Lucky Charms Math Second-graders at Lee Road School in Levittown practiced their mathematics skills with Lucky Charms cereal in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Teacher Julie Casey explained that the activity reinforced their sorting, comparing and graphing skills as they worked with the marshmallow treats in

the cereal. After their math activities were completed, the students each received a cup full of this delicious cereal for a holiday snack. 555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. And counting. Stay tuned for that book. And Buddy’s, of course.

David and Lisa During two performances on March 11th and 12th, MacArthur High School thespians performed “David and Lisa,” a dramatic production in two acts based on the movie released in 1962 and remake in 1968. Director Lisa Levenberg admits that the play is a bit of an odd choice for the high school stage, but brings with it a challenging character analysis and memorable characters. “I saw the play in high

school, and remembered it,” Ms. Levenberg explained. “The students were intrigued, so I modernized the script.” “David and Lisa” is the heartbreaking look of life through the eyes of two mentally ill teenagers who develop a friendship and their relationships with fellow students while under their doctor’s care. Kevin Wallace plays the role of David Clemens, while Jenna Stillman brings the character

of Lisa alive. There are no colorful props, only lighting and a minimally decorated stage for the 22-member cast to develop memorable scenes and characterization throughout the production. MacArthur High School would like to thank producer Carisa Wellenreuther, and John Mazzarella, who constructed and designed the set, as well as G. Scott Designs and Chris Brown who handled sound and lighting.

First-graders at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore not only dressed in green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, they utilized their newly acquired knowledge about Ireland and the folklore behind the leprechaun to strengthen their English language arts skills. David Reilly’s first-grade

class read a Scholastic News article about Ireland’s countryside, castles, cliffs and cities, as well as Ivan Robertson’s “Jack and the Leprechaun” and Marcia Thornton Jones’ “Leprechauns on the Loose.” After learning that these mischievous creatures have a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, the students were instructed

to write about what they would like to find at the end of their personal rainbow. Jennifer Magliano’s kindergarten class also read a variety of literature about leprechauns and St. Patrick’s Day and discussed words that have a “green” connotation. In addition, they celebrated the holiday with healthy green snacks.

Language Week To celebrate Foreign Language Week, the Merrick Avenue Middle School World Languages Department sponsored several activities to enrich the curriculum, increase cultural awareness and nurture a love of learning language in our students. A poster contest, themed “Multilingualism

“This high test anxiety … inevitably lowers test scores, allowing for an inaccurate representation of a student’s academic ability. We should all just try our best, as the test results do not define who you are.” The idea was born out of a Student Council meeting about ways to honor the late history teacher, Doug Smestad. Liriano then tied this into her Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the highest honor earned for a Girl Scout. A longtime Girl Scout, Liriano is even featured on the cover of the Tagalongs cookie box.

While Liriano said it required quite an effort on her part, the process was completed fairly quickly. “You have to write the book, then have people help you edit it, draw things for you, get information from a publishing website and then there was getting it on Amazon,” she explained. A planned communications major, Liriano advised fellow students to “write about something you’re passionate about.” The book is available via Amazon.com for $6.

Getting Fit Students at Sanford H. Calhoun High School learned about healthy living at the annual health fair, which featured volunteer efforts and showcased local vendors. From relaxation scents and oils to anti-gravity yoga and video game dance offs, the event highlighted

various ways for students to maintain a health conscious state of being. “It centers around promoting healthy choices for our students to take with them for the rest of their lives,” said Keri Cinelli, health teacher and fair organizer. Massage tables were set

up by local chiropractors, cosmetology students offered beauty tips and athletes were offered performance reviews and much more as students swarmed the gymnasium. Students and S.A.D.D. Club members also prepped and served nutritious snacks and foods.

