parents insist on a strict one. When a mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins arrives, the family finds that she’s the answer to their prayers, but in a peculiar way. Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

How long the wait seems until Spring has sprung. Through the wrath of each Winter’s cold and snow, not much sun. We trudge along to get to the day when that first daffodil or tulip peers out our way. Mother nature seems nearer somehow, beckoning us to spend time outdoors as each day allows. Though there is beauty and wonderment in all seasons for sure, Spring is that colorful, fresh aired awakening that can leave us in awe. May the brand new season shine brightly for all!

I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. So here I am, yet again, to save the day… From my understanding, there’s a section called “Snippets” in the middle of each edition of the newspaper this week, highlighting aforementioned magazine and its latest spring content. The magazine itself is beautiful, and can be read online by all at: www.seasonsmagazineonline.

com, or purchased for the highly reasonable yearly rate of $24.95. Being, well, not of the Human sort, I can’t say I find the extensive listings of Long Island happenings of much use. My Human rarely moves my new home anymore, so my biggest adventure is pretty much watching her occasionally cook. Speaking of, there are also several tasty recipes to be found in the pages of Seasons™, for those culinary sorts. Who doesn’t love a good meal, right? I know I do. Several per day, in fact. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and

getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? A-Buzz About Spelling During the 2016 Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee held at Hofstra University on March 13th, Levittown student Alex Gao from Abbey Lane Elementary School placed eighth, while Wisdom Lane Middle School student Sarah Masroor placed in the top one-third of studentcontestants. One winner from each of Levittown’s six elementary

schools and two middle schools entered the regional competition after winning individual school spelling bees. This is the first year Levittown has held spelling bees districtwide. During the March 30 Board of Education meeting, the school winners were announced and received certificates of appreciation. The winners included Valerie

In the East Meadow School District, W. T. Clarke Middle School student-musicians celebrated their musical talents throughout March. The National Association for Music Education identifies March as Music in Our Schools Month, where schools across the nation focus on music education.

During the month, music students participated in the school’s Practice-AThon raising money for Long Island Cares. Long Island Cares is a hunger assistance organization helping individuals and families across Long Island. Practice-A-Thon strengthened students’ practice habits while

encouraging empathy by sponsors pledging a donation for every minute students documented their daily music practice. In addition, Clarke Middle School Troubadour String Ensemble and Jazz Band shared their musical talents throughout the hallways with weekly performances.

In accordance with their English Language Arts curriculum, Birch School sixth-graders created art inspired by the Holocaust. After reading “Four Perfect Pebbles,” cowritten by Marion Blumenthal Lazan and Lila Perl, and studying the poems and drawings of young children in “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” by Hana Volavkova, students created their own artwork

honoring the thousands of children who died during this tragedy. During their research, students learned Terezin was a transportation camp in Czechoslovakia equipped with a small fortress including a prison with isolation cells, a yard for a firing squad and gallows. Terezin housed 18,000 children who would draw pictures describing the conditions of the camp

with any supplies they could find. Of the 18,000 children who passed through Terezin, only 100 survived to tell their story. To remember their lives, sixth-graders created their own drawings using accessible materials such as sticks, leaves, newspapers, string, clay and charcoal to represent the darkness and horror the children faced.

Accomplished Poet MacArthur High School student Amber Ramirez is the winner of the 2016 Scholastic Art and Writing Silver Key Award for her poem, titled “Sunflower.” Presented by the Alliance of Young Authors and Writers, the

award recognized Amber’s originality, technical skill and emergence of a personal voice and vision. She explained that “Sunflower” is not only a description of this popular flower, but also, “The poem is about about standing up

for yourself and being the person you are supposed to be.” Amber wants to continue nurturing her talents in creative writing at SUNY Purchase, where she will attend this fall.

