n celebration of March as Music In Our Schools month, third-graders at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore performed a special concert for parents, peers and administrators on March 26th. Complete with drums, tambourines, recorders and other instruments, the talented musicians performed selections. To conclude the program, the chorus hosted a sing-along where they coached the audience from the stage. Pictured are some of the performers.

On Saturday, May 2nd, the Long Island Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Collaborative of the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, will hold the inaugural Long Island Screening Day for Perinatal M o o d and A n x i e t y Disorders Awareness event. Monologue Competition Levittown seniors Jack Sawula and Alex Philbin, seniors in Michael O’Shea’s Communication class at MacArthur High School, participated in the Nassau Community College Honors Program Monologue Competition.
Jack placed second in the competition, whose theme was “New Worlds.” During the contest, each student delivered a monologue, no longer than two minutes, on topics including living things, the planet or new worlds.

Stony Brook University is the first higher education institution committed to providing cancer researchers as mentors to high school students under a program run by “Stand Up To Cancer” (SU2C) and PBS LearningMedia. Called the EMPEROR Science Award Program, the education initiative encourages students from economically disadvantaged high schools to pursue careers in science, with a particular emphasis on cancer research through a year of mentorship with a scientist from a leading research institution or industry. Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, LAST HOPE ANIMAL RESCUE Buddy. expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest
prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

Chain Reaction Of Giving Levittown student Matthew Hartman, a second-grade student at Abbey Lane Elementary School, has been making the most of his birthday. At his parties, he asks friends to consider donating money to a charity of his choosing, instead of bringing him presents. Last year Matthew selected Sloan Kettering, and this year’s selection was the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation. The foundation raises money and awareness to find a cure for AIDS and to fund research to benefit those already living with HIV/AIDS. In addition, the foundation supports
those living with brain cancer, provides food, shelter and shoes for orphans in Kenya and raises awareness about the 11,400,000 orphans living in sub-Saharan Africa who need vaccinations, clean drinking water, education and clothing. Matthew learned about the foundation after his mother ran in the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation 5K Run and received additional information about the foundation from pediatrician Dr. Richard Sartori, who works with the foundation to provide medical care to Kenyans. Mr. Brodsky was touched by Matthew’s generosity and decided to donate toys
to a place of his choice. Matthew decided he wanted to help those who were less fortunate in his own school community. In March, Mr. Brodsky appeared at Abbey Lane with his car completely filled with toys. Boxes upon boxes of toys were unpacked and stored and will be distributed to make birthdays and holidays a little brighter for needy community children. “It is truly amazing to see how Matthew’s act of generosity and kindness started a chain reaction that helps so many people, both locally and around the world,” Principal Dr. George Maurer said. “We are very proud of Matthew.”

Under the direction of Dr. David Friedman and Matthew Zausin, MacArthur High School students took part in the first of three days of the Charles Duggan Long Island Science and Engineering Fair at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Seniors Matthew Brulhardt and Sabrina Chasen advanced to the top 20% of projects on Long Island to present at Day Two of the fair held on March 13. Matthew’s project investigated the impacts of changing plate
coating spraying of bipolar plates in order to decrease wrinkling, thereby reducing fuel cell size. Sabrina’s research tried to determine the causes of the formation of insolubles in woody bio-oil. The goal of the Charles Duggan LISEF is to identify and recognize students with the potential to become outstanding natural, physical and behavioral scientists, engineers or mathematicians. Other student projects included sophomores Jake Iannacone and Andy
Lee’s project analyzing computer programs and determining why humans have a difficult time understanding computer code. Junior Laura Tarone presented research on the patron demographics and rationale of patronage of Long Island Farmers Markets. In addition, senior Jennifer Cooper explored the socioeconomic differences of Whole Foods and Waldbaums shoppers through the novel use of vehicle value.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, Councilman Gary Hudes and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad are inviting local residents to enter the town’s annual “planet-friendly” bike locker lottery. The town is currently collecting entry forms, which will be used to select eight lucky winners who will each have a one-year use of a bike locker at the Bellmore train station. The town will hold a lottery drawing on Earth Day (April 22nd, 2015) at the Bellmore train station to randomly select the eight winners. Residents interested in the bike lockers should call the Office of the Town Clerk at 516.812.3024 to obtain an entry form (only one lottery ticket per household will be accepted). Residents must return the completed forms by Friday, April 17th to the Office of the Town Clerk, located on the first floor of Hempstead Town Hall (1 Washington Street, Hempstead) OR mail them