Sky Exploration Wantagh Elementary School third-graders explored the wonders of the night sky’s constellations during a presentation by Starlab Planetarium, an inflated igloo that reveals the solar system’s planets, stars and galaxies. Instructor Kim Kunze explained how the sky

changes seasonally as the earth rotates and pointed out the stars and planets seen by the naked eye during winter. The lesson included stories behind the constellations like Orion and the Big Dipper and information about red and blue stars in addition to yellow stars.

The goal of the program was not only to reinforce the information learned about the solar system, but to assist students in being able to identify constellations and stars in the night sky, Ms. Kunz said.

Native Territory Bellmore students at Shore Road School attended an in-house field trip called Journeys Into American Indian Territory to learn more about the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. During the curriculum-based event, presenters Bob Vetter and Maddie Cheers shared

artifacts from their portable museum, told a Kiowa story called “How the Big Dipper Got Into the Sky” and taught a popular “hand game.” The students learned how the Cheyenne people used the entire buffalo for clothes, food and shelter. A few children also modeled

typical clothing worn by Native Americans and learned how they tanned clothing out of hides. The most popular part of the program, however, was the installation of a traditional and authentic tepee in the gymnasium for the students to explore.

More than 85 participants in this year’s St. Baldrick’s event hosted at Sanford H. Calhoun High School collectively raised more than $35,000. In an effort to show solidarity to children battling cancer, participants raised money individually or as part of a team and then on the night

of the event – shaved their heads. The top team, Calhoun Football, raised $5,776 and the top individual, Calhoun student Matthew Chicco, raised $6,283. “In our 10th year here at Calhoun we have raised over $500,000 total,” said Peter Magnuson, English teacher, coach and St.

Baldrick’s coordinator. Students, staff, administrators and community members came out to support the event. Proceeds from these events, hosted all over the world, benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds childhood cancer research.

Visit from Vets In accordance with their curriculum, W. T. Clarke Middle School eighthgraders received a special visit from members of the Vietnam War Veterans Association. Coinciding with their social studies and English Language Arts classes, eighth-graders are learning the history of the

Vietnam War while reading an examination of life in Southeast Asian country through the novel “Inside Out and Back Again,” by Thanhha Lai. During the visit, the veterans participated in small group discussions with Charlie Polley’s class emphasizing the hardship of the war. In addition,

Music in Our Schools In celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, Winthrop Avenue School students in Bellmore performed for parents, staff and peers during a lively concert in the school auditorium on March 17th. Under the direction of teacher Erica Davis, the third- and fourthgrade choral students and

recorder players performed traditional tunes, blending the music with a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Included was a performance of “Michael Finnegan,” followed by “A Musical Recipe,” “Frog Went A-Courtin,” “Gavotte” and “Angelina.” There was a sing-along to the words of “Do-Re-Me,”

featuring the recorder players, and the concert concluded with “I Love Music.” Principal Sally Curto congratulated the students on their stellar performance. “Music is alive and well at Winthrop Avenue School,” she said.

Story from the Heart At East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown, students collaboratively wrote letters from the perspective of children living in the 1800’s during the country’s westward expansion as part of an English language arts workshop called Stories from the Heart to the Heart. Nationally acclaimed storyteller

Robin Bady, winner of the 2013 National Storytelling Network’s J.J. Reneaux Emerging Artists Grant, hosted the workshop. The students have studied the country’s westward expansion as part of their social studies curriculum, and Ms. Bady’s project encouraged them to place themselves in this historical period. Each

class crafted a letter from the perspective of children writing home to friends and family in Seaford after leaving for the West. The collection of stories will be placed in a bound book for each student to take home, and there will be a public reading of the stories this spring.

Year of the Monkey

The smell of Chinese food wafted through the Abbey Lane Elementary School cafeteria as thirdgrade students gathered for a meal to celebrate the Year of the Monkey. The meal was the culminating activity of a monthlong study of China

in which they learned about the country’s history, geography and animals. The social studies unit also emphasized mapping skills during the students’ identification of landmarks and rivers. In addition to making Chinese lanterns, they read fiction and

nonfiction stories and articles about China, and studied their personal characteristics based on zodiac signs. Each student was also required to submit a research project on a poster board.

