A surging battle uphill; attainment; engulfment; then a period of peace begins. The energy of the high water flow can bring nutriments, or bring destruction, but it always brings change. On the ebb tide, assessments can be made, as old ground is revealed again to the light.

Springtime Sniffles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Bitten by the Art Bug

As part of the North Bellmore School District’s art enrichment program, second-graders at Saw Mill Road Elementary School completed Bugs in a Jar drawings. Under the direction of art teacher Amy Lopez,

the students learned about many different insects such as butterflies, bees and spiders. On large pieces of paper, they drew jars and then pictures of bugs inside, with pictures on the SmartBoard serving as inspiration. The children

were allowed to be creative and come up with their own bugs by combining the parts of two or more insects. Ms. Lopez said that the activity taught students about 3-D drawing.

Levittown students Ben Brisette (third grade), Meghan Lazzarini (fourth grade) and Isabelle Duffy (fifth grade) were grade winners in the annual Lee Road School Math Fact Competition. Held on March 24th, classroom winners

competed against their peers, according to grade, much like a spelling bee. Teacher Jessica Feit flashed math equations on a white board screen as students demonstrated their skills in addition and division. The first student to answer the equation was the

winner and the process of elimination ensued. Levittown Director of Mathematics Dr. Ellen Stegman explained that the schoolwide competition was not only demonstrated that math is fun but assisted in reinforcing the students’ fluency.

Once Upon a Time Dressed as fairy princesses, kings and queens, farmers and more, Bellmore secondgraders at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center performed short plays based on the fairytales “The 12 Dancing Princesses, “Many Moons” and “One Gift Deserves Another” (“The Turnip”) for delighted parents and peers. The plays were a culmination of workshops held by artist-in-residence

Lorraine Zeller-Agostino, who taught the students nonverbal improvisational acting techniques through the study of fairytales. “We are bringing these stories to life and have learned that there are many versions to a story by the way we transport ourselves into the characters,” Ms. Zeller-Agostino said. In addition to reading and studying fairytales, the students learned to depict expression, emotion

and choral techniques on stage. They were casted and then practiced their parts in the classroom and on stage for several weeks. In addition to learning acting techniques, the goals of the program were to provide students with the opportunity to explore their creativity, learn cooperation skills, feel successful and explore the art of drama.

Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District hosted its seventh Chop Your Lock’s for Charity event to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation on March 22nd, raising $42,000. “I am so proud of our Participation in Government and Leadership students for their spirit, enthusiasm and hard work in creating

an event that not only raised money for such an important cause, but showcased why Mepham is such a special place,” said Kerry Dennis, social studies teacher, kickline coach and St. Baldrick’s co-coordinator. Irish step dancers from the Schade Academy of Irish Dancing kicked off the evening’s festivities. Community members were treated to face painting, games, music, raffle and

more. Team Guiliana G., created for social studies teacher Jacqueline Geller’s cancer surviving 4-yearold daughter, were top fundraisers, earning nearly $6,500 for the cause. Since 2008, Mepham High School has raised over $250,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds research for childhood cancers.

DECA Heads to State The Division Avenue High School DECA club (Distributive Education Clubs of America), under the direction of Mark Engels, competed at the New York State Conference held in Rochester, New York on March 8th-10th. The team was among 2,500 business education students who competed in various business events and were graded on either a prepared presentation or a role-play scenario. Bhargava Arunachala won two medals in the Food Marketing series event, and Amanda Jakubiak won a medal for finishing in the

top 10 on an exam in the Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan event. Second-graders at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District learned about the importance of being active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle when PlayFit Education founder Dr. Curt Hinson - aka “Dr. Recess” - led an interactive assembly at the school on March 23rd. According to its website, PlayFit Education specializes in fitness,

health, physical education and playground programs that focus on play, fitness and social-emotional health. The company’s Dr. Recess Assembly and Playground Games Program was created to serve elementary schools throughout the nation. Dr. Hinson educated the young students about new and exciting ways to learn, grow and develop healthy lifestyles through play. This play includes grade

level-appropriate games that enhance students’ social-emotional, critical thinking and motor skills. Following the indoor assembly, the students met Dr. Hinson outside during their recess time to participate in the activities he had taught them. Using dodge balls, hula hoops and cones, they engaged in games such as “Keep Away” and “One Bounce” with their classmates.

an author study on Dr. Seuss, which included the reading of many of his books, completing rhyming activities and learning site words from the literature. In art classes, the students created truffula trees, trees described in Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” which also transitioned the students

to a unit on ecology. At the breakfast, the kindergarten teachers took turns reading the book to participants with assistance from a white board. Each student also read his or her favorite Dr. Suess book with a parent or grandparent.

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that Jonas E. Salk Middle School Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan received the national Teacher Leadership Award from the Academy for Character Education at The Sage Colleges. This award recognizes Mulligan for his leadership, service and excellent performance, as well as the distinction he holds with peers in accordance with the highest standards of good character.

