Make Way for the Osprey PSEG Long Island Cleans Osprey Nests To Prepare For The Raptors’ Return PSEG Long Island is preparing for the upcoming osprey breeding season by inspecting known nesting areas, performing maintenance on the osprey cams it installed last year, and cleaning out debris and garbage in the nests located near the cameras in Oyster Bay and Patchogue, N.Y. “On a recent cold, wintery day, crews visited the two osprey nests viewable via the PSEG Long Island osprey cam to clean and reinforce the cameras and remove debris from the nests,” said John O’Connell, vice president of Transmission and Distribution, PSEG Long Island. “We look forward to the return of the osprey pairs so we can all enjoy a glimpse of these majestic birds in their natural environment.” To view the work at the nest, visit https://youtu.be/ zFbNipM6ne0. Many times, the osprey will gather garbage, such as plastic bags, fishing wire — and in this case, even a bungee cord with a large metal hook — to build their nests. Fishing lines and strings may wrap around the birds’ feet, preventing them from leaving the nest. Plastic litter is very easy to find and since the birds live close to humans, plastics often are found in nests. In balancing its commitment to the consistent, safe delivery of power for its customers with its commitment to being a good environmental steward, PSEG Long Island has installed dozens of new osprey nesting platforms to deter the returning birds from nesting on electrical

equipment, which puts both the raptors and the electrical system in danger. Maintaining the nesting platforms helps PSEG Long Island maintain strong electric service reliability. As part of PSEG Long Island’s annual inspections of the transmission and distribution system across Long Island and the Rockaways, electric service workers take notice of any dangerous nesting activity near electrical equipment. Ospreys instinctively seek lofty places for their nests, often choosing utility poles and transmission structures. When ospreys build a nest on electrical equipment, it puts the nest in danger of catching fire, which can cause significant damage and outages to customers, as well has harm to the ospreys. The birds are at high risk of electrocution, as their large wingspan

can complete the circuit between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. PSEG Long Island has installed 24-hour webcams at two of the nests safely relocated by line workers. Since the resurgence of the osprey population, PSEG Long Island and its dedicated team have identified best practices for when to move a nest, and when to create alternative safer nests for the ospreys. Long Island is home to more than 400 species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Long Island’s osprey population decreased and became endangered. The effort to build safe nesting sites on or near waterways has contributed to the rise in the population of osprey.

Safely Dispose of Hazardous Household Items at Hempstead Town’s Free S.T.O.P. Programs Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin – in collaboration with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Thomas Muscarella and Councilman Chris Carini – is inviting residents to participate in the S.T.O.P (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Program to help safeguard our environment from toxic materials by properly disposing of certain hazardous materials found in the average home. All S.T.O.P. programs will be completely contactless to keep residents safe in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants are asked to place all materials in their trunks and remain in their vehicles – employees working the S.T.O.P. events will do the rest! “The Town of Hempstead is dedicated to keeping our community green, clean and pristine, and we encourage all residents to join us in that mission by safely disposing of hazardous materials at Town of Hempstead S.T.O.P. events,” stated Supervisor Clavin. “These free programs will be offered throughout 2021, so come on down to get rid of your hazardous materials while helping to protect our environment.” The town’s S.T.O.P Program is a simple and economical approach to the disposal of items such as batteries, certain types of cleaners, pesticides, aerosol cans and many other items. It is open to all Hempstead Town residents, excluding businesses. The Vaxmobile was financed with federal CARES Act funding that was distributed to Hempstead Town, to be used to assist town businesses, organizations and residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Town of Hempstead has allocated more than a million dollars to Mount Sinai South Nassau during the pandemic to secure this mobile unit, as well as for COVID-19 testing and helping to reimburse unbudgeted expenses over the past year. The Town of Hempstead and Mount Sinai South Nassau are in direct contact with community leaders to schedule vaccination visits that are conveniently located. Such locations include faith-based organizations, libraries, recreation centers, senior centers, parks and train stations. Organizations or centers interested in scheduling a potential visit for eligible residents or who need more information may reach out to the Town of Hempstead by calling (516) 812-3678 or may send an email to Va x M o b i l e @ s n c h . o r g . Additional information about the mobile unit and its schedule will be posted