Jazz Ensemble Celebrates In celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, the MacArthur High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Joseph Romano, performed in the seventh annual Herricks High School Jazz Festival in New Hyde Park. The event featured several of the finest middle school and high school jazz ensembles on Long Island and included MacArthur’s

Robert Bottone (timbales), Theodore Fiber (electric guitar), Alexander Hertler (drum set), Jake Kaufman (congas), Max Richman (trumpet), Jason Russo (alto saxophone) and Jared Schwartz (electric bass). The guest adjudicator for the festival was renowned jazz pianist and composer, Helen Sung, who presented a rhythm section workshop. She

performed selections with her jazz trio and answered students’ questions. Levittown Curriculum Associate for Music Vincent D’Ulisse said, “Without question, the festival was a valuable learning experience for students in the jazz ensemble and will help them improve in future performances.”

The Levittown School District has appointed Todd H. Winch as assistant superintendent for instruction for the 2016-2017 school year. Mr. Winch will replace Debbie Rifkin, who will be taking over the position of assistant superintendent for administration and personnel, upon the

upcoming retirement of Darlene Rhatigan. Mr. Winch, a Huntington Station resident, joins Levittown from the Plainedge School District, where he currently serves as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. This appointment serves as Mr. Winch’s return to Levittown, having previously held many administrative positions in the district, including director of pupil services (2009-2011), assistant director of pupil services (2006-2009) and social studies chairperson at Wisdom Lane Middle School (2004-2006). He began his educational career at Levittown’s

The John F. Kennedy High School Drama Club presented a colorful rendition of “Shrek the Musical,” complete with a live orchestra in midMarch. Set against dramatic,

custom-built scenery, led by students Drew McLaughlin and Ruth Bergman, the movie came to life on Kennedy’s stage. Prior to the Saturday matinee performance, cast members held a

Amidst the many smiling parents equipped with smartphones, cameras and camcorders at the ready, kindergartners at Bowling Green Elementary School celebrated the start of the spring season in style with a traditional egg hunt on the school lawn. Sponsored by the

Bowling Green PTA, the hunt gave children the opportunity to seek out colored plastic eggs filled with small prizes for a few minutes prior to the instructional day. According to egg hunt chair Tricia Barsuakas, 10 of the eggs were filled with a single penny that would

later be exchanged for a very special gift: a bubble wand! All five of the school’s kindergarten classes participated, encompassing approximately 100 students. Following the hunt, a special party was held in the school cafeteria, also sponsored by the PTA.

Biography Project First and fifth-grade students at Abbey Lane Elementary School in Levittown collaboratively researched famous individuals during the school’s first Biography Project. During the monthlong activity, groups of one fifth-grader and two first-graders researched their subject’s early life, contributions to society, fun facts, life work and later work, which was displayed on a decorative poster

board and later revealed to parents and staff. First-grade teacher Jess Kaufman explained that the Biography Project introduced research and collaboration skills by partnering with a fifthgrade student. Parents were also treated to a video, highlighting each of the students’ projects. Principal Dr. George Maurer said the video was produced in front of a green screen, giving

students the ability to work on their communication and public speaking skills. In addition to the poster board, fifth-graders created a pizza box display of facts on the same individual researched with the younger students and created a social media (Facebook or Instagram) page, outlining the subjects’ life accomplishments.

