Are We There Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it safe to assume that spring has truly arrived at this point? Are we done with the random, sudden snowstorms - you know, the ones originally forecast as a 50% chance of rain? Can we begin the planting process without fear of our blossoms being petrified by the next deep freeze? One can only hope. At least baseball is back. Both New York teams seem to have great potential for success this season, assuming everyone stays healthy and on the

roster for more than a month, of course. Being a lifelong Yankees fan, the biggest attraction is the thrill of witnessing Derek Jeter’s farewell season, a celebration of a true class act. Along with the start of spring sports comes the prospect of beach weather just beyond the horizon, outdoor concerts and long, lazy afternoons spent in the warmth of the sun. Well, in an ideal world, anyway. For those of us in the workforce, the weekends are the only time to truly capitalize – and doesn’t it

always seem like it rains on those days? Of course, there’s something to be said for tackling that “spring” cleaning we’ve been putting off for the last year or so. And that closet… I don’t know about you all, but the nicer weather motivates me to do some serious shopping – if only I had room to stuff one more hanger in between the massive wardrobe collection that has taken up permanent residence. Ah, but if that’s the biggest problem, I’d say it’s shaping up to be a pretty fine spring indeed.

This will serve as good practice, particularly the first year of your garden. After you have mastered the basics, you can branch out into other produce. Know When To Plant

Many of the foods grown in vegetable gardens, including tomatoes and peppers, are summer vegetables, which means they reach peak ripeness after the height of the summer season. Pumpkins, brussel sprouts and peas are planted to be harvested later on. These plants may be put in the ground a little later than others. It is less expensive to start seedlings indoors and then transplant them to a garden when the time comes. Seeds can be started three to four weeks before they would be put outdoors. Many vegetables are planted outside in April or May, but definitely after frost conditions have waned. On To The Next Journey

I got in! Last week, as I was going through my e-mails, I was pleasantly surprised to see one addressed from Emory University. It told me to check the online portal to learn of my admission decision. Thankfully, when I checked the website, I was accepted. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the nation’s leading schools for Business and Journalism. Luckily, these are the two fields I have interest in pursuing. Emory University is the twentieth ranked college in the United States of America. Although not many

people from Long Island have heard of Emory, the opportunities that it will afford me are endless. As I was admitted into Oxford College, one of Emory’s freshman and sophomore institutions, I will be an upperclassman during my second year. This would allow me to take advantage of the leadership positions historically reserved for seniors. Involving myself in oncampus happenings will strengthen my application for graduate school and enrich my campus experience. Even though Emory is very far away, it has a perfect mix of urban

and rural influences. My parents are hesitant for me to enroll, as it is in a foreign area. It is hard to pass up such a prestigious education, so I have to visit to be sure it is the right place for me. As I write this article, I am sitting on a plane headed for Atlanta, row 35, seat C, contemplating my future. In a few hours, I will be on campus, where I hope to spend my next four years. Next week, I hope to tell you about my experience. I hope it is a positive one! With any luck, I will meet some very nice people and have a great time. Go Eagles!

Pet Supplies Plus and Natura, the makers of Evo, Innova, California Natural, Iams & Eukanuba pet foods have donated more than 80,000 pounds of dog food to help feed the hungry dogs of Long Island. All 10 Pet Supplies Plus locations on Long Island have participated in a “buy a pound/donate a pound” program to benefit pets in need. During the donation period of February 10th to March 9th, for every pound of Evo, Innova, Cal Natural,

Iams or Eukanuba dog food purchased at a Pet Supplies Plus store, Natura donated a pound to the local food bank. 80,000 pounds of dog food was sent in full trailer trucks on March 24th and March 26th to Long Island Cares, who graciously accepted the huge donation and made space in their warehouse. Pet Supplies Plus owner Stanley Lang says that, “Making sure that the animals of Long Island are properly fed and taken care of is near and dear to our hearts here at Pet Supplies Plus. We

wouldn’t want struggling families to have to drop off their pets at the local animal shelter because they could not feed them. We hope this donation helps hundreds if not thousands of families on Long Island.” Since 2010, Long Island Cares has distributed nearly 500,000 pounds of pet food and pet supplies through its network of 590 community-based member agencies that assist families in need to maintain their pets at home, as opposed to placing them in shelters. Renovation Flicks There are so many people who are anxious to get knee-deep in home improvement projects. Sparks’ novel turned into this unforgettable, romantic film is a love story at its core. However, the renovation of a Victorian home in the Carolinas is also central to the story and makes for amazing imagery. • Poltergeist: This movie showcases what can go wrong when a home takes on a life of its own as malevolent ghosts take over. • Under the Tuscan Sun: While renovating a home might be considered interesting, doing so in the remote beauty of the Italian countryside makes for

a much more visually appealing film. • House of Sand and Fog: A woman is evicted from her home after it is wrongly repossessed and auctioned. Together with a sheriff’s deputy the woman begins harassing the new owners of the home in an attempt to get back her residence. • Field of Dreams: Although it is not the house that is getting a makeover, but rather the fields behind this impressive farmhouse, viewers can be mesmerized by the magic that ensues afterward.

education classes, students put their athleticism to the test and jumped rope to raise money for the American Heart Association. To further celebrate the event, as part of a poster contest, groups of students

SHE TAUGHT WORKSHOP - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presented an official Town of Hempstead Citation to Kaley Young of Wantagh at her She Taught Worskshop, held at her studio in Wantagh. Kaley started this workshop in honor of her mom, Beth King Young, who passed away in 2012. Beth, who died in 2012, shared her love of dance and fitness with countless youngsters for more than 25 years. Beth was also a Freeport resident for more than 40 years and taught at Freeport Middle School, the East Meadow School District and ACDS, a school for children with special needs in Plainview.

