In celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, the MacArthur High School Jazz Ensemble performed at a festival that celebrates the greatest of all American-made art forms, jazz. Under the direction of Joseph Romano, the Jazz Ensemble traveled to Herricks High School in New Hyde Park to participate in the eighth annual Herricks High

School Jazz Festival, featuring several of the finest middle school and high school jazz ensembles on Long Island. The Jazz Ensemble’s festival performance featured wonderful solos by Sean Althaus (trombone), Alyssa Breeze (tenor saxophone), John Deegan (trumpet), Grace Derrick (alto saxophone), Theodore Fiber (electric

guitar), Alexander Hertler (congas and drum set), Joseph Novello (timbales) and Jared Schwartz (electric bass). The guest adjudicator for the festival was renowned jazz drum set player, Matt Wilson, who offered the ensemble great insight on ways in which they could improve their playing both as individuals and as an ensemble. Wilson also took a moment during his critique to “sit in” on drum set with the band. Celebration of Music For the fourth consecutive year, the NAMM Foundation has named Levittown as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education for its demonstration of exceptionally high commitment to music education and access to music instruction for all district students. The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit organization supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants to advance active

participation in music. The district’s music program was analyzed for funding, staffing of qualified teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. Vincent D’Ulisse, the district’s curriculum associate for music, explained that Levittown schools have a longstanding tradition of distinction in music. The music program contains elements not found in other Long Island school districts. In addition to the traditional offerings of band, chorus and

orchestra, Levittown offers piano, guitar and electronic music, including digital recording technology. Extracurricular ensembles also provide enrichment opportunities D’Ulisse said, “The District’s receiving this award is due to the unending support of the Board of Education, Central Office, building administration and the incredible dedication of all of our k-12 music teachers.”

District Recognition For the third consecutive year, the Merrick School District has been recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. Merrick was one of 528 school districts in the nation to receive this distinction, which recognizes the outstanding

efforts of teachers, parents, administrators and community members to ensure all students are offered exceptional music education in their curriculum. The NAMM Foundation, assisted by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas, evaluates schools and districts based on their funding,

highly qualified music teachers, commitment to high music standards, community support and participation and access to music instruction. “We are very proud of our music department, faculty and young musicians for receiving this honor,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma.

National History Day Contest Levittown students from Wisdom Lane and Jonas E. Salk middle schools who are members of the National History Day Club entered research papers and visual presentations for the regional competition held at Hofstra University on March 19th. The Levittown School District initiated the club this past fall to provide middle school students with the opportunity for social studies research, and is directed by teachers Alexander Eichhorn and Robin Insana. Through membership, the students researched a designated theme chosen for its broad application to state, national or world history and its relevance to ancient or more modern

history. This year’s theme was “Taking a Stand in History.” In addition, the Cradle of Aviation Museum presented Wisdom Lane Middle School participant Andrew Kiphart the Junior Award for Aviation or Military History for his historical research paper “Bravery in the Face of Discrimination.” In his paper, Andrew wrote about the Harlem Hellfighters, an African-American unit who served the United States during World War I. Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

Lesson in Broadcasting On April 5th, several students from the News Tech Club at the Old Mill Road School in North Merrick visited the Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting program with their advisor, Deborah Walsh. The field trip, organized by Walsh and Mepham English Chairperson Mary Donnelly, gave the students an opportunity to tour the Broadcasting

studio at Wellington C. Mepham High School where BellmoreMerrick Broadcasting teacher Stuart Stein and technology assistant Matt Russell offered students an interactive preview of an in-studio news broadcast. Club members took turns operating the controls and the cameras, serving as anchors, camera operators and directors. The students, who use

an iPad and iMovie to create their own news packages for the News Tech Club, learned how to use industry-standard equipment, including BMB’s TriCaster, to produce a live broadcast. Stein and Donnelly answered questions about the Broadcasting program and invited the students to apply for enrollment in 2019 or 2020.

