n a civics unit about community helpers, Levittown kindergarten students enrolled in Jenna Conrad’s class at Northside Elementary School are learning about the hard work performed by mail carriers. Each student wrote a letter to a classmate and learned how to address and stamp their envelopes correctly. They cut out and colored paper hats and pretended to be mail carriers for the day. Each student then delivered the mail to their pen pal.

Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but

just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and

explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in. I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

Frank Ohman, Artistic Director and Founder of the New York Dance Theatre, has announced that the Special Honoree at this year’s Spring Gala Dinner and Golf Outing will be Suzanne Farrell, former Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet and a former colleague of Mr. Ohman from his days as a Soloist with New York City Ballet. The Golf Outing and Gala will take place at the Brookville Country Club in Old Brookville, NY on Monday, May 5th, 2014. Making Memories On The Job

As the school year comes to a close, many of Long Island’s high school students are looking forward to a funfilled summer. For some, however, now begins the monotonous task of finding a summer job. Even though the school year is over, teens often find themselves hunting for employment for several reasons. For some, extra income is a driving factor. For others, they just want to make their parents proud. Five summers ago, when I applied for my first job, it was out of sheer boredom! I really didn’t need the money. Making my parents proud was a

nice bonus. Several years later, I still work there. In fact, now my brother works there too. As I am heading off to college, I’m not interested in working many hours. I would much rather spend time with family than pick up a shift. There will be plenty of time to work, but only a few months to spend living at home. Sometimes, work is overwhelming; it is rarely fun. Nonetheless, it is a responsibility that I have undertaken. Working teaches invaluable life lessons that will prepare me for what is to come. In addition, my job has

afforded me the ability to socialize in a new environment. I have made new friends, and the bond between my brother and I has been strengthened. Without a doubt, working has been the most beneficial aspect of my young life. I have never felt more accepted within a group in my entire life. Even though some of my coworkers are old enough to be my parents, we act like a normal bunch of high school friends. As we close out this school year, I am looking forward to a memorable summer. Hopefully, you are too!

The two runners up will also receive prizes. Contestants will bring their own ingredients to the cook-off and Cohen Children’s Medical Center will provide whatever cooking apparatus is needed to cook the dish. Preparation and cooking time should not exceed 90 minutes.

number of factors, both in desired features and also models that offer safety. Materials The first decision parents face is which material to use for the play set. The main materials used to build play sets are plastic, metal and wood. Plastic sets tend to be very basic and may be reserved for young children’s sets. While they can go outside, they may not last more than a few years and are often best relegated to indoor toys. Metal sets are some of the most durable and strong. They are frequently seen at parks and playgrounds. Metal play sets are often cemented down to a foundation for stability, which doesn’t make them ideal for a temporary set that will be removed when the kids outgrow it. Also, you cannot generally add onto a metal set. Wooden sets are usually a compromise between the two. They’re good for

backyards because they can be taken down when they’re no longer used. They can also be made more useful with addon attachments, such as extra slides, rock walls and different swing variations. Safety Play sets are designed for children, so all of them should be safe, right? Not exactly. Some manufacturers cut corners or create somewhat questionable designs. Look for recessed hardware and bolts so that clothing doesn’t snag on pieces that stick out. Choose play sets that have handles for extra stability while children are climbing. Avoid ones with metal hardware that can rust and weaken over time. Wood-to-wood attachments won’t rust and will be more durable. When choosing wood sets, be sure to select hardwoods that will not soften and warp. In addition, choose designs

that feature rounded edges so there will be less chance for splinters or injuries from hitting blunt edges. Be sure to have plasticcovered chains on swings and other moveable parts so that fingers cannot get inside of the links and be pinched. Check to make sure treated and stained wood does not contain harmful material, like arsenic, that can leach out of the wood into the surrounding soil. Some parents also may want to look for a wooden play set that is made from materials harvested following sustainable forestry guidelines. This gives parents some peace of mind knowing their child’s play set is ecofriendly. Play sets can be fun additions to the backyard. They come in many different sizes and configurations, so it’s possible to find one that will fit in any backyard.

Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn. Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable. Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn, and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun. A riding mower’s cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor’s cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds. Cost is the one thing that may deter some homeowners from a riding mower. While a walk-behind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers generally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and cup holders. However, some find that what riding mowers lack in affordability, they make up for in convenience. Plus buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two seasons. As with any lawn tool, it’s important to note that riding mowers are not toys and they should not be handled by children, nor should children be allowed to ride along while mowing.