Day of event registration will be held at Lido West Town Park, 200 Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The registration fee is $25 per person, with a student rate of $10. Active duty personnel and military veterans will be permitted to participate free of charge. A two-mile course will be set up along the beachfront at Lido West and participants may choose to run or walk the distance. Add Color To Kitchen Cabinets Many homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel. Though such a project can give a kitchen an entirely new look, that look does not come cheap. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “Cost vs. Value Report,” homeowners can expect to spend more than $53,000 on a major kitchen remodel and recoup just below 70 percent of that cost at resale. So while the idea of a full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, the cost of such an undertaking is beyond many homeowners’ budgets. But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new look and can do so for relatively little money. Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add

life to a kitchen, giving the room an entirely different feel without breaking the bank. The following are a few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets. Assess your existing cabinets. Some cabinet materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to

be one of trial and error. Plan for ornate cabinets to take a little longer. Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique and more detailed. If your cabinets are ornate, then factor this extra time into your schedule. Remove the doors and hardware. When painting cabinets, it’s best to essentially disassemble them, removing the doors, handles, knobs, latches, and any additional hardware. When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried. As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory.

This makes it easier to reassemble and ensures the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting. Don’t paint dirty surfaces. Cabinet surfaces have likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them ample time to dry. Sand the surfaces. Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them. Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere. Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old

paint is flaking off, this means the previous finish did not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface. In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spot-priming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with heavy staining. After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting. Apply primer-sealer. Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future. Paint the cabinets. After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets. Begin with the inside edges and openings of

the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes. When applying multiple coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats. Four hours between coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying the second and final coat of paint. Reassemble the cabinets. Once the final coat of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created.

At Wantagh Elementary School, first-grade students celebrated Dr. Seuss’s March 2nd birthday by reading his beloved stories and participating in a number of special and unusual educational activities. After reading Bartholomew And The Ooblek, Joanna Baker’s class first chose adjectives to describe the story and wrote the tale’s sequence of events on the Smart

Board. The favorite activity, however, was the making of ooblek, a nonnewtonian fluid made out of cornstarch, water and food coloring. When the students squeezed the ooblek, it resembled a solid. It then turned back to a liquid state when they let go of the substance. “The ooblek does not follow Newton’s rules of matter,” Ms. Baker explained. “This activity combines reading, observational writing and

science.” In Karen Lorentzen’s class, each student was instructed to read his or her favorite Dr. Seuss book. The students then wrote a description of their favorite character, explaining why the character was the most appealing. Each student presented his or her report to the class, which was accompanied by a creative, handmade puppet of the favorite character.

Kindergarten students at Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown School District celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 110th birthday with a breakfast celebration. The students filed into the decorated cafeteria wearing Dr. Seuss hats and met their “special person,”

with whom they read their favorite Dr. Seuss books. The teachers also took turns reading Green Eggs and Ham, after which parent volunteers served the delectable treat to each student. Prior to the culminating activity, the students reviewed Dr. Seuss’ works.

After reading his books, they were instructed to find word families and rhyming words. They also colored in Dr. Seuss characters, and these masterpieces decorated the walls of the cafeteria during the celebration.

Students wore planet nametags and held different size balls to illustrate the drastic differences in size among planets. related topics and developed creative and informative projects to share with their peers. For their projects, they included a purpose and a hypothesis, listed all materials used during their experiments, described their procedures and

results, and explained key details via charts and graphs. The annual science fair allows students to engage in new areas of interest and enhances critical thinking and research skills.

Women’s History Honoree Legislator Dave Denenberg was delighted to honor North Bellmore resident, mother and activist Jeanette Deutermann on March 24th at the Sixteenth Annual Trailblazers Awards Ceremony at the Chambers of the Nassau County Legislature. Ms. Deutermann is the mother of two children in the North Bellmore Public Schools and has been an educator herself as well as surrounded by educators her whole life; making it natural for her to develop today into a key educational advocate for our community and all children in New York’s public schools. As part of Women’s History Month, the County Legislators honor outstanding women in their legislative districts who have “blazed trails” through the wonderful work they do in their communities. Jeanette Deutermann is a perfect example of a ‘trailblazer’. While be an attentive mother, keeping her eye on her older sons school work load, Jeanette began noticing an alarming change in her sons regard for education over a matter of a couple years. It seemed the high-stakes testing and the test driven curriculum created for more anxiety than educational empowerment. After taking time to research what was happening in the local and state educational system she

found that parents were being left out of the conversation and it was the children and students that were getting the harmful effects of this test driven atmosphere. It was then Jeanette became involved in the ‘Opt Out movement’ and made it her mission to educate parents about what was happening within their children’s

New York State Allies for Public Education. Both of these organizations work to educate parents on the effects of high stakes testing, common core, data mining, and APPR. Jeanette has organized and spoken to parents at over 30 forums all across Long Island this year, and testified at both the Senate and Assembly hearings on education reform this past fall. She works with legislators, administrators, Board of Regents members, educators, parents, and community members, to effect positive comprehensive changes to the harmful education reforms in our NY public schools. Her goal is to stop highstakes testing tied to teacher evaluations, protect our children’s private records, and restore the love of learning for all of our public school children.
