The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for the Building Unique Dynamic and Diverse Youth (BUDDY) program. The highly successful BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic, and Diverse Youth) Mentoring Program was established in 2009 with $150,000 in competitive federal grant funding from the Administration for Children and Families, BUDDY addresses the critical needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, children whose parents have been incarcerated due to substance abuse. Despite the elimination of federal funds, LICADD has not only maintained, but grown BUDDY into a robust program that has to

Enrollment in the program has quadrupled over the last three year with 61% of matches recommitting to a second year in the program. LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program provides children with a positive adult-child relationship on a stable and predictable basis. The BUDDY Program’s goals are to enhance the protective factors in children of parents incarcerated by helping them to create predictable and attached relationships with one or more adults; promote and facilitate participation by underserved youth in educational and cultural activities that enhance their academic, cultural and social competency skills, build self-esteem and develop self-confidence. These activities provide

opportunities for our children to learn respect for diverse cultures, avoid unsafe and destructive behaviors including gang participation, bullying and experimentation with drugs and alcohol and to ensure that young people’s risk factors are identified and addressed promptly through direct service provision and/or referrals to ancillary services. This program further facilitates the delivery of a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated parents helping to break the multi-generational cycle incarceration frequently fueled by addiction. “We are so grateful to the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for supporting this important program. LICADD will continue to work with partner agencies to bring about increased support for these most vulnerable children.” says

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

School on April 7th. During the tournament, participants received hands-on experience as courtroom attorneys, arguing civil cases dealing with the issues of negligence and defamation. Tournament judges, comprised of attorneys and presiding judges from the New York metropolitan area, adjudicated the 22

Moot Court Tournament participating Nassau and Suffolk county teams’ closing arguments and opening statements. “By far, this year I brought some of the most talented students,” adviser Kate Aymong said. “They worked tirelessly, perfecting their presentation skills and studying their legal facts.”

Once Upon a Time Dressed as fairy princesses, kings and queens, farmers and more, Bellmore secondgraders at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center performed short plays based on the fairytales “The 12 Dancing Princesses, “Many Moons” and “One Gift Deserves Another” (“The Turnip”) for delighted parents and peers. The plays were a culmination of workshops

by artist-in-residence Lorraine Zeller-Agostino, who taught the students nonverbal improvisational acting techniques through the study of fairytales. The students read and studied fairytales, and learned to depict expression, emotion and choral techniques on stage. They were casted and then practiced their parts in the classroom and on stage for several weeks.

In addition to learning acting techniques, the goals of the program were to provide students with the opportunity to explore their creativity, learn cooperation skills, feel successful and explore the art of drama. “I appreciate how hard you’ve worked to acquire this level of performance,” Ms. Zeller-Agostino told the students.

Charity Fashion Show

This year’s Sanford H. Calhoun High School Senior Experience class presented their 10th annual Fashion Show for charity, raising more than $10,000 for Project Safe Motherhood. This would not have been possible without Sanford H. Calhoun’s own, Hadi Aziz, a junior, who introduced his uncle’s brave cause, Project Safe Motherhood, to the class. “They instantly felt a connection to the organization and wanted to offer a helping hand,” said

Principal Nicole Hollings. Students modeled clothing from local stores, Alta Moda by Josephine, Esquire Tuxedos, InMotion and Joelle Jay. Calhoun staff members modeled clothing from Saks Off Fifth Avenue. For three months, the 2016 Fashion Show interns, Ally Reilly, Kelly Grenham and Sophia Navas, diligently planned and coordinated the seamless night. The evening is part of the Senior Experience, which offers alternative learning opportunities

to graduating students towards the end of their senior year. Project Safe Motherhood is a non-governmental organization based in Tanzania that assists the government in empowering susceptible communities to fight the cycle of poverty, abuse and exploitation. The organization also helps mothers give birth in a clean and safe setting and gives mothers access to medical care required during pregnancy.