Classic Dr. Seuss favorites sprang to life among vibrant scenery as the Woodland Middle School Drama Club in the East Meadow School District presented their spring musical, “Seussical,” on March 30th and 31st. The spectacular performances were staged before large audiences of district faculty, families, peers and community Hundreds of musically talented students from the East Meadow School District took center stage at LIU Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on March 15th for the district’s annual music festival, captivating an audience of friends, family, faculty and administrators. The event featured performances by students districtwide, from the combined chamber choir and wind ensemble - each consisting of students from W.T. Clarke and East Meadow high schools - to the All-District Elementary School Advanced Bands, made up of young musicians from the district’s five elementary schools. Accompanied by the East Meadow High School Chamber Orchestra, the high school chamber choir opened with a stirring vocal performance featuring solos from seniors Erin Carlin, Juan Lucas Orozco,

Alissa Rojas and Arun Sam, under the direction of Dr. David Fryling. Dr. Fryling is the director of choral activities at Hofstra University, where he conducts the university’s chorale and chamber choir and teaches choral conducting and choral literature courses. The All-District High School Wind Ensemble followed with ballads by renowned band composers Robert Sheldon, John Barnes Chance and Henry Fillmore. The All-District Middle School Wind Ensemble, comprised of Woodland and W.T. Clarke middle school students, sustained the tone with a dynamic performance of their own. Both groups were led by Robert Dalpiaz, a 33-year veteran of the Brentwood School District whose expertise has led to several outstanding musical accomplishments by the Brentwood High School Jazz and Wind

members. A cast of talented actors and musicians captivated the crowd as they portrayed scenes and characters from some of the most popular stories written by Dr. Seuss. Among those represented were “The Cat in the Hat,” “The Lorax,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Horton Hears a Who.”

Poster Contest winners The Department of World Languages in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District would like to announce the winners of their third annual districtwide contest. Both middle and high school students submitted entries in poem, essay, comic strip and poster categories. This year’s contest focused on the value of learning another language through the theme of “Stay Connected... Learn a Language.” The top three poster finalists from each school were displayed at the district’s administrative

building to determine the district-wide favorites. Central administration staff voted for their top choices in both middle school and high school categories. Two Woodland Middle School students in the East Meadow School District earned third place at Nassau Community College’s 19th annual Science Fair, held March 17th-18th. Eighth-graders Brian Lin

and Noel Manalio applied the scientific method to conduct experiments inspired by this year’s theme, “Identity.” Participants were urged to create their own definition of “identity” and examine it in light of their chosen

Steven Corina, a graduate of MacArthur High School (Class of 2010) recently shared his experiences in the Peace Corps with Lee Road Elementary School fourth graders. Students not only learned about the geographical region of

Guyana and his residence in Upper Takutu, but about the various foods and animals and what it is like living with a host family. They even learned the similarities and differences in the way students attend school. After his presentation,

numerous districtwide committees, including the Social Emotional Committee. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and psychology from Hofstra University and two Masters of Arts – the first in elementary education with specialization in math, science and technology and the second in educational leadership – from Hofstra and LIU Post, respectively. “When Mrs. Bermas entered our district in 2009, she immediately embraced our mission of the beginnings of a bright future in Merrick,” said Dr. Palma. “I believe she has met her goals for nurturing a school where all students are supported to achieve their best.” As tradition in the district, building principals are asked to speak on behalf of assistant principals who are recommended for tenure. Before an audience of

teachers, administrators, family members and residents, Bermas shared the remarkable impact that Scott Jackson has had on the Chatterton community. Jackson began his career in the district in 2003 as a teacher at Levy Lakeside School and received tenure for teaching three years later. Motivated by his passion for educational leadership, he became Chatterton’s assistant principal in 2014. Along with serving students, teachers and parents in this role, he has also co-chaired the district’s Technology Committee for three years, with much success. His expertise in technology has brought several advancements to the district, including upgrades to its technology systems and the introduction of a new digital reading system. Jackson holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and a Master of Science in

