During this annual event, teams from throughout the Levittown community and neighboring communities scrimmaged against each other. Proceeds benefitted the Hagedorn Little Village School in Seaford.

Dancing For Autism Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be dancing for a causeAutism. Adults served by DDI are partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts for the fourth year to produce Dancing for Autism on Friday, May 15th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. The Week That Was Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s
highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this
kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

Big Things For Alumnus
Andy Friedman, a graduate of East Meadow High School, is doing amazing illustrations for major magazines and attributes his success to the time he spent at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). A member of LIHSA’s class of 1993, the artist has been consistently busy illustrating, painting, and writing. Most recently, Andy has written a book about art which is now being published. In the past few weeks, he has contributed a full-page illustration of Elizabeth Warren for “The Nation,” created illustrations
for Talk of the Town in “The New Yorker,” and has been published in a recent edition of “Fortune Magazine.” “I am and will always be proud of being a Cultural Arts Center (now known as the Long Island High School for the Arts) alum. Those years meant everything to me,” said Friedman, “I don’t know where else I would have found the confidence that I needed to brace for the ride that being a career artist is without all that was instilled in me while I was there.” Rae Raff, Friedman’s former art teacher and current Long Island High School for the Arts veteran
art teacher couldn’t be prouder, “I feel an enormous satisfaction and pleasure each time I hear from an alum describing their successes in their art careers. MacArthur High School seniors Sabrina Chasen, Mary Kate DiNorcia and Grace Shin participated in the 2015 Stony Brook University Protein Model Challenge where they were instructed to build a protein model and take an exam to test their knowledge about proteins. The students prepared for the challenge by utilizing computermodeling software, online resources and foam covered wire to build a model of a Ras protein, a protein that typically promotes cell division when a growth
factor is present on the cell surface. Abnormal ras proteins, caused by genetic mutations, stimulate cell division and proliferation in the absence of a growth factor and facilitate the development of various cancers. At the Protein Model Challenge, the students were challenged on their knowledge of ABO Blood typing glycosyltransferases. The ABO system defines one of the major types, which determine groups of people who can donate blood to one another.

School Tax Deadline As the deadline for paying the second half 2014-2015 School Tax approaches, Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin advises taxpayers of the payment options provided by his office. Individuals who prefer to make payments in person can avail themselves of the town’s two satellite offices, the mobile tax office and the ‘EZ-Pay Drive Thru’ payment window located behind the Hempstead Tax Office. In addition, tax bills can be paid by credit card or e-check, online or via telephone. Payments received or postmarked by Monday, May, 11th will
be penalty-free, as the payment due date of May 10th falls on a Sunday. “In addition to extending hours at the Hempstead Tax Office during peak collection times, our ‘EZPay Drive Thru’ payment window, located behind the Hempstead Tax Office, allows our customers to make payments from the comfort of their cars,” said Clavin. The drive through window will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th and will accept check and money order payments. Hours of operation at the Hempstead Tax Office during peak collection
times (May 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th) will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fully-staffed Hempstead office accepts all forms of payment and can assist constituents with account inquiries. “My office recently negotiated to lower the convenience fees charged by Official Payments Corporation for the processing of e-check and credit card payment transactions,” said Clavin. Electronic check payments incur a flat fee of $1.50, while credit card payments incur a total of 2.35% of the total tax payment (minimum fee $1).

The National Organization for Rare Disorders will honor Levittown’s Division Avenue High School senior Bailey Gribben at the annual Portraits of Courage Gala in Washington, D.C. on May 19th. Bailey is one of 22 honorees being recognized for bringing attention
and a member of the 2013 Racing4Research team, which took him to the Rolex 24 race in Daytona, Florida. “Through Bailey’s bravery and determination, he has grown to be an inspiration to the Division Avenue High School and Levittown community,” Principal Joan Lorelli said. According to its official website, NORD is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping patients with 7,000 rare diseases that affect 30 million Americans, or one in every 10 people.
Joseph Novello, Nicholas Portello and Dylan Tobie recited poetry in Italian for a panel of judges. Joseph received an honorable mention award for his recitation. Dylan also participated in the Gara di Cucina cooking contest and won third place for

The turf field and stadium were decorated with the iconic, multicolored puzzle pieces to symbolize autism awareness as district lacrosse teams took to the field during MacArthur High School’s third annual Autism Awareness Day. During this annual event,
teams from throughout the Levittown community and neighboring communities scrimmaged against each other. Proceeds benefitted the Hagedorn Little Village School in Seaford, which caters to children with autism. “Kids, teachers, community members
and families composed of children with and without special needs come together as one,” MacArthur High School Principal Kathleen Valentino said. ”It leaves you speechless to see how Levittown unites as one to help raise money for autism awareness.”
District Strikes Gold Wantagh High School Warrior senior editor Bianca Buffamonte and freshman reporter Grace Tague received Gold Awards at Adelphi University’s annual Quill Awards for excellence in journalism, recognizing the top high school newspaper staffs from New York City, and Nassau and Suffolk counties. Buffamonte was recognized for her reporting on the first
male students to compete in Sports Night and her coverage of an environmental rally in Manhattan this past fall. She is the fifth Wantagh Warrior editor in the past seven years to win an award in the top two of 15 categories. Each school is limited to only six entries, or one entry per category. Tague won the Gold Award for her poignant depiction of how she and her family were still not
living in their home this past November, 16 months after being damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Tague wrote a follow-up report to this award-winning piece in the February edition of the Wantagh Warrior about her family’s return home at Christmas after 777 days of reconstruction. The district congratulates these students on these outstanding academic accomplishments.