Ahmad, Town Clerk, ATTN: Bike Lockers, 1 Washington Street, Hempstead, NY 11550. “When it comes to environmentally friendly means of transportation, two wheels are certainly better than four,” stated Murray. “We encourage residents to enter the town lottery and try their hand at winning use of a bike locker for a whole year!” The town is also looking forward to the installation of five bike lockers each in transit-oriented areas in Baldwin and Woodmere. “Riding a bike is good for a person’s health and for the environment in which they live,” said Councilwoman King Sweeney. Added Councilman Hudes, “These bike lockers are a great place for residents to protect their bicycles during the work day.” “I am proud to work with Supervisor Murray, Councilwoman King Sweeney and Councilman Hudes to continue the town’s successful bike locker program” said Ahmad.
Each of the bike lockers is 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 3 ¼ feet wide, all conveniently located on the north side of the tracks at the Bellmore train station. Each locker easily fits a standard bicycle, protecting it from damage, theft and bad weather. The town requires a $40 key deposit, which is refunded at the end of the one-year lease. Roemer was introduced by Samantha Bunster, Suzanne Alahverdian, and Mirianthi Pericli, who explained they nominated her because of her dedication to the district and its students while moving from English teacher to department chair to her current role as Administrator for Educational Programs, Literacy and Staff Development. “She has become the voice defending the soft skills that the FACS department provides students,” they said. LIFACS is a subchapter of the New York State association. It supports teachers in the classroom
and helps to keep the content area alive. Workshops and conferences are provided to support teachers with new ways to enhance and enrich real-life experiences for students, while teaching them how to reason, think critically and creatively, and act responsibly toward others. Teachers use the STEM curriculum of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is the only professional association dedicated to teaching family and consumer science to students from multiple practice settings and content areas.

Student-Musician Honored Alan Javan Culbreath, a senior at the Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School, was honored by more than 400 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters this month. Mr. Culbreath is one of 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Donated blood is perishable and must be constantly replenished to keep up with the demand. Red blood cells, with a shelf life of only 42 days, are the most frequently transfused blood component, and are always needed by hospitals. Eligible donors can give red cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. Double red cell donations yield twice the usual amount of red cells
in a single appointment and are accepted at select donation locations. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year. Feel The Beat In celebration of March as Music In Our Schools month, third-graders at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore performed a special concert for parents, peers and administrators on March 26th. Complete with drums,

Native Lesson Fourth-grade students at Parkway Elementary School engaged in educational workshops hosted by Journeys into American Indian Territory, a cultural arts group which offers educational programs on Native American culture to
schools in the New York tri-state area. A number of workshops were held over the course of the program, with classes focused on Native American art, culture and storytelling. Students were also offered the opportunity to visit an in-school Native
American “museum,” where they were able to handle authentic artifacts and learn of their historical importance. The fourth-graders found the workshops to be enjoyable and educational.
Evening Of Music In front of an adoring crowd of friends, family, faculty and administrators, hundreds of studentmusicians in the district gave mesmerizing performances during the district’s annual music festival at LIU Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The program began with an All-District Elementary Band performance, which included students from
Barnum Woods and McVey elementary schools, and then followed with another All-District Elementary Band performance, which included students from Bowling Green, Meadowbrook and Parkway elementary schools. Both performances were directed by guest conductor Peggy Rakas. The East Meadow High School Chamber Orchestra, directed
by conductor Michael Cascardi, and the AllDistrict Middle School Band and All-District High School Band, both directed by guest conductor Vincent Oppido, also delighted the audience with spectacular performances. The district commends the student-musicians for a riveting evening of music, which was made possible in part by the Tilles Center Arts In Education program.

Michael LiCalzi, who lost his life commanding a tank unit in the Iraqi desert nine years ago, was a hometown boy from Garden City who enjoyed many a youthful moment surfing the waves at Lido West Beach Park. The Town of Hempstead and the Ace in the Hole Foundation, created in Michael’s memory, will honor the fallen hero during the 6th Annual Beach Run & Walk Fundraiser at Lido West at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9th. “The Town of Hempstead proudly welcomes the LiCalzi family, along with Michael’s friends, admirers and fellow Marines, to Lido West to honor his memory and support his foundation,” commented Supervisor Kate Murray. “Since its creation in 2008, the Ace in the Hole Foundation has raised
over $430,000 for donation to various military and charitable concerns.” The 2015 Beach Run & Walk will salute the family of CPL Steve Vahaviolos, USMC, a member of 1st Lt. Michael LiCalzi’s tank crew who died beside his comrade during a patrol in the Iraqi desert on May 11th, 2006. The Ace in the Hole Foundation has designated the USMC 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division; United States Marine Corps Tankers Association; the Wounded Warrior Project; the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) and the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types (FIRST) as recipients of this year’s fund-raising efforts. Scoring In Top Ten The Division Avenue High School DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) Chapter, advised by Frances Crusco, competed at the State Conference in Rochester on March 4th-6th. DECA is an extracurricular activity that helps to prepare future leaders and entrepreneurs through role-play competitions in business themed areas. At the conference, attended by all New York State high school chapters, nearly 2000 students competed
in over 40 categories. The following students placed in the top ten for their event: • Bobby Evans - Personal Financial Literacy • Srikar Indrakanti Principle of Business Management and Administration, overall event performance, test score and his role play • David Lavigne Decision Making Marketing • James Lunetta Human Resources Management exam,
role play I and II, and for overall performance • Sara Pedroza – thirdplace in Job Interview • Jessica Vasseghi Role play in Decision Making Marketing • Anna Yoo - Retail Merchandising Team members Matt Evans Amanda Jakubiak, Andrea Garthwaite, Navreen Ghotra and Alex Montoya rounded also showed strong performances in the competition.