Levittown studentsscientists enrolled at MacArthur High School have been making presentations and competing in regional

contests, including the Molloy College Science Fair and the Long Island Science Conference. At the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, two

teams of science research students delivered a North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Marvels presentation about hurricane preparedness.

The goal of the program is to encourage science, technology, engineering and mathematics career pathways for Long Island students in grades 9-10. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, the topic of the competition was hurricane preparedness. Jamie Aquilino, Tara Brophy, Casey Butcher, Kristen DiCicco, Julia DeVincentis, James May, Madison Kleppan-Mella, Shannon Myles, Michaela Napoli and Emily Thomas prepared a disaster plan focusing on preparation prior to a storm, actions during the event, immediate aftermath planning and long-term planning. At the Molloy College Science Fair, ninth and tenth-grade students Tara

Regional Competition Brophy, McKenna Foy, Thomas Rodriguez, Brian Knoebel, Alex Dempsey, Jason Russo, Shannon Myles, Jamie Aquilino and Michaela Napoli presented the following projects: Food Preference in Gromphadorhina Portentosa (Madagascar Hissing Roaches), Adolescent Knowledge of Nutrition, Shark Attacks and Beach Attendance and Adolescent Views of Space Exploration and the Impact of Biased Readings. surface area on the stem for the uptake of water is essential. That is why florists recommend cutting the stem on a slant to expose more area to the water. • Place flowers in water immediately. Some people advocate cutting the stems while they’re actually submerged in water. However, you will probably be fine if you simply recut the stems on flowers you brought inside and immediately put them in a vase of water. The key is not to let the tip of the stem dry out or close up with an air bubble, sap or other substances, preventing the uptake of water. Be sure to use lukewarm water so as not to shock the blooms. • Remove leaves. Take off the leaves of the plant that would end up underwater in the vase. Exposure to the water could cause the leaves to rot and fall off, creating algae or sludge in the vase water. It also may breed extra bacteria or attract small insects to the water. However, do

not to remove the thorns from roses, as this tends to shorten their shelf life. • Choose young flowers. Mature flowers may have peaked and begun to make room for a new round of blooms, so try to choose young buds or blooms that just opened so that you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy them longer. • Create a viable water atmosphere. Once a fresh flower is cut and a stem is placed in water, bacteria and fungi can start to grow almost immediately. These microscopic organisms can clog the small tubes inside the stem that suck up water for nourishment. Many florists send home a packet of water additive to alleviate some problems in the indoor environment. The packet will contain a biocide that kills bacteria and fungi. There will be an acidifier as well as sugar. The acidifier makes the water more acidic to allow better absorption of water up the stem. The sugar is a food source for the flowers. Homeowners

who cut flowers from their gardens can purchase these additives or create their own variations from items around the house. It has been said a penny in the water will kill the microorganisms because copper is a fungicide. An aspirin can make the water more acidic. You can also try small amounts of bleach, lemon-lime soda or even antiseptic mouthwash. • Keep flowers away from ... Don’t place cut flowers next to fruit, which gives off gases as it ripens, causing flowers to age faster. Also, keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and try to keep them in a cool place. • Change the water. Keep on top of water maintenance by changing it at least every 2 to 3 days to maintain good water health. Be sure to replace the additives each time you change the water. By following a few strategies you can keep fresh-cut flowers lasting longer for enjoyment.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad held a lottery on April 7th to determine winners of eight free bike lockers at the Bellmore train station. Murray and Ahmad were joined at the event – held at the Bellmore train station – by Councilwoman Angie Cullin, Councilman Gary Hudes, employees of the newly opened bicycles shop, Merrick Bicycles, and several residents who entered “lottery tickets” for the free bike lockers. “By providing residents with a safe, weatherproof location at which they can lock up their bicycles, the Town of Hempstead is encouraging more and more people to leave the car at home and bike as part of their daily commute,” stated Murray. “This is also a great opportunity for residents, as the weather gets warmer, to get some exercise before and after work.” The eight winners of the bike locker lottery, each of whom will receive use of a bike locker for one year, are: Adele Godfried, of Wantagh Paul and Krystyna Falbo, of Bellmore Kenneth Patrey, of Wantagh Jeffrey Cohen, of Hempstead

