Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic
A flashlight is an invaluable part of any disaster preparedness kit, and it’s a handy tool to have on hand in a car, at home or when traveling. You never know when you might need a flashlight, and it’s helpful to have many on hand. When stocking up on flashlights for emergency kits, choose ones with lightemitting diode, or LED, technology. According to Popular Mechanics, LED flashlights are 70 percent more efficient than incandescent models. That means the batteries powering the light have the potential to last 10 times longer. Furthermore, LEDs do not have any fragile parts like incandescent bulbs. That makes them more likely to withstand shock or even endure being dropped.
North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. • Fifty public libraries in Nassau County, are offering a digital-only library card • Residents of Nassau County who do not currently have a library card can get one at nassaulibrary.org/ digital-card-application • Anyone who has a local library card can utilize the digital resources of their local library, as well as the shared resources of the member libraries of the Nassau Library System, including ebooks, digital magazines, study support, and continuing education for children and adults. Get carded and use the library anywhere! Nassau Library System, a cooperative of 54 independent public libraries serving Nassau County, is pleased to announce that fifty local libraries now offer a digital
library card. This new tool will allow residents of Nassau County who do not already have a card to utilize the digital resources of their library while facilities are closed due to the spread of coronavirus. People can learn more at nassaulibrary.org/digitalcard-application. Having access to library resources is essential for people at all stages of their lives, especially during times like these. Since public libraries across the County are currently closed, a digital library card will enable people to explore the full complement of online library services from the comfort of their homes. Download the Libby app and borrow ebooks and audiobooks. Some libraries provide access to streaming entertainment apps like Kanopy or Hoopla that can be installed on your smart TV. Other resources include Tutor.com, which connects users to live

Matching Grant of Up to $500,000 Will Help Keep Healthcare Professionals Safe in Their Fight Against COVID-19 Long Island Community Hospital has announced that the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge has awarded a $500,000 matching grant made possible by the Knapp-Swezey Foundation, Island Outreach Foundation and Gardener Foundation to help raise vital funding for the community hospital in their fight against COVID-19. “I’m extremely grateful and proud to announce this new initiative from the Knapp Family, valued members of our LI Community Hospital family, that will greatly enhance our ability to fight COVID-19 right here in our community,” said Richard T. Margulis, President and Chief Executive Officer at LI Community Hospital. The Knapp Family will match every donation, dollar for dollar up to $500,000 to directly purchase precious personal protective equipment (PPE), supplies, equipment and other items necessary to keep our healthcare professionals safe during this pandemic. These purchases are ongoing and include masks, gowns, eyewear and other protective gear in high demand. “Our families’ collaborative battle cry is ‘if not now, when?’ Your donations are protecting those who are saving lives in our community. For its demonstration of exceptionally high commitment to music education and student access to music education, the Bellmore School District was once again designated as one of the nation’s 2020 Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. A nonprofit organization supported, in part, by the National Association of Music Merchants, the
NAMM Foundation‘s goal is to advance participation in music. To receive this prestigious designation, Bellmore’s music education department was analyzed for funding, staffing of qualified music teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. The district’s Bellmore Star Music Program offers instruction in string, woodwind, brass and
percussion instruments and provides opportunities for students to perform in band, orchestra and chorus. Unique and beneficial to students is the opportunity for every second grade student to receive instruction in violin. Third grade students are offered lessons on a string instrument and can participate in orchestra. Beginning in fourth grade, students can participate in
band and receive lessons in their chosen instrument. Students also perform in various school concerts, choral groups and musical theater productions. Another unique music opportunity is the Star Ukulele Program. Winthrop Avenue students are introduced to the ukulele and play songs during their general music lessons. Students enrolled at Winthrop Avenue and
Shore Road School can also join the Ukulele Club and practice their skills at recess. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo explained that Bellmore’s music offerings, as well as support from the board of education, administration, faculty and the community have helped the district to achieve the status as one of the nation’s premier education programs.
