Kennedy High School placed in the top 10 nationally with a perfect score according to Virtual Enterprises International. The nonprofit works with schools to implement the yearlong VE class to provide students with collaborative and entrepreneurship business

experience. The JFK students’ virtual business, SkySource, is an “up and coming technology company that seeks to provide customers with top quality products at the best value,” as stated on the Virtual Enterprises International website. Their top 10 placement was determined by a composite score which measured engagement and achievement of targeted initiatives throughout the

VE Team Top Ranks year. “Some of the tasks include but are not limited to submission and presentation of a National Business Plan, evidence of student transactions, payments of expenses, processing payroll and competing in the Online Website Competition, to name a few,” explained faculty adviser Roseann Zocchia.

Moving Forward Today’s column is all about change. When you think about it, you’ll realize that change is all around us. For example, look at the number of women that are now in the U.S. House of Representatives. Look at the way our government is now run. Look at the new air of mystery surrounding many of the documents released by our government. I take no sides on this; merely I want to present the facts as reported by the New York Times, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. The other day I watched

a fascinating documentary about the effect of climate change around the world. It mentioned the melting of glaciers in Alaska and the heavy damage it is causing to both wildlife and commercial endeavors. Worse yet, the problem intensifies with each passing year and no one has the answer. There is a rumor that our government is even considering allowing new gas and oil exploration in many of these pristine areas with no regard for the damage it will do to wildlife and other vital areas of our environment.

Have you also noticed both the intensity and frequency of the storms we are experiencing along the entire United States? It is now common almost every day to see roads closed due to blizzard-like conditions, large cruise ships encountering unheard of severe weather patterns, threatening both the ship and the thousands of passengers aboard. Are you getting the message yet? The complexity of change itself…let’s approach the topic in a different way. One of my favorite entertainers is the

Stop the World, I Want to Get Off. iconic singer, Billy Joel. A few decades ago he both wrote and sang a song called We Didn’t Start The Fire. For those of you not familiar with it, it became one of the early top favorites at the time, and starts by naming at least fifteen trouble spots around the world and specifically pointing out that the “young people” of this world did not cause it. For, it was already there! Are you starting to see how difficult it really is to pinpoint the problems that change brings to all of us? We have now taken a

complete turn on how we all view change. For example, over the morning news I heard former Vice President, Joe Biden, carefully explain how he operates and the way he supports others. Plus more about the finger-pointing at Boeing, the psychological war between our President and the House of Representatives, the continuing fiasco surrounding building “The Wall” and the madness at our borders with Mexico, the increasing rate of rapes and murders throughout our country, problems in

Puerto Rico and many of our mid-east neighbors, plus the ever repeating problems surrounding Brexit. I have to ingest all of this news while having my breakfast? So here’s my secret for dealing with all of this madness…I relaxed over another cup of coffee and slowly started on how to organize my day. No Rush. Peace.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

tanks brimming with local marine life. This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where

we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.

How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.

"My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely

chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! each of the bags to brighten the soldiers’ day. Teachers Amanda Kowalski and Jennifer Magliano both have soldiers near and dear to their hearts stationed in the Middle East and will personally send the toiletry bags to the troops.

Additionally, the team earned first- and secondplace honors in the Jazz and Team Performance categories through the local competition season. They concluded their season by traveling to New Jersey for the Pascack Valley Invitational, where they received first place. “From the moment their

season began in late June, they embraced what it truly means to be a team,” said coach Kerry Dennis. “They sacrificed for each other in order to achieve their goals. They were cohesive, hardworking and determined and I could not be prouder of all they have accomplished.”

Becoming Energy Wise Northside Elementary School students in the Levittown Public Schools learned about energy conservation with the help of the PSEG Long Island and The National Theatre for Children’s show “The Conservation Caper,” on March 4. The interactive performance told the story of superhero

Nikki Neutron, played by Caroline Clay and energywasting villain Dr. Maybe, played by Bobby Hall, who compete against each other in an energy quiz show. The students were introduced to other characters, also played by Hall, as Nikki prepared for the quiz show and learned important lessons along

the way. Throughout the performance, students were highly engaged and learned about the science of energy, how energy is wasted and ways to conserve energy. Audience participation was also encouraged as students played a role in the performance.

