The Division Avenue High School Career Development Program hosted its first Career Development Science Fair on March 17th, under the direction of Donna Negri, Eileen Nelson and Eileen Savino. The students chose an experiment that peeked

their interest and worked collaboratively to research and create a project for the fair. The student body and faculty were invited to view the experiments and listen to the interesting presentations. The Levittown School District congratulated the Career Development

East Broadway Elementary School students in Levittown have added ballroom dance to their list of educational skills. The students have been learning the tango, merengue, fox trot and rumba during a 10-week workshop with dance instructor Jessica Salvesen of Dancing Classroom of

Participants of Meadowbrook Alternative Program’s Shakespeare Festival took the lead from the famous playwright/ poet and were true to “thine own selves.” “It was a bit different this year in that through a grant we were able to secure green screens

and videotape a lot prior to the actual festival,” explained Laura Sheridan, English teacher and event organizer. “This opened us up to people doing voiceovers, working with technology and other aspects that engaged our students.” Students acted out scenes

ART SCHOLAR - Grace McMahon, a Bellmore-Merrick CHSD student attending Nassau BOCES Center for Community Adjustment, entered her artwork in the 13th Annual Nassau All-Count Art Exhibition at Farmingdale State College. She received a $200 scholarship in recognition of outstanding artistic achievement for her artwork. The event showcases the artwork of Nassau county students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Over 400 art educators from 48 Nassau County school districts submitted for the event this year.

Somehow, it always came together in the end. All these years later, my retention seems to have… slipped a bit, I suppose. Embodying a spirit of selflessness and patriotism, students at Chatterton School in the Merrick School District presented U.S. Navy veteran Petty Officer 2nd Class Tim Birckhead with a donation of more than $1,200 to help provide him with a new home through Homes for Our Troops. This generous contribution was made possible by the determination of fourth-grader Carter Tenenbaum. According to its website, Homes for Our Troops is a nonprofit organization that builds mortgage-free, specially adapted homes nationwide for severely injured veterans, helping to restore some of the freedom and independence they sacrificed while defending the country. After seven years of loyal service, Mr. Birckhead was unable to continue serving after being diagnosed with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, a debilitating condition that affects the peripheral nervous system. Hearing about the cause from his mother’s job on “The View,” Carter was inspired by the organization’s mission to help veterans rebuild their lives. Earlier in the year, the fourth-grader proposed an idea to the student council about hosting a schoolwide fundraiser that would contribute to the building of Birckhead’s home. Everyone loved the idea and together they spent months planning for this event. For the two weeks leading up to the assembly, Carter and student council members sold camouflage dog tags, raising a total of $1,260. Birckhead and his family visited Chatterton on March 22nd for the school’s Homes for Our Troops assembly. Making it a day trip, they visited Carter’s classroom to share Birckhead’s journey and had lunch with Carter

and the student council. Later that afternoon, students, teachers, administrators, “The View” co-host Sara Haines and Carter’s mother, Robin Hommel, gathered in the gymnasium for the ceremony where Birckhead accepted the school’s generous donation. Chatterton School Assistant Principal Scott Jackson kicked off the assembly by commending Carter for initiating the fundraiser. Student Council advisers Mrs. Angela Kremberg and Dr. Richard Nasto then took the podium to welcome Haines, who introduced the honored guest.

Afterward, students asked Birckhead questions about his service, his health condition and what he is most excited for in his new home in New Jersey. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience as Carter and Chatterton’s Student Council presented Birckhead with the check, along with an assortment of gifts that included a work of art for his new home, a red, white and blue knitted blanket made by We Care Blankets, and Chatterton School T-shirts and magnets for each member of his family. Record Breaking MacArthur High School lacrosse player Erin Vaughan Ware now holds the record for highest scorer in assists, points and goals for the Generals, having scored 257 points, 157 goals and 100 assists during her tenure on the varsity team. For a third time, Newsday has also named the third-time Long Island All-American one of Long Island’s Top 100 players.

When questioned about her prescription for success, Erin said, “I am very self-motivated and not afraid to fail.” Erin started her lacrosse career during second grade as a member of the Lady Tomahawks, a town team. She said she started playing with the stick in her right hand, but soon learned she was a leftie. “My first shot was a total failure,” she added.

Erin keeps fit in the offseason as a sprinter on the winter track team. She also played basketball with the Amateur Athletic Union through her junior year. During her sophomore year, Erin signed a national letter of intent to continue her sport at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York where she will pursue her studies in communications and public relations.

While in the Sanford H. Calhoun High School gym assisting at her sister’s basketball game on March 19th, senior Zahrah Ibrahim heard her mother calling out for help. Her grandmother was going in and out of consciousness. Ibrahim recalled the CPR/AED refresher she’d received in her high school physical education class a few weeks prior and began performing life-saving maneuvers.

“At first I almost froze because it was my own grandmother, but then my dad prompted me and I started right up,” Ibrahim said. “I couldn’t feel a pulse, so I kept performing the compressions until the ambulance arrived.” Her grandmother came to and was transported to a local hospital. She is now home recuperating. “If it weren’t for the school training, I wouldn’t have been able to save my

The course is financially funded by Forever 9 - The Robbie Levine Foundation, which was founded in 2005 in memory of 9-year-old Robbie Levine of Merrick, who died of sudden cardiac arrest at his little league practice. The foundation raises awareness of the need for AEDs in youth sports. While it is a new New York State Education Department mandate that high schools expose their students to AED training and hands-on CPR administration, the district has been implementing this over the past three years.

The courtroom erupted as the jury delivered a guilty verdict in the case of The State of Virginia vs. Judd Travers, who was accused of shooting a doe out of season while hunting. Such was the case tried during a mock trial at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore by Theresa Wallace’s fourth-grade students. Not only did the students prepare for their parts as defendant, plaintiff, trial lawyers,

jurors, stenographers, bailiffs and court reporters for several weeks, but invited parent and attorney Christopher Elliot to serve as the judge. Elliot presented a workshop on criminal justice prior to the mock trial, which prompted the activity. “The mock trial experience is authentic, because things are happening as they unfold,” Wallace stated. “During this experience, the students have honed listening and

speaking skills and have learned to craft openended questions, which are important life skills.” The prosecution team won with a presentation of evidence suggesting that the doctor who diagnosed Judd Travers with severe myopia did not have a medical license after pleading guilty to writing false prescriptions. They also noted that Travers did not wear his glasses during the trail, making it unlikely he had severe myopia.
