They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements.
Families have access to such Hope For Youth services as mental health, ChildParent Psychotherapy, Children and Family Treatment Support Services and the Health Home program. In addition, Hope For Youth partners with the “Parenting the Second Time Around” (PASTA) team from the Riverhead-based Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County to help grandparents navigate the educational, medical and legal systems to get the support and resources they need. Their experts assist with such challenges as discipline, child development, legal concerns and rebuilding a family. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families. Eunice Lee, a senior at General Douglas MacArthur High School in the Levittown Public School District, has achieved a personal dream with her acceptance into Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. Eunice has been inspired to pursue a path toward the Marine Academy since she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in seventh grade. There, she reached the rank of senior master sergeant and was a flight commander, and she adopted many of the high morals and disciplines taught to servicemembers. At Merchant Marine Academy, Eunice will study Marine Transportation. She added she appreciates the flexibility in choosing a career after graduation – she may choose to work in the commercial industry or serve in the Navy. “There are a lot of options,” Eunice said. “I’m grateful to my parents and all of my teachers for pushing me to get to this point.”

TWO BELLMORE-MERRICK STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT FINALIST - Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is proud to announce that Eric Avellone of Sanford H. Calhoun High School and Helena Fu of Wellington C. Mepham High School were named National Merit finalists. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 15,000 students of the 1.5 million juniors who entered qualified as finalists. NMSC will later notify the 12th graders if they are among the approximately 7,500 finalists that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship, corporate, or college-sponsored monetary award. St. Baldrick’s Event Raises Nearly $70K For Charity The entire BellmoreMerrick school community came together March 16 for the districtwide annual Chop Your Locks for charity event benefiting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, hosted by Wellington C. Mepham High School. This year’s in-person event has already raised more than $67,000 for the foundation, which supports pediatric cancer research and outreach. “The seniors worked together to fundraise and get the word out about the event. But it was truly a community effort,” explained event co-organizer and social studies chairperson Robyn Einbinder. Together with teachers Kerry Dennis and Chris Patten, Einbinder oversaw various details of the evening’s success.
Members of the senior leadership classes manned registration, raffle and food booths. Cast members from Skull and Bones’ upcoming drama production, “Beauty & the Beast” performed a musical number. The Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting team, under the direction of Stu Stein, Matthew Russel and Lisa Kalish, provided livestreaming of the event. Broadcasting students Sean McQuillan and Ava Scheffler interviewed St. Baldrick’s Founder, John Bender, live on air. The Amity Harbor Pipes Band, which includes social studies teacher Chris Patten, performed traditional Irish music. Members of the Star Warsthemed cosplay group, the 501st Legion, were also on hand. One of this year’s
honorees included Carsyn Volpe, a seventh grader at Grand Avenue Middle School, who is currently battling pediatric cancer. His sister, Cayden, a student at Mepham, was the event’s top fundraiser at $6,000. When it came time for the shaving shenanigans, students from the district’s cosmetology program, led by instructor Jaime Pendl, operated the hair buzzers. The program is housed at Sanford H. Calhoun High School. “We were so grateful to have had the event back in person this year,” added Einbinder. Money from Mepham’s annual Battle of the Classes which will be held in May will also go toward the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

A Letter From Project9Line Dear supporters, The Department of Veterans Affairs is proposing changes to the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities specifically pertaining to the respiratory & auditory body systems as well as mental disorders. The “savings” from these proposed changes are projected at 100 Billion dollars over the next 10 years. That equals $100,000 directly from 1 Million Veterans pockets. The main conditions affected are Sleep Apnea, Tinnitus, and PTSD. We only have 1 week left to stop them. Please alert your network around the country to tell their local congressman that we do not want these changes made. Also, please tell your media contacts the same. Together we can stop them but we must Act now. The VA claims that they will not reduce any current Ratings but it is the