Students at the East Meadow School District’s Parkway Elementary School gathered on March 11 for a special pep rally to celebrate PARP, reading achievements and the Tournament of Books. Principal Jamie Mack opened the ceremony in the school’s all-purpose room by introducing the Parkway Bear, the school’s mascot, to the students to build excitement. Mrs. Mack then unveiled the final four of the school’s Tournament of Books. The tournament

encouraged the students to read selected books to promote the fun of literacy. The books advancing to the semifinal round are “A Bad Case of Stripes” by David Shannon, “The Book with No Pictures” by B.J. Novak, “The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes” by Gary Rubinstein and Mark Pett and “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt. The four books will be read and voted on with two moving on to the final round on March 15. In addition to celebrating the

winning books, Mrs. Mack also announced that the school as a whole read nearly 43,000 hours during the week of March 4-8 alone. A class from each grade was revealed as the current leader in total hours read during the tournament. The Wantagh School District has appointed Carol-Ann Winans as director of science and technology, effective July 1. Ms. Winans will replace Tobias Daempfle, who served as interim science/ technology education director during the 20182019 school year. A Lynbrook resident, Ms. Winans joins Wantagh from the Lynbrook School District where she has served as science chairperson since 2015. Since 2007, she has also taught honors, Regents

and Advanced Placement science courses and served as the Lynbrook High School’s Science Olympiad Coach. Ms. Winans holds a bachelor’s degree in biologic sciences and secondary education from the University of Maryland at College Park, a master’s degree in science education from Queens College and educational, school building and school district leadership certification from the College of Saint Rose. Ms. Winans also received additional science education certification in chemistry through the University of Maryland at College Park’s Chemical and Life Sciences postmater’s degree program. Ms. Winans is a member of the New York State Nassau Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) where

she serves as section director, biology and living environment subject area representative and as a former member of the Board of Directors. As a member of STANYS, Ms. Winans has presented multiple sciencerelated workshops at the organization’s state conferences. Ms. Winans’ appointment was announced during the district’s March 14 board of education meeting where Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Marc Ferris welcomed her to the district. “Ms. Winans is at the forefront of science education in New York State, and we are fortunate to have such a qualified candidate to assume the role of director of science and technology,” he said. East Meadow High School English teacher Evelyn Sideri recently visited Harvard University in honor of having been named the Distinguished Educator of 2018 last April, by the Harvard Club of Long Island. In addition to the award, Ms. Sideri also received a grant to travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts for the “Harvard Experience.” She had the opportunity to

support her research in the area of teachers as lifelong learners during her visit from March 4-7. She also met with East Meadow alumni in the area, viewed the Emily Dickinson Archive, attended a class in Classical Mythology, took a tour of the campus and interviewed professors from the Graduate School of Education. Ms. Sideri was nominated for the award by Class of 2017 East

Distinguished Harvard Visit Meadow graduate Mahalia Mathelier, who guided the campus tour during her visit. “The experience provided personal growth and increased awareness for my growth as an educator,” said Ms. Sideri. Health Services

Along with early blooming daffodils and tulips comes an awareness of the debris and rubbish that collects over the winter months on local roads, fields and byways. Each year, Levittown Community Council, in conjunction with the Town of Hempstead, hosts a cleanup event to bring together community residents, help to beautify the community and highlight the importance of maintaining our local environment. Areas in and around the boundaries of the Levittown and Island Trees school districts benefit from the work done that day. In the past, hundreds

of pounds of all kinds of debris have been collected, which is picked up at the designated locations by the Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation. Adults and children of all ages are invited to volunteer for this event with children under the age of 14 requiring adult supervision. Several public areas to be cleaned are designated by the Council’s board of directors based on need for attention and for the safety of volunteers. In addition, the Council maintains a small garden spot at the East Village Green Pool area that is cleaned and replanted every year as part of the Earth Day event.

Interested volunteers must sign in at 1 PM at Veterans Memorial Park at Hempstead Turnpike and Shelter Lane where areas to be cleaned will be assigned and equipment may be picked up. Borrowed equipment must be returned to the same location at 4 PM, when the event is over. Those individuals needing verification of the hours they worked will be able to pick up their certificates at that same location.