The BellmoreMerrick Central High School District recently honored eighth-grade swim champion, Youssef Ibrahim, who went undefeated in 1-meter diving season. Grand Avenue Middle School’s Ibrahim, who swims on the BellmoreMerrick Sharks team, won this event at both the

Division A Championships and the Nassau County Championships – including scoring a personal best of 491.05 points. At the New York State Championships held in Buffalo in early March, Ibrahim’s score was 80 more than the secondplace competitor. “This is an exceptional feat for an eighth-grade

athlete,” said Board Trustee JoAnn DeLauter. In addition to diving, Ibrahim also plays soccer for Grand Avenue, studies robotics as part of the STEP Scholar Academy at Hofstra University and enjoys playing the piano, fishing and ice skating in his spare time.

Education Partner John F. Kennedy High School senior Amanda Aronoff was recently named a recipient of the 2016 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education recently presented her with an Award of Honor for this achievement at the April 6

meeting. The award recognizes indiviudals and organizations that have had a measurable impact on public education in Nassau County. Aronoff created a student-run, anti-bullying committee at Kennedy called N.I.C.E. (Nice is Always Cool).

Blake moved on from her class competition to place as first runner-up in the regional competition and then finally representing the district at the state level. “Blake is enrolled in a rigorous academic schedule, a member of

Creating Art & Music In the Merrick School District, Chatterton School has created an arts integration model to enhance the current grade level curriculum through engaging and interactive art and music projects. Arts integration heightens social studies, math, English language arts and science curricula

for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders through art and music. Each class is split into art and music sections to gain a deeper understanding of specific content area through a variety of modalities. For example, in accordance with their Early Civilization social studies unit, fifth-graders

Life Members The Bellmore Elementary PTA presented 13 individuals with New York State PTA Life Membership awards during the annual Founders Day Celebration held on April 12th at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center. Honorary state memberships are the highest honor the PTA can bestow on an individual and is given to those who have made a significant contribution to the welfare of children. “You have all done so much for the students of Bellmore,” Beth Fingeroth said in her introductory remarks with co-president Natalie Molloy. “We thank you for your service.”

In the East Meadow School District, Barnum Woods Elementary School first-graders received a visit from veterinarian Dr. Katie Iovino after the class completed a unit on animals. Connecting their English language arts, social studies and science curriculums, students learned about animal

anatomy, survival, habitats and individuals who help them. Following their studies, Dr. Iovino spoke to students about becoming a veterinarian, places that veterinarians work, instruments they use to take care of animals and different ways animals protect and help humans such as serving as guide

dogs, therapy animals, police and military dogs. After Dr. Iovino’s presentation, students were able to ask her questions about the animals she worked with, the challenges of working with them and why she decided to become a veterinarian.

Shining a Blue Light Across the East Meadow School District, schools are showing their support for autism in recognition of Autism Awareness Month. Earlier this week, Bowling Green Elementary School teachers educated students about autism through Smart Board activities, lessons and literature about having a friend or sibling with autism. All lessons concluded with students

coloring and writing facts about autism on a puzzle piece. On Autism Awareness Day, SEPTA and PTA parents and members of the school’s social skills program “Bridges to Friendship,” volunteered to assemble over 100 puzzle pieces into a tree in both main lobbies. Woodland Middle School also showed their support with various blue-themed

The evening is part of the Senior Experience, which offers alternative learning opportunities to graduating students towards the end of their senior year. “It is a culminating event for seniors, like Class Night, the prom and then

graduation,” said teacher Lisa Scherer. “This year an extrodinary number of seniors volunteered - the most in years - and they represented all groups of students.” A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Camp Sunrise, a day camp dedicated to children with cancer and their siblings, free of charge.

Kennedy High School seniors converted the auditorium into a fashion runway to raise money for their adopted charity. More than 100 students participated in the fashion show, which showcased

Vet Visit Bernie Rader, World War II veteran and prisoner of war, recently shared his experiences with eighthgrade students at Grand Avenue Middle School. He served in occupied France and was part of a 55-man patrol from the 9th Infantry Division. Rader was wounded by mortar fire and captured by Germans in Brittany in 1944. He spent 45 days in a German prisoner-of-war hospital. He was freed in an

unprecedented prisonerof-war exchange arranged by Andrew Hodges, a young International Red Cross Field director. Rader is the recipient of a Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. In 2007, former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy presented Rader with the prestigious French Legion of Honor distinction. The order was created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and it honors soldiers and

Three C’s to Success civilians who have made a significant contribution to French life. Bernie’s wife June, and his sister, Gloria Katz, shared their experiences of sacrifice on the American homefront. “Bernie encouraged students to think about service to their community and country,” said Karen McGuinness, the district social studies chairperson.