elementary education from Hofstra University, as well as an advanced graduate certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. “Mr. Jackson has demonstrated an unparalleled level of dedication, commitment and professional integrity in his role as assistant principal,” said Bermas. “He has a clear vision of student success in which we work side by side to carry out new initiatives and ensure the growth and development of all students and staff.” Both newly tenured administrators were honored with bouquets of flowers from the Chatterton PTA and staff, as well as an enlarged picture of the Chatterton School building comprised of miniature photos of every student in the school. The meeting continued with Dr. Palma and the board honoring five

individuals as Merrick Stars, bestowing them with plaques. This awards program, established last school year, grants recognition each month to selected students, staff members and administrators who go above and beyond to help the school community, demonstrate exceptional character or conduct, or achieve a noteworthy accomplishment. Three of the recipients – Director of Student Services Dr. Salvatore Dossena, Levy Lakeside School thirdgrade teacher Dr. Jennifer Gargan and Chatterton School music teacher Dr. Richard Nasto – were awarded for having earned their doctorates, all of them from St. John’s University. “As an educator, one of the things that pleases me most is when my colleagues go and pursue their doctoral degrees,” said Dr. Palma. “We have three individuals

who have defended their dissertations and have been acknowledged for their extensive research and commitment to education.” Also honored with Merrick Stars were Chatterton School teaching assistant Johanne Georgalas and first-grader Sara Dashiff. During a recent lunch period, Sara had choked on her food and immediately approached Georgalas for help, who successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver. Georgalas was recognized for her quick response that potentially saved a life, while Sara was granted a Merrick Stars T-shirt for doing the right thing in an emergency situation. “Our district provides AED/CPR training to our teaching assistants every two years to refresh their knowledge,” said Dr. Palma. ”Doing so can help save the lives of our students in hazardous sitations such as this.”

Cheers and applause filled the room during the Merrick School District Board of Education meeting on April 4th, where two administrators were granted tenure by the board and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma and five individuals were rewarded as “Merrick Stars.” The evening commenced with the awarding of tenure to Chatterton School Principal Dana Bermas and Assistant Principal Scott Jackson. Dr. Palma spoke about the wonderful contributions Bermas has brought to Chatterton since entering the district as the school’s assistant principal in 2009. After serving for five years in this role, Bermas was promoted to the position of principal for the 20142015 school year. As a strong advocate for the students and families of Chatterton, Bermas serves on the district’s leadership team and participates in

Top Geography Students During the April 6 public meeting of the Board of Education, the district recognized the accomplishments of Wantagh Middle School’s top geography students Aidan Araoz and Kaden Ireland. During the annual

geography bee held at Wantagh Middle School on January 12th, Aidan placed first in the competition against 31 contestants with Kaden placing second. After taking a written test, Aidan qualified for the New York State Geography Bee, which was held in

Albany on March 31st. Aidan moved to the second tiebreaker round, where he was finally eliminated. The district congratulates both Aidan and Kaden on their outstanding accomplishments.

Cheer Team Recognized

New York State Senator John Brooks recognized the Wantagh High School varsity cheerleading team during the April 6th meeting of the Board of Education. On his behalf, legislative assistant Kevin Devlin presented each of the athletes a citation from the county. Under the direction of coach Matt Schneyer, the cheerleaders placed sixth nationally in the

Small Varsity Division II during the National High School Cheerleading Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida in February. For a second consecutive year, the team also won the Small Varsity Division I title during the Nassau County Cheerleading Championship and then took second place during the New York

State Public High School Athletic Association Cheer Championships held in Onondaga Community College in March. “We are particularly proud of the team,” said Jennifer Keane, director of health, physical education and athletics. “They worked very hard this season and their efforts have really paid off.”