VA’s regular practice to periodically reassess disabled veterans who have not sought an increase. If a reassessment occurs, it may be done under the new guidelines and the risk of reduction is most definitely present. This new rating schedule may effect every veteran past, present, and future. The reason for the proposed sleep apnea changes is because many veterans who were exposed to burn pits and/or agent orange (both are dioxin) have developed the condition sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is extremely debilitating and can be fatal. Currently, if a veteran is diagnosed with sleep apnea and is prescribed a CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) machine they are entitled to 50% service connection. Sleep apnea symptoms include; excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), depression, anxiety, headaches, sexual disfunction, hight blood pressure, increased accidents, cardiac issues, loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning headache, difficulty staying asleep (insomnia), of inability to concentrate, irritability, snoring, restlessness while sleeping, waking up suddenly after gasping or choking, trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, or crankiness, constant need to go pee at night, night sweats as well as it can lead to a stroke. The VA is proposing to eliminate
the 50% threshold verbiage that currently states “the veteran requires the use of a breathing assistance device, such as a CPAP machine” which entitles the veteran to 50% service connection. By removing this verbiage they will effectively eliminate any future applicants from getting the 50% rating for sleep apnea. The VA states “the basis for assignment of evaluation at all of these proposed levels will be the functional impairment caused by sleep apnea, not simply the method of treatment.” Also, the VA claims the “purpose of these changes is to update medical terminology, incorporate medical advances that have occurred since the last review, and provide well- defined criteria in accordance with actual clinical practice.” This is not so, It’s all about the money as shown through the VA projected savings in the VA economic impact study released on January 27, 2022. From said VA economic impact study - “VALUE: VA has determined that there are costs and transfer savings associated with this rulemaking. The total transfers savings is $15 billion from FY 2022-2026 and $57.1 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” Most of that savings (40 Billion) is from the proposed sleep apnea ratings changes and Tinnitus removal (15 Billion). The reason for the tinnitus changes is because almost everyone that has served has developed tinnitus. Tinnitus is the most commonly service connected condition. Over 90% of Veteran applicants are granted service connection for tinnitus (over 2 million veterans are service connected for tinnitus) and are paid about $150 per month at the current rate. The VA is proposing to eliminate the 10% rating for tinnitus and combine the symptoms of tinnitus with hearing loss and rate it under hearing loss. The issue is that the threshold for service connection for hearing loss is much more difficulty to achieve. The result of this change will make it extremely difficult for veterans to be compensated for tinnitus and the constant ringing in the ears. Also, in a separate simultaneous proposal, the VA is proposing to change the Rating Schedule for
mental health conditions. After review it seems that these changes may be beneficial to veterans but we should all be wary of assuming any benefit from these changes just yet. The definition and interpretation of the new verbiage has yet to be played out. With an estimated savings of 45 Billion over the next 10 years, it appears that the veterans with mental health conditions could be paying the price. Estimated savings based on the VA economic impact study of the proposed changes to the mental health verbiage within the ratings schedule. “Estimated impact: VA has
determined that there are costs and transfers associated with this rule making. The total budgetary impact is $18.3 billion from FT 2022-2026 and $45 billion over a 10-year period from FY 2022-2031.” We can not let them make these changes. Please take the time to alert your fellow Americans, fellow veterans, elected officials, and media connections that we do not want these changes made. Please take the time to alert your fellow veterans, concerned citizens, elected officials, and media connections that we do not want these changes made. Bethpage Federal Credit Union Relaunches “Difference Makers,” Its Youth Empowerment Initiative