The bike lockers are part of the town’s clean energy plan, encouraging pollution-free methods of transportation and helping to protect the environment “The Town of Hempstead is proud to utilize these eight bike lockers as part of a larger environmentally friendly agenda,” said Ahmad. “I would like to thank all the town residents who participated in this bike locker lottery.” Each of the bike lockers is 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 3 ¼ feet wide, all conveniently located on the north side of the tracks at the Bellmore train station. Each locker easily fits a standard bicycle, protecting it from damage, theft and bad weather. The town requires a $40 key deposit, which is refunded at the end of the one-year lease. No sub-leasing is permitted. “Biking instead of driving is great for one’s health and

for the environment in the Town of Hempstead,” said Cullin. Added Hudes, “Bike tracks are certainly better than carbon footprints, and we encourage residents to seek greener methods of transportation.” The town also thanks Merrick Bicycles, which provided free front and rear bike lights to each of the bike locker winners. Making A Difference “Indeed, they have given of themselves without a thought of recognition or accolades.” Hundreds of nominations were received for the town’s prestigious “Make a Difference” Award. Murray presented each Make a Difference honoree with a commemorative medal and certificate. The honorees represent several communities across the Town of Hempstead: In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Richard Cantwell of Freeport turned a small group of friends into a battalion of volunteers known as the Friends of Freeport. Led by Rich and his wife Donna, the group has renovated more than 100 homes since Sandy. Created by Shantay Carter of Hempstead, the Women of Integrity empowers and educates women of all ages, focusing on young girls in need of support and guidance. Shantay orchestrates a drive each year to help make prom dreams come true for disadvantaged young women, by collecting and donating dresses and providing makeovers.

Mark Eisen of Island Park, who witnessed the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center first hand, has volunteered to assist, guide and comfort visitors to the 9/11 national monument since it opened in 2011. He also volunteers at the Tribeca Film Festival and Woodstock Senior Center in Manhattan. Gene H. Hall, Sr., of Freeport, a beloved barber and a pillar in the Hempstead village community for nearly 50 years, is not only a business owner, but he is also a mentor, a dedicated family man, a devout member of his church and active in various causes. In support of friends and loved ones, Cassidy King of Levittown has given countless hours during her teenage years raising funds and awareness for charity organizations, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Special Olympics and Locks of Love. Daniel and Laurie McGuiganof Franklin Square, married over 50 years, are dedicated to preserving their community’s storied past

through the Franklin Square Historical Society. They are active in their local parish and an array of community groups. Inspired by a documentary about people struggling to make ends meet on Long Island, 12-year-old Cory Nichols of Oceanside set out to raise money and support local food pantries, establishing “C the Difference: Cory Cares.” Superstorm Sandy hit the area about a month later, and Cory’s humanitarian efforts aided hundreds of storm victims. Chris Pekoff of North Bellmore plays many roles in his community – as a business owner, civic leader, coach and president of his local Little League. Pekoff spearheaded the establishment of a youth bowling league, as well several charity efforts and programs. In a wheelchair and facing physical challenges of his own, Noah Adam Probert of Westbury, a proud member of the Town of Hempstead ‘s Camp ANCHOR in Lido Beach, works tirelessly to make children’s dreams come true through a

host of organizations, including Make a Wish, Toys for Tots, United Cerebral Palsy and Island Harvest. Jane Rubinstein of North Merrick uses her artistic talents, donating her artwork and paintings to support a variety of causes, including the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Chrohn’s and Colitis Foundation and the September 11th Relief Fund. WhenTony Spezio of Valley Stream became president of his school district’s PTSA, it launched him into a legacy of volunteerism in the district. Tony has taken the lead on important youth initiatives and has served on many school district committees and boards. The holidays truly are a time of giving, but Kathryn Tuffy of Bellerose Village goes above and beyond, storing thousands of donated toys in her home and then distributing them to families in need. Tuffy also co-created Beautiful Me, a program focused on promoting self-esteem for young women, established in honor of the three Hance

sisters of Floral Park who tragically died in a 2009 car accident. “The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in Hempstead Town,” Murray said. “I thank all of our honorees for making our township a better place.”

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Town Board presented 12 Make a Difference awards to outstanding residents at the 18th Annual “Make A Difference” Awards Ceremony. The ceremony highlighted local heroes, including those who rise to the occasion, as well as people who make a difference in the lives of others on an everyday basis. Murray opened the ceremony with a tribute to late 9/11 responder, New York City Police Officer Francis T. Pitone of East Meadow, who died in August of 2013 from an illness related to his recovery work at Ground Zero and at the Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island. Members of the Pitone family were special guests at Hempstead Town’s Make a Difference ceremony as Murray called the fallen officer an inspiration for the ceremony and for all people who strive to make a positive difference in our communities. “Like Officer Pitone, the people who we honored haven’t sought to reap the harvest of their volunteer efforts,” Murray said.