In the Merrick School District, Norman J. Levy Lakeside School sixthgrade student Petros D’Amico received a Citation for his Courage, Character and Commitment during the Town of Hempstead’s March 29th board meeting. Lakeside special education teacher Joanne Savastano nominated

Petros for his academic success, determination and accomplishments despite facing the challenges of cerebral palsy and dystonia. During his time at Lakeside, Petros mainstreamed into his general education classes in first grade, increasing his time in class each year. Currently he has

mainstreamed into sixthgrade math, social studies and science classes where his 1:1 teacher assistant Janice Kleinman helps navigate the curriculum with various modifications. Petros’ hard work, dedication and diligence inspires his classmates and teachers as he continues to succeed.

Sharks vs. Jets Exceptional talent and strong choreography were a prescription for success during Division Avenue High School’s performance of “West Side Story,” which drew a packed house on April 7th-9th. Under the direction of Lisa Levenberg, Alice LoGiudice and Ryan Nolin, the 34-member cast not only closely rendered the 1961 award-winning play, but brought alive the popular story of Tony (John Genzale) and Maria

(Jaida Rivera), whose affection spurs additional unrest between the upper west side street gangs, the Sharks and Jets. Principal Joan Lorelli (Glad hand) also made a cameo performance during peacemaking efforts between the two gang leaders Riff (Domenick Napoli) and Bernardo (Phillip Downes) and their members prior to the school dance. Like the original play and movie, the production explored the social issue of prejudice

in 1950’s America. Under the direction of Michael Bastone, the orchestra accompanied the stellar acting with such memorable tunes as “America” and “Tonight.” The success of the production was also due to the efforts of associate choreographer Nicholas Alvino, scenic designer Brian Barteld, costume and wig designer Ronald R. Green III and lighting and sound engineer G. Scott Designs.

Make-a-Wish Request It was a dream come true for an international student who chose to spend a day in an American high school as part of her Make-A-Wish request. Esley Kok of the Netherlands, who recently battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma, was treated like a celebrity as she rode the bus to Sanford H. Calhoun High School with former Make-A-Wish recipient and current Calhoun student, Holden Smith. She then shadowed senior Meghan Corona as the pair attended classes, took in some extra curriculars and even attempted cheerleading.

Corona, who was granted her own Make-A-Wish in 2013 of meeting the cast of the popular television show, “Glee,” battled a similar disease and said it was easy to bond with Kok. “I volunteer for Relay for Life and have been involved with Make-A-Wish before, so I was eager to help out with this,” Corona said. During Michael Goldberg’s Sculpture 4 class, Kok passed out Dutch delicacies, as students gathered around her, eager to learn more about her culture and education and even a foreign language lesson.

“It’s a whole other world back home, as we have smaller schools,” Kok said. “I really wanted to explore American classrooms and see some sports.” Goldberg said Calhoun is the ideal setting for this because “there’s so much here for the kids to bring people together.” Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. This fulfillment was a joint effort between Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Make-A-Wish Netherlands.

Artworks Unveiled The exemplary artwork of K-6 students was unveiled during the opening of the 2016 Bellmore Star Arts Gallery, held at the district office on April 11th. More than 40 pieces of artwork were exhibited in matching gold frames, donated by alumnus James Perna. Under the guidance of teachers Michelle Block and Stephen Gorey, the students expressed

themselves through a variety of media and skills sets including mask making, watercolor, pencil and more. Both Ms. Block and Mr. Gorey explained the difficulty in choosing the star-quality pieces for the gallery. “I considered the student’s dedication to the arts, as well as his or her ability to follow instructions,” she said.

Mr. Gorey noted that there are so many talented art students in district that the gallery could triple in size. “I chose the artwork of students whose quality and effort exemplified the leadership skills of time and effort,” he said. Exhibitors received a certificate of achievement, and their work will continue to hang in the gallery for one year.