Bethpage Cares, Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s charitable giving arm, announces the relaunch of Difference Makers, its youth empowerment initiative first launched in January, 2020, but then paused as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Developed to empower young individuals to come together to support their local communities, Bethpage will provide mini grants ranging from $250 to $5,000 to individual students and student groups, ranging from the 5th grade through undergraduate college, who share their desire to develop a project-focused program to benefit the community. “We want to invest in our children, the future leaders of our communities. Now that student activities have started to resume, it is important that we reinstate Difference Makers, which has the potential to make a big impact on many passionate young people,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Throughout the last two years, we have been
able to support some grant applications with a few highlighted below: Syosset South Woods Middle School students and Jericho brothers, 14-year-old Ben Ellis, an 8th grader, and 12-year-old Aidan Ellis, a 7th grader, requested grant money from Difference Makers to install a summertime butterfly garden that can be turned into a sitting bench in the colder, winter months, when the flowering plants are dormant. With their grant money, and collaboration with the North Shore Land Alliance, Ben and Aidan were able to successfully develop and install their butterfly garden and planter/bench at the Wawapek Preserve located in Cold Spring Harbor. Glen Cove resident, Elana Greim, a 17-yearold 12th grade student at Glen Cove High School, requested grant money for her Environmental Club, with the goal of implementing a school recycling program. With help from her Difference Makers grant, Elana and her club were able to purchase

recycling bins for 115 school classrooms. Elana believes that it is more important than ever to create recycling programs to help combat global warming, and to help make the Earth a cleaner place, one step at a time. August “Gus” Bresnaider, 18, who is currently a student at the University of Virginia, was an Eagle Scout with Troop 123 in Merrick and a 12th grader at Mepham High School when he requested grant money to improve a community garden at the Park Avenue Elementary School, in Merrick. With his grant money from Bethpage, Gus and his troop created new garden beds, including two wheelchair-accessible garden beds so that everyone could enjoy and take part in the upkeep of the garden. They also re-mulched the area and created a “Park Pride” sign on the front fence of the garden. Bethpage encourages parents, mentors, teachers, family and friends to encourage the children in their lives to get involved in their local communities. throughout the day, stopped into lunch periods to talk to students, and visited club meetings and events after school,” said Principal Katelyn Dunn. “They wanted to fully immerse themselves in the day-to-day at Merrick Avenue to really get an understanding about who we are as an educational community.” Dunne said there was so much to share during the site visit. “Prior to leaving, and not yet knowing we earned the designation, the team shared with us how impressed they were by not only the educational programs and offerings we have for students, but by the positive culture of the building, and how Merrick Avenue is a place our students and staff really want to be,” added Dunn. Not only does the program celebrate research-based practices that have been implemented successfully at the middle school level, but applicants are required to provide an outline for continued improvements over the coming years. “The staff at Merrick Avenue knows how critical middle school is for students’ personal growth and development,” added Dunn. “I am proud of our entire school community for earning this award
because it honors who we are now as a school of excellence, but also acknowledges that we are educators committed to future professional growth, and always put our students first. Singer/songwriter Debbie Gibson, a Sanford H. Calhoun High School alumna, recently returned to her Merrick roots and visited the On Tour Program students as they prepared for their spring production, “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” Gibson was on hand to film a portion of an upcoming CBS television show, “Secret Celebrity Renovation,” according to Sal Salerno, director of the On Tour Company. An aspect of the show is for the celebrity to return to their hometown and reminisce about their years growing up. The episode is scheduled to air sometime
this summer. “Many of the kids only know her from what I’ve told them but many of their parents were big fans,” Salerno added. “The kids had a great time talking with her and asking and answering questions.” Gibson was Salerno’s former student, appearing as Hodel in “Fiddler on a Roof” when she was a sophomore in the 198586 school year. She wrote music for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as a junior in the 1986-87 school year, as well as taught the girls the vocals and created the multi-track arrangements, he said. While still at Calhoun,
Gibson achieved platinumrecord success, including five top 10 hits, while still in high school. She went on to attend prom and graduation in 1988. “Over the years, she has been very magnanimous, welcoming OTC students backstage at ‘Les Misérables,’ ‘Grease,’ ‘Beauty’ and the Beast’ and ‘Cabaret,’” Salerno added. “She spent over an hour with the group after ‘Cabaret’ answering many questions.” In 2018, Gibson even arranged to give OTC a new song for their then production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Hempstead Town Lifeguards Wanted