During its board of education March 22nd meeting, the Bellmore School District trustees and administrators recognized longtime Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center substitute teacher Frances Zwerling as a Star Polisher Leader. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph F. Famularo explained that Ms. Zwerling, who has taught for the past 50 years, is deserving of the district’s highest award for having instilled warmth and creativity in the classroom environment and having displayed exemplary core values. “Fran Zwerling remains an inspiration to us all,” Dr. Famularo said. “She has exemplified our core

values since her very first day in Bellmore Schools.” Ms. Zwerling began teaching in the Bellmore School District in 1973 and has been employed as a substitute teacher since her retirement in 1995. She began her career as a kindergarten teacher at P.S. 190 in Brooklyn in 1952. She has also held positions as a pre-school teacher, library story hour teacher, Girl Scout troop chairman, assistant leader of a Camp Fire group and a substitute teacher in the North Bellmore School District. “The greatest gift you have given the students is that they have learned from the beginning that the Bellmore School District is a fun place to

learn,” Board President Jay L.T. Breakstone said. During the meeting, Ms. Zwerling was also recognized by the district’s unions and local government representatives and received an award in the shape of a star that features the thumbprints of district students. Ms. Zwerling said receiving the award is overwhelming and that teaching in the district has been an honor and privilege. “I have seen many changes, but a change I have never seen is the superintendent’s and board of education’s dedication to educational excellence and their ability to bring out the best in children,” she said.

Trailblazer Award

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald received a 2016 Nassau County Legislature Trailblazer Award at the 18th annual Women Trailblazers Award Ceremony and Celebration, held in the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola on March 21st. The award recognizes women residing in Nassau County who serve

as role models in their communities and through their contributions to the betterment of fellow residents. Each year, recipients of the Trailblazer Award are honored in celebration of national Women’s History Month. “I was very humbled to be recognized by such accomplished women from around Nassau County,” Dr. McDonald said. A lifelong Levittown resident, Dr. McDonald began her educational career as a teacher in the Levittown School District. Currently serving as the district’s superintendent of schools, she has held numerous positions within the district, including director of pupil personnel services and assistant superintendent for business and finance. During her tenure in Levittown, Dr. McDonald

has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Hofstra George M. Estabrook Alumni Association, received the New York State Liberty Award, and while working at Division Avenue High School, was named Teacher of the Year by the National Honor Society and was the recipient of the PTSA’s Honorary Life Award. The Levittown Ice Falcons took third place in the New York State High School Hockey Championship tournament in Jamestown from March 4th-7th. Represented by Division Avenue High School

Jump, Shoot & Save Wantagh Middle School students participated in the school’s annual Hoops for Heart event to raise money for the American Heart Association through participation in physical education classes’ shooting contests. The students raised more than $7, 500 this year, ranking them among the top fundraising schools on Long Island. During the last 18 years, Wantagh Middle School has raised a total of $150,000 for the American Heart Association for medical research and educational programs to fight heart disease and stroke. Eighth grader Julia Wilkinson was the top

fundraiser having collected $720. Class winners from grades 6-8 included Amanda Amato, Andrew Amato, Bobby Ambrosino, Cole Belling, Riley Brady, Ava Cammarata, Amanda Ciaramella, Thomas Cupelli, Allison Davis, Matt Delaney, Kyle Dowden, Kristina Fuchs, Lauren Goldberg, Shaun Joyce, Grace Massari, Steven Mendolia, Timothy Migliaro, Lara Palazzolo, Jake Pettas, Louis Pizzileo, Michael Rathgaber, Sarah Rende, Michael Rodin, Julianna Rose, Shannon Sullivan, Jack Tartaglione, Madison Taylor, Nick Teresky, Hannah Watson, Ryan Whitaker, and Julia

Wilkinson. All of the class winners then competed to become school champions, with Lauren Goldberg and Nick Teresky named female and male winners. During the campaign, students learned about the lifelong health benefits of physical activity, importance of heart health and real-life lessons about volunteering, helping others, leadership and how their actions can help save lives. “Hoops for Heart is a great way to bring students together for a great cause, physical activity and community service,” physical education teacher Eileen Keener said.

Night of Honor During a traditional candle lighting ceremony at Levittown’s Wisdom Lane Middle School, 71 students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society for having demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service.