Walking through History On the brink of Levittown’s 70th birthday, students enrolled in the school district have been taking tours at the Levittown Museum, located in the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Northside Elementary School students who attended the tour learned

from guides Irene Metzler, Geri Rabb and Bill Wilson that the community was built by William Levitt after World War II and possessed 17,447 homes, nine greens with shopping centers and nine pools. During the tour, students learned about the toys and games popular during this period and select students

tried their hand at playing the peg game. They also entered into a replica of a Levittown home’s kitchen, bedroom and living room and were shown housewares utilized during 1947-1951. Many students were able to compare their current Levitt homes with the replicated designs of the original models.

New Horizons After working on an engineering design unit, Wantagh Horizons program students at Mandalay Elementary School successfully launched remotely operated vehicles at the Wantagh Park boat launch under the direction of teacher Renee MacDermott and marine scientist Brett Curlew.

Prior to the launch, the students learned about density and buoyancy and then designed, sketched and built their ROVs in teams, using PVC pipe, bilge pipe motors, a central box battery and cameras. They had to precisely calculate the vehicles’ mass through water displacement and then add foam insulation in order to

make the vehicles perfectly buoyant. During the launch, it was important for the ROVs to float close to the bottom of the water, so they could be driven and manipulated with the motors. All of the teams were able to view the rocks, algae and fish living underwater.

Students at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District took their biography writing projects to the next level by bringing their subjects to life in a wax museum. Through Writer’s Workshop, fifth-graders read several biographies, and then wrote their own. Each student selected a historical figure or living cultural icon that they found interesting and became fully immersed in

research. The pieces, which were written as either an essay or a non-fiction book, included important dates and milestones in the person’s life while exploring adversity they faced and overcame. On April 6th, students dressed up as their subjects, which included athletes, authors, scientists, artists, inventors and politicians. As children from other grades and parents roamed the cafeteria, they could tap each “wax figure” on

Trio Earns Tenure

On March 22nd, Mr. Birckhead and his family visited Chatterton for the school’s Homes for Our Troops Assembly where they spent the day roaming the halls of Chatterton, having lunch with Carter and the student council and sharing Mr. Birckhead’s journey to Carter’s class. Later that afternoon, students, teachers, administrators, co-host of The View Sara Haines and Carter’s mother Robin Hommel gathered in the gymnasium for a special ceremony where Mr. Birckhead received the school’s generous donation. Kicking off the assembly, Assistant Principal Scott Jackson commended Carter for initiating this wonderful fundraiser and explaining that with the help of others, anything is possible. Following Dr. Richard Nasto an advisor of student council welcomed Ms. Haines, who shared her reasoning for being apart of this celebratory day and introduced the honored guest. Waving miniature American flags, students gave Mr. Birckhead a warm Chatterton welcome as he entered the gymnasium. Mr. Birckhead thanked Carter and the entire school community for their generosity to the cause. “I was filled with joy when I received the news of what an amazing nine-year old, named Carter wanted to do for a cause that is dear to my heart,” said Mr. Birckhead. “Words cannot explain how grateful I am for Chatterton School’s

actions and love.” Afterwards, students asked Mr. Birckhead questions about serving our country, living with this disease and what he is most excited for in his new home in Mullikin, New Jersey. There was not a dry eye in the audience as the assembly concluded with Carter and student council members presenting Mr. Birckhead with a check for $1,260 as well as an assortment of gifts including a piece of art work to decorate his new home, a red, white and blue knitted blanket made by “We Care Blankets” and Chatterton t-shirts and magnets for each member of his family. Frog Versus Toad In learning about the life cycles of frogs, Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center first-grade students in Bellmore met with science consultant Brian “Frogman” Walrapp and Tammy the tree frog, Freddy the toad and Bob the bullfrog, among others.