Artistry on Silk Bellmore students at Winthrop Avenue School learned the ancient technique of dying silk during an “Artistry on Silk” workshop with visiting artist Esther Tollen and her son Sam Tollen. After learning about the fascinating silk cultivating process used today, each student was called up

individually to learn how to hold a bamboo paintbrush correctly before being instructed on how to dye a small portion of the silk banner. The students also learned how to mix colors to give the banner a richer color. “This is a great opportunity for all of you to learn this style

of painting,” Ms. Tollen said. “The method is very different because the paint migrates through the fibers.” Upon completion, the banner will hang on a school wall and will depict a leafy tree with the words “Winthrop Avenue Growing Leaders.”

Four years ago, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was the first district in Nassau County to participate in the New York State Education Department Adult Career & Continuing Education Services – Vocational Rehabilitation Summer Youth Employment Services program. At that time, the district worked in conjunction with ACCES-VR to place 10 graduating students with special learning needs in paid community

internships. One of those students was a young man named William Donohue, whose internship was at the World Gym in Wantagh. Four years later, William is still employed at World Gym. His story is an inspiration to all young adults with special needs. On March 11th, William, his mother Erin Donohue, World Gym Supervisor Richard Schutt and Cheryl Gitlitz, the districtwide transitions coordinator, were part of a panel that presented this success

story to more than 300 school district personnel and ACCES-VR counselors at Farmingdale State College. This presentation once again showed how the district’s commitment to students with special learning needs is a model for other districts to follow. As the overwhelming response from the audience was for the panel to “take this show on the road,” to help guide more districts to take part in outstanding programs such as this.

The Merrick Union Free School District congratulates Chatterton School collaborative teacher Cinnamon Green for achieving her doctorate degree from St. John’s University. Dr. Green received her Bachelor of Science in 1998 at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, where she studied elementary education, psychology and special education. In 2008, she obtained her Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Technology from Adelphi University.

Prior to joining the Merrick community, Dr. Green worked in an early intervention program with infants, toddlers and pre-school children with special needs in Howard Beach. Furthermore, she taught in the New York City Public School System in inclusive settings at Public School 268 in East Flatbush, Brooklyn for seven years. Having a desire to teach in a suburban setting, Dr. Green took a teaching position at Birch School in 2006, transferring to

Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino honored two Town of Hempstead lifeguards for their life-saving efforts at today’s Town Board meeting. Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and Councilman Gary Hudes were also on hand to join in the ceremony. “Our Town of Hempstead lifeguards are second to none and perform an enormous task of keeping our pools and beaches safe,” said Supervisor Santino.

The two lifeguards, Stephen Foran of Hempstead, and Kristie Ferrentino of Levittown, immediately jumped into life-saving action one evening at Echo Park Pool in West Hempstead. They resuscitated a person in distress and then stabilized the victim who was then transported to the hospital. “I commend Stephen and Kristie for their heroic actions and am appreciative of all of our lifeguards who keep a careful watch,” added Councilwoman

Fernandez National Examinations Scholarship Fund. In addition, Nicole Conway was a competition quarter finalist, and Alexa Salerno and Melanie Volz received honorable mention designations for their designs, under the direction of Spanish teacher and AATSP

member Adriana Como. The contest drew 520 entries from 12 public school districts and two parochial schools. Entries were judged on originality and uniqueness of design, artistic quality and representation of Hispanic and Portuguese culture.

Writing from the Heart The writing and research talents of Wantagh High School student Olivia Zukowski have resulted in several accolades this school year. After working with doctors last summer and fall at Winthrop University Hospital on artery stenting and brachytherapy, the sophomore’s contributions were included in three papers published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology titled “Men and Women Have Equivalent Outcomes

After Carotid Artery Stenting,” “Retrospective Analysis of Intracoronary Brachytherapy for Treatment of Drug Eluting In-Stent Restenosis” and “Carotid Artery Stenting is Safe and Effective in High Risk Patients.” In addition, Olivia has been invited to Dubai as an essay competition finalist sponsored by the Trust for Sustainable Living and coordinated by The Living Rainforest.
