and the event often sets up a discussion in the schools about acceptance and tolerance. “The children are inspired by seeing men and women with developmental disabilities reading to them, and for some kids, it may be their first introduction to a person with a disability,” Keegan said.

Holy Trinity’s principal, Mr. Gene Fennell recently announced Daniel Frumento of Valley Stream as Valedictorian and Kathleen Horan of North Massapequa as Salutatorian of the Class of 2014. Daniel Frumento came to Holy Trinity from Long Island Lutheran in Brookville. During his years at Holy Trinity he has been very involved in different aspects of student life. He was inducted as a Eucharistic Minister at the end of his junior year, sings as part of Music Ministry and is part of the senior faith leadership

program “L.I.G.H.T.s”. Mr. Frumento was Editorin-Chief of the yearbook and is also active in the Performing Arts Department. He sings with the Select Choir and was cast as “Adolfo Pirelli” in last year’s school music, “Sweeney Todd”. This year, he will play “Christopher Belling”, in the musical comedy, “Curtains”. Mr. Frumento will be attending Georgetown University in the fall to pursue a degree in Political Science with a minor in Musical Theatre. Education Partner Diane Berger, principal of the Children’s Learning Center at United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc., (CLC-UCP) was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala in April. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Berger represented the CLC-UCP, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. “The philosophy that drives our school is that each of our students deserve the best of what their peers in public school receive, and we are determined to give that to them,” said Principal Diane Berger. “We believe that CLC makes a major impact on public education by

being a partner in caring about students and directly providing the foundation they need to succeed. CLC is a special education school with an emphasis on the word ‘special.’” The Children’s Learning Center has been serving special needs children on Long Island for more than 60 years, with an annual enrollment of 250. Students with

moderate to severe disabilities from the ages 1-21 are served by a devoted faculty consisting of more than 200 educators, clinicians, support staff and administrators. Each year, approximately 45 preschool students graduate from the center and return to their home districts. Students receive special education and therapeutic services in a state-of-the-art educational setting that includes a smartboard in every classroom, music and art therapy, and numerous exracurriculars including clubs, field trips and special events. Among the activities

available to students are Boy and Girl Scouts, chorus, cheerleading, dance team, and a trio of ballet clubs that have performed at the Tilles Center. They enjoy special events such as concerts and plays, Homecoming and Prom, and embark on field trips including overnight camping trips, attendance at Broadway plays and museum sleepovers. The center’s mission is “to provide the highest quality services to the children and adults,” and a large contributing factor to the success of that mission is the CLC’s long-standing, mutually supportive relationships with Long Island school districts. CLC faculty works closely with district staff to assess student progress and plan for the future. But the partnership goes beyond educators and curriculum — the students get involved as well. The Roosevelt High School championship football team, cheerleaders and marching band take part in the center’s Homecoming Parade each year. The Carle Place and West Islip high school bands and orchestras perform regularly at CLC assemblies. And for the past 15 years, the Wheatley School has sponsored a student carnival for the center and annually invites CLC classes to join them for Wheatley’s Intercultural Unity Day.