During the lesson, students became familiar with the creatures’ characteristics, including the differences in the shapes of their bodies, skin texture, vocalizations and position of their eyes on their heads. For instance, they learned that toads

have eyes that do not protrude from their heads, while frogs have eyes that bulge from their heads. The students are now viewing tadpoles in their classroom tanks and are recording their different stages during growth into frogs.

Courtyard Enhancement After the local Community Parent Center donated a greenhouse to the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, students and staff immediately began investigating how to enhance the courtyard area. Senior Jordan Ladd, 16, of Merrick wrote and received an $800 grant from Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation to help fund the project. “We used some of the money to build raised garden beds,” explained

Ladd. “The rest will go towards shelving for the greenhouse, gardening tools, seeds and soil.” The idea is to supply families currently utilizing the district’s Community Cupboard food pantry, housed at the district’s administrative building on Brookside Avenue along with MAP. “Right now if we can only give them items that are shelf-stable,” Ladd explained. “Fresh fruits and vegetables can be expensive and if you’re

already having difficulty buying regular food, that might prevent someone from purchasing healthier options.” Special education/social studies teacher Tiffany Rzempoluch and physical education/health teacher Karin McMahon have been advising the project. The Community Parent Center offers parenting education, support and resources for parents with children in grades kindergarten through 12.

Bellmore student Otto Velting was the firstplace winner in Shore Road School’s annual sixth-grade spelling bee, with Hayden Schneider finishing second in the competition. Fourteen student spellers battled it out on the auditorium stage for the title of top speller, with teachers Carolyn Acevedo and Kelly Popielaski as moderators and teachers Laurie DiMaina, Regina

Harten and Michelle Stein as judges. The competition was challenging when after eight rounds and the misspelling of the word “metropolis,” Otto gave the correct spelling of “vaguely” to clinch the title. Prior to the selling bee, contests were held in individual classrooms, and the two top spellers from each class were invited to participate in the spelling bee on April

7th. The district also congratulates participants Jessica Blumberg, Taylor Conroy, Christopher Field, Nicole Giordano, David Greenberg, Richard Ippoliti, Gabriela Mazzaferro, Christopher Panza, Nicholas Rinaldi, Skye Saunders, Samantha Schneider and Matthew Wallace for their participation and outstanding sportsmanship.

During the English Language Arts Department’s second annual Word on the Street Celebration, more than 30 Wantagh Middle School students, administrators and faculty read original works and favorite literary

pieces to peers and parents. Director of ELA, Reading and Libraries Nicole Waldbauer explained that Word on the Street is an opportunity for the district to celebrate literacy and the spoken and written word. ELA teacher Christine Hult

added that the goal of the annual event is to spread the love of words. “We study authors and meaning of words, so Word on the Street helps the students to appreciate the meaning behind what they read,” Hult said.

Collaboration was key for Wantagh students as they participated in Mandalay Elementary School’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) Day in the gymnasium. Under the direction of STEAM consultants Joan Soldano and Brianna Paul, and with supplies donated by the school’s PTA, students in each grade lent their ideas to the completion of specific tasks that honed the engineering

and design processes. “We are teaching the students to work collaboratively and are focusing on the engineering design process,” Soldano stated. Kindergartners and first-graders made marshmallow bridges that spanned six inches using the gooey candy and toothpicks. Secondgraders were instructed to make umbrellas that would protect a tissue from rain, while third-graders

STEAM Day made stomp rockets. At the fourth-grade level, students designed pasta rovers to create a lunar or Mars rover that travels down a ramp. Fifthgraders designed a marble ride roller coaster and timed each creation to see which marble traveled the slowest. Dr. Ferris, a Garden City resident, joins Wantagh from the North Shore School District, where he served as principal and assistant principal of North Shore Middle School since 2002. He previously taught social studies at Frank Carey High School in the Sewanhaka Central School District and is currently an adjunct professor at both Hofstra University and LIU Post, where he teaches courses in developing instructional learning communities, leadership and supervision, data informed decisionmaking and leadership in education.