on the Town of Hempstead website hempsteadny.gov or on the Mount Sinai South Nassau Website at southnassau.org. All vaccines administered by the Vaxmobile are by appointment only and residents must be eligible as determined by the New York State Department of Health. The mobile vaccination unit is handicappedaccessible, and is staffed by a bi-lingual clinical team from Mount Sinai South Nassau. The interior of the unit includes a private exam room, computerized clinical workstations, medical testing and lab technologies and secure storage areas. Hospital is on-hand and available should any rare complications arise from a COVID-19 vaccination. At the current time, Mount Sinai South Nassau has safely administered over 10,000 vaccines at its site in Rockville Centre. “Be on the lookout for the Vaxmobile coming to a neighborhood near you!” concluded Clavin. “We are excited to work with Mount Sinai South Nassau to expand on this program and vaccinate more and more Hempstead Town residents.”

As the world began shutting down one year ago, Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray immediately thought of all the weddings scheduled to take place at Hempstead Town Hall that week. The Town Clerk’s staff quickly reached out to all those who were scheduled to wed in the coming days and offered them the opportunity to have their marriage ceremony held outside on the steps of Town Hall, in the first “socially distant” ceremonies. On March 18, 2020, as schools, businesses and governments around the state were silent, more than a dozen couples at Hempstead Town Hall were the last ones to have inperson weddings for quite a while. “A wedding day is one of the most meaningful days of a person’s life and to think of all these couples losing the opportunity to proceed with their ceremonies with just a few days or hours’ notice broke my heart,” said Murray. “While safety was of paramount importance, Supervisor Don Clavin and I realized that we could perform the weddings of the couples scheduled for that week on the steps of Town Hall and still allow them to marry in a safe manner before the full shutdown was implemented.” As couples who were scheduled to marry across the state were being turned away, Town Clerk Murray had couples from other jurisdictions coming to her to be married. The Town Clerk’s staff quickly reached out to all those who were scheduled to wed in the coming days and offered them the opportunity to have their marriage ceremony held outside on the steps of Town Hall, in the first “socially distant” ceremonies. On March 18, 2020, as schools, businesses and governments around the state were silent, more than a dozen couples at Hempstead Town Hall were the last ones to have in-person weddings for quite a while. as many people as I could in the midst of one of the most terrifying and confusing times any of us have experienced,” noted Murray. “While my office saw the worst side of the pandemic as the numbers of death certificates we issued skyrocketed, the joy of seeing couples join their lives together became even more meaningful.” “As weddings were cancelled or postponed across our nation, Town Clerk Kate Murray made sure that couples in America’s largest township could quickly amend their plans and celebrate their special days in a safe manner,” added Supervisor Clavin. “I commend Town Clerk Murray for her leadership and ingenuity to continue providing vital programs and services to residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.” Following Murray’s wedding marathon, weddings in the state were not allowed again until an executive order by the Governor allowed marriage officers to officiate weddings virtually. Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. The Board of Directors, members, supporters and volunteers of CFK are all “Contractors For Kids.” They are all helping others and building futures for children and their families in need. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is

located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed aﬂoat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others ﬁnancially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. Donations are so important to CFK, especially being that they receive no grant money. They would like to thank all thsoe who attended their Scavenger Hunt fundraising event on April 10th. Their next fundraising event will be a golf outing on June 14th, stay tuned for more information! Live music has been hard hit during the 20202021 school year, but Wantagh Middle School strings students finally had the opportunity to perform as an ensemble on March 16 and March 17. “I set up Fiddle Day so that orchestra students could get motivated and excited about a performance opportunity this year,” music teacher Courtney Miller said. “Sixth graders have been asking all year when they will be able to play as an ensemble, so this was a way

of finding a compromise.” Ms. Miller explained that fiddle tunes are a great way of reviewing basic string techniques, a focus during sixth grade lesson periods. Fiddle Day was also open to seventh and eighth grade students who have learned more advanced techniques such as time signatures, double stops and slides. There were two performance opportunities to accommodate both cohorts and to be able to maintain appropriate social-distancing protocols. Ms. Miller

also thanked high school orchestra teacher Dana Langer who assisted in rehearsals and elementary school teacher Eliza DellaMonica who joined the performances.