Students at Wantagh Middle School are all about heart health, whether it is getting exercise for themselves or raising money to help others. This year, the school continued a long-standing fundraiser by participating in Hoops for Heart, to benefit the American Heart Association. Since 1996, Wantagh Middle School has raised more than $100,000 for the organization, including $2,278 this year. Students took part in
a “knockout” basketball tournament during physical education classes. In the game, participants in a group had to keep making baskets in order to eliminate other players. The class winners were invited to the finals in the gymnasium on March 11. A total of 26 students from grades 6-8 competed, while the rest of the eighth grade came to spectate and cheer them on. Sixth grader Chris Eslinger emerged as the winner for
the boys and seventh grader Charlize Marmol was the last one standing in the girls competition. Before the tournament began, Nicholas Montagano and Eva Martinez were recognized as the school’s top fundraisers, each collecting more than $200 for the American Heart Association. Wantagh’s Hoops for Heart event was organized by physical education teachers Eileen Keener, Thomas Liguori and Gary Reh.
East Meadow Swimmers Compete In 2022 NYSPHSAA Tournament
East Meadow Schools were well represented during the 2022 NYSPHSAA Boys Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca College. East Meadow High School swimmer Adrian Romej was the district’s top performer by placing 11th in the state in the
200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.72. W.T. Clarke High School swimmer Will Kim competed in the 100 backstroke. East Meadow High School swimmers Owen Miao (200 and 500 freestyle) and Ethan Miao (100 freestyle) also competed in the tournament. East Meadow’s four
athletes also combined to compete for the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Their performances capped off a tremendous season and helped the East Meadow/ Levittown team to a second-place team finish at the Nassau County Swimming & Diving Championships.

Music Courses Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers.
The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least
one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting Earns Excellence Award
The Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting program in the Central High School District has been named a 2022 Student Television Network Broadcast Excellence Award winner. The Broadcast Excellence award honors a select number of schools across the nation for their “studentproduced programs that meet a standard of excellence. Programs are evaluated holistically based on one show entry, as well as the program’s website and social media channels.” “This award is STN’s highest honor as it recognizes not only the contributions of a select few students who may have worked on a single project, but instead celebrates the contributions of every member of the program,” explained Program Director Stu Stein. “It is quite remarkable that in only our sixth year in existence, BMB
has joined 13 programs from across the country including perennial powerhouses like Carlsbad High School in San Diego and Christopher Columbus High School in Miami in winning this award.” This recognition is born from the hard work, passion, and dedication of current crop of amazing broadcasters who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to take all of the broadcasts from the weekly (Morning Announcements, Midweek Update and This Week at BMB) monthly (Talkin’ Cookies, Sports Talk and Film Festival) and live event coverage to a previously unimaginable level, he explained. “Getting to this point so quickly would not have been possible without the contributions of our first few classes and the work they did to get us to this point,” added Stein. “In
just the short clip shown at the award ceremony, we saw graphics made by Kyle Santagato (2020) and Rocco Law (2020), a segment launched by Mike “The Storm” Daniels (2019) the anchor desk made famous by AJ Fried (2021) and Michele Spiller (2021) and we heard the iconic BMB theme originally put together by Jason Spiller (2018). It also has to be said that we could never have reached this point without the contributions of Sean Petraitis (2021), Louie Saraceni (2021) and Mike Galfano (2021) who not only kept us on the air during the darkest days on the pandemic but actually lit a path for all of our current students to follow that has led directly to this moment.” In addition to Stein, BMB is led by teachers Lisa Kalish, Jaclyn Kratzer and Matthew Russell.
Paws Of War Provides Long Island Veterans With Free Wellness Care Checkups For Their Service Animals In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.
(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The
scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 15, 2022.