A Babylon resident, Mulligan chairs the school’s in-house character education program called R.I.S.E., which stands for respect, integrity, safety/staying healthy and empathy. In October, the middle school received the National School of Character Award and Best Practice Award during the National Forum on Character Education held in Washington, D.C. Mr. Mulligan explained that while he received the award, he could not have

effectively implemented the character education program without the assistance of the R.I.S.E. committee, faculty, and staff. “The R.I.S.E. program has turned Salk into a very special place, so much so that we often use the term ‘the Salk family.’ That’s how it feels to come to the school each day,” Mulligan said. In addition to his tenure as middle school assistant principal, Mulligan has worked 30 years for the Levittown School District as an assistant principal and earth science/biology teacher at MacArthur High School and as the science chair at Jonas E. Salk Middle School. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SUNY Geneseo, a master’s degree in biology education at Stony Brook University and certification in school administration at The College of Saint Rose. Trimming for Charity Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District hosted its annual Chop Your Lock’s for Charity event to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation on March 21st, raising $32,000. “This was a great team building event along with

building character in our future generation,” said Joseph Bianca, special education teacher and St. Baldrick’s coordinator. Calhoun football once again was the top fundraising team, garnering more than $6,000 for the cause, led by social studies teacher

and coach Brian Moeller. Merrick’s Smith Street Deli donated a whopping $5,000 to the school’s fundraiser as well. “This is our 11-straight year and we are closing in on the $600,000 mark overall,” Bianca added.

On March 24th, students from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District participated in the American Association of Teachers of Italian’s annual poetry recitation contest at SUNY Old Westbury. These select BellmoreMerrick students competed against more than 225 students from all over Long Island as they recited classic Italian poems in front of peers, teachers and professors. Each student not only memorized up to 30 lines of a classic Italian poem, but also effectively introduced and interpreted it. “The students who

demonstrated their mastery of pronunciation, intonation, interpretation, poise and memorization were awarded for their accomplished performances,” said World Languages Chairperson Enrique Montes. “All competitors were commended for their efforts and determination as they spent a day immersed in Italian.” Senior Rebecca Unz of Sanford H. Calhoun High School received the top prize in her category for her poignant rendition of an excerpt from Dante Alighieri’s “The Divine Comedy.” Melissa Mjeshtri of John F. Kennedy High School was also awarded

In observance of New York Agricultural Literacy Week, held March 20th24th, second-graders at Parkway and Meadowbrook elementary schools in the East Meadow School District received a visit from Laurie Murdoch, a volunteer with Cornell Cooperative Extension, for a lesson on agriculture.

Murdoch read “The Grapes Grow Sweet” by Lynne Tuft, a story about a young boy named Julian who is old enough to take part in the grape harvest on his family’s farm. The story provides a glimpse of what it’s like to grow up in a vineyard and explains the process of growing grapes. Following, students

asked questions about harvesting grapes, working in a vineyard and how they can grow fruits and vegetables in their own backyards. In addition, Cornell Cooperative Extension donated a copy of the book to each school’s library for student use.

One Voice, One Message In an effort to once again unite the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and continue its mission of philanthropy and community activism, the “One Voice, One Message” committee held its 5K Superhero Run on March 25th. Hundreds of participants descended on the starting point at Grand Avenue Middle School, enjoying breakfast donated from local businesses, getting faces painted with superhero designs and interacting with various school and community members. Elected officials Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads, Assemblyman Dave McDonough and State Sen.

John E. Brooks were all on hand to lend their support to the cause. “The one fantastic thing about the One Voice, One Message program is the recognition that we all have a responsibility to something greater than ourselves,” Rhoads said when he addressed the crowd. The race was organized by Dr. Joseph Netto, school psychologist at Meadowbrook Alternative Program, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mara Bollettieri and District Social Studies Chairperson Robyn Einbinder. “We continue our mission to fight hunger,” said Einbinder. “We began earlier this year by opening

the districts Community Cupboard (a food pantry) and then dedicated this year’s Day of Service to providing food and hygiene items to those in need.” The more than $10,000 raised will benefit Rise Against Hunger, which is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable populations. Overall winners were Wellington C. Mepham High School students James Moehringer for the men with a race time of 17:24.45 and Carissa Kahn for the women with a race time of 19:43.44.

ACCESS Workshop Members of the community joined East Meadow School District staff and administrators at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on March 21st for the final ACCESS workshop held this year. Project ACCESS (A Community Committed to Educating Students for Success) is a subcommittee of the district’s PTA Curriculum Council that sponsors educational workshops for parents throughout the school year. The most recent workshop, titled “Never Alone,” examined

the effects of addiction and the treatment and self-help programs available within the community. Sponsored by the East Meadow PTA Council in conjunction with the East Meadow Kiwanis, attendees experienced an evening of knowledge, empowerment and hope as guest speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous shared their testimonies about addiction and how it affected their relationships and lives.
